4 Jeff Monson charged with mischief; ESPN not an accomplice

    By Maggie Hendricks

.Jeff Monson is either really dumb or really smart. I'm leaning towards the latter
The fighter, who last appeared in the Mixed Fighting Alliance, winning over Ricco Rodriguez in December, has a warrant against him for defacing the Capitol building in Olympia, Wash. This warrant was issued after pictures of him painting an anarchist symbol on the building appeared in ESPN the Magazine.
See, Monson is an outspoken anarchist. He has said many times that he wants to do away with the social hierarchies that govern our world. The best way for Monson to share these theories is through the mass media, so publicity is his friend.
Is Monson so dumb that he would expect ESPN to not use photographs of him committing a crime? Of course not. This is a man with a Master's degree in psychology. He understands the ramifications of civil disobedience. If he didn't want attention brought to his cause, he would have asked ESPN to photograph him sitting at home, enjoying dinner.
Monson was charged with first-degree malicious mischief, a crime that carries a maximum penalty of a $20,000 fine and 10 years in prison. ESPN did not do him a favor by running that picture, but it's not their job to protect athletes. It's their job to cover them, a fact which Monson has used to make sure that everyone is discussing his cause today

5 HOT OR NOT? Cameron Diaz vs Renee Zellweger

By JESSICA SATHERLEY - Thursday, January 15, 2009

Metro has carefully chosen the best and worst dressed celebs this week to find out who has hit the fashion jack-pot and who has missed

    HOT
Does Cameron Diaz ever age? The stunning actress looks just as hot as she did 10 years ago in this bubblegum pink dress at the Golden Globes, keeping her style young and fresh.

Cameron Diaz looks picture perfect in this bubblegum pink gown at the Golden Globe Awards

While the main theme on the red carpet this week was gold, Diaz broke away from the crowd in the bright pink taffeta Chanel Haute Couture dress, accessorizing with a Chanel clutch and a whopping big diamond Chanel Camilia ring.
The 36-year-old showed off her toned arms with the off the shoulder look and her two toned hair reinforced her Californian surfer repertoire

Cam was a breath of fresh air among the bland majority at the Globes, making her our hottest pick of the week.
    NOT
Renee Zellweger looked like she was auditioning for a role as the new Morticia Addams rather than walking the red carpet at the Golden Globe Awards this week.

Renee Zellweger looks more like Morticia Addams than a diva on the red carpet

It might have been a Corolina Herrera gown but the nude coloured bra under the sheer blouse; teamed up with the fishtail skirt were cringe worthy.
The dress that Renee picked from Herrera's Pre-Fall 2009 collection might have suited a more olive complexion but the Bridget Jones actress's porcelain skin was only emphasized against the harsh tone.
The petite star is completely drowned by the monstrosity and we suggest that next time she leaves the gothic look to The Addams Family

پيش فرض Whip up vegetarian meals with an edge

By LISA SCOTT - Tuesday, January 13, 2009

Chop Chop: Lisa Scott gets busy in the kitchen under the watchful eye of Yotam Ottolenghi

Yotam Ottolenghi has a dinner party tonight. The Israeli chef and owner of award-winning Islington deli Ottolenghi is cooking for eight friends

On arrival, I marvel at his majestic dining table, already cluttered with colourful trays of delicious-looking veggie food.
'Colour is important when it comes to food. People eat with their eyes,' says Ottolenghi, who together with Palestinian business partner Sami Tamimi, serves up Middle Eastern, Mediterranean and North African flavours.
'Vegetables are so versatile,' he says. 'You can do so many things to enhance their flavour and appearance.'
Vegetables are why I'm here. I haven't eaten meat in years but I'm not pushy about my beliefs.
My problem is inspiration – I cook the same few meals repeatedly. I'm not alone.
There is a growing number of part-time veggies, called flexitarians, who find eating a varied diet so difficult they tuck into the occasional meat dish.
I hope Ottolenghi, famous for his sumptuous vegetables, can teach me to be more adventurous. He gets me to roast some carrots and butternut squash.
'When roasting vegetables, put them on the highest heat for 20 minutes,' he says. 'Always blanch carrots for three minutes in boiling water first as they take longer to cook than butternut squash and pumpkin.'
Among the plates is a pile of roasted aubergine wedges. Ottolenghi, who studied philosophy before following his partner to London and embarking on a Cordon Bleu cooking course, nods towards them: 'Aubergine is my favourite vegetable because it is so versatile.'
I confess that I hate aubergine as it always tastes soggy. Ottolenghi looks mortified. 'How can you say that? I will change that for you.'
Under his instruction I start the tahini and oregano sauce for his beloved aubergines.
As I blend red chillies, chopped oregano, coriander, lemon juice, garlic and olive oil, I ask Ottolenghi about the typical mistakes veggies make.
'I hate substitute meat,' he says. 'People think they need to replace the meat flavour in their meals. They should stop trying to simulate flavour. You can do so much without meat.'
What should I invest in to avoid bean-burger temptation? 'Couscous, lentils, rice, quinoa barley,' he suggests. 'Make a big grain salad in half an hour.
Boil wild rice, quinoa and lentils together and leave to cool. Then add coriander, mint and thyme, finely chopped garlic, olive oil and lemon juice.
Add some sun-blushed tomatoes. It's a very simple meal.'
Our vegetables are now roasted so Ottolenghi pours a thick red paste of harissa, lemon, cumin, coriander and paprika over the steaming chunks of carrot and butternut squash. After they have cooled, we roll them in chopped coriander and parsley.
I am impressed; in just half an hour, the humble carrot has been transformed to the dazzling main attraction.
So what of the aubergine? I sit at the chef's dining table and he watches me as I hesitantly eat his aubergine with tahini and oregano sauce.
He smiles knowingly as I admit it is delicious and full of fresh, zingy flavour. But did I really expect anything less?

