    # 010 // Super Metroid
    Platform: SNES
    Developer: Intelligent Systems
    Publisher: Nintendo
    Year Released: 1994
Why it Made the Top 100 List: As 3D gaming loomed on the horizon, this strictly-2D adventure showed off the SNES hardware and provided one of the most thought-out, intriguing gameplay experiences available at the time. Super Metroid took itself seriously and offered a captivating sci-fi world. As lead heroine Samus Aran, players progressively explored more complex areas of planet Zebes by collecting suit power-ups and conquering absolutely gigantic boss figures along the way. For all its subtlety, style, and intelligent design it is still adored by fans and has gone on to spawn numerous top-rated sequels.

    # 009 // Star Wars: TIE Fighter Collector's CD-ROM
    Platform: PC
    Developer: LucasArts
    Publisher: LucasArts
    Year Released: 1995
Why it Made the Top 100 List:Larry Holland's epic space combat simulator released to stores and promptly set one hundred and seventy eight new bars by which all other games that planned to feature stars and shooting would be judged. Among other things, Tie Fighter Collector's CD-ROM featured super advanced polygonal graphics and crisp CD-quality audio highlighted by an ultra-intuitive, yet unimaginably deep network of starship, squad and fleet controls. The result was a wonderfully complex Star Wars universe with gameplay that still dominates the genre. And all this came accented by one of the coolest evil heroes in history. Believe us, Grand Admiral Thrawn is one bad-assed silvery grey-blue Imperial you do not want to mess around with.

    # 008 // Street Fighter II
    Platform: Arcade
    Developer: Capcom
    Publisher: Capcom
    Year Released: 1991
Why it Made the Top 100 List: To this day, Street Fighter II remains one of the premier one-on-one versus videogames in existence. In fact, we still play it daily. Not only did Street Fighter II kick-start a genre which flooded the early '90s with copycat clones, but it also established many genre gameplay standards that persist even to this day: two-in-one combos, quarter-circle-forward and charge motions, etc. are still the foundation of many of today's fighting games. With a simple premise and subtly deep design, Street Fighter II established itself as a cultural icon for the youth of the time and easily deserves a top spot on our list.

    # 007 // StarCraft
    Platform: PC
    Developer: Blizzard
    Publisher: Blizzard
    Year Released: 1997
Why it Made the Top 100 List: StarCraft is hands down one of the best, if not the best, real-time strategy games ever created. With three distinct races, both in terms of gameplay and style Blizzard's masterpiece contains some of the most balanced and yet widely-varied units in the genre. Add in amazing production values which still look good and a brilliant story progression and you've got yourself one incredibly addictive and fulfilling strategy title that still has rabid fans all over the world. Eight years on and Blizzard continues to update the game to make it as great as it can be.

    # 006 // Sid Meier's Pirates!
    Platform: PC
    Developer: Microprose
    Publisher: Microprose
    Year Released: 1987
Why it Made the Top 100 List:One of the first and most open-ended and non-linear games in history, Sid Meier's booty-filled masterpiece is just as relevant today as it was nearly 20 years ago. Looking at the excellent remake/revamp for PC and Xbox proves that Pirates! is still every bit as fun, addictive, time-consuming and timeless as it was two decades ago. The game's simplicity, coupled with its seemingly never-ending possibilities, makes Pirates! just as accessible as it is deep. Sid Meier set a bar for adventure and exploration games that few to this day that have ever even approached.

    # 005 // Super Mario 64
    Platform: Nintendo 64
    Developer: Nintendo EAD
    Publisher: Nintendo
    Year Released: 1996
Why it Made our Top 100 List:Once upon a time, 3D games were unrefined, clumsy, and lacking precise control. And then Super Mario 64 came along and changed everything. The revolutionary title introduced analog sensitivity to console players and also showed the world that 3D games needn't be a chore to play. In stark contrast, Nintendo's breathtakingly beautiful platformer not only introduced a new level of control accuracy, but enveloped gamers in huge worlds filled with complementary objectives and challenges. Like Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 64 also successfully updated Nintendo's mascot franchise for a new generation of gamers. The game will go down in history as a true classic.

    # 004 // Sid Meier's Civilization II
    Platform: PC
    Developer: Microprose
    Publisher: Microprose
    Year Released: 1996
Why it Made the Top 100 List: You can't make a list of the best games ever without including at least half a dozen of the old Microprose titles. Our favorite by far is Sid Meier's Civilization II. Building on the addictive historical strategy concept pioneered in the original game, Civilization II is one of the deepest and most complex games ever made. Players lead their civilization from the founding of its first cities through the conquest of other planets. Along the way they'll set research priorities, manage the empire's economy, build new cities, negotiate with other civilizations and, best of all, wage war across the entire globe.

    # 003 // Tetris
    Platform: Multiple Systems
    Developer: Pajitnov/Pavlovsky/Gerasimov
    Publisher: Various
    Year Released: 1986
Why it Made the Top 100 List: In the mid-'80s a group of computer engineers designed Tetris in secret at the Russian Academy of Sciences. Thankfully, creator Alexey Pajitnov smuggled the hopelessly addictive videogame out of the Soviet Union and unleashed it across the world. Tetris is made timeless and brilliant because of its instant accessibility -- unlike chess, its motherland cousin. Rules are simple: players stack a series of falling, differently shaped "Tetramino" blocks in a well and attempt to keep it from filling up by clearing solid horizontal lines. Most Tetris players experience complete escapism, which is why many corporations and educational institutions loathe its existence. Tetris has gone on to inspire countless variations and will forever influence puzzle-based videogames.

    # 002 // Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
    Platform: Nintendo 64
    Developer: Nintendo EAD
    Publisher: Nintendo
    Year Released: 1998
Why it Made our Top 100 List: Considered by many critics to be the greatest game ever made, Nintendo's Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is one of only a handful of games to receive a perfect IGN rating. The masterpiece, which stars hero Link in both child and teenage form, helped pave the way for 3D adventure games, but it will likely be remembered and adored for two other reasons: first, it reinvented Nintendo's famed Zelda franchise and actually made it better. And second, it showed Nintendo 64 fans and the larger videogame community that as revolutionary and pretty as Super Mario 64 was, Nintendo still had some serious magic in its hefty bag of tricks. Ocarina of Time is an epic undertaking shining with tight control, ingenious level design and intuitive play mechanics. It remains one of the all-time most innovative adventure outings to date.

