Due to a recent update for Windows 64-bit systems it is possible that BitDefender detects several Windows and BitDefender files as infected with Trojan.FakeAlert.5. Following this event, in some instances BitDefender and/or Windows did not work properly anymore (PC failed to boot or certain applications did not function due to the fact that the files have been moved to Quarantine).
We have created a patch that
will restore BitDefender and the quarantined files.
If BitDefender is not affected perform an update (right click on the BitDefender system tray icon and choose "Update Now" - or check

- The patch will not leave any files in Quarantine after running.
- The 2009 and 2010 patches have been implemented via Automatic Update of your
BitDefender (if Bitdefender is running properly).

B. If you can access Windows, BitDefender is not able to update or step A failed use the standalone patch:
- Download the

- Run the patch
- Reboot your PC
- Perform a BitDefender update (right click on the BitDefender system tray icon and choose "Update Now")
B.1. In case the patch restored the files but BitDefender is still not functioning properly:
- Make sure all your files have been restored (test your applications and check if there are any Trojan.FakeAlert.5 items left in Quarantine -
Settings > Switch UI to Expert Mode > Antivirus > Quarantine)
- Repair your BitDefender installation (
Start > Programs > BitDefender 2010 > Repair or Remove) or reinstall BitDefender (remove the current BitDefender with the uninstall tool, restart the computer and install - guides available for

- Restart your computer
- During boot when you see the hardware being listed tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with the boot options
- Using the arrow keys select "Safe Mode" and hit [ENTER]
C.1. If you cannot log into Windows in either Normal or Safe Mode you will have to use the BitDefender Rescue CD:
- Follow the instructions in
