IWP League Champion 2008: Martin Ginnelly (River Plate)

Welcome to this week’s Interfering With Play. As always, this column offers views and opinions about the world of gaming, football and unsurprisingly, football gaming! The past week has seen some top football matches take place, including an excellent Arsenal result against Bolton, Manchester City look tantalising against an out of sorts Portsmouth and another off colour Manchester United performance playing top opposition. It has also seen ‘new screenshots’ of PES 2009 come to light, only to be removed again as they were in breach of journalistic NPA. So expect to see these ‘new’ screenshots rear their head again at the end of the week. Also, it does seem that Arsenal and Chelsea are not going to be licensed in this version of PES. But with a decent edit mode and a dedicated group of worldwide editors, this isn’t as bigger issue as 12 months ago.

“Oh, Its Getting Hot In Here”

My first point this week regards styles of play on PES. “Team Vision” was introduced to allow a ‘unique” gaming experience in each match. At times, this seems to work, but more often than not, if a tactic is working for you, just keep on hitting that same plan. Eventually the AI may adapt and man mark a player or make a tactical change, but usually it will be too late to have any influence on the game. Pro Evolution Soccer has been seen by many as the realistic footballing experience for along time now, but they are definitely missing a trick here. A prime example would be Stoke City’s performances since coming up to the Premier League. If they had played a standard 4-4-2 passing game, they would more than likely be rock bottom with very little in the way of a points tally. But they have a tactic that they do as well as anyone in the world, and that is attack set pieces, in particular the long throw in. The same could be said for Bolton Wanderers, who use target man Kevin Davis as a way of holding up the ball and creating chances out of nothing.

My point is, when you’re playing on PES, no matter who the opposition is, there is very little in the way of variation between the ways in which the sides play. Sometimes, as the home side, the AI will tend to commit more players forward, or bring defenders up for set pieces even if not assigned to, but usually, they will always try and work the ball into the front players and get shots away. Very rarely does the AI use the long ball into the box from deep, or even bring 7 or 8 players into an attack a la Arsenal or Chelsea. Its wrong to assume all sides play football the same way, because they don’t, and introducing some kind of tactical set up would aid this cause.

I am fully aware you can select a number of pre-designated tactics (full back overlap, offside trap etc.) and also the attacking mentality of individual players and the team, but I feel this alone is not enough. Perhaps the simplest way to implement it would be give one of 20 presets tactical set ups, and have each club assigned a set up. I am aware FIFA 09 has tried something like this, and it will be interesting to see if it comes off in the final product, especially when playing with lower league/weaker sides. For example, Bolton and Stoke would employ a long ball set up, which would see CB tend to play the ball longer, and attacking players look for set pieces in order to get the bigger players up from the back. Teams like Manchester City and Arsenal would employ a keep ball system, where the AI will get the players to keep the ball in and around the penalty area trying to work an opening. And so on, with various tactics befitting various teams, and the ability for both the AI and human gamers to change these tactics to suit the flow of the game. One nil up with 5 to go at Old Trafford, employ a ‘Blockade’ tactic, with 10 players behind the ball and make you increasingly difficult to break down. Following this, and providing it works, these could then become customisable to suit your own side, and make the most of different strengths sides have. I am tired of playing Portsmouth and having them try and pass the ball into Crouch’s feet. This is next generation, the games should know better! The other end of the scale of course, is that with gaming going online, different players may not want to only play one way, and therefore having this new tactical approach to what the AI does on your own team would make for a much more diverse football game. Your views would be very much appreciated on this.

    “Celebrate Good Times, Come On!”

Before I carry on this point, can I just point out I don’t support Manchester City at all. I say this because I know people may feel I a being biased, but I do try and speak about a number of different clubs throughout the season. In fact, it was around this time last year I was singing Sven’s praises, and only a few months ago I was disgusted with the way the Swede had been treated at City. My point I would like to make regards taking my hat off to the manager that is Mark Hughes. I have always been quietly impressed with him since his days as Wales’s manager, and I thought he turned an average Blackburn squad in a decent and hard working footballing side. Long gone are the title dreams at Rovers, but he did a good job of consolidating a Premier League place, and making them an established name in the top division. Since going to City, he has had a number of different briefs. You get the feeling that upon arriving he was promised the world, but due to the owners business indiscretions, the picture changed fast. The money began to dry up and he had realised the promises probably weren’t going to come. With Jo being the only big money summer signing, there was a feeling that mid table was going to be City’s destination for another 12 months.

However, with the sudden influx of money and power comes the chance for City to really become something big, and they have kept Hughes at the helm. It would have been very easy for this group to bring in a new boss with top class credentials, but they have stuck by the Welshman, which is a testament to both him, and the business group taking over at City. I still believe that offloading managers so early in the season is unfair, and a huge gamble to take. In some cases (West Ham) it may look to work, and in other (Newcastle last year) it certainly does not. If Mark fails to reach the targets set my the board, I am pretty sure he will be shown the door, but the fact they are giving him the chance is good news for all managers, that a takeover doesn’t always mean losing your job!