    # 001 // Super Mario Bros.
    Platform: NES
    Developer: Nintendo EAD
    Publisher: Nintendo
    Year Released: 1985
Why it Made our Top 100 List: Nintendo's beloved 2D platformer was number one on our Top 100 list a couple of years ago, and it had no problem holding onto the top spot in this year's vote. Perhaps the classic game remains an IGN favorite because it helped revitalize the videogame industry in the post-Atari era of gloom and doom. Or maybe it's cherished above all others because it so effortlessly represents everything that makes us love Nintendo-developed games in general: an unwavering attention to play control and level design. The game, which stars Nintendo's classic mascot hero Mario in 30-some levels of inspired 2D platforming, introduced millions of players to videogames and left them captivated. Super Mario Bros. remains one of the most pioneering and influential titles to date. More importantly, it's every bit as addictive, enjoyable, and satisfying today as it was two decades ago.

    # 020 // Ms. Pac Man
    Platform: Arcade
    Developer: Namco
    Publisher: Midway
    Year Released: 1981
Why it Made the Top 100 List: The easy-to-spot brilliance of Ms. Pac-Man lies in the simple gameplay and extraordinary accessibility. Anybody can play this arcade game right from the get-go, yet mastering the increased speeds and changing enemy patterns, and navigating the tricky maps with skill, is another thing entirely. Ms. Pac-Man was indeed a sequel, but along with its familiarity came cut-scenes, traveling food, more aggressive AI, and a complexity that built on the first without ruining it. Play this game today and you'll find it just as charming, enticing, and deep as it was in 1981. Plus, Namco brought a cheerful female lead character to the fray. Take that Lara Croft!

    # 019 // Metal Gear Solid
    Platform: PlayStation
    Developer: Konami
    Publisher: Konami
    Year Released: 1998
Why it Made the Top 100 List: While loads of other games were chasing the goal of a cinematic experience with cutscenes set between regular action, Metal Gear Solid was a landmark: a game that truly felt like a movie with its expert mix of storytelling and gameplay. Attention to detail was lavished on several different aspects from the conspiracy theory storyline to the environment, but most notably on the unique and innovative fights that stand out several years later. As the founder of the stealth genre, the original experience is still the benchmark against which the followers are measured.

    # 018 // ICO
    Platform: PlayStation 2
    Developer: SCEI
    Publisher: SCEA
    Year Released: 2001
Why it Made the Top 100 List: ICO's originality and near-perfection extended through every aspect of its experience. In the days of "more is better", ICO took the road less traveled and essentially abandoned the player in an almost entirely deserted castle, causing the environment itself to become a supporting character. The complete sense of loneliness makes ICO one of the more emotionally affecting games in history. As such, the game's art direction was essential in giving life to the title and it did so phenomenally. Very few games in history have blended game design and visuals together so seamlessly.

    # 017 // Star Control 2
    Platform: PC
    Developer: Toys for Bob
    Publisher: Accolade
    Year Released: 1992
Why it Made the Top 100 List:Star Control 2 is one of those games that's very fondly remembered by pretty much everyone that played it. Not only did it let you save the universe from an evil race bent on enslaving everything it came across, but it did so with a lot of action, adventure, and freedom of choice -- not exactly common in these types of games back in 1992. Accolade created one hell of a space adventure, leaving us wondering why this isn't one of the series being revisited in this time of sequels and remakes.

    # 016 // Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
    Platform: PlayStation
    Developer: Konami
    Publisher: Konami
    Year Released: 1997
Why it Made the Top 100 List: In the middle of the 3D age this 2D game came out and it was absolutely great. Although some of you may have a hard time wrapping your imaginations around what that exactly entails, just note that Konami's Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is an amazing experience. No one had considered that 2D games still had this much potential when it came out, but anyone who played SotN understands what the hype is all about. We followed the heroic Alucard through his dad's house, guiding his attacks against a flurry of demonic jerks. There was a huge range of weapons at our disposal and we even had access to some awesome magic upgrades. It could even be argued that this game is better than its 3D successor, Castlevania: Lament of Innocence. If that sounds absurd, go play and see for yourself.

    # 015 // Super Mario Kart
    Platform: SNES
    Developer: Nintendo
    Publisher: Nintendo
    Year Released: 1992
Why it Made the Top 100 List: There have been few games which provide as many hours of fun as Super Mario Kart. It offered fast and challenging single-player gaming and furious competitive play thanks to the tight skill-based system of driving that let the real masters show their stuff. While the other games in the series have their own appeal, they simply don't have courses as tight, fast, and perfect as the original Kart masterpiece. When shaving a hundredth of a second off of a track time becomes an obsession, you know it's a good game. Plus, given the right crowd, it makes a brilliant drinking game!

    # 014 // Rome: Total War
    Platform: PC
    Developer: The Creative Assembly
    Publisher: Activision
    Year Released: 2004
Why it Made the Top 100 List: A relative newcomer to the list, Rome: Total War nevertheless deserves its place here as the most cinematic and convincing representations of warfare available on any platform. Showcasing almost the whole panoply of ancient Roman Republican warfare, Rome: Total War is filled with everything a strategy gamer could want. Thousands of ancient warriors, from charioteers to hoplites, square off against each other in a beautiful 3D environment. The sights and sounds of battle have never been more compelling than they are here. A grand strategic campaign lets players train and march their armies across a map of Europe, North Africa and the Near East.

    # 013 // Chrono Trigger
    Platform: SNES
    Developer: Dream Project
    Publisher: Squaresoft
    Year Released: 1995
Why it Made the Top 100 List: While many credit the Final Fantasy series for bringing role-playing games to the masses, Chrono Trigger is considered by many to be the best console RPG of all time. It has all the requirements of a great Japanese RPG -- time travel, animal morphing and a brilliant soundtrack. With character designs by Akira Toriyama and a score by Yasunori Mitsuda and Nobuo Uematsu, this dynamic adventure has the perfect pedigree. Featuring more than a dozen unique endings, vivid characterization and great gameplay, it's no surprise Chrono Trigger is our highest-ranked RPG.

