This is a collection of VSTi vocoders and vocoder-type effects for use in audio and music production. They will naturally require a VST or DX host application to run them (such as Cubase, etc.), since they are not standalone apps. Included are classic vocoder sounds, as well as vocoders that allow you to shape the sound uniquely. Perfect for DJ's or musicians who want to add some cool electronic sounds to their mix. NOTE: Some of the apps included, such as Antares Auto-Tune are NOT vocoders in the strict sense, however they were included because they can be used to acheive vocoder-like and robot-sounding voice effects (like Cher and Madonna).

WHAT IS A VOCODER?:
A vocoder is a sound effect that can make a human voice sound synthetic. It is often used to make people sound like a robot, with a metallic and monotonous voice.

The vocoder was invented by a Bell Labs scientist named Homer Dudley to improve telephone service in the 1940s. The vocoder breaks speech patterns into components, allowing them to be re-transmitted efficiently over a narrow bandwidth. Dudley was a pioneer in figuring out how to synthesize sounds and quickly ascertained the vocoder (or voice coder) possessed a creative potential far beyond the transmission of phone calls. In fact, the device proved to be of crucial importance World War II, scrambling transoceanic conversations between Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Winston Churchill.

MUSICAL APPLICATIONS:
In 1971, the vocoder entered the pop culture mainstream when Kubrick invited composer Wendy Carlos to score the music to his controversial adaptation of Anthony Burgess' A Clockwork Orange. Employing a vocoder to "sing" on "Timesteps," Carlos produced a classic of early electronic music.

In the years since the vocoder has leant atmospheric touches and a futuristic ambience to songs by many artists, including Laurie Anderson ("O Superman!"), Kraftwerk ("We Are the Robots"), and the Beastie Boys ("Intergalactic"). The vocoder's current popularity somehow seems fitting: Its trance-like effect has elements of human warmth but also a decidedly metallic tone. A product of the communications revolution, the vocoder has become a perfect fit for artists seeking a "new millennium" sound.

HOW A VOCODER WORKS:
To put it simply: whenever you speak, your voice consists of two component[s. The first component is your basic voice type, produced by your vocal chords. It varies in pitch but remains nearly constant in type and is quite unique, and that's why you can distinguish between persons when you hear their voices. The second component is how you modulate the basic voice. Modulation means that you dynamically amplify and attenuate frequencies. This is done by the mouth and tongue when you speak. A vocoder aims to replace the carrier of your voice with another carrier from another source. Thus, it changes the sound of the voice but not the message when you speak.

Example: Say a long "ohh". To accomplish this task, you nearly close your mouth. Next, say a long "ahh". This time, you opened your mouth. Your vocal chords produced the same sound for both, ohh and ahh but the modulation made it sound different.

The modulation signal is called formant, because it forms and shapes the basic voice, which is called carrier due to the fact that it carries the formant signal. The formant signal carries the information and has a much lower frequency than the carrier, a circumstance that can be used to reduce bandwidth consuption for telephone services (which was also the original purpose for the vocoder).

With VMware Server you can
Provision a new server in minutes without investing in more hardware by co-locating multiple virtual machines on the same physical host.
Run Windows and Linux operating systems and applications on the same physical server without fear of software conflicts, because virtual machines are completely isolated from one another and from the operating system.
Installing on a Computer with a Different VMware Product
VMware Server cannot be installed on a computer with VMware Workstation, VMware Player, VMware ACE, VMware ACE Manager, or VMware GSX Server installed. If you have one of these products installed on the computer where you plan to install VMware Server, remove the existing product, then install VMware Server. On a Windows host, use the Add/Remove Programs control panel. On a Linux host, see your product manual for the commands needed to uninstall the product.
Getting started with VMware Server is simple. The key steps are

Install the VMware Server software (including the server, VMware Server Console, VMware Virtual Machine Console, VMware Management Interface, the VmCOM API, and the VmPerl API on the server.)

Install the VMware Virtual Machine Console and VMware Scripting APIs on Windows or Linux clients.

Start the VMware Server Console and enter your serial number. You need to do this only once — either during installation or the first time you start a console after you install VMware Server.

Note: You receive the serial numbers in an email message from VMware. The message includes one serial number for use on Windows hosts and another serial number for use on Linux hosts. About the VMware Server Console on the Server

VMware Server uses the VMware Server Console to manage virtual machines on any VMware Server host directly from the host. VMware Server uses the VMware Virtual Machine Console to manage virtual machines remotely from a client workstation or another host.

Multiple consoles can connect to a virtual machine at the same time, giving multiple authorized users concurrent access to the virtual machine; similarly, multiple users can connect to the virtual machine with VMware Scripting APIs and the VMware Management Interface. You can run virtual machines in full screen mode from any console.

When you install the VMware Server software on a Windows host, the VMware Server Console is installed automatically. If you are using a Linux host, follow the instructions below to install the console. You should also install the VMware Virtual Machine Console on any client workstation from which you want to access virtual machines. This allows for remote management of virtual machines.
Installing VMware Server on a Windows Host

To install the VMware Server software on a Windows host:

Log on to your Microsoft Windows host as the Administrator user or as a user who is a member of the Windows Administrators group.

Note: On a Windows Server 2003 host, you must be logged on as a local administrator (that is, not logged on to the domain) in order to install VMware Server.

Although you must be logged on as an administrator to install VMware Server, you can run the program after it is installed as a user with normal user privileges.

Note: A message appears if you are installing VMware Server on a Windows host configured as an Active Directory server. You can safely ignore the message by clicking OK to continue the installation, or choose to cancel the installation.

Start the VMware Server master installer.

From the Start menu, choose Run, browse to the directory where you saved the downloaded installer file (the name is similar to VMware-server-installer-<xxxx>.exe, where <xxxx> is a series of numbers representing the version and build numbers).

Click on .exe

Click Open, and then click OK.

The master installer starts.

Click Next.

Accept the end user license agreement (EULA).

Select the I accept the terms in the license agreement option, then click Next.

Choose whether you want to perform a complete or a custom installation.

Complete Installation

A complete installation installs the server software, the VMware Management Interface, the VMware Server Console, the VmCOM API, and the VmPerl API on the VMware Server host. To choose the complete installation, select Complete, then click Next.

If you want to install all the VMware Server components in a directory other than the default, click Change and browse to the directory of your choice. If the directory does not exist, the installer creates it for you.

Caution: VMware Server must be installed on a local drive, not a network drive.

Note: Windows and the Microsoft Installer limit the length of a path to a folder to 255 characters for a path to a folder on a local drive and 240 characters for a path to a folder on a mapped or shared drive. If the path to the VMware Server program folder exceeds this
