Nadal attacks drug-testing rules

[ برای مشاهده لینک ، لطفا با نام کاربری خود وارد شوید یا ثبت نام کنید ]

World number one Rafael Nadal says new drug-testing procedures in tennis make players "feel like a criminal".
Players are required to report their whereabouts for at least one hour a day, seven days a week, to their national anti-doping organisation.
Testers arrive unannounced and should a player fail to meet with them on three separate occasions over an 18-month period, a suspension could follow.
"It's not fair to have persecution like that," said the six-time major winner.
"They make you feel like a criminal. Not even my mother knows where I am every day.
"I am the first one who wants fair competition, completely clean competition for everybody.

"But it is very difficult to know where you want to be tomorrow, especially in a sport like tennis.
"We want to be an Olympic sport, but we don't want to pay a price like this for being an Olympic sport."
Last week, British number one Andy Murray called the World Anti-Doping Agency's (Wada) so-called "whereabouts" procedures, introduced this year, "draconian".
And the Professional Players Federation (PPF), an umbrella group of professional player associations in the UK, said Wada's out-of-competition testing was becoming a "fiasco", a claim Wada strongly rejected.
Wada director general David Howman told BBC Sport: "Some will say 'that's a bit tough'. But then you are back to that basic question - do you want cheats or not?"
On the opening day of this week's ABN Amro World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam, Nadal and Murray, along with at least four other players, underwent drug tests. For Murray it was his third in just over two weeks.
Although the system has been in place for several years, the most recent guidelines have proved controversial for the greater demands they make on those being tested.
As well as specifying that athletes must be available for seven rather than five days a week, according to Wada's 2009 code, the times of day between which they can specify their location have also been restricted.
UK Sport, however, has given its backing to the new measures.
"While I do have some sympathy for the fairly small number of athletes who are required to meet these requirements, I would think that it's a small price to pay for clean athletes to help us drive cheats out of sport," said director of Drug-Free Sport Andy Parkinson.
However, 65 Belgian sportsmen and women have launched a legal challenge claiming that the intrusive nature of the Wada code breaks European Union privacy laws.

A cheating wife who paid £800 to hire a hitman to murder her husband was yesterday spared jail and .put on a life skills course instead
Mother-of-two Zekiye Osmankan, arranged to have her husband, Cinsan, killed after a complaining about him during a chance meeting with a friend at her children's primary school
But after handing over the cash, the 33-year-old had second thoughts – and then confessed all when she was tricked out of her money

Yesterday, Osmankan was spared jail by Judge Jeremy Roberts QC, who handed her a suspended ten-month sentence and told her to attend a 20-hour 'skills for life' course
He said it was an 'exceptional case', adding: 'You and your husband both now recognise that your marriage is at an end and you will go your separate ways and the situation where you committed your offence will not be repeated.'
Osmankan, from Tottenham, north London, and her Turkish-Cypriot husband married in 1994 and had two children aged six and 12.
But the marriage was an unhappy one and she began an affair in 2008.
Events took a sinister turn when she told her friend, Stacey Jane Ali, that she was being abused.
Ali suggested that for £800 her boyfriend, William Holden could arrange to have her husband shot.
Osmankan withdrew the cash from his account and handed it over at the school gates last August, the Old Bailey was told.
However, a day after she had arranged the hit, Osmankan realised she had made a 'terrible mistake and done something stupid' and phoned to call it off – only to be told there would be a £50 cancellation fee.
She then confessed to her 39-year-old husband she was having an affair, had planned to have him killed and asked if she could borrow the money to cancel the contract on his head.
Osmankan then called police and handed herself in, spending 18 weeks on remand in prison. She admitted soliciting to murder.
Passing sentence, the judge said he had taken into account the fact that Osmankan had been abused, was suffering from depression at the time, confessed within 24 hours and showed remorse.
He added that Ali and Holden were probably con artists who were only interested in cheating her out of her £800. They were originally charged with conspiracy to murder but the case was dropped

Aptera 2e

I'm accelerating and cornering — hard — on three wheels, little wisps of tire smoke curling out of the slender front wheel pants as steering is cranked in and "throttle" applied. And no, I'm not in an early Volkswagen GTI that hikes up its inside rear tire. Rather, I've been given a drive in the Aptera 2e, a soon-to-be-produced electric vehicle whose shape is slipperier than a Teflon-coated salmon on glare ice, and whose composite construction offers both light weight and impressive structural integrity. Better yet, the 2e is scheduled to begin rolling off the Vista, California, assembly line this October for an as-yet-to-be-determined price between $25,000 and $40,000. Charge it overnight from your 110-volt home outlet, and it's claimed to have a range of 100 miles...in the carpool lane, if you wish.

Pie in the sky? Nope. The business model looks sound; nearly 4000 deposits have been placed (Robin Williams among the clientele), enthusiastic investors are locked in, and co-founders Steve Fambro and Chris Anthony have assembled a team that balances Detroit low-volume niche-production experience with California "anything is possible" attitude. Chief engineer Tom Reichenbach was formerly vehicle engineering manager for both Ford GT and Shelby GT500 programs; and CEO Paul Wilbur has a storied history at Ford, Chrysler ([ برای مشاهده لینک ، لطفا با نام کاربری خود وارد شوید یا ثبت نام کنید ]) and ASC. And Fambro, a biotech engineer and private pilot intrigued by his aircraft's composite construction, and Anthony, a composites specialist with a background in boat design and fluid dynamics, seemed predestined for this partnership.

But back to the Aptera itself. I'm in the pre-production prototype called Punch, so named for upholstery whose color matches that oft-spiked party drink. But the fabric's long gone, as Punch gets lots of track-testing duty and is tuned now with suspension settings and an a/c motor/controller that are nearing final production specs. With the rotary "shifter" clicked to D3, the most aggressive setting, it's responsive, easily modulated and reasonably quick: Reichenbach says 0–60 mph in under 10 seconds with a 90-mph top speed with its pack of lithium-phosphate-ion-"pixie dust" cells — that last part suggesting that their exact composition is a secret.

But flinging it around the streets near Aptera's headquarters, it seems quicker still, partly due to a go-kart-like agility that's carried off with a surprisingly civil ride. Adding to the feel is a view of the road rushing up at you (the base of the aircraft-evocative windshield plunges toward the pavement) and those wheel pants articulating with the inboard rocker-type front suspension, visible out of the dramatically forward-raked side windows. Steering and brakes are unassisted, but efforts are reasonable as the curb weight is only 1700 lb., about half the weight of a base Honda Accord

Aptera 2e

Earlier, I rode with Reichenbach in another near-production prototype whose interior and exterior detailing is nearing final spec. Entering gracefully through the quasi-gullwing doors takes a few tries, but the door openings are large and once seated, the cabin width seems to split the difference between a Lotus Elise and a Toyota Corolla. There's a large hooded digital speedometer and bar-graph battery state-of-charge indicator, along with a central infotainment screen that offers mind- boggling possibilities. Leg- and head room were surprisingly generous for even my 6- foot-3 frame. And safety is preeminent in the Aptera's design — the final version will have both frontal and side airbags. And if there was any doubt about the strength of the composite construction, it was quelled as eight Aptera employees stood on the roof of a development shell. And that was after the shell had gone through government roof -crush testing!

.It seems as if the future is here today...or at least come this October

(CNN) -- The birth of a child fathered by a 13-year-old boy has sparked an uproar in Britain.

Alfie Patten, who was only 12 when the baby was conceived with his girlfriend, Chantelle Steadman, 15, was first pictured on the front of Friday's tabloid Sun newspaper with his daughter, Maisie Roxanne, after her birth Monday.
He told the newspaper that he thought "it would be good to have a baby."
"I didn't think about how we would afford it. I don't really get pocket money. My dad sometimes gives me £10. When my mum found out, I thought I was going to get in trouble. We wanted to have the baby but were worried about how people would react. I didn't know what it would be like to be a dad. I will be good, though, and care for it."
Chantelle, meanwhile, said, "I'm tired after the birth. I was nervous after going into labor, but otherwise I was quite excited."
She later told the Sun that they wanted to "prove to everyone" that they could give Maisie a "great future" and said both of them planned to stay in school.
The Sun reported that police had investigated but said they were not going to prosecute, as it was "not in anyone's interests."
Conservative party leader David Cameron told the British Press Association that parenthood should not be something the teenagers should even have been contemplating.
Former Conservative party leader Iain Duncan Smith, who runs the Centre for Social Justice think tank, told PA that the birth highlighted another case of "broken Britain" where "anything goes."
"It's not being accusative; it's about pointing out the complete collapse in some parts of society of any sense of what's right and wrong.

"There is no opprobrium any more about behavior, and quite often, children witness behavior that's aggressive, violent, rude and se*ual. It's as if no one is saying this is wrong."
Prime Minister Gordon Brown said "all of us would want to avoid teenage pregnancies," PA reported.
Tony Kerridge, of the sexual health specialist Marie Stopes International, told PA that children needed better education.
"We have got the social aspect of young girls in the UK seeing having a baby as a route to getting their own place," he said.
London's The Times newspaper reported Saturday that in the past decade, more than 40 other boys younger than 14 had fathered children.
The UK has the highest teenage pregnancy rate in Western Europe: 385 girls under the age of 14 became pregnant between 1998 and 2007.

A 13-year-old English boy says he will take a DNA test to prove he is the father of his teenage girlfriend's baby

- Girlfriend pregnant at 14
- 'I will be good'
Alfie Patten, who is 1.2 metres tall, said he made his girlfriend Chantelle Steadman pregnant when she was 14 and he was just 12.
The East Sussex schoolboy, whose voice has not broken and looks much younger than his 13 years, was revealed as Britain's youngest father in The Sun newspaper on February 13.
He vowed to be a good father to daughter Maisie, who was born on February 9.
"When my mum found out, I thought I was going to get in trouble. We wanted to have the baby but were worried how people would react," the 13-year-old told The Sun.
"I didn't know what it would be like to be a dad. I will be good, though, and care for it."
He also defended his girlfriend's reputation after a report in News of the World that other men were claiming to be Maisie's father
"When she found out she was having a baby, I asked her 'Am I the dad?' and she went 'Yeah' so I believe her," Alfie said.
"I didn't know about DNA tests before, but Mum explained it's when they do a swab in your mouth and it tells you if you're the dad.
"So, if I have that, they can all shut up. But I don't really care what people say. And I don't like them being bad about Chantelle."
.Alfie said he did not get pocket money but sometimes received £10 ($22) from his father
.The story rocked Britain and prompted calls for better --- education targeted at children
British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said: "I think all of us would want to avoid teenage pregnancies

Secretary Ed Balls also told London's Telegraph newspaper: "You look at that young lad being a dad when he is so young - and also the teenage girl - and you think it's not right, this looks so terrible.
"Our first reaction has got to be to make sure that the young lad, the teenage mum and the baby get all the support they need.
"And it's also vital that we do everything we can to make sure that these kind of teenage pregnancies don't happen in the future."
The Sun reported Maisie was conceived after Chantelle and Alfie had a single night of unprotected ---.
They found out about the baby when Chantelle was three months pregnant but kept it a secret for another six weeks, until Chantelle's mother became suspicious about her weight.
"The doctor asked me whether we had ---," Chantelle, who is now 15, told The Sun.
"I said yes and he said I should do a pregnancy test. He did the test and said I was pregnant. I started crying and didn't know what to do.
"He said I should tell my mum but I was too scared.
"We didn't think we would need help from our parents. You don't really think about that when you find out you are pregnant. You just think your parents will kill you

Kaka urges Galaxy to sell Beckham

Kaka is keen to see David Beckham remain at Milan

AC Milan star Kaka has called for the Los Angeles Galaxy to allow David Beckham his desired move to Italy.