    # 012 // X-COM: UFO Defense
    Platform: PC
    Developer: Mythos Games
    Publisher: Microprose
    Year Released: 1994
Why it Made the Top 100 List: 1994 was certainly a memorable year. But while some will remember the cancelled World Series, that horrible Ace of Base song, and ice skaters clubbing each other in the leg, for us 1994 will always be remembered as the year of X-COM. The wonderful turn-based strategy game really has it all. Players battle an alien invasion all across the globe by building bases and handling inventory, intercepting and attacking UFOs, managing a staff of researchers and engineers, and sending your squads of soldiers off to engage in one of the most intense, enjoyable turn-based tactical games ever. Track this one down and we promise you won't be disappointed.

    # 011 // Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
    Platform: SNES
    Developer: Nintendo EAD
    Publisher: Nintendo
    Year Released: 1992
Why it Made our Top 100 List:The third game in Nintendo's acclaimed Zelda series, A Link to the Past ranks near Ocarina of Time as one of the greatest titles for a Nintendo platform. The game combines elements from its predecessors and spruces up the experience with updated visuals. Link must battle through a huge quest spanning two worlds, several complex dungeons and through opposition that includes huge monsters and an evil wizard. The game's wonderfully conceived exploration elements, environmental puzzles, colorful graphics and inspired soundtrack help it to stand out above the cream of the Zelda crop. A collector's item and a classic for any Zelda fan.

    # 030 // Halo
    Platform: Xbox
    Developer: Bungie
    Publisher: Microsoft
    Year Released: 2001
Why it Made the Top 100 List: Only a few games in the history of the industry can claim to be system sellers. Halo's crisp graphics, delicate weapon balancing and stellar multiplayer mode showed off the Xbox's edge in terms of power just enough to sway people away from Sony and Nintendo. Imitation is the highest form of flattery and almost every console FPS since the release of Halo mimicked some aspect of its control scheme. On top of that, Halo 2 earned the biggest day in entertainment history because thousands of people became devout followers of the Halo dynasty after just one game.

    # 029 // GoldenEye 007
    Platform: Nintendo 64
    Developer: Rare
    Publisher: Nintendo
    Year Released: 1997
Why it Made the Top 100 List: Game publishers have always used movie licenses to make videogames, usually to the games' demise. But Rare's slow patience and talented studio brought the excitement, control, and multiplayer component from the PC to the consoles and created one of the best-selling N64 titles of all time. Despite an occasionally shaky framerate, GoldenEye 007 had everything: stealth levels, the ability to dual-wield, different missions for different difficulty levels, stellar level design, and the best multiplayer component for a console in its day. The two- to four-player split-screen deathmatches featured a huge assortment of play options, tons of secret paths and chambers, and past Bond enemies such as Jaws, Baron Samedi, and more.

    # 028 // Half-Life 2
    Platform: PC
    Developer: Valve
    Publisher: Vivendi Universal Games
    Year Released: 2004
Why it Made the Top 100 List:There's probably going to be a bit of debate among the faithful as to the position of Half-Life and Half-Life 2 on this top 100 list. It was pretty obvious to all of us that both of them should be pretty high up there. When it came down to it, the original came out on top for its influence in the FPS genre and amazing AI for the time. But that can't take away from this brilliant sequel. It deserves all of the accolades that it has received since its release. It combined many different types of gameplay and levels into a meticulously created fictional future where inter-dimensional beings are trying to bring humans under their heel. Only the original Half-Life managed to make it higher on the list as a shooter, and with good reason.

    # 027 // Burnout 3: Takedown
    Platform: Multiple Systems
    Developer: Criterion
    Publisher: Electronic Arts
    Year Released: 2004
Why it Made the Top 100 List: Redefining speed for modern racing games, Burnout 3 is the fastest, craziest and most beautiful racing game on the current generation of consoles. Players are rewarded for driving into oncoming traffic, bumping opponents into buses and causing as much asphalt mayhem as possible. Every daring move earns more points and more speed. But sooner or later you're going to crash and that's where Burnout 3's true beauty shines. It's like the opening of every C.H.i.P.s episode compressed into a single slow-motion moment. The game's only downfall is the inclusion of easily one of the worst soundtracks ever put on a disc; fortunately the horrific sounds of a high-speed collision overwhelm the whiny pop-punk tunes.

    # 026 // Final Fantasy II (IV)
    Platform: SNES
    Developer: SquareSoft
    Publisher: SquareSoft
    Year Released: 1991
Why it Made the Top 100 List: Despite the fact that the U.S. version of SquareSoft's first 16-bit Final Fantasy was heavily censored compared to its Japanese counterpart (known as Final Fantasy IV across the Pacific), it's still one of the greatest role-playing games we've ever played -- and that's not just nostalgia talking. The game introduced many of the series' most popular staples including the introduction of the active battle system, an expanded repertoire of magic spells, the use of Chocobos, and one of the most popular additions: monster summoning. Throw in one of the strongest RPG stories ever told, truly excellent graphics, and some of Nobuo Uematsu's best audio work, and the formula for near-perfection is complete.

    # 025 // Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn
    Platform: PC
    Developer: BioWare
    Publisher: Interplay
    Year Released: 2000
Why it Made the Top 100 List:Believe it or not, there was a time when PC RPGs had an unbelievable amount of content, fat manuals, and a sense of artistry that's become harder to shoehorn in the face of an increasingly profit-oriented industry. BGII could be played for several days solid, and you'd barely ahve scratched the surface. It made Dungeons & Dragons not only accessible to the uninitiated, but darn-near delightful. On a truly epic scale, it gave us an engrossing story, colorful characters, exciting encounters, and the timeless joy of being a world-saving badass. And a branching story and varied character creation options made it possible to jump right back in after the first unbelievable run.

