Hi EA,
I switched from PES to the FIFA series last year but I never really fell in love with FIFA 09, mostly because of the somewhat slow response. When the FIFA 10 demo was released I was extremely impressed by the huge improvement in response and overall tight controll. The players acted and moved exactly according to the controller input and the response in passing and shooting was more than excellent. I played the demo a lot and fell in love with the extremely tight and responsive gameplay.
When the game was released I was, sad to say, very dissapointed to realise that the perfect response and tight gameplay from the demo was exchanged for slower response and less tight gameplay.
If you play a couple of games in the demo and then switch to the retail version, I´m sure you will notice the difference I am talking about.
I don´t know if this change in response and tight gameplay is made on purpose or is an unwanted side effect of other last minute changes. However, as you understand, I think it is a shame that the response and tight gameplay from the demo was degenerated in the retail version. I loved the response and tight gameplay in the demo and if you could restore that in the retail version it would be the most perfect gameplay in a football game ever.
Is this change made on purpose by the development team or is it an unwanted side effect from other last minute changes?
Thank you.
Best regards.
EDIT: I play on Xbox 360 and the issue that I´m describing is present in both offline and online mode
I back your feelings 100% after, also feeling like this season would be "THE" game with the nice response controls. The difference is blatant and makes playing much harder than it ought to be.
I am giving up on FIFA. How difficult is it to get into PES, I have never tried it before?
If you have the patience it's definitely worth a try. However, be warned, it is absolutely no where near as "plug'n'play" (so to speak) as FIFA. Many have refered to the two as Fifa being the arcade game and PES being the simulator. Put it this way, you can rent Fifa and get the full feel of it. PES would take more time to adapt to. it's very extensive.
Basically there is a lot more to offer off the pitch than in fifa. Fifa has the gameplay, that's for sure. PES is still a bit dated.
Graphics are better on PES as well.
Here's a little vid on the games tactics. Very extensive.
I was playing kick-off with a mate,
he slide tackled his own player and got a red card.
Was no where near my players, or the ball. It was just an accidental thing.
Players don't react quick enough, I'm tired of a pass straight to my players feet stunning the player and they react late, I feel this so called 360 degree dribbling is non-existent, If the buttons are supposed to be pressure sensitive, then the harder you press the button the harder the shot/pass should be, you shouldn't have to hold the button down longer for a harder shot/pass. I don't like when my defenders chest down a ball in the box instead of clearing it when I've clearly pressed the proper button to do so. The refs get in the way of the ball entirely too often, even when the ball is moving slowly and they have plenty of time to get out of the way. I feel the demo controlled way better than the finished product does. Even though 09 was not without it's problems, I enjoyed it a lot more than I do 2010. I'm sorry EA but this game is just too buggy to be considered a finished product. Even after both patches you've released I still notice the same problems. If there's a 3rd patch on the way it needs to be a massive overhaul.
Dear EA
Firstly, allow me to congratulate you for the great game that FIFA10 is. I was a long time PES player before FIFA09 and with FIFA10, not only has the gameplay matched PES, it has surpassed it.
However, I have to express my disappointment at the absence of a little feature in FIFA10 which has caused a huge ripple effect for players across the globe. The absence of matching players from your region, like in FIFA09, is to blame.
I am disappointed about online gameplay in comparison with the offline version.
Just to better understand what i mean Please try To play 1h ranked match and then do 10 minutes training 11vs11.
IMO online gameplay loses at least 50% fluidity, and this is evident in the very poor variety of shoots on goal and 360 control that is almost absent.
Online gaming is not well balanced.
I mean that if you play a 4/4,5 team like Milan or Lazio is way too hard beat phisical teams like chelsea, man utd or barca. 'Cause you sistematically loose every contrast on the ball, and they will catch you the ball even from behind, these aspects are emphasized if you're against a black player, can't understand why.
But physical players are way too favorite against fast players.
IMO the mistake about dribbling in this game is that it's way too easy catch the ball by tapping the press button, and the error in the code of the game is that when you tap the press button the player automatically goes towards the ball.
Imo the direction of the pressing should be given by your self.
There are so many wrong things about the game. I will just name a few.
1. Over done the barge/strength thing. How on earth can Drogba get out muscled by the smallest player on the game?! Out muscle never works when you're on the ball. You just simply cannot out muscle someone when you're on the ball.
