نظر يه گوشي باز در مورد پي 990

If your thinking of purchasing a Sony Ericsson P990 then this may help you make up your mind.

I have had many phones from the SE (Sony Ericsson) stable including the P800, P900, P910 and K800. I have also had many phones from other makers like Nokia N90, N80 and N70 and various Windows Mobile handsets like the Eten M600.

I can say without a shadow of a doubt that the P990 is the best of them all. It’s just executed so well and the UIQ interface is fantastic. I would give the usability 9 out of 10. But like every phone that is released the P990 does have a few areas for improvement.

Here are some observations that may help any prospective purchaser make up their mind:

The Jog Dial on the P800, P900 and P910 were 5D (that’s five way directional) and you could push the jog dial backwards to execute the Back command and this made single handed operation excellent. For some crazy and insane reason SE decided to replace the 5D dial with a 3D dial and put a separate button under the jog dial that executes the back command. The button is too low down and can be difficult to push. This is the only reason why the usability gets a 9 out of 10. For people who are new to the P series this will not matter but for people who have owned and are use to the 5D dial it’s a real pain.

I was not sure about the flip at the front of the P990 and spent about three days putting in on and then later deciding to take it off again. But I finally came to the conclusion it was better on as number dialing was a pain without it. I agree that the P990 looks better without the flip but functionality and usability comes tops for me.

I have a leather Sony Ericsson case for the P910 and noticed that the SE web site says it’s the same one they sell for the P990. With the flip attached I find it a snug fit but acceptable. With the flip removed a bit of strange behaviour occurs. When locking the keys using the key lock button after halfway sliding the P990 into the case the screen changes as if the Flip was attached and the key lock turned off. Weird behaviour and it would do it every time. I don’t know if the phone has a light sensor like my Blackberry so it knows when it’s in a case or if it’s the magnetic latch on the case doing something odd. I have only tested this with the Vodafone variant and when I get a chance to remove the flip will try it on the sim free one.

I noticed that in order to update the software on the phone you need to use the SE Updater software and remove the sim, plug the USB connector in while keeping the C button pressed on the flip. I could not find a way of doing this without having the flip installed. If anyone knows how to execute the “C” command without the flip please let me know.

In the debate about battery life I would say that the P990 is good for about two days of moderate usage and heavy usage about a day and a half. It is also with interest that all current SE P990 handsets come with the BST-33 battery which is a 950mAH unit and is smaller in capacity then the BST-34 battery which is a 1120mAH unit. (All the review samples were supposedly shipped with the BST-34). SE have the BST-34 battery as a “coming soon” item and I for one will be purchasing one when they are available to give me a bit more up time. You can find the BST-34 battery on Amazon.de but they won’t ship to the UK so I guess a short wait is required.

The P990 uses a different internal memory then the previous models and this does not allow for execution in place. Therefore all running programs must be copied into the available Ram in order for them to run. Many posts around the internet have said that the device only has around 18MB to 20MB of ram free and out of memory errors are frequent. I have noticed the out of memory a few times but the P990 now has a quick access Task Manager at the bottom right of the screen when the flip is open and you can end programs easily to free up memory. The only down side is that when ending programs it does not appear to free all the memory that was available up again. Hopefully SE will update the firmware over the coming months to improve the memory management.

The P990 uses the old Memory Stick Duo Pro cards and although not the smallest of mediums in comparison to the many micro formats available it has one brilliant advantage, Storage space! The first thing I did was to order a SanDisk Ultra II 4GB memory card and it works a treat. I have read reports that the P990 will also support up to 8GB Duo cards when they become available later this year.

I was using the P990 the other day and it just turned off and rebooted. This was without any prompt it just rebooted. After completing the boot a message came up that said the phone was automatically rebooted to improve performance. Thank goodness I was not in the middle of anything I had not saved. However, overall as long as your running the latest software version the phone is very stable.

I was disappointed with the fact that the camera was only 2 mega pixels and could not understand why SE did not fit a 3MP camera like the Nokia N80 and SE K800. But having owned all mentioned phones I can report that the camera on the P990 is fantastic. The pictures have very little noise in lower light and the Auto Focus works brilliantly. The Nokia N80 has a 3MP camera but does not have Auto Focus and I found the N80 took very grainy pictures unless the lighting conditions were perfect. It’s true that the number of pixels does not say how good the camera is and the P990 proves this. I prefer the images taken by the P990 then the Nokia N80. (The K800 camera is the best, especially the best pics feature and if only SE could have slotted one of those in.)