    # 024 // Tecmo Super Bowl
    Platform: NES
    Developer: Tecmo
    Publisher: Tecmo
    Year Released: 1991
Why it Made the Top 100 List: This is the one sports game that was the precursor to everything you still see today. It offered season mode with full stat tracking, injuries, and all of the players from the NFL, like the unstoppable Barry Sanders. In fact, Barry Saders was so fast, many tournaments actually instituted a no-Detroit rule. And while it was the original Tecmo Bowl that is credited with starting the sports game revolution, it's Tecmo Super Bowl that still lives on today as people continue to compete in the game across the country. Considering that the game was released back in 1991, that is a true indication of its classic status.

    # 023 // Super Mario Bros. 3
    Platform: NES
    Developer: Nintendo
    Publisher: Nintendo
    Year Released: 1990
Why it Made the Top 100 List: Directed by Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto, Super Mario Bros. 3 (or just Super Mario 3) stands as the NES and Super Famicom's swan song, at least where Mario is concerned. While Super Mario 3 marked the last major Mario game for Nintendo's first home console, it packed enough gaming goodness to rule a gamer's life for months. First off, it just played damn well. The controls felt intuitive and precise, for example, and levels boasted seriously awesome design. What's more, there was an array of suits for Mario to wear, like the Frog, Raccoon and Tanooki suits, all of which bestowed groovy powers never seen before in a Mario game. In a word: awesome.

    # 022 // Half-Life
    Platform: PC
    Developer: Valve
    Publisher: Sierra Studios
    Year Released: 1998
Why it Made the Top 100 List: Valve gave the FPS genre a solid kick in the pants by creating one of the most memorable and exciting single-player experiences ever. Rather than just providing players with unlimited ammo and throwing loads of beasties at them, Half-Life truly makes main character Gordon Freeman a part of the story as he helps to fight against an alien invasion and gets involved with plenty of scuffles against human soldiers along the way. Toss in some clever AI and this is an innovative title that has inspired many games (Halo, anyone?) that have come after it.

    # 021 // Deus Ex
    Platform: PC
    Developer: ION Storm Austin
    Publisher: Eidos
    Year Released: 2000
Why it Made the Top 100 List: In an industry chock-full of hype, Deus Ex offered a complex yet plausible web of X-Files-style conspiracy while guiding the player entertainingly through open-ended environments, problems with multiple solutions, and a skillful blend of action, role-playing and good ol' fashioned adventure. It presented larger-than-life set pieces without the sometimes excessive style of the similarly-themed Metal Gear Solid games. It gave us a ton of great voice acting, interesting characters, and a sense of drama and dystopian inevitability that still had a ray of light at the end of the tunnel. Not to mention pronunciation flame wars.

    # 040 // Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution

    Platform: PS2
    Developer: SEGA-AM2
    Publisher: SEGA
    Year Released: 2003
Why it Made the Top 100 List: The Virtua Fighter Series absolutely needs to be represented any Top 100 list. For anyone who popped in Virtua Fighter 1 when they opened up their SEGA Saturn, fighting games on home consoles would never be the same. VF4 Evo is the ultimate iteration of this game with the smoothest graphics, tightest gameplay, and a ridiculous number of modes. The Kumite mode is one of the best single player fighting game options ever created and the inclusion of the 10th Anniversary edition will make any SEGA fan misty eyed.

    # 039 // DOOM

    Platform: PC
    Developer: id Software
    Publisher: id Software
    Year Released: 1993
Why it Made the Top 100 List: Distributed as freeware less than a year after its predecessor Wolfenstein 3-D, Doom was the full Monty. The dark, disturbing hell-based theme, coupled with distinctly memorable sound effects from doorways opening, to hissing, howling and gnashing creatures, put atmosphere in the first-person shooter genre. Doom was packed with dozens of levels, awesome guns (the shotgun, plasma rifle, and BFG, for example) and adrenaline-pumping action. You couldn't look up, but it didn't matter. The game challenged your skills, saturated you with then-awesome graphics and sound, and genuinely burned into your subconscious. The fact that you could play multiplayer deathmatches via LAN vaulted this first-person shooter into gamers' hearts and minds forever.

    Platform: PlayStation 2
    Developer: Tiburon
    Publisher: Electronic Arts
    Year Released: 2003
Why it Made the Top 100 List: Arguably the best game in the ground-breaking Madden series, in 2004, gamers not only had a chance to own their own football videogame, but get a taste of what it's like to own their own NFL franchise. From increasing the price of popcorn to moving your team to a new city or even building a new stadium from the luxury suites down, the choice is finally yours. On the field, gameplay was enhanced to new levels, adding Playmaker controls on offense to give quarterbacks the ability to point to receivers and change their routes on the fly -- or roll out of the pocket and call for specific blocks to run for the first down. There's just so much to this game, it's no wonder that it's one of the most played videogames in the history of the genre.

    Platform: Nintendo 64

    Year Released: 1996
Why it Made the Top 100 List: The first and best of the jet ski games, Wave Race 64, a first-wave launch title Nintendo's cartridge-based system, incorporated water physics into racing unlike any game before it, or any since. The simple concept of racing on jet skis was complicated by changing wave patterns, swells, and rising tides, and Nintendo added its trademark depth to broaden and deepen the unique racer. The trick-based mini-games were addicting, the levels well thought out, and the constant spontaneity of the waves always made things challenging. The fact that you could unlock a rideable dolphin was icing on the cake.

    # 036 // Command & Conquer: Red Alert

    Platform: PC
    Developer: Westwood Studios
    Publisher: Virgin Interactive
    Year Released: 1996
Why it Made the Top 100 List: Westwood's Command & Conquer series -- born into a great tradition of like RTS experiences first established by the seminal Dune 2 -- has always offered a robust sort of real-time strategy. But while the original C&C often found itself contending with Blizzard's Warcraft brand for supremacy, Red Alert really had no equal. Westwood's alternate history RTS presented unparalleled strategy that perfectly married currently-applicable RTS interface conventions with diverse units to create some utterly compelling gameplay. When taken online or played over LAN, Red Alert simply excelled. Broken alliances and heedless harvester rushes still bring tears to our eyes. It didn't start the genre, but it probably started the crazy.

