Many CPU-based designs actually have a memory hierarchy consisting of registers, on-die SRAM caches, DRAM, paging systems, and virtual memory or swap space on a hard-drive. This entire pool of memory may be referred to as "RAM" by many developers, even though the various subsystems can have very different access times, violating the original concept behind the "random access" term in RAM. Even within a hierarchy level such as DRAM, the specific row/column/bank/rank/channel/interleave organization of the components make the access time variable, although not to the extent that rotating storage media or a tape is variable.
بسیاری از طراحی های مبتنی بر cpu ، ساختار حافظه ای دارند که تشکیل شده است از ثبات ها ، sram های درون cpu ، dram ، سیستم های صفحه بندی ، و حافظه مجازی یا swap که روی هارد دیسک فراهم می شود. با اینکه هرکدام از این قطعات و حافظه ها ، از نظر زمان دسترسی تفاوت قابل توجهی با یکدیگر دارند ، بطوریکه هدف و مفهوم اصلی "دسترسی تصادفی و بدون ترتیب" را تا حدی زیرپا می گذارند، اما همه این مجموعه از سوی تولیدکنندگان ، RAM نامیده می شود. حتی درون هریک از این حافظه ها نیز باز هم بحث تفاوت در زمان دسترسی وجود دارد ؛ مثلا در DRAM با سطرها/ ستونها / بانک ها / رده ها / کانال ها / و جایگذاری هایی روبرو هستیم که هریک دارای سازماندهی متفاوت بوده و در نتیجه زمان دسترسی آنها نیز با هم فرق دارد. البته توجه کنید که این تفاوت به اندازه زمان دسترسی حافظه های مکانیکی مثل هارد دیسک یا tape نیست ...

روزی یک سفید پوست و یک وکیل در هواپیما کنار هم نشسته بودند. وکیل پیشنهاد کرد که باهم یک بازی کنند. چنانچه وکیل از سفید پوست سوالی بپرسد و او جواب را نداند، سفید پوست باید 5 دلار به وکیل بپردازد و هر بار که سفید پوست سوالی کند که وکیل نتواند جواب دهد، وکیل به او 50 دلار بپردازد.
سپس وکیل اولین سوال را پرسید:" فاصله ی زمین تا نزدیکترین ستاره چقدر است؟ " سفید پوست بی تامل 5 دلار به وکیل پرداخت.
سپس سفید پوست از وکیل پرسید" آن چیست که با چهار پا از تپه بالا می رود و با سه پا به پایین باز می گردد؟" وکیل در این باره فکر کرد اما در انتها تسلیم شده و 50 دلار به سفید پوست پرداخت.
سپس از او پرسید که جواب چه بوده و سفی پوست بی معطلی 5 دلار به او پرداخت کرد...
blonde سفید پوست معنی می ده. اما چون با she اومده منظور یه خانم بوره!