Beckham, 33, is eager to make his loan deal with Milan a permanent switch, but the MLS side are determined to see him return to California next month.
Kaka says Beckham's form for the San Siro side has made him indispensible.
"Maybe it was a marketing move at first, but today the truth is that he is fundamental," the playmaker told Brazilian television.
"I wish Milan can reach a deal to acquire him permanently because he is a player who can help us now and in the coming seasons.
"He is a player that in the last few games was very decisive, with passes and goals."
Ex-England skipper Beckham could find out on Friday whether he has a future at Milan, according to the Italian club's chief executive Adriano Galliani.
BBC Sport understands that AC Milan representatives will fly to the United States this week for further negotiations.
And Galaxy coach Bruce Arena admitted he is expecting talks between the two parties in the coming days.
He said: "Obviously, I would suspect from the comments I've heard from David that there would be some discussions. But I have nothing confirmed at this point."
The former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder wants to stay at Milan beyond his loan period, which ends on 9 March.

But parent club LA Galaxy want him to return to the United States and Milan have already missed last Friday's deadline that was set by the MLS.

"There is still a bit of distance but Friday could be the decisive day for Beckham," said Galliani.

"The wish of the player is to stay, we will see how the situation evolves."

The Los Angeles club said they have already rejected a £5m offer from the Italian side, with their valuation believed to be around the £10m mark.

Beckham has impressed Milan during his two-month loan period, scoring twice and helping the side move up to third in the table.

His performances also led to him being recalled to the England squad for the friendly against Spain last week.

Despite picking up a slight calf strain in Sunday's derby against Inter, Beckham will travel to Werder Bremen on Wednesday for Milan's Uefa Cup tie.

Obama makes first foreign visit

Barack Obama has arrived in the Canadian capital Ottawa on his first foreign trip as president, for talks with Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

President Obama was greeted by Canada's Governor General

Trade, the global economy and the war in Afghanistan are the main issues to be discussed during the six-hour visit.
As America's biggest trade partner, Canada is worried about the "Buy American" measures in the $787bn (£546m) stimulus plan.
Canadian troops are due to pull out of the Nato force in Afghanistan in 2011.
President Obama was met by Canadian Governor General Michaelle Jean and an escort of Royal Canadian Mounted Police at Ottawa's airport.
With America expanding its forces in Afghanistan by 17,000, Mr Obama would like Canada to reconsider its current commitment to pulling out its combat troops in two years' time.
"But," says the BBC's North America editor Justin Webb, "he's not saying so publicly and he's not likely to press the issue now. On trade as well he'll be diplomatic, promising that he remains committed to free trade with America's most important commercial partner."
Trade between the North American neighbours is worth $1.5bn a day and Mr Harper is likely to seek assurances over the protectionist "Buy American" provision in the huge stimulus package signed into law by President Obama.
Under the provision public works funded by the fund must use only iron, steel and other goods made in the US.
Mr Obama has stressed that the United States will comply with its treaty obligations regarding international trade.

President Obama has a high approval rating north of the border

The president is very popular north of the border: 66% of Canadians wanted him to be president according to a Gallup opinion poll, but the high security surrounding his visit may mean Canadians hardly see him in person.
Environmental activists have urged President Obama to get tough with Canada about its massive oil sands operation which produces a high amount of greenhouse gases blamed for climate change.
In an interview with the Canadian broadcaster, CBC, ahead of the visit Mr Obama said he wanted to work with Canada on new technologies to capture greenhouse gases.

British couple, four children in cocaine bust, reports say

LONDON, England (CNN) -- A British man detained with his wife after cocaine was allegedly found in their luggage at Margarita Airport in Venezuela is wanted in the United Kingdom, police have told CNN.
The couple -- named by the British media as Paul and Laura Makin -- are alleged to have been detained by police after a search revealed 24 kilograms (52 lbs) of cocaine stashed in their bags.
They were traveling with four children who are now in the care of Venezuelan authorities.
The children are reported to include twins Libby and Lucy, aged two, seven-year-old Megan and eight-year-old Jack.
Merseyside police in the United Kingdom have confirmed a warrant for arrest was issued for 31-year-old Paul Makin after he failed to appear in Liverpool Crown Court on February 9.
He was facing charges of affray and possession of an offensive weapon in connection with an incident the previous September.
Paul Makin's grandmother is reported to have expressed shock after being told of her grandson's alleged predicament in Venezuela.
She told the Press Association: "I couldn't believe it. I didn't know he was going to Venezuela and I have no idea what's going on and if it is a mistake."
"I couldn't believe the news of this when I heard it -- that they were caught with coke," she said.
She told PA that the last she heard was that the couple were getting divorced.
The two elder children are reported to attend Mersey Park Primary School in Birkenhead, a town in the county of Merseyside.
The chair of governors, councillor Brian Kenny, told PA today: "Regardless of the rights and wrongs of the allegation my main concern is for the welfare of the four children involved and the two attending our school."
He told PA he'd spoken with the education department about contacting the Foreign Office to ensure the children's welfare.
"It is obviously a very traumatic situation for the children - the whole situation sounds really horrific," Kenny told PA.
The British Foreign Office declined to name the couple but confirmed that a man and woman had been detained at Margarita Airport on Monday, February 16 and that British authorities are providing "appropriate consular assistance."

World Cup tickets to go on sale

[ برای مشاهده لینک ، لطفا با نام کاربری خود وارد شوید یا ثبت نام کنید ]

Around 3m tickets are being made available for the 2010 World Cup
Tickets for the 2010 Fifa World Cup in South Africa are due to go on sale at 1100 GMT as Africa prepares to host the contest for the first time.

Around 3m tickets will be available for the 64 matches, which start next June.
In the first sales phase, applications for tickets will be followed by a random selection draw in April.
Some 450,000 cheaper tickets are being reserved for South African residents of which 120,000 will be issued free to stadium construction workers.
'Worth it'
Overall prices will range from $20 (£14) for a category four ticket reserved for South Africans to $900 for a category one ticket for the final.
"I'm really going to watch... It's a little bit expensive but, you know, I think it's worth it," one man in Johannesburg told the BBC's Network Africa programme.
Although the tournament does not begin for 475 days, there is already huge excitement about the competition in Africa, says BBC southern Africa correspondent Peter Biles in Johannesburg.
Ever since South Africa was awarded the football World Cup, questions have been asked about whether the country is capable of staging a successful tournament, says our correspondent.
This week, about 400 builders working on the construction of Mbombela stadium in Nelspruit were dismissed for going on strike.
Similar disputes have previously broken out at stadiums in Durban and Cape Town, but World Cup organisers say they are confident those projects will be completed by on time.
Ten stadiums in nine cities will play host to the tournament.
Airports are also being upgraded, policing will be improved and a media campaign is encouraging South Africans to think positively about the tournament.
At least 400,000 visitors are expected in South Africa next year.
Fifa has said it hopes every single match will be sold out.
The draw for the 32 teams that qualify for the World Cup will be held in Cape Town in December 2009.

In a bold step forward for the science of crocodile avoidance, wildlife managers in Florida have launched an experiment to see if they can keep crocodiles from entering to residential neighborhoods by taping magnets to their heads

[ برای مشاهده لینک ، لطفا با نام کاربری خود وارد شوید یا ثبت نام کنید ]
A crocodile, sans head-magnet

.The method attempts to disrupt the crocodiles' 'homing' ability
They got the idea from researchers at Mexico's Crocodile Museum in Chiapas, who reported in a biology newsletter they had some success with the method

'We said, "Hey, we might as well give this a try,"' said Lindsey Hord, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's crocodile response coordinator.
The Mexican researchers say they have successfully used the technique to permanently relocate 20 of the reptiles since 2004.
Crocodiles are notoriously territorial, and when biologists move them away from urban areas to new homes in the wild, they often head straight back to the place where they were captured.
Scientists believe they rely in part on the Earth's magnetic fields to navigate, and that taping magnets to both sides of their heads disorients them.
'They're just taped on temporarily,' Hord noted.
'We just put the magnets on when they're captured and since they don't know where we take them, they're lost. The hope would be that they stay where we take them to.'
Hord and his co-workers have tried it on two crocodiles since launching the experiment in January, affixing 'a common old laboratory magnet' to both sides of the animals' heads.
One got run over by a car and died, but the other has yet to return, Hord said.
Crocodiles which return to their old haunts twice after being moved on are sent to zoos or otherwise placed in captivity, something biologists hope to avoid if the magnet experiment works.
'This one is by no means a really well-developed scientific study with a control group. I's just something we thought we would try,' Hord cautioned

David Beckham was greeted by hordes of hysterical fans in Milan yesterday – all over a new pair of football boots
The former England captain attracted hundreds of adoring followers to an Adidas store where he unveiled the new Predator PowerSwerve DB boot.
Excited admirers jostled to get a glimpse of the 33-year-old star, who wore an AC Milan training top to the event and smiled throughout.

Milan has well and truly got a case of Beckham mania

Beckham chatted to some supporters as he squeezed through the gathered crowd – but it was all a little too much for one female fan who collapsed outside the store amid the excitement.
She was treated on the pavement, while others had to be attended to by paramedics after fainting

Beckham, who is on loan at AC Milan from US side LA Galaxy, was overwhelmed by the reaction.
"It's fantastic. I did not expect so many people. Since I've arrived, it's been wonderful," he said.
"When I arrived, they told me that I was coming to Milan for publicity. Instead I came and I love playing in this team.
"Being in a club like this and the experience is so positive, not only inside but also outside."
Beckham has publicly stated that he wants to stay in the Italian fashion capital and discussions are ongoing with Galaxy and Milan representatives about turning his loan move into a multi-million pound transfer.
Not everyone was being greeted by hordes of swooning fans yesterday, however.
Paris Hilton, in Japan to promote clothing brand Samantha Thavasa, looked rather underwhelmed as she arrived at Tokyo – seemingly to be met by just three young female admirers.

Man Utd win 4-1 on penalties

[ برای مشاهده لینک ، لطفا با نام کاربری خود وارد شوید یا ثبت نام کنید ] Manchester United celebrate winning the Carling Cup

Manchester United completed phase two of their attempt to win an historic quintuple as they beat Spurs on penalties in the Carling Cup final.