    Platform: PC
    Developer: Westwood Studios

    Year Released: 1992
Why it Made the Top 100 List: While Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty wasn't technically the first real-time strategy game, it established the model that nearly all RTS games have followed ever since. In addition to managing a variety of units, players had to harvest resources, build massive bases (complete with a technology tree), and pretty much do everything else that we've come to expect from the genre. Dune II also benefited from some great production values, with fabulous music and an in-game helper (called a Mentat) who explained many of the concepts needed to win. Though it only had the slightest connection to the Dune novels, it was a great game the paved the way for all other RTS games to come.

    # 034 // Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2

    Platform: Multiple Systems
    Developer: Neversoft
    Publisher: Activision
    Year Released: 2000
Why it Made the Top 100 List: It's much more complicated than this, but the original Tony Hawk's Pro Skater melded smart gameplay, great physics, a spot-on camera system, and an extreme sports mentality into a game that revolutionized action and sports games forever. The skating was fast, the levels smart, and the music raunchy, punk, and in-your-face. It was sheer brilliance, but it was a mostly vertical skate experience. The second game, arriving only one year later, took the level design and the play experience to new heights with the addition of the manual, a simple move that connected street tricks, and totally changed the experience. Connecting all your moves with the manual folded street tricks with the vertical play and launched the Tony Hawk series into history.

    Platform: PlayStation 2
    Developer: SCE Studios Santa Monica
    Publisher: SCEA
    Year Released: 2005
Why it Made the Top 100 List: Just when action games seemed to be running out of gas, Sony dropped this doozey on us. God of War takes the best elements of Devil May Cry, Rygar and Castlevania and then makes them better. By using ancient Greek mythology as the backdrop, this game plays like an interactive version of Clash of the Titans. In it we follow Kratos, a cursed warrior who must kill a god to earn freedom from his own nightmarish past. His best assets are a pair of mystical chain-linked blades that coincidentally lend themselves well to elaborate combo weaving. Because of that and a thousand other things, it's nearly impossible to limit oneself to only an hour of playing this amazing game. We rarely find games that indulge violence the way God of War does and it's even rarer for us to find one that does it so masterfully.

Why it Made our Top 100 List:Capcom took a risk with its creepy survival horror sequel, Resident Evil 4, because the game did not follow the franchise's template. Rather, it threw out the old mechanics and dunked players directly into a frenzied new environment filled with all-new scares. No zombies and fewer cheap frights. Instead, hero Leon S. Kennedy was forced to run for his very life -- crazed villagers and monstrous villains giving chase. The title's new 3D camera system and quickened control mechanics made for a more intuitive Resident Evil experience than ever, and the game's unparalleled graphics pushed the limits of this generation's technology.

Why it Made the Top 100 List: While any particular SimCity will probably be a fun little game, it was this version that really captures the charm of the series. For the first time, you had neighboring cities you could trade with, entertaining and informative newspapers you could read, the ability to build zones of different densities, all of which really added to the experience without introducing new problems. There were also subways to take the pressure off of surface transportation, new types of buildings to enrich the populace. If that's not enough, there was the Urban Renewal Kit add-on that allowed you to create your own content and refine the original templates.

Why it Made the Top 100 List: Wing Commander II refined the formula set by its predecessor and offered a space opera experience second to none. Full of genuine characters, intense action, and dazzling graphics, Wing Commander practically redefined space shooters when it shipped in the early 90s. Before Wing Commander III set the benchmark for "interactive movies" with its FMV sequences and use of real actors, Wing Commander II told an awesome story of sacrifice, bravery and camaraderie through great writing, in-game speech, and some of the best dog fighting you'll ever find in a PC space shooter. A classic in every sense of the word.

After being assigned the tricky task of selling a premium travel package, Manny Calavera is off on a search that uncovers a nasty plot, and he meets many unusual characters along the way. Why it Made the Top 100 List: If you've never played Secret of Mana and are a fan of action RPGs, you need to stop what you're doing and find a copy. This is one of the few games to combine the depth of story and exploration that are hallmarks of Japanese RPGs with an excellent action-oriented style of gameplay found in games like The Legend of Zelda series. Particularly cool are the wide range of enemies and environments, as well as the ability to level up in several different weapon and magic types for each of the three playable characters. Amazingly, the game even has two-player co-op mode after the first companion character is found. Awesome? Oh yes.

Why it Made the Top 100 List: Sure, you couldn't make Gretzky's head bleed like the previous installment in the series, but in losing the gore, the series gained a wealth of gameplay options. NHL '94 was the first game to support four players at once. It introduced one-timers to hockey videogames, and brought to the ice a fast, fun, and fierce gameplay experience that hockey games today are still trying to live up to. NHL 06 even pays homage to this classic by including the old Genesis version as a playable mode in the game.

Why it Made the Top 100 List: Nintendo needed Super Mario World to sell its all-new system, the SNES. As a result, Shigeru Miyamoto and crew designed one of the best platformers in existence. With its dazzling array of detail-rich worlds and character design (not to mention awesome sound and music) Super Mario World helped usher in the 16-bit era. But it wasn't just eye candy. Fans of the series welcomed Super Mario World's intricate design and finely tuned game mechanics every bit as much as the juicy visuals. Nintendo produced a classic title with Super Mario World, one as every bit engrossing as previous efforts.

    Year Released: 2002
Why it Made the Top 100 List: If anything, and specifically for us IGN editors, Battlefield 1942 has at least contributed to more lost work than any other game in all of existence. We often found ourselves playing for upwards of 15 hours straight. Fifteen hours without meal or rest. That's insanity -- insanity we happily volunteered for. DICE's Battlefield 1942 may have launched with a hefty collection of its own nasty quirks and bugs, but the brilliantly approachable first-person shooting it proposed to PC gamers was just too much to deny. The solidity of Quake with the comprehensiveness of Operation Flashpoint, only arcadey and unpredictable? We're sold! Tanks, planes, battleships, 64 players in a map... It took online action to a whole new level of craziness.

Why it Made the Top 100 List: Nintendo released Yoshi's Island at a time when 2D platformers were competing against snazzy 3D offerings from new 32-bit systems like Sony's Playstation. But you won't find many of those 3D action games sharing space with Yoshi's Island on this list. Even with the competition, Nintendo's latest Mario adventure offered some of the best platforming around. Using the FX2 graphics chip, Yoshi's Island married spectacular control and level design with captivating visuals, such as wicked rotation effects and a slew of other special effects. Truly one of the best examples of platforming action done right.

