    6 Take a Bird's Eye View of female film-makers

by RUTH ALLAN - Thursday, October 9, 2008

    Tingel Tangel

Only seven per cent of film directors are women. It's a shockingly low statistic by anyone's standards but particularly those of Rachel Millward. The former charity worker was so horrified by the lack of female input on the big screen that she set up the female-only film festival, Birds Eye View, in 2005.
Practically the opposite of DIY girl-focused events such as Ladyfest, this celebration of female talent is professionalism incarnate. A sleek logo and famous speakers typify the event, which takes place in the London area each March. It's about time, then, that those of us based in the north-west got our piece of the birdy pie, too. A roadshow version of the festival is coming to the Cornerhouse tomorrow with highlights including a screening of Kathryn Ferguson's charming Tingal Tangel

    10 She's one picky model

    Monday, October 13, 2008

... It's a big pick – and we're not talking about the size of the photograph
Spanish model and actress Inés Sastre is caught picking – in fact almost splitting – her nose while lunching with a friend in Paris. Table manners weren't on the menu, it seems

9 Artist's work belongs in the skip

    Monday, October 13, 2008

Urban life belongs in the skip

Many a piece of contemporary art has been deemed fit only for the skip. But one artist's collection made it there before it even went on show.
Oliver Bishop-Young has created several instant escapes from the rigours of city life – in rubbish skips.
He has turned the beaten up yellow containers into a skateboard park, swimming pool, living room and even a table tennis arena.
And for those urban dwellers who yearn for some outside space of their own, there is a kerbside mini-park complete with park bench.
'Skips are such a great way to use materials. It's the way it affords one some space in urban London where you can't find these areas,' the 22-year-old said

Mr Bishop-Young designed his 'skip art' as playgrounds for youngsters. But he also hopes the works will help encourage people to share their useful rubbish – such as old furniture and clothes – with friends and neighbours.
'It's something an individual can do to make their impact on the city,' he said.

    Skip turned half pipe

And the skip scenes, which the artist is providing to events in 'need a bit of an injection', are certainly turning a few heads.
'People have been really positive about them. But they do a bit of a double-take when they walk past,' Mr Bishop-Young said. Especially builders, we presume

2 Toxic waste and litter threaten sea life

    Monday, October 13, 2008

Rubbish having a wave effect on water life

Over-fishing, pollution from toxic waste and plastic litter have put sea life around Britain on the brink of an ecological disaster.
Without action, rising numbers of our ocean species will become extinct and ecosystems will fail, conservationists warned.
Just eight of the 47 fish stocks in our seas are in a healthy state, previously unpublished data shows

Some species are now critically endangered, including the now inappropriately named common sturgeon and common skate, as well as the angel shark and leatherback turtle.
Another major problem is pollution from toxic chemicals, sewage discharges, oil, radioactive waste and urban and agricultural run-off.
Plastic litter has become a major pollutant for the seas, and can entangle or be ingested by marine animals, said The Silent Seas report from the Marine Conservation Society.
'Too many fish are taken from the sea, too much rubbish is thrown into the sea and too little is done to protect precious marine life and habitats,' said Dr Simon Brockington, the society's head of conservation.
Ecosystems are close to a state where they support only life lower down the food chain such as jellyfish and plankton, he said

9 Parents' anger at 'pro-Islam' doll

    Monday, October 13, 2008

A Little Mommy Cuddle 'n Coo doll

Concerned parents have accused a Fisher Price doll of preaching pro-Islamic messages to toddlers.
The Little Mommy Cuddle 'n Coo dolls, available in the UK from £19.99, have been reported as saying: "Islam is the light."
The talking doll initially caused controversy in the USA and some retailers even removed the product from their shelves, Fox News reported

But Mattel, the parent company of Fisher Price, dismissed the controversy as a phenomenon caused by the doll's cheap inbuilt speakers.
A spokesman said: "The Little Mommy Cuddle 'n Coo dolls feature realistic baby sounds including cooing, giggling, and baby babble with no real sentence structure.
"The only scripted word the doll says is 'mama'. There is a sound that may resemble something close to the word 'night', 'right', or 'light'.
"Because the original soundtrack is compressed into a file that can be played through an inexpensive toy speaker, actual sounds may be imprecise or distorted

9 London under attack in apocalyptic future

    Monday, October 13, 2008

The giant spider and bunk beds inside the turbine hall

It's a vision of the future - but it's nothing to look forward to.
A new exhibition at Tate Modern in London imagines the capital under attack in the year 2058.
The gallery is displaying rows of bunk beds symbolising an apocalyptic vision.