2. The goalkeepers...again...Their intelligence is awful. Same goes with defenders. What would a goalkeeper do when they see a ball on the floor and an opponents striker is coming towards it? Commit themselves. But they simply do not have the intelligence in this game. Also when you lob a goalkeeper, sometimes they just look at the ball going over them they don't even try to get it. They are too overpowered to use when a 1 on 1 appears. You cannot get past them at all, and that's where the terrible shooting comes into place.
3. Shooting. Oh my god. This is the worst bit of the game. The shooting is so off its unbelievable. Do you really think a professional getting paid almost 150 grand a week will miss a clear cut 1 on 1 chance?! Even in the box they fail to hit the target.
4. Passing is terrible once again. Why would you pass to an opponent?! It isn't realistic at all. Atleast make an attempt to pass properly?
These are probably one of the four i get irritated by. I don't have a clue why you've made stupid "improvements" to fifa 09, because that was simply brilliant. I would know what I'm talking about as I was ranked 90th in fifa 09. You really need to sort this stuff out.
I loved the demo, and the game is great/could be if only a couple of minor bugs were ironed out. The player swithching is terrible, it's the main reason I concede goals, which leads me to think the CPU does it to get an advantage, why else wouldn't they have patched it with this patch.
I also think the lack of tactics for lower league teams shows laziness on EA's behalf, what is going on with this? Why are all the sliders set to 70 or on a rare occasion 55? I heard they were going to use one of the custom tactics threads to patch it.
No brainer bug fixes:
- Fix awful goalkeeper AI. I once saw a shot pee roll towards my keeper and without moving he just watched it go through his legs.
- Fix the commentary. The amount of times I've heard the commentators say 'GOAL! and thats his second one today he really is on fire!' When i've just gone 1-0 up.
- Fix the fouling for christ sake. Yes I want the game to be a challenge but I did have a video saved (I'm not going to get it up right now, i'll do it some other time when I've actually found them) where my striker had a defender slide into his left leg whilst the ball was at his right, the tackle caused the player to stumble and lose the ball and another defender kicked it away. Any contact where the ball isn't played first should be a free kick. This wouldn't be so bad if the CPU didn't get free kicks when one of my players just stumbles over the ball after they've tackled me.
- Slow reactions for making a run. Sometimes I have to mash LB over and over to get a player to make a run otherwise they just stand there doing nothing.
- Missing for a few yards out - the amount of times the ball goes wide is ridiculous.
- Missing from just outside the box - If I drive a ball in from the top of the box standing in the 'D' I don't expect the ball to go sailing past the post almost everytime. If players have the time and space to make a strike it should at least be on target.
By way of feedback more than complaining (I must be one of the few who enjoys this game it seems)heres some things I'd love to see improved in FIFA 11.
1) Tackling Mechanism. At the moment tackling is more akin to rugby than football, I'd like to see less crazy pushes going unpunished or being accepted as tackles.
2) Goalkeeper AI and Clubs Mode Player Randomisation.
Thought I'd throw these two together, Goalkeepers still need a hell of a lot of work to get them to an acceptable standard. Frequently I find a keeper watching the ball roll past his feet across the 6 yard box or watch a cross sail over his head when he could have done something to prevent both from ending up as certain goals. I'd like to think they will be given a lot of treatment for 11 but we shall see.
On top of this player randomisation in clubs (esp goalkeepers) is crazy. 5"3 keepers? Defenders with skills at 33 against virtual pros with untold skills 80+ is just crazy. Why not set every keeper at 6"+ and keep it constant, for the non virtual pro players I'm not sure why they can't be consistently skilled at 75 or something from the off and leave that be? Just a thought anyway.
3) More ways to use my virtual pro online. At the moment the options are pro ranked and clubs. I'd like to use mine in more modes online if possible as single player modes are not half as much fun as it can be online.

4) Player switching.
I don't think theres anything to add other than it really doesn't seem logical sometimes. Any improvements to this in 11 would be greatly welcomed.
5) Referee Interaction.
Please, please keep them out of the way in 11. Their positioning is shocking. I could live with it 'occasionally' hitting the ref, but he is constantly in the way in Fifa 10 which can get annoying at times.
6) Slow the games down?