    Year Released: 1999
Why it Made the Top 100 List: The sequel to the decent arcade game Soul Edge, Namco's Soul Calibur helped launch the hardcore-friendly but ultimately doomed Dreamcast with a superb sword-based fighting game that remains one of the best fighters to date. Adding new characters, offering a better-than-average single-player campaign, and churning out some of the best graphics in its day, Soul Calibur was also remarkably well balanced and tightly tuned. Yes, you could lay down some button mashing combos, but the depth of each character allowed for subtle techniques and skill-dependent play that ultimately rewarded the hardcore over the noob. To be honest, we're far more fond of Soul Calibur than its slightly inferior sequel, Soul Calibur 2.

Why it Made the Top 100 List: The "real driving simulator" brought spot-on driving mechanics, an insane car lineup, and a vast and varied set of tracks to the PlayStation 2. Easily one of the best driving games of all time, it was so refined that even the next game in the series couldn't improve much on its design. Gran Turismo is the game that every driving simulation aims to dethrone, and with good reason. Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec is also one of the first games on any system to approach real-time photorealism, not only providing a system showpiece but an incredibly immersive driving experience as well.

Why it Made the Top 100 List: While the original is a nearly timeless groundbreaker, SS2 was one of the few games of its era that could truly freak you out if you played at night with headphones. It gave us a plausible and compelling continuation of the System Shock story while drastically ratcheting up the already-engrossing atmosphere with foreboding ambient noises and a sense of creeping through a derelict space ship inhabited only by you and a legion of lurking monstrosities that were once human. The mystery unraveled with excellent pacing and whiplash plot twists -- assuming you had the guts to continue down corridor after flickering corridor.

Why it Made the Top 100 List: Overlooked the last time around, Day of the Tentacle is on the list for the funny-as-hell adventures of three different characters as they tackle problems within the same house but in different periods of time: the present, 200 years in the past, and 200 years in the future. This opens up some bizarre possibilities for puzzles such as hiding away some wine to get some vinegar for the future or socking away a few hundred thousand quarters to shrink a sweater. All this to stop the mad plans of a purple tentacle that grew some limbs thanks to toxic waste. Classic.

Why it Made the Top 100 List: Swinging its way into the hearts of gamers, Bionic Commando stars the perfect mixture of G.I. Joe and Spider-Man. Sporting a bionic arm that allows him to swing, punch, and grab enemies, the Bionic Commando is Solid Snake with style. Though the game itself is short enough to be beaten in one day, many never did. Bionic Commando, like many games of the NES era, is as challenging as it is addictive. With a bad-ass helicopter battle and a final boss that may as well be Hitler, this action hit delivers even to this day.

Why it Made the Top 100 List:By combining an all-star character cast with intensely quick, fighter-meets-platforming gameplay, Nintendo created a four-player phenomenon with this franchise. The original N64 version rocked the gaming world and introduced the concept, but the GameCube iteration nearly perfected it with faster gameplay, deeper strategy, and more bonuses than you can shake a fire flower at. Even today with so many games released, no one has managed to successfully duplicate Super Smash Bros. It is truly one of the most original games of modern gaming and Nintendo itself will have trouble topping this sequel, which is unparalleled in style and execution.

Why it Made the Top 100 List: At one time, Mike Tyson was not only the greatest boxer in the world, but one of the greatest athletes. It's fitting that you played as Little Mac, who may have been the smallest boxer in the ring, but had a lot of heart. Battling your way through numerous comical boxers, including Soda Popinski and Mr. Sandman, the ultimate goal was to fight Iron Mike Tyson for the World Video Boxing Association Title. With a grin and a wink, Tyson unleashed a flurry of punches that, true to life, could knock Little Mac down with a single hit. No other boxing game has ever been as entertaining; few sports games have even been this good.

Why it Made the Top 100 List: If the innovations of Final Fantasy IV are what shaped Square's popular role-playing series into what it is today, then the polish of Final Fantasy VI (known as Final Fantasy III in the States) is what legitimized it. Boasting a unique and entirely customizable Esper summoning system and tons of ultra-cool character-specific abilities, FF3 is one of Square's finest achievements. Rarely will you ever find an RPG that sets standards on all levels -- visually, acoustically, and mechanically -- but 1994's swords and sorcery tale is one that's done it.

Why it Made the Top 100 List: The sequel allowed you to put armor on your party members and order them to stay or follow, but it's the original that's warmest in our gaming hearts. It offered a huge spectrum of actual role playing, problems that had no clear answers, an enormous environment, a dignified and mature grittiness, hilarious dialog, and a fully realized world that managed to breathe life into the otherwise fading post-apocalypse cultural awareness, with a retro 50s twist. You were a true anti-hero who just wanted to do his own thing -- a loner by nature who just wanted security and peace but had to go through hell to get there.

Why it Made the Top 100 List: It's a shame that Panzer Dragoon Saga came out at the end of the Saturn's short life. Too many people missed out on playing this gem of an RPG. Spanning 4 CDs, SEGA gave us a completely realized post-apocalyptic alternate world, complete with its own language. The story and art direction were phenomenal, but it was the combat system that had us hooked. With the ability to morph your dragon to fit your attack style and the need to constantly shift positions while doing battle, Panzer Dragoon Saga kept you on the edge of your seat.

Why it Made the Top 100 List: Along with Blizzard and Westwood, Ensemble is part of the Holy Trinity of real-time strategy developers. Nowhere was their capacity to craft historical, entertaining games more apparent than in the second in their popular Age series, Age of Empires II: Age of Kings. Set during the Middle Ages, Age of Kings allowed players to take command of a vast number of Medieval civilizations, all with their own unique strengths and personalities. The rock, paper, scissors mechanic and the wide variety of units available meant that the game had nearly limitless replayability. Though the day of 2D, sprite-based RTS games has passed, Age of Kings's gameplay still wins players over.