United, with the Club World Cup already won, emerged victorious from another shoot-out after an encounter low on quality finished goalless after extra-time.
Goalkeeper Ben Foster, given a Wembley opportunity as manager Sir Alex Ferguson rested Edwin van der Sar, was United's hero with a stunning save from Aaron Lennon in normal time.
Foster distinguished himself with a superb save from Jamie O'Hara's spot-kick, and when substitute David Bentley missed, Spurs' fate was sealed as Anderson confirmed United's victory.
Cristiano Ronaldo struck an upright seconds from the end of normal time as both defences dominated a final in which clear-cut opportunities were at a premium.
Ryan Giggs, Carlos Tevez, Ronaldo and Anderson were successful for United from the spot in the shoot-out, but only Vedran Corluka scored for Spurs.
Keeper Foster, 25, whose fledgling career has been dogged by injury, will have hugely impressed watching England coach Fabio Capello - who is not exactly blessed with quality keepers as he plans for next year's World Cup.
There was to be no repeat of Spurs' win against Chelsea in last year's final , with boss Harry Redknapp also denied another Wembley win after lifting the FA Cup with Portsmouth last season.

It capped an almost perfect weekend for United, with their position at the top of the Premier League strengthened after Liverpool's defeat at Middlesbrough and another piece of silverware on its way to Old Trafford.
Ferguson will now turn his attention back to winning the title once more and progressing in the Champions League and FA Cup.
This was not United at their vintage best, with too much below-par passing, but once again they showed that winning mentality when it mattered and when the pressure was at its most intense.
Ferguson kept to his promise to maintain faith with youngsters Darron Gibson, Danny Welbeck and Jonny Evans - but his hopes of calling on Wayne Rooney were dashed after the England striker was ruled out by a virus.
Spurs counterpart Redknapp was spared a selection dilemma when Jonathan Woodgate was ruled out by an Achilles tendon injury, allowing Michael Dawson to partner Ledley King in defence.
Gibson almost made a stunning early impact with a rising 25-yard drive that sailed just over the angle of post and bar with Heurelho Gomes beaten.
Keeper Gomes was called into action again after 15 minutes when he dived low at the near post to turn away Nani's effort as United dominated the opening skirmishes.
Aaron Lennon's pace offered Spurs plenty of hope, and it needed a timely intervention from Ferdinand to clear his cross after Corluka played him in with a pass inside Patrice Evra.
In an enterprising opening, Rio Ferdinand's dipping volley landed just over the bar with Gomes again struggling to make the save.
As the early life went out of the final, Spurs were able to establish a foothold and create a series of promising openings down the flanks, only to fail to find the decisive final ball.
Spurs had successfully kept Ronaldo at arm's length, while youngster Welbeck was having a tough time making an impact in the face of the physical presence of Dawson and King.
Indeed, it only took Ferguson only 10 minutes after the break to decide to remove Welbeck and introduce Anderson into midfield.
And United came within inches of breaking the deadlock on the hour when Tevez was just off target as he tried to divert Evans' shot past Gomes.
Ronaldo's frustration was plain to see when he was booked for diving by referee Chris Foy in the 66th minute as he tumbled in a collision with Spurs captain King just inside the area - a decision that was a desperately close call.

[ برای مشاهده لینک ، لطفا با نام کاربری خود وارد شوید یا ثبت نام کنید ] Ronaldo thought he should have had a second-half penalty

John O'Shea, who had been fortunate to escape a second yellow card for a tackle on Luka Modric that went unpunished, was replaced by Nemanja Vidic as Ferguson stiffened up United's central defence.
Ronaldo almost won the cup for United in the dying seconds of stoppage time when he cut inside and lashed in a shot that bounced off the upright with Nani unable to turn in the rebound.
It meant extra time - and the inevitable introduction of Ryan Giggs for the tiring Gibson.
Lennon had been at the heart of most of Spurs' best moments, but he had run himself to a standstill and it was no surprise when he was replaced by Bentley 10 minutes into extra-time.
As fatigue sent in among both sets of players, it was going to take a mistake or a moment of inspiration to decide the destiny of the cup in the closing stages. Modric almost provided it after 115 minutes with a run into the box that ended with Foster saving well with his legs from Darren Bent.
And Evra almost did likewise at the other end with a shot that was just over the top as Gomes could only look on.
It was the last meaningful action as a final that was high on endeavour but low on moments of genuine quality went to penalties.
Giggs gave United the perfect start in the shoot-out, and Foster set up the win with a fine save from O'Hara's spot-kick.
Tevez and Corluka exchanged successful penalties, but Bentley sent his wide after Ronaldo had slotted his away.
Anderson stepped forward to complete the formalities and United had achieved the first part of their pursuit of the five major trophies on offer to them this season.

Toyota arm seeks government loan

[ برای مشاهده لینک ، لطفا با نام کاربری خود وارد شوید یا ثبت نام کنید ]

Toyota has suffered from falling demand in the downturn

Toyota, the world's biggest carmaker, has said it is seeking a state loan to help its car financing unit.
The company said Toyota Financial Services was in talks with the government-backed Japan Bank for International Co-operation.
Local media reports said that it had applied for a 200bn-yen ($2bn; £1.45bn) loan. However, Toyota said no details had been decided.
Toyota has said it expects to report its first annual loss since 1950.
The Japan Bank for International Co-operation was set up last year to help struggling Japanese businesses.

Japan's Finance Ministry said earlier on Tuesday that it would provide an additional $5bn to the bank from its foreign exchange reserves.

'Not in danger'
Toyota Financial Services does 70% of its business in the US, where the credit crunch has made it harder to offer financing and the economic downturn has hit demand for vehicles.
General Motors' financing arm, GMAC, has been hit by losses and has received a $6bn bail-out from the US government.
Analysts said that the news did not mean that Toyota was in trouble.
"Toyota is not in danger. It's out to get the lowest price for funding that the strength of its credit can get," said Yasuaki Iwamoto, an analyst at Okasan Securities, told Reuters news agency.
"On the balance sheet, it doesn't matter if the funds are private or public."
Reports also said that Nissan was considering various types of government aid.
US carmakers General Motors and Chrysler have received $17.4bn from the US government.
Toyota ended GM's 77-year reign as the world's largest carmaker last year as its sales surpassed its US rival.

'More bad news' on climate change

[ برای مشاهده لینک ، لطفا با نام کاربری خود وارد شوید یا ثبت نام کنید ] Scientists will present the most recent data on sea level rise

More bad news on climate change is expected as more than 2,000 climate scientists gather in Copenhagen.
They will be trying to pull together the latest research on global warming ahead of political negotiations later in the year.
The scientists are concerned that the 2007 reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) are already out of date.
Their data suggests greater rises in sea levels this century.
For the scientists gathering in the Danish capital, this meeting is about removing as much wriggle room as possible from the political negotiations on a new global climate treaty taking place in December.
While the IPCC reports of 2007 were praised for their recognition of the causes of global warming, the slow, consensus-based nature of the process, meant more recent data was not included.

Greater clarity
But this meeting is happening outside the IPCC, so it will have the very latest estimates, and the scientists will not need to agree every word with the political masters.
This unfettered atmosphere is likely to produce greater clarity about the scale of some very worrying trends, especially sea level rise.
The IPCC was widely criticised for stating that sea level rise this century would only amount to 59cm (23in).
The most recent data, to be presented here, will suggest a far higher figure with dramatic implications for many island nations and coastal regions.
The meeting is being organised by the University of Copenhagen. Its prorector Lykke Friis said the scientists would be presenting the latest and the clearest information, meaning political leaders would not have the excuse that they needed more research before agreeing on a deal.
As well as hearing from scientists, the meeting will also look at the social and economic impacts of the global rise in temperatures.

There was an eight per cent drop last year in the number of people in A&E with knife wounds

The number of stab wound victims admitted to hospital has fallen – and more offenders are being jailed for carrying a knife
There was an eight per cent drop last year in the number of people in A&E with knife wounds, according to NHS figures.
Meanwhile, the number of criminals jailed for knife crimes in the last three months of 2008 rose by 23 per cent on the same period in 2007, Ministry of Justice figures revealed

And the average length of sentences handed down by the courts also went up, by 38 per cent to 26 weeks.
'This sends a very important message to knife criminals and would-be knife carriers to pack it in,' said justice secretary Jack Straw.
'These figures underline our determination to tackle knife crime. And they show the tough approach is working.'
However, the number of suspended sentences given out shot up by 63 per cent, the quarterly statistics bulletin on knife crime showed

Obama says he doesn't have 'rubber-stamp Senate'

(CNN) -- President Obama said Wednesday that he's under no illusions that he'll have a "rubber-stamp Senate" now that Sen. Arlen Specter has switched parties to join the Democrats.

"To my Republican friends, I want them to realize that me reaching out to them has been genuine," Obama said at a prime time news conference capping his 100th day in office.
"I can't sort of define bipartisanship as simply being willing to accept certain theories of theirs that we tried for eight years and didn't work and the American people voted to change."
Specter on Tuesday announced he was changing parties, saying he's found himself increasingly "at odds with the Republican philosophy." He also admitted Wednesday he was worried about the prospects of facing a Republican primary in order to keep his seat next year.
Specter's move puts the Democrats one shy of a filibuster-proof Senate majority of 60 seats. Senate Democrats can reach the 60-seat mark if courts uphold Al Franken's disputed recount victory in Minnesota.

President Obama speaks on the 100th day of his administration.

Senate Democrats can reach the 60-seat mark if courts uphold Al Franken's disputed recount victory in Minnesota.

As if to prove the president's point, Specter voted against Obama's budget plan shortly before the news conference.

Asked if the GOP is in desperate straits, Obama said, "Politics in America changes very quick. And I'm a big believer that things are never as good as they seem and never as bad as they seem."

Obama has faced criticism from Republicans that he hasn't been reaching across the aisle. His budget moved through both chambers of Congress on Wednesday with no GOP support, and his economic stimulus plan passed with just three Republican votes from the Senate.

The president said he thinks the administration has taken steps to restore confidence in the American people, noting that "simply opposing our approach on every front is probably not a good political strategy."
In his first 100 days, he's been "sobered by the fact that change in Washington comes slow," said Obama.

"That there is still a certain quotient of political posturing and bickering that takes place even when we're in the middle of really big crises," he said, adding that he'd like for everyone to say "let's take a time-out on some of the political games."
In a shift from his previous news conferences which were dominated by questions about the economy ([ برای مشاهده لینک ، لطفا با نام کاربری خود وارد شوید یا ثبت نام کنید ]), Obama fielded multiple queries on the foreign policy front.
The president said a recent uptick in violence in Iraq won't affect his plan for a phased military withdrawal.
"Civilian deaths, incidents of bombings ... remain very low relative to what was going on last year," Obama said. "You haven't seen the kinds of huge spikes that you were seeing for a time. The political system is holding and functioning in Iraq."
Obama said more details need to be nailed down before U.S. troops leave Iraq -- including how oil revenues will be divided, what the powers of provincial governments there will be and the political relationships between minority Kurds, Sunnis and Shiites -- including the armed Sons of Iraq groups.
On Pakistan, the president said the United States has "huge national security interests in making sure that Pakistan is stable" and doesn't end up a "nuclear-armed militant state."
"I am gravely concerned about the situation in Pakistan, not because I think that they're immediately going to be overrun and the Taliban would take over in Pakistan. I'm more concerned that the civilian government there right now is very fragile and don't seem to have the capacity to deliver basic services," he said.
Obama also said Wednesday he is "very comfortable" with his decision to ban interrogation techniques like waterboarding, which he called torture.