The WLAN implementation on the P990 is the best I have seen. I have a gateway that does not broadcast the SSID and uses encryption and has problems getting the Nokia N80 to connect. With the P990 I just entered my settings and it connected immediately with no fuss. I then tried the Opera web browser and this is amazing. I have never really bothered with mobile web browsing because rendering large web pages on a small screen did my head in and most don’t support frames. Well the P990 browser supports frames and does a really good job of rendering pages. It’s a pleasure to use. With the recent addition of .Mobi web sites more mobile friendly sites should be coming and this is something else to look forward to.

When I first opened the flip and saw the keyboard I thought dam the keys are on the small side. But again SE have pulled this off as well. It takes a little bit of adjustment time to get used to it and it looks great glowing blue in the dark. The P990’s keyboard in my opinion is much better than the P910’s.

Another thing that bugs me about the P990 is the fact that SE have moved the location of the stylus from the top right hand side to the top left hand side. This may be better for left handed people but I am right handed and hold the device in my left hand. I would expect the stylus to be on the top right as per the previous models (excluding the P800) and I keep subconsciously picking at the right corner to release the stylus that’s not there.

The business card scanner is a neat little gimmick that will impress your friends. SE have not only made a cracking phone but they have added a little sprinkle of fairy dust. You start the business card scanner software and take a photo of a business card. Then the fairy dust takes over and transposes the information from the business card and creates a contact in your address book. It really does work and still amazes me how well it manages to perform.

I am now on my third P990 but don’t let this put you off because it’s not all down to faulty workmanship. I got my first P990 about two weeks ago and it was Vodafone variant. The handset did not have any external Vodafone branding but did display the Vodafone logo at boot up. It was also not sim locked which surprised me. I tried sims from O2 and Three and they worked fine.

Anyway, the Vodafone web site said that I had good coverage at home but when I got it home it was awful. No signal meant the phone had to be returned.

I then found the P990 at the Car Phone Warehouse on O2 and ordered it. I was pleasantly surprised that the CPW managed to get me the handset for next day delivery and it was a sim free unit.

Now here’s the strange bit. The P990 that was sim free was noticeably faster than the Vodafone variant and both units had the latest software. I turned the Handwriting Recognition off on the Vodafone handset and this improved performance but the sim free P990 was just as fast with it on. Also the boot times were noticeably quicker on the normal P990. This brings back memories of the O2 Exec that was so slow with the O2 software running and nice and fast without it. I am not saying that the Vodafone one is to be avoided just that I noticed the sim free one was a tiny bit more responsive.

The second P990 had a charging problem and the battery would not go over 85%. I took the battery out of my K800 (both use the BST-33) and this would not charge over 85% either. I called SE support and they said to send it back for a replacement. I have not as yet had any problems with P990 number three.

All in all this is a fantastic phone and I recommend it highly. If only SE had left the 5D jog dial and put the K800 camera inside they would have the perfect phone.

    Best wishes to all

    N

Why should SONY put an 3 MP camera into the phone?
Just to be on pair with others aka N80, N73 and so on?
I also owned those phones after one bad charge of W900 (3 in a row) but happy returned to SE.
The N80 camera was even inferior to the 2 MP camera on my N90 !!!
Also the newer N73 made not so good pictures.
And to complete your post: the bad images made with your N80 has nothing to do with AF.

Looking at the P990i camera, comparing it with the ones in upper mentioned phones i can only say (and confirm) that SONY did an great job

With the rest of ur post i widely agree as a long term phones user and tester (P800;P900;P990i) .

The UK Total Mobile magazine October issue has given the P990 a score of 91%. The review is factual and objective but did not seem to mention of the memory issues

I am updating my post after living with the P990 for some weeks and would like to make the following comments:

On the flip at the top centre there is a five way button and the left, right, up and down bit work well. However, the centre button is an absolute pain to use. When turning the phone on and being presented with Normal Mode or Flight Mode, if I use the centre button I nearly always push down and centre at the same time and end up in Flight Mode. I have now started to use the jog dial on this screen and by pushing it in I can select the correct mode. It’s not as if I have sausage fingers so was wondering if anyone else has experienced this phenomenon?

