You’ve probably heard about the so-called antennagate problems with the iPhone 4… Sadly, I’ve also been experiencing it with the new X8.
The problem occurs when you hold the phone firmly in your hand and cover both sides with your hand and fingers. The signal will drop immediately and after a few seconds you’ll notice the signal bars going down, eventually all the way down to zero bars. It’s easy to replicate, especially if you run a speed test with the Speedtest.net application. The test will immediately stop if you cover the phone with your hand and fingers. That’s despite having great signal strength on other phones, like the X10 or X10 mini.
Another weird thing is that the download speeds on the X8 are much slower than what I’ve been used to. I’ve been used to speeds up to around 6 megabits per second over 3G with my X10 at home, and the X8 is struggling to reach just a single megabit per second. WTF?!
I have never experienced any similar products with my phones from Sony Ericsson, so it’s a unique case for me. Have any of you heard of such a severe case with a Sony Ericsson phone? It’s normal for the signal to drop a bit if you cover the phone, but not like this. It’s practically impossible to hold it in a way that doesn’t affect the signal.
Maybe I’ve got an X8 with a bad cell radio or maybe that’s just how it is with all X8′s. If you’ve got an X8, please join in on the discussion.