    Try these recipes at home
Marinated aubergine with tahini and oregano
Preheat oven to 220ºC. Trim the stalk end off three small aubergines and cut each into ten similarly sized pieces.
Place the pieces on a large roasting tray. Brush all sides with plenty of olive oil and season with salt and pepper.
Place the tray in the hot oven and bake for 15-18min until golden brown and soft inside.
Put one mild red chilli seeded and chopped, 2tbsp finely chopped coriander, 2tbsp finely chopped oregano, one crushed garlic clove, 3tbsp lemon juice, 4tbsp olive oil, 1tsp coarse sea salt and ¼tsp ground black pepper into a bowl and mix well for a marinade.
Take the aubergines from the oven and spoon the marinade on top. Leave at room temperature for two hours before serving.
To serve, spoon green tahini sauce on top.
Grilled mackerel with green olive, celery and raisin salsa
Stir together the following for the salsa: 125g celery stalks, thinly sliced, 60g stoned green olives, 3tbsp capers, rinsed, 70g raisins, 1½tbsp sherry vinegar, 4tbsp olive oil, 3tbsp honey and 15g flat leaf parsley, roughly chopped. It should be sweet to the taste. Leave to sit for at least 15min.
Set an oven grill to the highest setting and toss eight mackerel fillets gently with olive oil and some salt and pepper.
Lay the fillets on a flat tray skin side up and place under grill for 3-4min or until cooked. Serve the fish hot or at room temperature with a spoonful of salsa.
    Both recipes are from Yotam's Ottolenghi cookbook. He will also be conducting hands-on cookery classes on February 21, March 14, May 9 and June 6 at Leiths Cookery School;

6 Meet the penguin who's afraid of water

    Thursday, January 22, 2009

Come on in, the water’s lovely: Kentucky ponders whether to take the plunge while his friends flap around in their pool at Chester Zoo

His friends are more than happy to splash about in their icy pools – but for Kentucky the penguin, water holds a real chill.

.The runt steadfastly refuses to take the plunge, causing his keepers no end of woe
They've tried forcing Kentucky in to keep his feathers clean – but have resorted to pouring water on him

'It's a bit too cold for him in the water, so he spends all his time on the rocks just walking around,' said Kentucky's keeper, Adam Stevenson.
'It's a bit of a pain having to go over to feed him because he won't go in the water but he's a real character and everyone at the zoo loves him.'
The Humboldt penguin was born small and has always had moulting problems – but he has won the hearts of those at Chester Zoo in Cheshire.
'I expected to see all the penguins flapping about in the water but there was one who wasn't having any of it,' said visitor Stacey Commons.
'He just sat there looking a bit lonely on his rock. He's really cute but I felt sorry for him. It's like a monkey who's scared of climbing trees

    Associated Press

MORE: RivalsHigh100 Hoops Rankings | Top 150 prospects for 2009

DALLAS -- A Texas high school girls basketball team on the winning end of a 100-0 game has a case of blowout remorse.
Now officials from The Covenant School say they are trying to do the right thing by seeking a forfeit and apologizing for the margin of victory.

