The people’s Republic of China has produced- and, to its shame, censored- many fascinating films about life during the Cultural Revolution. None, though, has the explosive vitality of this coming-of-age romp, directed by first timer Jiang Wen (China’s most volcanic star actor) and written by rebel novelist Wang Shuo. A teenager named Monkey grows up row on the mean streets of Beijing; when not annoying the Red Guards with his mischief, he soars into dreamland with a beautiful girl. As emotionally roiling and visually orgasmic as a Martin Scorsese melodrama, Jiang’s film is a glorious act of political and artistic defiance. It was, of course, suppressed for a year in China.