[ برای مشاهده لینک ، لطفا با نام کاربری خود وارد شوید یا ثبت نام کنید ]

The president called the practice a recruiting tool for terrorist groups like al Qaeda, citing World War II-era British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who also rejected such "enhanced interrogation" techniques.

"Churchill understood that if you start taking shortcuts, over time that corrodes what's best in a people," Obama said. "It corrodes the character of a country."

Asked about the previous administration, he said, "I think that whatever legal rationale were used, it was a mistake."

On the recent outbreaks of swine flu, Obama insisted his administration is "prepared to do whatever it takes to control the impact of the virus."

"I've asked every American to take the same steps you would take to prevent any other flu: Keep your hands washed; cover your mouth when you cough; stay home from work if you're sick; and keep your children home from school if they're sick," he said.

Obama downplayed the possibility of closing the border with Mexico as a way to control the virus, also known by its clinical name of H1N1.

"It would be akin to closing the barn door after the horses are out," Obama said.
The first cases of the virus were detected in Mexico, where health officials suspect swine flu in more than 150 other deaths and roughly 2,500 illnesses. Only 26 cases have so far been confirmed, including the seven fatal cases.
So far, the World Health Organization has reported 148 cases in nine countries.
Obama said the $1.5 billion he asked from Congress to help fight the outbreaks will help government health officials monitor and track the virus and replenish the supply of antiviral drugs.
On immigration, Obama said he wants to work with members of Congress, including former Republican presidential rival Sen. John McCain, to revive efforts to reform the system.
Obama said he hopes lawmakers will begin working on such reform legislation and expects the process to be under way within the year.
Both Obama and McCain supported an ultimately failed plan backed by then-President Bush that would have fined illegal immigrants living in the United States but provided a pathway to citizenship for some.
Obama's news conference came just hours after both chambers of Congress passed his $3.4 trillion budget resolution for fiscal year 2010.
The measure approves most of Obama's key spending priorities and sets the federal government in a new direction with major increases for energy, education and health care programs.
Obama said his budget begins to lay a "new foundation" that will strengthen the U.S. economy.
"But even as we clear away the wreckage of this recession, I've also said that we can't go back to an economy that is built on a pile of sand -- on inflated home prices and maxed-out credit cards; on overleveraged banks and outdated regulations that allowed the recklessness of a few to threaten the prosperity of all," he said.

The United States "will see a better day," but there's still a lot of work to do, he said.
"I want to thank the American people for their support and their patience during these trying times, and I look forward to working with you in the next hundred days, in the hundred days after that, all of the hundreds of days to follow, to make sure that this country is what it can be."

"Not only do these two clubs are always faced with a lot of problems in issuing their financial documents, but are making losses. Therefore, their shares can not be traded on the stock market," said Mehdi Elmolhoda, a spokesman for the over-the-counter (OTC) trading sector in Iran's Stock Market Organization.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said last week that Esteqlal and Persepolis' shares should be offered to private investors as they are the most popular sports clubs in the country and have millions of fans.

"However, it is possible that these two clubs offer their shares in OTC stock market after they remove their financial ambiguities," Elmolhoda added.

Ronaldo dismisses Madrid, fixes eyes on Rome
[ برای مشاهده لینک ، لطفا با نام کاربری خود وارد شوید یا ثبت نام کنید ]

As his side prepares for a highly-anticipated Champions League final, United ace Cristiano Ronaldo announced his intention to stay at Old Trafford next season.
Despite being contracted to the Red Devils until 2012, the World Player of the Year has been consistently linked with a move to Spain's Real Madrid.
On Thursday, in an interview with Spanish radio station Atena 3, Ronaldo moved to end speculation about a future in the Spanish club -- at least for the next 12 months.
"At the moment I am only thinking about the Champions League final independently of what will happen to me or my team-mates next season," he said.
"I am sure Perez would create an incredible team at Madrid but at the moment I am at United and I don't care about what happens there," he said referring to a pledge by Florentino Perez to sign as many superstar as he can as part of his campaign to be elected Real Madrid club president.
By dismissing Real transfer, the Portuguese star gave a boost to his teammates ahead of their clash with another Spanish powerhouse -- Barcelona.
United and Barca have set a date next Wednesday in Rome, in what perceives to be a classic showdown between the two clubs famous for displaying attacking football.
Many have linked the key to victory for either side in the performance of Ronaldo and Barcelona's superstar Lionel Messi, but the United winger disagrees.
"It's a battle of teams," Ronaldo said. "Without my team I won't win and neither will Messi without his team-mates."
"It's clear that we are the two best teams in Europe. It will be the match every fan dreamed about," he said, CNN reported.

New tech massively expands DVD storage
[ برای مشاهده لینک ، لطفا با نام کاربری خود وارد شوید یا ثبت نام کنید ]

A novel optical recording method known as "five-dimensional" recording could dramatically increase the storage capacity of standard DVDs to 1.6 terabytes.
Nature journal reports suggests that the novel approach of adding dimension to current technology can put as much as 1.6 terabytes of information on a DVD-sized disc.
Nanometer-scale particles of gold are used as a recording medium and information is recorded in a range of different color wavelengths on the same physical disc location.
Polarization of laser light affects its absorption by these nanoparticles, which allows the researchers to record different layers of information at different angles.
Simultaneous use of color and polarization together with multi-layer recording of information adds a third spatial dimension.
Unlike some recording methods such as holographic methods which are complex and all-or-nothing approaches, 5-D recording is a "bit-by-bit" recording process, which means recording and reading speeds would be comparatively low.
The holographic method is a method of producing a three-dimensional image of an object by recording on a photographic plate or film the pattern of interference formed by a split laser beam and then illuminating the pattern either with a laser or with ordinary light. It can also store more data than DVDs or Blue-ray because they store information on the disc in three dimensions.
Scientists are expressing hope about commercializing this simple straightforward approach which is capable of integrating with existing technology.

Iran serial killer inspired by Agatha Christie

Iranian police arrest the country's first suspected female serial killer who says patterned crimes on the stories of English crime novelist Agatha Christie.

The 32-year-old suspect, called 'Mahin,' stands accused of killing at least six people, including five women in the city of Qazvin, about 160km (100 miles) northwest of Tehran.

"Mahin in her confessions said that she had taken patterns from Agatha Christie books and had been trying not to leave any trace of herself," Mohammad Baqer Olfat, the Qazvin prosecutor, told Iranian journalists.

Mahin also confessed that she carefully chose her victims, targeting middle-aged and elderly women and offering them lifts after picking them up at shrines where they had been praying.

She offered the victims poisoned fruit juice which contained anesthetics, strangled them to death to steal their jewelry and possessions. She later dumped the bodies in secluded spots.

Mahin claimed that she committed the crimes between February and May as she was in desperate need of money to pay her debts of more than $25,000.

Detectives have also detained two men who were involved in the crimes by selling illegal drugs to the murderer.

US court: cigarette companies lied to smokers

[ برای مشاهده لینک ، لطفا با نام کاربری خود وارد شوید یا ثبت نام کنید ]

A US federal appeals court has issued a ruling that the tobacco industry has been misleading consumers by labeling some cigarettes "light" or "natural."

"We affirm in large part the finding of liability," the Washington appeals court said in its ruling on the case on Friday.

"The court had before it sufficient evidence from which to conclude that defendant's executives ... knew about the negative health consequences of smoking, the addictiveness and manipulation of nicotine," the court added.

According to the court, the company bosses also knew about "the harmfulness of secondhand smoke and the concept of smoker compensation, which makes light cigarettes no less harmful than regular cigarettes and possibly more".

"Defendants knew of their falsity at the time and made the statements with the intent to deceive," the ruling said.

However, the court rejected the US government's request for additional penalties against cigarette makers.

Defendants in the case included Altria Group Inc.'s (MO) Philip Morris subsidiary, Reynolds American Inc. (RAI), British American Tobacco PLC (BTI) and Lorillard Inc. (LO).

.It's always fun to write about research that you can actually try out for yourself

Try this: Take a photo and upload it to Facebook, then after a day or so, note what the URL to the picture is (the actual photo, not the page on which the photo resides), and then delete it. Come back a month later and see if the link works. Chances are: It will

Facebook isn't alone here. Researchers at Cambridge University (so you know this is legit, people!) have found that nearly half of the social networking sites don't immediately delete pictures when a user requests they be removed. In general, photo-centric websites like Flickr were found to be better at quickly removing deleted photos upon request

?Why do "deleted" photos stick around so long

The problem relates to the way data is stored on large websites: While your personal computer only keeps one copy of a file, large-scale services like Facebook rely on what are called content delivery networks to manage data and distribution. It's a complex system wherein data is copied to multiple intermediate devices, usually to speed up access to files when millions of people are trying to access the service simultaneously. (Yahoo! Tech is served by dozens of servers, for example.) But because changes aren't reflected across the CDN immediately, ghost copies of files tend to linger for days or weeks

In the case of Facebook, the company says data may hang around until the URL in question is reused, which is usually "after a short period of time." Though obviously that time can vary considerably

Of course, once a photo escapes from the walled garden of a social network like Facebook, the chances of deleting it permanently fall even further. Google's caching system is remarkably efficient at archiving copies of web content, long after it's removed from the web. Anyone who's ever used Google Image Search can likely tell you a story about clicking on a thumbnail image, only to find that the image has been deleted from the website in question -- yet the thumbnail remains on Google for months. And then there are services like the Wayback Machine, which copy entire websites for posterity, archiving data and pictures forever

The lesson: Those drunken party photos you don't want people to see? Simply don't upload them to the web, ever, because trying to delete them after you sober up is a tough proposition

ONE. Don't Drive

[ برای مشاهده لینک ، لطفا با نام کاربری خود وارد شوید یا ثبت نام کنید ]

Want your car to last? Don't use it. That sounds obvious, but it's worth keeping in mind

Chances are there are plenty of times when you currently use your car that you could be walking, biking, using public transportation or carpooling — choices that are better for the environment, your wallet, your health, and the car you won't be driving. It's simple: The less you drive, the longer your car will last

TWO. Make Fewer Short Trips

Short trips of less than 10 minutes can be particularly hard on a car, resulting in excessive wear and tear. During a short trip, your car's engine never has a chance to reach its full operating temperature

MORE AT CARS.COM

So what? Here's why it matters: One of the byproducts of engine combustion is water. When an engine reaches its operating temperature that water turns to vapor and is expunged, either out the tailpipe or the crankcase ventilation system. On a short trip, however, that water stays inside your car's engine and exhaust. Unfortunately, water is one of only three ingredients necessary to make rust (you've already got the other two, oxygen and metal), and rust kills. Look at any of my brother's cars

A further complication of condensation and water is that it dilutes your oil, which then does a poorer job of lubricating the engine. If you can't avoid taking lots of short trips, we recommend you change your oil frequently, such as every 2,000-3,000 miles