Might not be favourable, but I think if the overall speed of the game was slower the matches would be far better. Just a final one from me

Hope this helps, thanks for Fifa 10 - it IS a worthwhile improvement on 09 and I look forward to next year.

Riche

1. in online game custom tactics not available. why??
2. Scoring goals...Its unbelievable bad.....In 09 it was perfect. In 10.....OMG.....we have to hold the shoot button too long...To score from far distance a big goal is nearly impossible.....Only so many stupid goals in fifa 10. Everything else is ok, but this is killing the fun. I wish to have the fifa 10 with the 09 shooting system. That would be cool. But this one....I enjoyed fifa 08,09, but I might stop playing 10, if it wont change.......
number of problems with general gameplay in XboxLive and manager mode matches.
1) Players still attempt to touch/control balls that are going out of bounds off of the opposition. It's very unrealistic and generally frustrating as any real world player would recognize a situation where simply letting the ball go out of bounds would result in a throw-in or a goal kick or corner kick for their side.
2) Keepers often tip balls over the top of the goal that are falling literally straight down after having come off the crossbar. I've seen this happen even when there are no players around them. I think most real world keepers are smart enough to catch a ball that is falling like a rain drop and stands no chance of going into the net.
3) Keepers are unrealistically slow off of their lines. Please compare the approximate speed of any real world keeper in a one on one situation to the speed of the in-game keepers. When holding Y to make a keeper come out to get a ball, it makes very little sense for the keeper to shuffle towards the ball rather than sprint to it.
4) This is a problem that has been present in the past few years of FIFA games. I think most people that have played football can agree that you are coached to "go to the ball." Players in the game often back pedal as a pass approaches them, and this is very unrealistic in many situations. It also often leads to a player losing a ball that would have been theirs if not for the back-pedaling animation.
5) Another realism issue related to corner kicks. After the opposition has taken a corner kick, the team defending the corner kick should press out of the box. In FIFA10 the players often stand in the box and watch as the play develops. In the real world they would be moving out of the box so as to catch opposition players offside and to advance into a counterattack.
6) Realism issue again: too often players run into each other. I have seen defenders run into each other, trip, land in a pile and leave the ball to an attacker who then proceeds to score. This is something that did not happen in previous versions of the game, and it seems to happen regularly now. Also, the referees seem to get in the way far more often than happens in the real world. I would say that it happens on average at least once for every 2 games played on XboxLive, whereas in the real world referee interference is very very very rare.
7) The back four: Left backs and right backs simply stand and watch when a center back loses the ball at midfield. It's unrealistic because any real world player would be moving immediately into the defense rather than standing and watching for a split second. The angles taken to cut off the forward are also quite poorly programmed.

Referees are very inconsistent. Slide tackles on players without the ball go unnoticed but then a barely noticeable collision will result in a free kick.
9) When playing online, choosing a custom set piece resets the positioning of defenders. This is especially a problem when defending free kicks and the free kick taker keeps choosing custom set pieces in order to get a shot on goal where the defender is not positioned to clear the ball from the line.
10) Preset animations are unrealistic and frustrating. For example, a stumbling player is going to be moving a lot quicker if he stumbled as the last man as opposed to stumbling when trying to make a tackle at midfield. Situational factors should be taken into account.
I've owned every single version of FIFA since I was a child and will always play it. That said, I think that the gameplay of the current version is a huge step back from the previous one. The new features are exciting, but I think many of the new animations and features have made the game less realistic and injected a much larger degree of luck. My two center backs run into each other after making a tackle and end up in a pile. Neither one makes an effort to get up quickly, so the striker who has just been dispossessed takes control of the ball and scores. This sort of stuff happens in online gameplay far too often and its the reason why I'm already looking forward to FIFA2011
I agree 100% about the shooting.
Wow- reading the posts has made me feel better. As far as shooting and defending mechanics are concerned FIFA09 was much better.
I also just want to second something that was said in the other posts. When switching players, there is a half-second lag in between switching to a player and actually having control over him. It's annoying to concede goals because you were unable to move a player despite the fact that the cursor shows you have him selected. This half-second of lag was not an issue in FIFA09, so unless it was purposely injected into the game, I really hope you guys can fix it.
my biggest issues with the gameplay are :
1: very very very very hard to score headers! i rarely can keep them under the bar even when i just gently tap shoot. or its headed like a baby and goes very slowly wide...this even when i have a free header and have time to think about it! when i do score a header, i feel like i had absolutley no control over it...