“So Dirty, I Gotta Clean My Act Up”

The next point is something that I feel would be a great addition to future football titles, although it may be open to debate. Last year saw PES introduce the diving and shirt pulling features on the next gen version of the game. These are both illegal actions in the game of football, and therefore was met by criticism that they shouldn’t be included based on not being ‘in the spirit’ of the game. My point of view was always that we want a realistic football experience and that good or bad, they should be included to make the game that little more believable. As I mentioned earlier, having variable game styles. Chances are you will get booked if you dive, so its risk vs. reward, especially if the dive is successful and you win a penalty. I would be very surprised if FIFA includes any of these features any time soon. One of the problems with having the FIFA license is that FIFA must be happy lending their name to the game, and features that are blatantly disregarding the rules are a taboo subject for most governing bodies. Yes, the EA Sports title has included diving in the past, but those days were long ago!

My subject is where do we draw the line. There are three further features that are exceptionally common in modern day football. Watch any Match Of The Day or football highlight show, and chances are you will see all three of these take place in one form or another. Firstly, kicking the ball away. A yellow card offence 90% of the time, but also a great way of wasting time, and especially if your under pressure, a good way of getting players back into position. Also, quite easy to implement, as when the whistle blows the clock would simply keep on running, and you would remain in control of your player. If you commit a foul, or are given offside, it is up to you whether you leave the ball, or run up and smash it. This would stop a quick free kick being taken, and would immediately bring all your players back into position, but usually at the cost of a yellow card. If you had already pressed the command before the free kick was given, there is a chance you may be wrongly booked, but over the course of a season, it may be a beneficial feature to have, especially when playing against mates! The second feature is a rash or ‘dangerous tackle’. I personally hate this aspect of football, and in an ideal world wouldn’t want it in a football game. But I live by my views, and the two-footed lunge is an exceptionally common part of the English game, so should be included in a football simulation. Again, very easy to bring in, simply when performing a slide tackle, you could hold a couple of the shoulder buttons down to have your player jump into a tackle. Occasionally, this would be a fair challenge, and it would be possible to win the ball this way. It would also be a good way of making up distance to intercept a ball, and could be a clean challenge. However, more often than hot, especially in a block tackle format, the player would tackle high, and catch the opponent at shin height, resulting in a straight red card. This tackle would also have a greater percentage chance of causing injury to an opponent. For example, a regular slide tackle may have a one in ten chance of having a player stay down injured, whereas the dangerous tackle would increase it to a one in five chance. With players like Mikel and Essien seemingly making a great deal of tackles in this way, it is naïve to think it doesn’t happen, and should be included in a game.

The third and final point would be the ability to argue with the referee or other players following a decision. At the moment, PES has a couple of generic cut scenes in this manor, but nothing that really brings anything to the table. It’s so common in football now, that perhaps you should be able to press a couple of buttons (e.g. shoulder / face button combo) and the players would either start pushing amongst themselves or even surrounding the ref (depending on the button pressed). I am not suggesting that we have an NHL style brawl with an actual fight between two players, but perhaps the initiation of a cut scene every once in a while, would be a good way of blowing off steam. Constant arguing could result in a yellow card, or constant trouble between two players may result in a scuffle and both being sent off, especially if for a bad tackle. I appreciate there are a number of variables that would need to be taken into account, but as I keep on saying, this is the next generation. I am fully aware that some people would hate to see this on PES, but I wonder the views of the PESGaming.com public. Would you like to see these extra, naughty additions into PES, as although against the rules, they are a common part of football? Or do you feel that football games should only be realistic about the actual football, and ignore the extras or negatives that go along with it? Your views are very much appreciated, as always.

“Keep My Hands Off The Cookie Jar”

For those of you who care or are interested, FIFA 09 is released next Friday. Following the extensive advert in the Chelsea v Man United game, the PR machine for EA is definitely up and running, and my question is, will you be tempted to pick up the FIFA game with PES only 2 weeks away? I personally stand by my views of not being impressed with the demo, and will probably pick up FIFA 09 in the new year as a multiplayer / online alternative. As I have said openly, I own every FIFA since 93 (International Soccer), and this is one of the few times I have looked at the whole gaming package and been a little under whelmed. Of course, FIFA fans will be picking it up regardless, and there are those who have money to burn, and will buy it for a two weeks fling, but for those who gaming is an expensive pastime, has FIFA 09 done enough to gain your hard earned cash?

“Have A Drumstick And Your Brain Stops Ticking”

One week gone, a couple to go, and we have about 50 votes for the Interfering With Play Player Of The Season Award. Here is your opportunity to vote for three of your favourite players from PES 2008. Simply choose the players that have performed well for you over the last 12 months on PES2008, and either comment or e-mail me with their names. Last years winner, Cristiano Ronaldo, will no doubt be there or there abouts at the end of the season, but a couple of other front runners are having exceptionally good showings so far. Let your voice be heard, and show your respect for the players that have done it for you on PES2008.
