Player Ratings: Middlesbrough 2-2 Manchester United
MIDDLESBROUGH
Mark Schwarzer: 7 – Had little chance with either goal but did well with everything else that was thrown at him in tricky conditions.
Luke Young: 5.5 - Good block on Rooney in first half and coped well against Ronaldo and Giggs. Booked for crunching challenge on Evra, and struggled in the final 30 minutes.
David Wheater: 7 - Another solid performance by the young man with the growing reputation.
Emanuel Pogatetz: 7 - Defensively sound and had a great opportunity to put the home side ahead at the start of the second half.
Andrew Taylor: 5.5 - Lucky to get away with a handball at the end of the first half and struggled at times against Rooney. Not the most consistent of displays.
George Boateng: 6.5 - Lost Ronaldo for the goal, but became a greater influence as Boro took control of the first half. Booked for foul on Evra.
Gary O’Neil: 7.0 - Got into some promising crossing positions and put some great balls in for Alves, great through ball to Aliadiere for first goal.
Julio Arca: 7 – A tidy performance.
Jeremie Aliadiere: 8 - Missed a glorious chance to equalise in the first half. Two nice touches to put Alves through for his goals and combined well with the big Brazilian throughout.
Alfonso Alves: 9 - A Ronaldo-esque free kick in the first half was swiftly followed by two fine goals, both finished expertly. An impressive performance by the Brazilian who was eventually replaced by Tuncay to a standing ovation by the home crowd.
Stewart Downing: 7.5 - Had the pace to beat Wes Brown but inconsistent with his crossing. Had chances to score himself but couldn’t beat Van der Sar.
Substitutions:
Tuncay 6.5 – Replaced Alves with ten minutes to go and almost scored in the dying seconds.
MANCHESTER UNITED
Edwin Van der Sar: 8 – A strong performance from the Dutchman. Had no chance with either goal but made a string of fine saves from Alves and Downing to keep United in the game.
Wes Brown: 6 - Not his best game for United, perhaps the news that Gary Neville is finally nearing fitness has upset him. Beaten by Aliadiere in the air for flick on for second goal and frequently lost his man at set pieces.
Rio Ferdinand: 6.5 - Had a difficult afternoon up against the impressive Alves. Couldn’t catch the Brazilian for the second goal and limped off after 70 minutes which will worry Alex Ferguson especially with Vidic out injured and Roma the visitors in midweek.
John O’Shea: 4 - In for the injured Vidic but a poor performance from the Irishman. Looked shaky all afternoon, was frequently caught out of position. Made some poor clearances too.
Patrice Evra: 6.5 - A bruising afternoon for the Frenchman, who has the victim of a number of tough challenges. Should have got closer to O’Neil at times but did prove an attacking force on the left hand side.
Cristiano Ronaldo: 7.5 - Another game, another goal for the Portuguese. Involved in all the best parts of United’s play, his pace a constant threat to the Boro defence.
Paul Scholes: 6.5 – A tidy performance from the midfielder, his passing as always was immaculate and he rarely gave the ball away.
Michael Carrick: 7.5 – One of United’s better performers. He set up Ronaldo nicely for opener and provided some incisive passes. Influence waned in the second half.
Ryan Giggs: 4.5 - More evidence that he is a declining force in the United side, his passing was not up to scratch and he frequently gave the ball away.
Wayne Rooney: 7.5 - Booked for late challenge on Schwarzer and was having a frustrating afternoon until he popped up to equalise for the Red Devils. Never stopped trying and could have won it with only minutes to go but header saved by Schwarzer.
Carlos Tevez: 5 - Busy and determined at times but did little and was replaced by Park just after the hour mark.
Substitutions:
Ji-Sung Park: 7.5 - Replaced Tevez and immediately added energy to the United attack. Perhaps more importantly, set up the equaliser for Rooney.
Owen Hargreaves 7 – Replaced John O’Shea and operated as right. Helped United look a more solid unit at the back.
Gerard Pique: 7 - Replaced injured Rio Ferdinand and along with Hargreaves and helped firm up a defence that had looked shaky at times in the second half. Some good substititions from Sir Alex helped turn the tide in the second half.