2: the CPUs abilitie to slide tackle you from behind, not get the ball, and it be totally fine... i very rarely get a penalty as every challenge they make in the box is ALWAYS a clean one, even when its clearly not! oh but when i try it, red card! sometimes i dotn even press tackle and the they get free kicks... this annoys the lalalala out of me!!!
3: shooting accuracy is terrible from distance
The ref AI is a misrepresentation of real world football.
The refs only reward penalties on missed slide tackles. This is frustrating when great ball control or a well timed skill move results in an awkwardly late standing tackle that not only misses the ball and embarrasses the defender but sends the forwards feet flying overhead. After such an obvious penalty the refs will do nothing. When the same foul is committed out of the box an immediate free-kick is given. In real life it does not take a slide tackle to receive a penalty.
Also the "advantage" the refs play in Fifa 10 is anything but advantageous. These refusals to stop play often result in the team that was fouled losing the ball right after the yellow advantage symbol in the top corner goes away. Even though there is never any chance on goal in these situations the ref will not bring the ball back for a free kick unless you stop the ball or lose it before the symbol disappears. The game will also play the advantage when you have been fouled in your defensive third regardless of there being a possible chance for you to score. Worst of all is when these two occurrences align and it turns into a shot at goal for the team that committed a foul.
This is my first visit here, and I have to agree to most of the posts here, though being a converted PES fan I thought some of these faults weren't faults at all, but features.

The thing that irritates me the most at the moment is the extreme performance hit when stepping up to a free kick or a corner.
When playing Ajax I didn't think much of it, perhaps it didn't happen too often, but now with Arsenal it's all but impossible to get a free kick on goal. The game stutters so much that powering up the bar correctly becomes a guessing game.
In the practice area it's a smooth ride, but apparently the larger the arenas the more the game will stutter.
Since this is a PS3 game, I guess a "performance patch" might be a bit too much to hope for though...
1. Player switching is way too slow and doesn't switch to the correct player. I concede quite a bit of goals because of not being able to switch to the intended player in time.
2. Computer tackles from behind almost always gets the ball, and when I do it, it's almost impossible. Maybe it's because I am a poor tackler, but I feel that the chance of gettiing the ball from a tackle from behind should be slim and a last ditch defending technique.
3. Goal keepers are not yet up to par. Even the best goal keepers don't clean up lose balls and can't even hold on to the lightest shots. Some balls that seem to trickle to the goal, apparently are very hard to handle by the keeper.
4. This is just a gripe really, but AI defenders that go for the ball and miss have amazing recovery times. I think AI defenders should be more patient on one on one situations not just tackle everything that moves.
5. Sometimes the game speeds up really fast on one-on-one matches and it feels like the players are just skating around. I don't know if anyone else has experienced this issue or not.
6. Incorrect comments from commentators. Stating that we are down a goal when we are in fact level, etc..
All in all, thank you for creating a great game. I actually switched from PES and after playing the PS3 demo of PES, i am glad that I did.
Seriously you guys have rubbish problems like weather, kits and commentary.
There's so many bugs i can hardly play they game. Will definitely not buy fifa 11.
- A.I is awful, no diffrence between their gameplay and tactics. I would like too see example: Norwegian teams playing with long balls. And teams like Barca playing fast and quick. Also stupid A.I
- Atmosphare is not pretty good in FIFA10, more realistic fans.
- More licensed teams and stadiums, and try to get CL and EL license
- Maybe the biggest problem in the gameplay: the players have a really really bad ball control. 1 dribble and the ball is like 30 meters away from you
- More commentators, it could be awesome if like: Premier league had 2 commentators and La Liga 2 others.
- Also better tactical adjustments. The one in PES10 is really good.
- FIX the referee, seriously make 2 bad tackle and he won't be giving you any freekicks or anything else for the rest of the match. Not fair.
- Better grapichs and kits and player faces
- Fix the Be A Pro mode, its just awful
- Also the defensive part ist just stupid. Its waaaaaay to easy to get 1v1 with goalkeeper. You or the A.I can score up to 13 goals in a match, if you score on all these 1v1's