THREE. When Shopping for a New Car, Choose Carefully

If you're in the market for a new car — and you'd like that car to last until the start of the Sasha Obama administration — be sure to choose a car company that's going to be around for a while, with a good reputation for supplying parts

Here's a sad but true fact: Too many perfectly good-running cars are junked because it's hard to get parts for them. So here's our recommendation: Talk to your local independent mechanic and find a company that has a good reputation for supplying parts for its older vehicles. Our personal favorites are Volvo, Toyota and Saab (although everything is subject to change these days). These brands have a reputation for longevity, so it's understandable that they'd want to make sure they make parts available for many years

FOUR. Drive Gently

.When you drive, do your car a favor and drive gently

Think of your car like your own body. What's more likely to land you in a full-body cast: A gentle walk around the park, or a season of rugby? We rest our case

What does "drive gently" mean? It means accelerating slowly, not snapping your head back. It means anticipating your braking so you can brake gently and avoid panic stops. It means not revving your engine in the driveway when it's cold, before the oil is warm and freely circulating

If it's below freezing outside, allow your car a minute or so to warm up before driving it hard. Then drive slowly for another minute or two, until the engine oil has warmed up and started to fully lubricate all the components

Finally, if your car is new, follow the break-in recommendations in your owner's manual. Regardless of the manufacturer's recommendation, we advise changing your car's oil after your inaugural 1,000 miles

FIVE. Watch for Engine Warning Signs

It's OK to drive your car short distances with certain warning lights illuminated or gauges out of their normal range, but there are three that you dismiss at your car's peril: the engine oil light, the engine temperature gauge and the brake light. A few minutes of an excessively hot engine or low oil pressure and the groceries you're hauling in the back could suddenly be worth more than your car. A couple of minutes with the brake light on and you might end up playing bumper cars with the Cadillac Escalade ahead of you. The one being driven by Tony Soprano. In a bad mood

Get in the habit of glancing at your engine's temperature gauge and warning lights. If the idiot lights come on, pull over as soon as it's safe to do so and shut off the engine. You might just save yourself an expensive engine rebuild — much to the disappointment of your mechanic

SIX. Unload Extra Weight

Most of us know what it feels like to be hauling a few extra doughnuts around the midriff, so to speak. It places extra demands on our engine, and it creates suspension, braking and even exhaust problems. If you catch our drift

It's no different with your car. Extra weight adds stress to critical systems and causes premature wear. Check your car right now. What's in there that can come out? Toss out the four bowling balls, the barbells and the lead-lined box of plutonium fuel rods. You might even consider removing your mother-in-law — as long as she doesn't have to come inside the house, that is

You should also remove anything that causes additional drag. Creating aerodynamic drag is similar to adding weight in that it increases the demand on your engine, so think about removing the big, flat bug shield that sticks up above your hood. Remove any roof racks you're not actively using, and take the cargo carrier off the top of the minivan. We know it gives you some hope of looking cool, like you do something besides haul kids around, but it's killing your gas mileage and making your engine work harder

SEVEN. Do Your Regular Maintenance

Skipping regularly scheduled maintenance intervals is one of the quickest ways to assure your car finds its way to an early grave. Regular oil changes and oil, fuel and air filter changes all help make sure your car has what it needs to run without problems: clean air and clean fuel, plus fresh, uncontaminated oil to prevent wear and tear

An added bonus to regular service? It gives good mechanics an opportunity to spot problems before they balloon into something more serious

If you're wondering how often to do these things, there's a book that explains it all to you. It's called the owner's manual. You'll find it in your glove box, shrink-wrapped in plastic, because — if you're like most of us — you've probably never looked at it. In the back you'll find a list of service intervals, and the services that are recommended during each of them. If intervals in the book stop at 120,000 miles, that doesn't mean you're done with maintenance. Go back to the beginning and start over (so, for instance, do all the services called for in the 7,500-mile service at 127,500). Nice try, though

By the way, if you're fretting over the ongoing cost of routine service, remember our maxim: "It's the stingy man who makes the most boat payments!"

EIGHT. Change Oil and Other Vital Fluids

Your car's fluids will often be changed during regular service intervals, but it's important enough that we wanted to mention it separately. As you drive your car, and even if it just sits in the driveway, your car's fluids degrade

That's a problem because each of the fluids in your car is vital to the long-term health of the engine, transmission, steering or brakes. Simply keeping the fluids topped off isn't enough because over time they lose important properties — like their ability to remove heat and lubricate, as well as the ability to prevent rust and freezing

What fluids are we talking about? Transmission, differential, brake and power-steering fluid; oil; and antifreeze. Windshield washer fluid? Not so important

Regular transmission and differential fluid changes are often overlooked, but this service is very important. If you really want to keep your car forever, our suggestion is to get these fluids changed every 60,000 miles whether your owner's manual recommends it or not. Fresh, clean transmission fluid assures that your car's drivetrain stays cool and uncontaminated. Some cars, by the way, have two separate differentials. Be sure to ask your mechanic if yours is one, and make sure that both sets of differential oil get changed. It's easy to overlook this particular service, but you do so at your own peril: A cooked differential can cost thousands of dollars to repair. Routine maintenance service is much less expensive; it should cost about $150 to get your transmission fluid flushed and replaced, and another $100 to do both differentials

By the way, if your mechanic tries to sell you new blinker fluid, lace up your Pro-Keds and run out of there as fast as you can

NINE. Get Problems Checked Out Sooner Rather Than Later

This is like saying "Don't let a cold turn into pneumonia." If you have a small problem with your car, get it checked out sooner rather than later

For example, a torn CV boot is a common problem and a simple repair. Delay getting it fixed, though, and you'll eventually end up by the side of the road, unable to drive and forced to fork over some additional money for a tow and a whole new axle

That's just one example. There are many other problems that start small but balloon into something much larger if they're not addressed right away. Don't believe in this theory? Talk to the secretary of the Treasury Department

Above all, make sure your car is safe to drive. If you have any doubts about such things as brakes, brake lines, ball joints, tie rods, airbags, seat belts or even the structural integrity of your car, get it checked out. Remember: Even though you want your car to last a long time, you still want to outlive your car

TEN. Find a Mechanic You Trust

Find a mechanic you trust intuitively. Think of maintaining your car as a partnership between you and your mechanic. Or, more precisely, between your bank account and the bank holding the loan on your mechanic's yacht. Money only moves in one direction, and in exchange you get a car that runs reliably

Having a good working relationship with your mechanic will enable you to make wise decisions when the time comes — and you won't have nagging doubts about the truthfulness of what you're being told. This is such an important point we wrote an entire feature on how to develop a great relationship with your mechanic. All platonic, mind you

How do you find a great mechanic? When you find someone you think you like, ask for recommendations from longtime customers. If you're new to an area, or your mechanic just retired to the Home for Aged Grease Monkeys, ask friends or try searching our database of recommended mechanics, the Mechanics Files

ELEVEN. Discuss Your Plans With Your Mechanic

Not everyone wants a car to last for 200,000 miles. As a result, mechanics don't always have a long-term mindset when they perform routine service

If your mechanic knows you're in this for the long term, he'll spend a little more time looking things over when you bring in your car

You'll need to remind him regularly that you're hoping for a long, healthy life for your car. Ask him to keep that in mind as he works on your car. Like everyone else, mechanics can be myopic. They tend to focus on the boat payment at hand, and can easily overlook important signs and symptoms that might be right next to their elbows

TWELVE. If You Can't Avoid Salt, Wash Your Car Frequently

If you live in a part of the country that gets more than a few inches of snow during the winter, you're probably very familiar with the ravages of road salt

By kick-starting rust, salt wreaks havoc on the body and other components. Our advice is simple: During the winter, when there's salt on the roads, wash your car's undercarriage as often as possible. You'll remove much of the salt that's eating away your car, and that's a good thing

THIRTEEN. Skip the Heated Garage

Garages and carports are great things. Do you want to spend 10 minutes every morning during the winter freezing your bolts off, scraping ice and snow off your car? Of course not

A garage allows you to avoid that supreme morning hassle, and it also helps slow the steady deterioration of your car's interior and exterior caused by bright sun and storms

However, there's a big exception to this rule: heated garages. Our advice is to skip the heated garage, which can accelerate your car's march towards its grave. Here's why: Heat accelerates oxidation, also known as rust. You drive in the garage with snow and ice on your car, it melts, and the water and salt mix in that nice, warm petri dish and, come morning, there's less of your car there

!FOURTEEN. Be Proud

Owning an older car should be a source of pride. You're showing that you're sensible, not swayed by the latest models and capable of keeping your car well maintained. Who knows? That sort of no-frills common sense can be very appealing to members of the opposite ---. It might even land you a date! After all, who wants somebody who's always got his eye on a new model

Even if it doesn't score you the babe or hunk of your dreams, owning an older car can offer you something else: a truly liberating experience. You no longer care about scratches, dents or bird droppings

!And, best of all? It's paid for

So who cares what your neighbors think? Shoot them a broad, smug smile the next time they eye your jalopy puttering down the street

MIAMI – Hurricane Bill howled over the open Atlantic as a dangerous Category 4 storm Wednesday, and it could be energized by warmer waters as it moves north.
Forecasters said Bill should begin pushing large swells toward Bermuda and parts of the southeastern U.S. coast by the weekend, but it wasn't yet clear how close the storm will come to land.

The National Hurricane Center also said people in the Leeward Islands should keep an eye on the storm, though its core was expected to pass well to the northeast of the chain in the next 24 hours. Fishermen in Antigua were advised to dock their boats.
As strong as Bill already is, it could get stronger because it's traveling into warmer waters in the Atlantic that could intensify the storm, said senior hurricane specialist Lixion Avila.

"The warm ocean is like the fuel for car," Avila said Wednesday. "If you get high octane gas you get more power — that's what warmer water does."

Bill was maintaining a top wind speed of 135 mph Wednesday, hours after it became a Category 4 storm, and forecasters said it could get stronger. The storm's center was located 335 miles east of the Leeward Islands and it was moving west-northwest near 20 mph.

Islands in the northeast Caribbean could see bigger waves from the storm in the next day or two.

The most significant threat could be to Bermuda, which the storm could pass in three or four days, forecasters said. But it also could move directly between Bermuda and the eastern coast of the U.S. without making landfall.

It was too early to tell if Bill would veer close to shore over the weekend or swing away from the East Coast of the U.S., but the five-day forecast predicted its center would pass well offshore of the North Carolina-Virginia line Saturday.

A cold front was expected to turn Bill to the northeast, but it wasn't clear when that would happen, Blake said.

WASHINGTON – The story of humankind is reaching back another million years as scientists learn more about "Ardi," a hominid who lived 4.4 million years ago in what is now Ethiopia. The 110-pound, 4-foot female roamed forests a million years before the famous Lucy, long studied as the earliest skeleton of a human ancestor.

[ برای مشاهده لینک ، لطفا با نام کاربری خود وارد شوید یا ثبت نام کنید ]

This older skeleton reverses the common wisdom of human evolution, said anthropologist C. Owen Lovejoy of Kent State University.