Why it Made our Top 100 List: The IGN editors are split on Retro Studios' dazzling Metroid Prime. A considerable faction of editors nominated the game for the Top 10 while another group argued that it doesn't deserve a spot on the overall list. A compromise was struck. Like Ocarina of Time and Super Mario 64, Prime will undoubtedly be remembered for updating the Metroid franchise in new and inventive ways. But the game will also have a very special place in the hearts of adventure fans for its polished control mechanics, gorgeous world and ingenious environmental puzzles. Prime remains one of the prettiest games on Nintendo's console, too. A must-have GameCube title.

Why it Made the Top 100 List: Love it or hate it, it is impossible to deny GTA3's influence. Reviled by the ignorant and revered by gamers the world over, it allowed you to go into an urban environment and do pretty much whatever the heck you wanted, from the safety of your living room couch. Steal a car, beat a pedestrian, fly off a ramp, cruise the boulevard, blow crap up, chase a thug, evade the police -- all within the space of five minutes. Huge environments, a great driving model, an entertaining story, and hilarious radio commercials and incidental dialog came together to make an infamous classic.

Why it Made the Top 100 List: This is one of the few games that became so wildly popular that it transcended videogames and became a part of popular culture. The deceptively deep game launched so many movies, TV shows, and toys that it's easy to forget just how great a game Pokemon is. By melding deep strategy, lovable characters, rewarding exploration, and a simple game interface, Nintendo delivered a game that succeeded on all levels. It brought a new dimension of interactivity to RPGs by making it beneficial to link up with other trainers to do battle or trade towards that ultimate goal of catching 'em all.

Why it Made the Top 100 List: This is the game that introduced gamers to Clyde "The Glide," Michael Jordan's baseline reverse, Sir Charles' gorilla slam, and of course, Tom Chambers dunking from the three-point line. This was the first 5-on-5 basketball game where you could actually tell the difference between the players on the court, not only by the graphics (and short shorts), but by the special moves that changed the way we played videogame hoops. And while there were only eight selectable teams and modes were limited to Exhibition and Playoffs, Lakers vs. Celtics' gameplay continues to live on in our minds, as we can still picture Barkley taking off from the free throw line and throwing it down with two hands.

Why it Made the Top 100 List: Sierra Online used to be the biggest thing going for online action games. One of our favorite titles from their catalog was the online sci-fi shooter Tribes. Players flew around in jetpacks, launching energy discs at each other in intense online matches. Long before Counter-Strike, Battlefield, and a host of other imitators, Tribes offered up more than 32 player support, different player classes, a variety of weapon kits and a handful of multi-passenger vehicles. Loads of gameplay types, a wide variety of maps, and plenty of team-oriented features (and a lack of copy protection) made Tribes one of the most popular online shooters around.

    Platform: Multiple Systems
    Developer: Ubisoft
    Publisher: Ubisoft
    Year Released: 2000
Why it Made the Top 100 List: Platform gaming has long been known for jumping, bopping enemies, and collecting items. Rayman 2 broke no new grounds in these areas, but instead perfected them as no other game had before. Starring a character with no arms, legs or neck, Rayman 2 is a demonstration of what the modern platform game could be -- smart, fast and challenging.

    Platform: PC
    Developer: Relic
    Publisher: Sierra
    Year Released: 1999
Why it Made the Top 100 List: Story is one aspect of gaming that doesn't always receive the attention it needs to move a game from good to classic. Homeworld provided one of the most unique RTS story experiences ever seen on the PC. It was hard not to become connected to the Kushan as they fought across the galaxy to regain their lives and their home while teetering on the brink of extinction. The fact that it was also the first fully 3D RTS (meaning you could move units on the Z axis as well) only helped create wicked challenges in a new type of environment. Homeworld was an excellently crafted game that will forever remain in a place of honor among other real-time strategy greats.

Why it Made the Top 100 List:"It is the year 3057 and mankind is once again at war." That introductory line alone still causes irregular heartbeats in PC gamers who can remember the glory of MechWarrior 2. Activision's first- and third-person mech combat simulator was essentially an uncompromising assortment of slick graphical wizardry, super-advanced audio, exciting online play, and remarkably complex gameplay mechanics that developers are still trying to dumb down for cousin Cletus. For years after its release, MechWarrior was used as a showcase for PC gaming. The story of the great Clans, Flacon the crusaders and Wolf the wardens, is one that birthed a 15-title series spanning multiple platforms and genres.

    Platform: GBA
    Developer: Intelligent Systems
    Publisher: Nintendo
    Year Released: 2001
Why it Made the Top 100 List: Nintendo's team at Intelligent Systems had been quietly making strategy games in the Famicom Wars series for years, but it was an inspired new visual style in the GBA edition that brought this game to international acclaim. The anime make-over caught the eyes of Nintendo fans in America and Europe. NOA took a chance in trying the stand-alone title here, and the rest is another chapter in Nintendo's book of history. The depth of strategy allowed players to battle alone for hours through memorable encounters on over 100 maps (as well as create their own maps for further challenge), while the multiplayer offering let up to four players wage war even with only one cartridge between them.

Why it Made the Top 100 List: For a while, Sonic the Hedgehog was the most recognized mascot in the entire world, bigger than Mickey Mouse and more recognized than the beloved Mario. If not for the little blue guy, Nintendo may have extended its iron grip on the industry for a number of years. Sonic introduced the adrenalin rush to video games and his first three titles reached a level of platforming Zen that developers are still trying to recreate in three dimensions.

Why it Made the Top 100 List: Anyone who played the original Prince of Persia and saw the new one in previews was probably a little apprehensive at first. But actually playing Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time should have dispelled any notion that the re-imagining of Jordan Mechner's classic would be anything less than a great experience. Finally, technology that does the great POP concept justice! Running on walls and performing amazing feats of acrobatic grace gave us heart-stopping moments we gamers live for. And then there was the innovative use of time rewind that allowed us to pause if we screwed up, rewind the action, and try it all again. If you haven't played this one, head to the nearest game store right now and pick it up.