In my post I commented on the fact that I have had three P990 phones, well make that four. I was more than happy with No3 and about a week after it arrived another P990 arrived in the post. I called CPW to enquire why they had sent me another phone and it turned out to be an order problem. They insisted on No3 being returned and that I kept No4 as the IMEI numbers would match the orders.

A friend of mine ordered a P990 after my recommendation and I talked him through the process of updating the software. While he was reading out the message on the screen I noticed that his phone was being updated to “Generic World Wide 1” and I was sure mine was on “Generic World Wide 2”. So after the update process had completed I got him to run it again and sure enough he was given the option to progress to number 2. It’s worth pointing this out to P990 owners that you should run the update process multiple times until your told that the software is the most current.

Another friend of mine did not believe that the camera on the P990 was better than the N80 and I embarked on a photo shootout between the devices. The results shocked him and he had to concede that the quality of the P990 camera was superior to the N80 and this appears down to the Auto Focus.

The following pictures were taken side by side seconds apart and held at the same distance and angle.

    TEST 1

Nokia N80 taken in Automatic mode.

SE P990 taken in Automatic mode.
[ برای مشاهده لینک ، با نام کاربری خود وارد شوید یا ثبت نام کنید ]

You can see the difference between the images quite clearly especially when looking at text. On the N80 picture you can just about make out NAVMAN on the case and the logo and writing on the brochure behind is poor. Also look at the grain on the side of the scanner and the grain in the top right corner. Then compare this image to the P990 and the NAVMAN text is clear the yellow pages on the phone book are more accurate and you can almost make out the writing on the brochure.

    TEST 2

These pictures were taken inside my airing cupboard and in poor lighting conditions. Both cameras used flash and again the angle and distance were as close as I could get.

Nokia N80 taken in Automatic mode.
[ برای مشاهده لینک ، با نام کاربری خود وارد شوید یا ثبت نام کنید ]

SE P990 taken in Automatic mode.
[ برای مشاهده لینک ، با نام کاربری خود وارد شوید یا ثبت نام کنید ]

The difference between these images is remarkable. The N80 is grainy and the text is unclear and the P990 has far less grain and the text nice and clear.

Well that’s my basic camera test and update done. I am still awaiting the BST-34 battery being released and the SE web site is now saying it’s due for release this month. I will probably get two of them and update the K800 at the same time. My wife uses the K800 and likes to talk so the additional battery power would go down well.

Does anyone else have any niggles with the P990 that they wish to share or direct photo comparisons with other phones?

I can understand your in trepidation about changing from the Blackberry. I also have a 8700 and it is the best pure email device on the market in my opinion. However, the Blackberry as a device lacks in so many areas and for an all round device the P990 is much better. But to answer the question posed “The keyboard on the 8700 is slightly better than that on the P990”.

It may take a little time to adjust to the smaller and slightly more tightly packed keys but everything is a trade off. Before you buy go into your nearest Vodafone store and have a play with the P990 just to make sure you can live with it, which I am sure you will, just as I have done.

Don’t forget you will get so many more benefits from the P990 like:

    Touch Screen
    Handwriting Recognition
    Bluetooth that works
    Decent Camera
    WLAN
    Removable Storage
Media Player that plays most formats
    Fantastic Web Browser

Only two and a bit months until December 

    Kind regards

Thank you LastNinja and Sleepyhead for your kind greetings they are very much appreciated.

The Magnetic latch in the flip must be how the P990 determines if the Flip is open or closed and it seems illogical to have a magnetic clasp on the official SE case that exhibits a behavioural change on the device while it’s being inserted.

I did not touch on the P990’s speaker volume in my review and feel this is something else worth considering. My Nokia N80 has a very loud speaker and when playing music or showing video clips to friends I would have the volume set to 80% as it was loud enough. But the P990’s speaker volume when playing music is a little disappointing. The ring tone and alarms are great and there is no problem here so it would seem that it is a software issue. Maybe SE will resolve this in a future firmware release.