Rather than humans evolving from an ancient chimp-like creature, the new find provides evidence that chimps and humans evolved from some long-ago common ancestor — but each evolved and changed separately along the way.

"This is not that common ancestor, but it's the closest we have ever been able to come," said Tim White, director of the Human Evolution Research Center at the University of California, Berkeley.

[ برای مشاهده لینک ، لطفا با نام کاربری خود وارد شوید یا ثبت نام کنید ] wx102.jpg?x=140&y=345&q=85&sig=EsUqAhyD9lOV0YbKXDwz7Q--

The lines that evolved into modern humans and living apes probably shared an ancestor 6 million to 7 million years ago, White said in a telephone interview.

But Ardi has many traits that do not appear in modern-day African apes, leading to the conclusion that the apes evolved extensively since we shared that last common ancestor.

A study of Ardi, under way since the first bones were discovered in 1994, indicates the species lived in the woodlands and could climb on all fours along tree branches, but the development of their arms and legs indicates they didn't spend much time in the trees. And they could walk upright, on two legs, when on the ground.

Formally dubbed Ardipithecus ramidus — which means root of the ground ape — the find is detailed in 11 research papers published Thursday by the journal Science.

"This is one of the most important discoveries for the study of human evolution," said David Pilbeam, curator of paleoanthropology at Harvard's Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology.

"It is relatively complete in that it preserves head, hands, feet and some critical parts in between. It represents a genus plausibly ancestral to Australopithecus — itself ancestral to our genus Homo," said Pilbeam, who was not part of the research teams.

Scientists assembled the skeleton from 125 pieces.

Lucy, also found in Africa, thrived a million years after Ardi and was of the more human-like genus Australopithecus.

[ برای مشاهده لینک ، لطفا با نام کاربری خود وارد شوید یا ثبت نام کنید ]

"In Ardipithecus we have an unspecialized form that hasn't evolved very far in the direction of Australopithecus. So when you go from head to toe, you're seeing a mosaic creature that is neither chimpanzee, nor is it human. It is Ardipithecus," said White.

White noted that Charles Darwin, whose research in the 19th century paved the way for the science of evolution, was cautious about the last common ancestor between humans and apes.

[ برای مشاهده لینک ، لطفا با نام کاربری خود وارد شوید یا ثبت نام کنید ]

"Darwin said we have to be really careful. The only way we're really going to know what this last common ancestor looked like is to go and find it. Well, at 4.4 million years ago we found something pretty close to it," White said. "And, just like Darwin appreciated, evolution of the ape lineages and the human lineage has been going on independently since the time those lines split, since that last common ancestor we shared."

[ برای مشاهده لینک ، لطفا با نام کاربری خود وارد شوید یا ثبت نام کنید ]

Some details about Ardi in the collection of papers:
• Ardi was found in Ethiopia's Afar Rift, where many fossils of ancient plants and animals have been discovered. Findings near the skeleton indicate that at the time it was a wooded environment. Fossils of 29 species of birds and 20 species of small mammals were found at the site.

[ برای مشاهده لینک ، لطفا با نام کاربری خود وارد شوید یا ثبت نام کنید ]

• Geologist Giday WoldeGabriel of Los Alamos National Laboratory was able to use volcanic layers above and below the fossil to date it to 4.4 million years ago.

• Ardi's upper canine teeth are more like the stubby ones of modern humans than the long, sharp, pointed ones of male chimpanzees and most other primates. An analysis of the tooth enamel suggests a diverse diet, including fruit and other woodland-based foods such as nuts and leaves.

• Paleoanthropologist Gen Suwa of the University of Tokyo reported that Ardi's face had a projecting muzzle, giving her an ape-like appearance. But it didn't thrust forward quite as much as the lower faces of modern African apes do. Some features of her skull, such as the ridge above the eye socket, are quite different from those of chimpanzees. The details of the bottom of the skull, where nerves and blood vessels enter the brain, indicate that Ardi's brain was positioned in a way similar to modern humans, possibly suggesting that the hominid brain may have been already poised to expand areas involving aspects of visual and spatial perception.

• Ardi's hand and wrist were a mix of primitive traits and a few new ones, but they don't include the hallmark traits of the modern tree-hanging, knuckle-walking chimps and gorillas. She had relatively short palms and fingers which were flexible, allowing her to support her body weight on her palms while moving along tree branches, but she had to be a careful climber because she lacked the anatomical features that allow modern-day African apes to swing, hang and easily move through the trees.

• The pelvis and hip show the gluteal muscles were positioned so she could walk upright.

• Her feet were rigid enough for walking but still had a grasping big toe for use in climbing.

The research was funded by the National Science Foundation, the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics of the University of California, Los Alamos National Laboratory, the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science and others.

Even with the strides that cars have made in recent years, let's face it: There have been some real stinkers, too. Whether poorly executed, ill-conceived or downright dreadful to look at, these 10 stand out for all the wrong reasons. A car had to be sold at any point in the 2000s to be eligible for this list; some of these models were only on the market for a few years, while others are still being sold today

TEN. Pontiac Aztek

2001-2005

The Aztek was criticized for the duration of its life for its ghastly styling. Design is subjective, so what do you think of the Aztek shown here? Were the critics wrong? Yeah, we didn't think so

NINE. Daewoo Anything

1999-2002

We had just tested a Suzuki Esteem and marveled at how competent even the cheapest little econoboxes had become when a leather-lined Leganza midsize sedan showed up — the best Daewoohad to offer. We mused over which would kill us first: the toxic gases from the cheap interior or the recalcitrant transmission and inconsistent acceleration. Three days into the loan, the first Daewoo crash tests in U.S. history came out, and we called Daewoo and told them to come pick up the car. We'd never done that before, and we haven't since.

EIGHT. Isuzu VehiCROSS

1999-2002

[ برای مشاهده لینک ، لطفا با نام کاربری خود وارد شوید یا ثبت نام کنید ]
Isuzu VehiCROSS

The outrageous Isuzu VehiCROSS two-door SUV, whose extreme styling drew varied reactions, lasted from 1999 to 2001, and even that's surprising. The fanglike grille uprights made it look like it would eat you, which was scary mainly because inside the VehiCROSS was a place no one wanted to be. Headroom was minimal, and the low roof blocked even shorter drivers' view. If the noisy cabin didn't get to you, the punishing ride would. Isuzu deserved credit for taking a chance then on a design likely to find more admirers now, and it deserved scorn for a 2001 sticker price that would be just as preposterous in the current market. The VehiCROSS cost $30,350 by the time it fired up its interplanetary drive and went back where it belonged.

SEVEN. Jaguar X-Type

2002-2008

[ برای مشاهده لینک ، لطفا با نام کاربری خود وارد شوید یا ثبت نام کنید ]
Jaguar X-Type

In the early 2000s, the class of entry-level luxury cars was growing. Most were sporty and started at $30,000 or less. Wanting in, Jaguar came out with the X-Type. From the get-go, critics warned that a cheap Jag would be bad for the brand and that Ford — which bought the company in 1989 — would probably cut corners and sacrifice quality. That was before they saw the product. Sharing its front-drive platform with a European Ford Mondeo, the X-Type was a too-small, not-so-sporty sedan with all-wheel drive that was hamstrung by some of the forewarned quality issues. The trap was clearly visible from miles away, and Ford walked right into it. A 2002 Jaguar X-Type can be had for up to $8,500. A 2002 Honda Civic goes for up to $9,275.

SIX. Pontiac Sunfire

1995-2005

[ برای مشاهده لینک ، لطفا با نام کاربری خود وارد شوید یا ثبت نام کنید ]
Pontiac Sunfire

[ برای مشاهده لینک ، لطفا با نام کاربری خود وارد شوید یا ثبت نام کنید ]
Chevy Cavalier

The Sunfire managed the rare feat of having a worse interior than its GM twin, the Chevy Cavalier. Cheap interior plastics run amok, a coarse four-cylinder engine and horrendous crash-test ratings sealed its fate. On the flip side, the Sunburn was probably responsible for untold thousands of rental-car upgrades: "Honey, remember Fort Lauderdale last summer? Trust me, we want the Grand Am."

FIVE. Cadillac Catera

1997-2001

[ برای مشاهده لینک ، لطفا با نام کاربری خود وارد شوید یا ثبت نام کنید ]

To think that Germany's Opel is now the source of many of GM's strongest new models...

In the late '90s, the Opel Omega begat a Cadillac that was sporty in theory but soft and underpowered in practice, rear-wheel-drive in design but front-wheel-drive in feel. And that's just the car. Cadillac didn't help its case with advertising that included the tagline "The Caddy That Zigs," supermodel Cindy Crawford, an animated duck, and the suggestion to "lease a Catera" with the response, "Who's Lisa Catera?" The geniuses responsible for the Catera should have been exiled, but we suspect they went on to develop something called the Pontiac Aztek. Upgrades and deep discounts in 2001 couldn't save the Catera; it went to the duck blind in the sky in 2002.

FOUR. Toyota Echo

2000-2005

[ برای مشاهده لینک ، لطفا با نام کاربری خود وارد شوید یا ثبت نام کنید ]

The Echo subcompact's high seating position and center-mounted instrument panel were two well-intentioned features that were summarily rejected by consumers (though they would find their proponents in later years and other models). Call the Echo ahead of its time if you must; mainly it just wasn't a very good car. In taking over for the Tercel — a boring but popular choice against offerings from Suzuki, Geo and pre- renaissance Kia and Hyundai — the Echo proved that sometimes bland is better than bold. The problem wasn't that the youth-targeted Echo appealed more to older buyers than to younger ones, it was that there weren't enough of either

THREE. Jeep Compass

2007-present

[ برای مشاهده لینک ، لطفا با نام کاربری خود وارد شوید یا ثبت نام کنید ]
Dodge Caliber

We could have easily chosen the Dodge Caliber for this list — a compact hatchback with unremarkable gas mileage, refinement and crash-test scores — but the hapless Compass edged it out. Why? Besides the fact that you shouldn't spread lackluster product around to more than one division (the Compass is related to the Caliber), it doesn't belong in the Jeep lineup, a brand known and respected for its off-road ability. The Compass is a soft-roading poseur, and not a good one at that.

TWO. Chrysler Sebring

1995-present

[ برای مشاهده لینک ، لطفا با نام کاربری خود وارد شوید یا ثبت نام کنید ]

The previous-generation Sebring wasn't a bad car in its day, but Chrysler dropped the ball with the redesigned 2007 model. With a weak base powertrain, uncomfortable front seats, poor interior quality and haphazard styling, it never had a chance in the highly competitive midsize-sedan segment.

ONE. Smart ForTwo

2008-present

[ برای مشاهده لینک ، لطفا با نام کاربری خود وارد شوید یا ثبت نام کنید ]

mini Cooper

We don't have a problem with small cars in general (we're big fans of the Mini Cooper), just with ones that don't deliver on the benefits of going small. The pint-sized ForTwo sacrifices a lot of passenger space for a relatively unimpressive 41 mpg on the highway, has an SUV-like propensity to roll over, and is equipped with an aggravating sequential manual transmission. Sure, the ForTwo looks cute, but after you drive it you won't be smiling anymore.