.Samantha Peloza grabs a rebound in practice a week after their 100-0 win

"It is shameful and an embarrassment that this happened," Kyle Queal, the head of the school, said in a statement, adding the forfeit was requested because "a victory without honor is a great loss."
The private Christian school defeated Dallas Academy last week. Covenant was up 59-0 at halftime.
A parent who attended the game told The Associated Press that Covenant continued to make 3-pointers -- even in the fourth quarter. She praised the Covenant players but said spectators and an assistant coach were cheering wildly as their team edged closer to 100 points.
"I think the bad judgment was in the full-court press and the 3-point shots," said Renee Peloza, whose daughter plays for Dallas Academy. "At some point, they should have backed off."
Dallas Academy coach Jeremy Civello told The Dallas Morning News that the game turned into a "layup drill," with the opposing team's guards waiting to steal the ball and drive to the basket. Covenant scored 12 points in the fourth quarter and "finally eased up when they got to 100 with about four minutes left," he said.
Dallas Academy has eight girls on its varsity team and about 20 girls in its high school. It is winless over the last four seasons. The academy boasts of its small class sizes and specializes in teaching students struggling with "learning differences," such as short attention spans or dyslexia.
There is no mercy rule in girls basketball that shortens the game or permits the clock to continue running when scores become lopsided. There is, however, "a golden rule" that should have applied in this contest, said Edd Burleson, the director of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools. Both schools are members of this association, which oversees private school athletics in Texas.
"On a personal note, I told the coach of the losing team how much I admire their girls for continuing to compete against all odds," Burleson said. "They showed much more character than the coach that allowed that score to get out of hand. It's up to the coach to control the outcome."
In the statement on the Covenant Web site, Queal said the game "does not reflect a Christ-like and honorable approach to competition. We humbly apologize for our actions and seek the forgiveness of Dallas Academy, TAPPS and our community."
Covenant coach Micah Grimes did not immediately respond to a message left by The Associated Press on Thursday.
Queal said school officials met with Dallas Academy officials to apologize and praised "each member of the Dallas Academy Varsity Girls Basketball team for their strength, composure and fortitude in a game in which they clearly emerged the winner."
Civello said he appreciated the gesture and has accepted the apology "with no ill feelings."
At a shootaround Thursday, several Dallas Academy players said they were frustrated during the game but felt it was a learning opportunity. They also said they are excited about some of the attention they are receiving from the loss, including an invitation from Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban to see an NBA game from his suite.
"Even if you are losing, you might as well keep playing," said Shelby Hyatt, a freshman on the team. "Keep trying, and it's going to be OK."
Peloza said the coach and other parents praised the Dallas Academy girls afterward for limiting Covenant to 12 points in the fourth quarter. She added that neither her daughter nor her teammates seemed to dwell on the loss. "Somewhere during that game they got caught up in the moment," Peloza said of the Covenant players, fans and coaches. "Our girls just moved on. That's the happy part of the story

5 Goat arrested for Mazda robbery

    Friday, January 23, 2009

A goat arrested? No kidding - it's the nanny state gone mad

. Police in Nigeria are holding a goat on suspicion of the attempted armed robbery of a Mazda 323
Vigilantes took the animal to the police, claiming it was a criminal who had used black magic to transform himself into a goat to escape arrest after trying to steal the car.
Police have detained the goat in custody while they ponder what to do next

Kwara state police spokesman Tunde Mohammed said: "The group of vigilante men came to report that while they were on patrol they saw some hoodlums attempting to rob a car.

"They pursued them. However, one of them escaped while the other turned into a goat.
"We cannot confirm the story, but the goat is in our custody. We cannot base our information on something mystical.
"It is something that has to be proved scientifically, that a human being turned into a goat."
Belief in witchcraft is widespread in parts of Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation.
Curious locals have rushed to the police station to see the goat, photographed in one national newspaper on its knees next to a pile of straw

پيش فرض Ring of fire: Indian Ocean to see solar eclipse

PARIS (AFP) – A few lucky people in the Indian Ocean will be treated to a rare event on Monday when an annular solar eclipse will transform the Sun into a dark disc with a blazing ring-shaped corona around its rim.

In solar eclipses, the Moon moves between the Sun and Earth, casting its shadow on the terrestrial surface.

In an annular eclipse, a tiny shift in distance that results from celestial mechanics means the Moon does not completely cover the Sun's face, as it does in a total eclipse.

Instead, for those directly under the alignment, the Moon covers most of the Sun's surface, and a ring-like crown of solar light blazes from the edge of the disk.

For those watching from the fringe of the track, the Sun is partially obscured, as if a bite has been taken out of it.

According to veteran NASA eclipse-watcher Fred Espenak, the total eclipse track will run from west to east on Monday from 0606 GMT to 0952 GMT.

It will traverse the Indian Ocean and western Indonesia before petering out just short of Mindanao, the Philippines.

The partial eclipse will be seen in a much wider swathe, including the southern third of Africa, Madagascar, Australia, Southeast India, Southeast Asia and Indonesia.

It will be the only annular solar eclipse this year. The last was on 7 February, 2007, and after Monday, the next one will be on 15 January, 2010.

The big event for eclipse junkies this year is on July 22, when a total solar eclipse will be visible from India and China, the world's two most populous countries.

    __________________________________________________ ____

uring the year 2009, two solar and four lunar eclipses occur as follows
