    Gaza rocket hits southern Israel

A rocket fired from the Gaza Strip has hit southern Israel, exploding near the city of Ashkelon, the Israeli military has said.

No casualties were reported from the rocket, which landed in a field.

It is one of several rocket attacks from the territory since Israel and Hamas, which controls Gaza, declared ceasefires on 18 January.

The ceasefires ended Israel's three-week offensive in Gaza, which was aimed at stopping rocket attacks on Israel.

The ceasefires, independently declared by each side, have been violated several times.

An Israeli soldier was killed in a bomb attack on the Gaza border on Tuesday. Israel responded with air raids and a brief ground incursion by soldiers and tanks.

    US envoy

About 1,300 Palestinians and 10 Israeli soldiers were killed in the three weeks of Gaza fighting. Three Israeli citizens died in rocket attacks.

Israel wants the rocket attacks to end and wants to prevent militants in Gaza from being able to rearm.

Hamas wants the border crossings into Gaza to be fully opened to end a 18-month blockade of Gaza which has wrecked its economy.

US President Barack Obama has sent his Middle East envoy George Mitchell to the region to "vigorously" pursue Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.

He has arrived in Jordan after talks with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. He has no plans to meet leaders of Hamas, which Israel, the US and the European Union consider a terrorist group.

The Egyptians have been leading efforts to broker a permanent ceasefire by holding separate talks with officials from Israel and Hamas.

پيش فرض Kenya petrol tanker explosion kills 100

Kenya petrol tanker explosion kills 100

More than 100 people were killed and several dozen wounded when an overturned petrol tanker exploded in Kenya early Sunday, authorities said.

The blast is the second multi-fatality incident in the east African country in four days. A supermarket fire in Nairobi on Wednesday killed at least 27 people, with another 57 still missing.

The tanker explosion occurred near Molo, a small town in the Rift Valley Province -- about 130 kilometers (80 miles) from the capital, a spokesman for the Kenyan police said.

The tanker overturned along a highway spilling gallons of gas which hundreds of residents rushed to scoop up, said Titus Mung'ou of the Kenyan Red Cross.

"People were lining up trying to get the fuel," he said. "They were siphoning off petrol for over an hour. Some people had drilled holes in the tanker and were charging a fee for the assembled crowd."

The vehicle exploded about an hour later, apparently after one of the residents lit a cigarette or started a fire at the crash site, Mung'ou said.

Four policemen, who were trying to control the crowd, were believed to be among the victims, Mung'ou said.

Another 117 people were wounded in the blast, police said. The figures are expected to rise, officials said.

The Red Cross sent more than 80 people to help with rescue efforts. Those who were seriously wounded were flown to a hospital in Nairobi.

Meanwhile, the death toll from last week's Nairobi supermarket fire rose to 27 on Sunday, the Red Cross said.

Rescue workers found the latest victims as they searched through the rubble of the scorched structure in downtown Nairobi.

The fire ignited Wednesday afternoon during a somewhat busy hour in the 24-hour Nakumatt supermarket.

Police launched a criminal investigation to look into allegations that security guards locked people into the burning building. Employees of the supermarket refused to comment on the allegations.

The fire angered Kenyans for what they perceived as a lack of disaster preparedness.

Emergency numbers failed to work and water ran out during attempts to put out the fire, said Mung'ou of the Kenyan Red Cross.

"There is the need to strengthen the capacity in handling fires," Mung'ou said.

پيش فرض Romania shred women's 2012 dream

    Romania shred women's 2012 dream

Great Britain's women have almost certainly lost their chance of playing in the 2012 Olympics after they lost 71-66 to Romania in Targoviste.

GB came agonisingly close to grabbing the win, but defeat relegates Mark Clark's team back to Division B.
Their only hope now would be for the game's governing body, Fiba, to offer a free place in 2012 or in the additional pre-Olympic qualifying tournament.
Kim Butler and Rose Mason, with 22 and 16 points, again led GB's brave effort.
But with GB falling behind early, Clark's team always struggled to overhaul the Romanians.
Romania were led by Simina Mandache, who hit 16 points, and Svetlana Dragusin and Monika Boriga, both of whom netted 13, with the eastern European side's victory saving Finland from relegation.

Clark's team were always playing catch-up after Romania hit them with a 15-2 first-quarter run to lead 19-6.
Although the introduction of Kristy Lavin closed the deficit to 26-17 at the end of the first quarter, the hosts leapt out again to a 15-point lead in the second quarter.
Trailing 42-33 at half-time, GB closed to within four points midway through the third quarter when a pair of free throws from Butler and a Mason basket made the score 47-43.
GB began the fourth quarter with a three-pointer from Sarah Naylor reducing the arrears to seven points.
In the last five minutes, baskets from Stef Collins, McKay and Butler reduced the deficit to 64-61 with just over two minutes remaining.
Mandache and Collins traded threes before Dragusin's basket with 51 seconds remaining gave Romania a five-point cushion.
Butler kept the pressure on with a two 15 seconds from the end, but Paula Ciocan's pair of free throws with nine seconds left on the clock extinguished GB's chances of a shock win.
"Once again we showed tremendous heart to get ourselves back into the game," said Clark. "We were in with a chance of winning right down until the last two plays of the game.
"Romania started well, they shot very well in the first quarter which meant that we were always chasing them."
He admitted significant damage had been done in Tuesday's defeat by Finland in Worcester.
"The bottom line is that we need to prove ourselves again," he said. "It's a testament to the players who have committed themselves this January that we came this close.
"I'm proud of the time and effort all 14 girls have given to this programme and to this team."

پيش فرض !Five recycling mysteries solved

    By Lori Bongiorno

Wondering what to do with your stash of old batteries or the cans of unneeded paint taking up space in your garage? You know you shouldn't throw them out, but it really is time to get rid of them.

Resist the temptation to toss them in the trash anyway. The reason: They (and everything on the list below) contain toxic chemicals capable of contaminating the environment if not disposed of properly

Unlike items that are picked up at the curb, you'll have to make a special effort to unload these ones responsibly. But, with a little advance planning and some good info, you'll see that it's really quite simple to dispose of these seemingly mysterious items.

    :Here's how

    Batteries

Recycling rechargeable batteries is fairly easy. Home Depot, Staples, Radio Shack, Best Buy, and other retailers take them back free of charge. There are fewer options for single-use batteries, but look for bins at your local Whole Foods Market, Ikea, or library. Otherwise, your best bet is the local household hazardous waste drop-off site. Where is it and what are your closest drop-off options? Search here for answers

    CFLs

These energy-efficient bulbs are becoming easier to get rid of. Just drop old bulbs off at any Home Depot or Ikea for free recycling. Or ask about CFL recycling at your local Ace Hardware or home improvement store. You can search for other nearby solutions

    Electronics

Every retailer that takes back rechargeable batteries also accepts mobile phones, as do most wireless providers. For computers, cameras, televisions, and others it's worthwhile do a little homework because some stores charge fees depending on item and brand. Check out Best Buy, Staples, and Office Depot to see what's the best fit. Some places, like Radio Shack, have trade-in programs where you can receive store credit for your old gadgets

    Motor Oil

In case you need some motivation, consider this factoid from Earth911: Every gallon of used motor oil that's improperly disposed of can contaminate one million gallons of drinking water. Bring it to Wal-Mart, Autozone, Jiffy Lube, or search online for more convenient choices

    Paint

It's among the harder items in this group to dispose of, but it's worth it and totally doable. If the paint is still in good shape, consider donating it. As of now, there aren't any retailers that accept used paint so you'll need to make a special trip. Search comprehensive list of options