You thought those Baltimorons who lifted Cal Ripken's No. 8 statue were going to remain your favorite dumb baseball thief story of the year?

Heh, not even close.

Not to be outdone at badly planned crimes that make the rest of us laugh, a Phillies fan has been charged with stealing three 2008 World Series rings from a Citizens Bank Park office during Thursday's Game 2 loss to the Rockies

According to Philadelphia police, 22-year-old Matthew Mervine attended the game dressed as a masked "Rockies Killer" — the Philadelphia Inquirer actually took a picture of him — and was ejected by security officials during the game for acting too rowdy.

But instead of heading home, Mervine allegedly stole three World Series rings — valued at about $1,100 apiece — from a ballpark office. Police say they know this because a security camera caught him in the act shortly after he filled out a job application to work at the park.

Also filed as evidence? The job application Mervine left behind, complete with all of his contact information. Whoops!

Police say they later recovered the rings — which were made for team employees and cost substantially less than the $11K versions given to players — at Mervine's home. There's no word on whether he was still wearing the "Rockies Killer" mask when arrested (though I have a strong suspicion and hope that he was).

Reuters – The People magazine cover featuring a photo of Jaycee Dugard, the California kidnapping survivor. REUTERS/People …

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – A month after Jaycee Dugard resurfaced and her alleged captors were arrested in her 1991 abduction, a spokeswoman for California's inspector general says the office will investigate the state's parole system "so that nothing like this happens again."
Phillip Garrido, who has been charged with kidnapping Dugard outside her South Lake Tahoe home when she was 11, was monitored by five or six parole agents during the 10 years he was under California's control as a convicted rapist, said Laura Hill, spokeswoman for Inspector General David Shaw. He previously was under federal parole supervision for eight years.
Authorities say Garrido hid Dugard the whole time in his backyard, where she stayed in a squalid encampment of tents and sheds at the Antioch home.
"We all are shaking our heads, saying the same thing: 'How did this happen?'" Hill said.
The inspector general is reviewing whether lapses in the state's parole system allowed the situation to go undetected, Hill said Tuesday, and a report will be completed within 30 days.
"We're not so much focused about what one parole officer did wrong, but what went wrong," Hill said. "So if there are changes to be made at the system level, the department knows what they are."
Dugard was reunited with her family last month. Garrido and his wife, Nancy, who also has been charged, have pleaded not guilty.
Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation spokesman Oscar Hidalgo welcomed the external investigation, but said the department is conducting its own review.
"We're always going to look to see if there's any problems, even if we believe we're 100 percent right," Hidalgo said. "It would not be prudent of us not to follow up and make sure all of the processes were followed."
Hidalgo said it appears parole agents made the proper visits to Garrido's home for years without discovering the victim and her children, who were allegedly fathered by Garrido, were hidden behind a second backyard fence. He credited Garrido's current parole agent with uncovering Dugard's identity after Garrido's behavior with his two daughters caught the attention of University of California, Berkeley campus police.
"We're looking at what the agent did very well, and what the agent did very well was he arrested this guy," Hidalgo said. "He followed up on his instincts. He attacked quite aggressively once his suspicions were aroused."
The department has denied public records requests by The Associated Press and other media for Garrido's full parole file, citing government codes and regulations and confidential information within the file.
Hidalgo said the department plans to release more parole information, however, in cooperation with prosecutors.
"We're balancing the criminal prosecution ... with what the public appetite is for this to be shared," he said

AFP/FBI-HO – This undated photo obtained in August 2009 from the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) …

This morning People magazine revealed its new cover featuring a photograph of a beaming Jaycee Dugard. The image of the 29-year-old Dugard is the first to be released to the public since she was was freed after spending the past 18 years in captivity and reunited with her family. A quote from Dugard accompanies the cover photo that says simply, "I'm so happy to be back with my family

From People

Friends and family members close to Dugard, who was not directly interviewed for the 10-page article in the issue hitting newsstands nationwide Friday, spoke to People magazine about her abduction, the years she spent imprisoned inside of a hidden encampment of tents and sheds, and the struggles she and her children, Angel, 15, and Starlet, 11, are having as they adjust to a normal life.
Erika Shulte, a Dugard family spokesperson, told Ann Curry of the "Today Show" that despite all they've been through, the Dugards are "very close and comfortable and happy." She added, "If you didn't know the circumstances, it would just seem like any other family." Shulte said that a therapist is using horseback riding as a way of helping Dugard and her daughters (both of whom were fathered by Dugard's captor, Phillip Garrido), assimilate into modern society.
Whether or not People paid for the cover photo, which was taken by a private photographer, is unknown. In an interview with the "Today Show"'s Matt Lauer, People's managing editor, Larry Hackett, would only say "We have bought photographs in the past ... I don't want to go into the details." Hackett added that Dugard and her mother, 50-year-old Terry Probyn, decided to grant the magazine permission to publish the photo as part of an effort to control the story of Dugard's abduction and release, a story that has garnered intense interest from the media and the general public.

Garrido kidnapped Dugard when she was waiting to catch the school bus near her family's home in South Lake Tahoe, California, on June 10, 1991, when she was just 11 years old. Dugard and her daughters were freed on August 26th of this year after an employee of University of California at Berkeley expressed concern for their safety to a campus police after Garrido and the children visited her office to inquire about holding a Christian event on the school's campus. The campus police then ran a background check on Garrido, became alarmed upon learning that he was on parole for rape and contacted his parole officer, who immediately called Garrido in for a meeting. Later in the day, Phillip Garrido and his wife Nancy showed up for the meeting with his parole officer with Dugard and her children, whose true identities were discovered by authorities after being separated from the Garridos. Jaycee Dugard and her children were reunited with her family the next day, while Phillip and Nancy Garrido were taken into custody and remain in jail on charges of kidnapping and various other crimes. Additionally, Phillip Garrido is being investigated for his possible involvement in a string of unsolved murders in the area

Marijuana plants: just let them go

In a further example of how some people haven't quite grasped what it is the police do, a woman called the cops to report the fact that her marijuana plants had been stolen.

According to police the 54-year-old woman from Brant Township in Michigan called authorities after two men broke into her home, and demanded her crop of marijuana.
According to Detective Sgt. Randy F. Pfau, the woman claimed the two men fled after taking the plants

Officers responding to her call promptly arrested her on charges of manufacturing and delivering marijuana. She claimed the crop was for personal use, but did not have a medical marijuana card required under Michigan's recently-passed laws on personal use of the drug.
Pfau said that this is the first case he can remember where someone complained to police about their drugs being stolen. 'They're just not reporting this,' he told the Saginaw News. 'She was pretty upset.'
The woman is likely to face charges, depending on tests to verify if the plants were in fact marijuana. Authorities are still hunting the two men who stole the plants

Scarred for life: Matt Bowen shows off his injuries to Alan Fletcher, aka Dr Karl Kennedy

.A young diver yesterday told how he fought for his life after being attacked by a bull shark

Matt Bowen repeatedly kicked out to try to free himself after the 3m (10ft) predator sank its teeth into his calf.
He first thought it was his diving buddy playing a prank until he turned round to see his leg in the shark's jaws and the sea around him turning red

'When I felt a tug on my leg, I initially thought it was her,' said the 23-year-old Briton. 'It wasn't really painful but it suddenly got a lot more vigorous and violent. I started kicking it as hard as I could to free my leg.
'My buddy pulled me away, kicking the shark at the same time. Instead of a calf, all I could see was a hunk of shredded tissue and blood.'
Mr Bowen, who worked as a gas engineer in Warrington, Cheshire, before setting off to travel the world, was diving a ship wreck off the western Australian coast when he was attacked.
His dive buddy, Alex McFadyen, was not injured in the attack.
Mr Bowen had two weeks in hospital in Perth and a further six weeks of physio before he was able to walk properly.
'I waited until I was a bit better before I phoned my mum,' he added. 'There was a lot of screaming, of course, and she wanted me to come home

Viki Lowing loves her crocodile more than her husband

.There were nothing but crocodile tears for Vicki Lowing when she chose Johnie over her husband, Greg

When Greg issued his 52-year-old wife with an ultimatum, it's me or him, she opted for the younger one in her life: Johnie - her 13-year-old pet crocodile

.'Husbands can look after themselves but my crocodile can't make meals,' she said
Johnie was just a baby when it was left on the doorstep of her home in Victoria, Australia, in 1996 and she treated the croc like a son
Ironically, since her husband left her in 2005, she has discovered Johnie is a girl

How to Train the Aging Brain

[ برای مشاهده لینک ، لطفا با نام کاربری خود وارد شوید یا ثبت نام کنید ]

NY times: I LOVE reading history, and the shelves in my living room are lined with fat, fact-filled books. There’s “The Hemingses of Monticello,” about the family of Thomas Jefferson’s slave mistress; there’s “House of Cards,” about the fall of Bear Stearns; there’s “Titan,” about John D. Rockefeller Sr.

The problem is, as much as I’ve enjoyed these books, I don’t really remember reading any of them. Certainly I know the main points. But didn’t I, after underlining all those interesting parts, retain anything else?

It’s maddening and, sorry to say, not all that unusual for a brain at middle age: I don’t just forget whole books, but movies I just saw, breakfasts I just ate, and the names, oh, the names are awful. Who are you?

Brains in middle age, which, with increased life spans, now stretches from the 40s to late 60s, also get more easily distracted. Start boiling water for pasta, go answer the doorbell and — whoosh — all thoughts of boiling water disappear. Indeed, aging brains, even in the middle years, fall into what’s called the default mode, during which the mind wanders off and begin daydreaming.

Given all this, the question arises, can an old brain learn, and then remember what it learns? Put another way, is this a brain that should be in school?

As it happens, yes. While it’s tempting to focus on the flaws in older brains, that inducement overlooks how capable they’ve become. Over the past several years, scientists have looked deeper into how brains age and confirmed that they continue to develop through and beyond middle age.

Many longheld views, including the one that 40 percent of brain cells are lost, have been overturned. What is stuffed into your head may not have vanished but has simply been squirreled away in the folds of your neurons.

One explanation for how this occurs comes from Deborah M. Burke, a professor of psychology at Pomona College in California. Dr. Burke has done research on “tots,” those tip-of-the-tongue times when you know something but can’t quite call it to mind. Dr. Burke’s research shows that such incidents increase in part because neural connections, which receive, process and transmit information, can weaken with disuse or age.

But she also finds that if you are primed with sounds that are close to those you’re trying to remember — say someone talks about cherry pits as you try to recall Brad Pitt’s name — suddenly the lost name will pop into mind. The similarity in sounds can jump-start a limp brain connection. (It also sometimes works to silently run through the alphabet until landing on the first letter of the wayward word.)

This association often happens automatically, and goes unnoticed. Not long ago I started reading “The Prize,” a history of the oil business. When I got to the part about Rockefeller’s early days as an oil refinery owner, I realized, hey, I already know this from having read “Titan.” The material was still in my head; it just needed a little prodding to emerge.