Visitors check out the bunk beds

TH.2058 is the ninth of the gallery's Turbine Hall commissions and has been created by French artist Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster.
It follows previous headline-grabbing successes in this space such as the giant subterranean crack which stretched the length of the floor of Tate Modern and a series of giant slides.
Gonzalez-Foerster's work is set 50 years from now and is inspired by both real and fictional scenarios of London under attack "whether by flooding, bombing or invasion".
She has imagined the city's population taking shelter in the Turbine Hall from never-ending rain.
Piercing lights are said to suggest some kind of unseen surveillance and the installation is also comprised of gargantuan animal sculptures, such as a 65ft (20m) high flamingo by the artist
Alexander Calder which has mutated in size. The giant spider sculpture by Louise Bourgeios - the artist who launched the Turbine Hall series in 2000 - has also grown in size by 25%.
The main part of the installation is 200 yellow and blue bunk bed frames with books such as JG Ballard's The Drowned World and Mike Davis' Dead Cities based on top of them.
A giant screen overlooks the work, playing extracts from sci-fi and experimental films

9 Man goes for Stephen Hawking leg tattoo

    Monday, October 13, 2008

    Hawking etched on leg

It's certainly a bit different from having 'mum', 'dad' or a loved one's name etched into your skin.
An admirer has had a particularly lively image of Prof Stephen Hawking tattooed on his leg as a tribute to the theoretical physicist and his achievements.
Fan Jack Newton said: 'He has worked on some ground-breaking scientific research and is an amazing example of how illness does not necessarily stop a man from doing great things. He's an inspiration to us all

The trainee artist came up with the idea after reading the Cambridge professor's best-seller, A Brief History Of Time.
'To be honest, I didn't understand a word but I respect the man,' said the 23-year-old from Brighton.
Suitably resolved, he made space and time to have the wheelchair-bound physicist's likeness inked on to his right calf.
He then added a line from Monty Python's Life Of Brian – 'He's not the Messiah. He's a very naughty boy' – possibly in a bid to lighten up the otherwise highly cerebral image.
The entire effort, at Angelic Hall tattoo studio, took artist Stewart Francis seven hours.
But it was time well spent. The depiction of the 66-year-old scientist has already won two trophies at tattoo conventions.
The next project is not yet clear but, given Mr Newton's fertile imagination, the thigh's the limit

The team will take the bravest visitors up a 38-degree incline and stop at the top for a fabulous view of the whole show - you may even see a pal trying on some new boots from up there.
After all the exertion, you'll find sustenance in the world food area where you can sample mountain treats such as tartiflette, rosti and tiroler, while the centrepiece of the main hall is the World Resorts Village. See exhibitors from all the major destinations (plus some lesser known ones) and specialist snow holiday firms. Between them, you'll find a new place to escape to every day of the season if you so wish.
And check out the other articles (linked above) for a preview of some of the things that will be on display at the show.

10 Britney bans booze for tour

by ANDREI HARMSWORTH - Tuesday, October 14, 2008

Fresh faced Britney commands booze ban

Britney Spears has proved that her hellraising days are behind her by placing a booze ban on her entourage ahead of her world tour.
The comeback queen is making sure she doesn't fall off the wagon by sticking to soft drinks – and is demanding that her crew do the same.
So there will be no champagne corks popping to celebrate her return to the stage when she hits the road

Spears, 26, made the decision after confiding in friends about how hard it had been to get back in shape.
But the former party girl still has one vice – coffee.
She is believed to have an insatiable craving for a caffeine hit and gets through six or seven lattes a day.
'Brit loves her coffee – but since getting back into shape this is her only vice,' said a tour insider.
'Only water and coffee passes through her lips and she looks great. She has been through a lot but she is back to the Britney that we all know and love.'
There is no date set for the start of her world tour but Spears is committed to thrilling her millions of fans again.
And the Womanizer singer has shown her ambition by reportedly signing up to AEG promotions for the concerts – the same company that Madonna uses.
The news came as 7million people watched her go nude in the video for latest single Womanizer on YouTube – proving she is still as popular with fans as she was before her divorce and child custody hell