Recently, researchers have found even more positive news. The brain, as it traverses middle age, gets better at recognizing the central idea, the big picture. If kept in good shape, the brain can continue to build pathways that help its owner recognize patterns and, as a consequence, see significance and even solutions much faster than a young person can.

The trick is finding ways to keep brain connections in good condition and to grow more of them.

“The brain is plastic and continues to change, not in getting bigger but allowing for greater complexity and deeper understanding,” says Kathleen Taylor, a professor at St. Mary’s College of California, who has studied ways to teach adults effectively. “As adults we may not always learn quite as fast, but we are set up for this next developmental step.”

Educators say that, for adults, one way to nudge neurons in the right direction is to challenge the very assumptions they have worked so hard to accumulate while young. With a brain already full of well-connected pathways, adult learners should “jiggle their synapses a bit” by confronting thoughts that are contrary to their own, says Dr. Taylor, who is 66.

Teaching new facts should not be the focus of adult education, she says. Instead, continued brain development and a richer form of learning may require that you “bump up against people and ideas” that are different. In a history class, that might mean reading multiple viewpoints, and then prying open brain networks by reflecting on how what was learned has changed your view of the world.

“There’s a place for information,” Dr. Taylor says. “We need to know stuff. But we need to move beyond that and challenge our perception of the world. If you always hang around with those you agree with and read things that agree with what you already know, you’re not going to wrestle with your established brain connections.”

Such stretching is exactly what scientists say best keeps a brain in tune: get out of the comfort zone to push and nourish your brain. Do anything from learning a foreign language to taking a different route to work.

“As adults we have these well-trodden paths in our synapses,” Dr. Taylor says. “We have to crack the cognitive egg and scramble it up. And if you learn something this way, when you think of it again you’ll have an overlay of complexity you didn’t have before — and help your brain keep developing as well.”

Jack Mezirow, a professor emeritus at Columbia Teachers College, has proposed that adults learn best if presented with what he calls a “disorienting dilemma,” or something that “helps you critically reflect on the assumptions you’ve acquired.”

Dr. Mezirow developed this concept 30 years ago after he studied women who had gone back to school. The women took this bold step only after having many conversations that helped them “challenge their own ingrained perceptions of that time when women could not do what men could do.”

Such new discovery, Dr. Mezirow says, is the “essential thing in adult learning.”

“As adults we have all those brain pathways built up, and we need to look at our insights critically,” he says. “This is the best way for adults to learn. And if we do it, we can remain sharp.”

And so I wonder, was my cognitive egg scrambled by reading that book on Thomas Jefferson? Did I, by exploring the flaws in a man I admire, create a suitably disorienting dilemma? Have I, as a result, shaken up and fed a brain cell or two?

And perhaps it doesn’t matter that I can’t, at times, recall the given name of the slave with whom Jefferson had all those children. After all, I can Google a simple name.

Sally.

Study: Working Moms Healthier than Stay-At-Home Moms

[ برای مشاهده لینک ، لطفا با نام کاربری خود وارد شوید یا ثبت نام کنید ]

New research from University of Akron Assistant Sociology Professor Adrianne Frech finds that moms who work full time are healthier at age 40 than stay-at-home moms, moms who work part time, or moms who have some work history, but are repeatedly unemployed

Frech and co-author Sarah Damaske of Pennsylvania State University examined longitudinal data from 2,540 women who became mothers between 1978 and 1995. Accounting for pre-pregnancy employment, race/ethnicity, cognitive ability, single motherhood, prior health conditions and age at first birth, the research reveals that the choices women make early in their professional careers can affect their health later in life. Women who return full time to the workforce shortly after having children report better mental and physical health, i.e. greater mobility, more energy, less depression, etc. at age 40

Work is good for your health, both mentally and physically," said Frech. "It gives women a sense of purpose, self-efficacy, control and autonomy. They have a place where "

" they are an expert on something, and they're paid a wage

Rather than fueling the "Mommy Wars" debate, which pits stay-at-home moms against working moms, Frech believes that a recently identified group -- she calls this group "persistently unemployed" -- deserves further attention, as they appear to be the least healthy at age 40. These women are in and out of the workforce, often not by choice, and experience the highs and lows of finding rewarding work only to lose it and start the cycle again

Struggling to hold onto a job or being in constant job search mode wears on their health, especially mentally, but also physically," said Frech"

According to Frech, working full time has myriad benefits, while part-time work offers lower pay, poor chances of promotion, less job security and fewer benefits. Mothers who stay at home may face financial dependence and greater social isolation. Persistent unemployment is a health risk for women, as stress from work instability can cause physical health problems

"Women with interrupted employment face more job-related barriers than other women, or cumulative disadvantages over time," said Frech. "If women can make good choices before their first pregnancy, they likely will be better off health-wise later

"Examples of good choices could be delaying your first birth until you're married and done with your education, or not waiting a long time before returning to the workforce

Frech said there is hope for young women. She advises young women to get an education and build a work history before having a first child

Don't let critical life transitions like marriage and parenthood mean that you invest any less in your education and work aspirations, because women are the ones who end up"
making more trade-offs for family" Frech said. "Work makes you healthier. You will have the opportunity to save a nest egg. Also, should a divorce happen, it is harder to
"enter the workforce if you don't have a solid work history. Don't give up on work and education

From a societal perspective, Frech said that offering childcare and transportation resources to single mothers could result in better employment options for that population

Britain Announces Further Troop Drawdown in Iraq

By Sonja Pace
London
08/October/2007

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has announced a further drawdown of British troops from Iraq - leaving a total of 2,500 troops in southern Iraq by next spring. VOA's Sonja Pace has details of the announcement in this report from London

Addressing lawmakers in the House of Commons, Mr. Brown praised Britain's success in training 30,000 Iraqi military troops and police officers. He said their ability to take control of security in southern Iraq make further British troop withdrawals possible
"We plan from next spring to reduce force numbers in southern Iraq to a figure of 2,500," he said
Mr. Brown said all troop withdrawals remain contingent upon security conditions in the area
At the height of the U.S.-led invasion, Britain had 45,000 troops in Iraq. British forces were responsible for the southern sector of the country and by early last month their troop numbers had been reduced to 5,500. That number is scheduled to come down to 4,500 by the end of the year
Mr. Brown also stressed that as troop numbers dwindle, the task of the remaining forces will shift increasingly to a training and mentoring role for Iraqi forces
The prime minister also announced help for Iraqi civilians who have worked for the British in Iraq and who now want to relocate elsewhere due to safety concerns
"Existing staff who have been employed by us for more than 12 months and have completed their work will be able to apply for a package of financial payments to aid resettlement in Iraq or elsewhere in the region or, in agreed circumstances, for admission to the United Kingdom," he said
Mr. Brown said such relocation assistance would also be made available to some former Iraqi professional staff, including interpreters and translators
Despite a lot of political bickering in the House, Mr. Brown's troop-withdrawal plans were generally welcomed even by the opposition
But just as Mr. Brown was due to arrive to address the House of Commons, thousands of anti-war protesters marched toward the Parliament, briefly disrupting traffic and making their voices heard

Men's role in helping women with Alzheimer's, dementia soars

[ برای مشاهده لینک ، لطفا با نام کاربری خود وارد شوید یا ثبت نام کنید ]

John Becklenberg says his wife, Mary Ann, still cooks their dinner, although her favorite recipes are simplified to one or two steps

She also hasn't relinquished tidying up the kitchen of their Dyer, Ind., home, but there's more clattering of pots and pans than ever before

She was diagnosed six years ago with Alzheimer's disease, a brain-wasting illness that eventually robs people of their memories and personalities, and interferes with the simplest of tasks. John says his wife is in the early stages. Rather than taking charge, he and Mary Ann, both 68 and sweethearts for 42 years, discuss what she can do and how he can help

Every morning, they have "coffee and calendar" time, when he "reviews" with her what their day will involve. More recently, he has had to go over the daily schedule several times a day. Her "you never told me that" is followed with his "let's review," he says — but it's rather easy "when she's so pretty," he says

,Women are still more likely to be caregivers, but the number of men caring for loved ones with Alzheimer's or dementia has soared from 19% to 40% in the past 15 years
(according to the Alzheimer's Association. Among people over age 65 with the disease, about two-thirds are women (3.4 million), one-third men (1.8 million

John Becklenberg says it's "sad" and "lonely on some levels" to be the caregiver — he prefers to call himself a companion. "Males try to fix stuff," he says. "We get out in front of ourselves a little bit too much. But by doing this instead, I ease her anxiety. I think it's helped her in the long run. It's also helped us both keep our integrity, and
".that's important in a relationship

Alzheimer's disease is fatal. The government announced a plan in May to find a cure by 2025 and to find ways to support caregivers. Alzheimer's caregivers frequently report experiencing high levels of stress compared with those helping loved ones with other chronic diseases

One of the problems with Alzheimer's is it can go on for such a long time," says Beth Kallmyer, spokeswoman for the Alzheimer's Association. "While everyone deals with it"
".in their own way, male caregivers can sometimes find it harder to ask for help than women

Becklenberg says he feels fortunate his wife does not need help yet with many personal things: "She takes care of her own bathing and dresses herself. She likes to leave
"the house looking great

As long as a wife with Alzheimer's can manage those "activities of daily living," the partner's stress is lower, says Gail Hunt, president of the National Alliance for Caregiving

"Can you imagine the stress on a spouse who has to take care of feeding, toileting, bathing or showering someone who has a fear of the water, which happens to people later in the disease? Incontinence can also become a big issue. That's often when someone says they can't do it any longer," Hunt says

Kallmyer says some men learn to do new things — cook meals, take care of cleaning the house — and find assistance in other areas

One man called and said he knew nothing about helping his wife put on her pantyhose, and she wasn't happy with how he was doing it," she says. "We coached him"
",through it. But often we tell people to get help and delegate things they're not good at doing

John Becklenberg admits some tasks require more patience. His wife likes to garden but also to oversee her investments, for instance, and "that's a dance," he says

"He also does all the chauffeuring, adding that his wife decided on her own to give up driving. "I think this is easier for women to do than men

Mary Ann Becklenberg is a little defensive about and frightened of the future. "She's more confused in trying to figure out what day it is, month it is, even season," her husband says.
"Her whole sense of where she is is very seriously affected. I try to anticipate some of that"

"Sometimes she tells him, "I'm really having a hard day." Then he will sit beside her "and mentally and physically give her a hug. After 42 years, we've had a lot of hugs

"He is bracing for the future: "We know there's a cloud on the horizon

The progression of the disease is "insidious," Hunt says. "Unlike other illnesses, like cancer, with Alzheimer's in the later stages, the family member doesn't know who you
"are , And that's really devastating to families

The National Alliance for Caregiving and other groups have been trying to be sure that family caregiver support stays in the government's Alzheimer's plan

"I never expected we'd be going through this in our 60s — maybe our 80s, but not at this time of our lives, John Becklenberg says. "We balanced each other pretty well
"and we've survived, but it's not a marriage of equals anymore. She'll admit that now