Why it Made the Top 100 List: In this alternate universe, a giant dog in a trench coat and a naked homicidal rabbit go traveling across the country looking for an escaped Sasquatch. And while that's a great setup, it's the execution that consistently made this game stand out from the rest. Roadside attractions turn out not to be some pile of junk waiting for suckers, but mystical sites loaded with clues and clever puzzles to help the unlikely duo on their way. True to the comic that inspired it, Sam & Max Hit the Road starts out funny and keeps up its manic pace all the way to the end.

    Year Released: 1989
Why it Made the Top 100 List: One of the most in-depth and complete baseball games of the 8-bit era, Baseball Stars might have looked like an arcade slugfest from the outside, but the more you played it, the more you appreciated its rich gameplay, from players diving to rob a liner up the middle to even climbing the wall in the outfield to bring back that potential game-winning home run. On top of that, gamers were given the ability to create up to six teams from scratch with ability to customize the names of every player on the team, not to mention the ability to improve their skills by spending money earned through victories to boost their attribute points.

Why it Made the Top 100 List: Shining Force II was turn based strategy in perfect form. Before there were character heavy games like Final Fantasy Tactics, this series gave players more tactical choices than any other title on a console. In the second game players were able to roam from town to town between battles, limit the size of your army, and even keep extra items in a traveling storage bin. Last year Resurrection of the Dark Dragon was released on Game Boy Advance. After so many years the battles were still fun and challenging, further proving why these games are some of the best ever made.

    Platform: Arcade

Why it Made the Top 100 List: It was in 1983 that gamers caught their first glimpse of a galaxy that would some day be theirs to explore with the power of three-dimensional graphics at their side. There had been experiments with 3D techniques before, but like the movie that inspired the game, the arcade Star Wars brought us light-years ahead. You were inside an X-Wing, flying through deep space swarming with tie-fighters, swooping over the Death Star and weaving your way through towers and blaster-filled canyons. Deluxe arcade models even had cockpit to complete the experience. With exhilarating gameplay which is still addictive today and authentic Star Wars music and visuals, the Force will be with this game, always.

    # 077 // Archon: The Light and The Dark

    Platform: Home Computers, NES
    Developer: Free Fall
    Publisher: Electronic Arts
    Year Released: 1984
Why it Made the Top 100 List:It's like battle chess. That's the easiest way to describe Anne Westfall's, John Freeman's and Paul Reich III's incredible action-strategy hybrid, anyway. Archon features the equivalent of a chess board, atop which the nondescript forces of light and dark fight for dominance. Combatants on each side conform to specific classes but have unique attributes and powers of their own. Here, being the first to acquire an enemy square does not guarantee victory. Assaulting an opponent's piece will warp the game into a real-time battle presented similarly to Reich's own Star Control. It's exactly that combination of action and primitive strategic planning that made Archon so endearing.

    Platform: SNES

Why it Made the Top 100 List: What's better than Tetris? Depending on whom you talk to, its distant cousin Tetris Attack (and N64-released Pokémon Puzzle League) might be even more satisfying and addictive. Nintendo designers took what was already a sure-win formula and embellished it to cater to a more-demanding, evolved gamer. Tetris Attack presets colored square blocks in a well and has players swapping them into vertical or horizontal lines. Match three or more and they vanish. Seemingly simple, it is actually one of the most complex puzzlers due to the potential resulting combinations and chains. Played alone or with others, it's extremely addictive. Don't say we didn't warn you.

Why it Made the Top 100 List:Nathan Zachary is a pirate of the air. If we had to describe him we'd probably say he's a wacky combination of Tale Spin's Don Karnage and Harrison Ford's Indiana Jones. Nathan loves adventure, treasure, and hot women. He punches out villains, defies the law and flies his many configurable planes like a damn maniac. If you can come to grips with those activities, you will love Nathan and his videogame, Crimson Skies. Zipper Interactive may be best known for its SOCOM series of shooters, but the original Crimson Skies on PC is a flight action title without equal. Huge battles, terrific graphics, smooth controls, awesome audio, and an extra thousand points for personality make Crimson Skies an absolute winner.

Why it Made the Top 100 List: In Syndicate's fictional future, corporations rule the world. Their type of business runs short of scrupulous however, resorting largely to strong arm tactics and combat over diplomatic negotiations. This brutal future set the scene for tactical gameplay using your own band of super soldiers specially built to wipe out the competition. Not only was the game smart for its time, but the gritty future and RPG-like gameplay allowed for constant enhancement of your assets into stronger, faster, and nastier soldiers with weapons strong enough to slaughter hundreds of enemies if need be. Challenging missions and an awesome universe make Syndicate a game to remember.

    Platform: 3DO

Why it Made the Top 100 List: As a split-screen battle game, Return Fire set two players against each other as each tried to destroy the other player's base completely or nab the flag and bring it back to HQ. With a selection of vehicles which included an armored support vehicle and a tank that could take down enemy buildings and turrets there was plenty of opportunity to wreak havoc in the opponent's base and do some trash-talking. Still, nothing can compare to a frantic race home with the flag in the jeep as a helicopter rains down missiles and "Flight of the Bumblebee" blasts out from the background.

    Year Released: 1981
Why it Made the Top 100 List: While the original Galaxian brought the shooter to new levels (in fact, it brought the first true RGB colors to an arcade game), the refined, polished, and deeper Galaga perfected this irresistible arcade shooter. New enemy ships, different patterns, and the ability to free a captured Galaga ship enabled players to shoot using dual ships, creating a new dimension for the game. Instantly accessible, this coin-op game is just as much fun to play now as it was in 1981. It's just as deep, skill-based, and tantalizing as it ever was, and you'll never forget the simple trademark sound effects.

Why it Made the Top 100 List: Not only did Counter-Strike become the most successful online action game of all time, it also introduced the all-important modding community to the more casual PC gaming crowd. Counter-Strike brought round-based multiplayer gaming to the masses and paved the way for the popularity of games like Rainbow Six 3 on Xbox Live. The game's fast, addictive nature and "just one more round" addiction makes quitting a near impossibility. Even more than half a decade after its release Counter-Strike is still far and away the most played action game online, and that there says it all.

    Developer: SimTex
    Publisher: MicroProse Software
    Year Released: 1993
Why it Made the Top 100 List: While Civilization offered gamers a chance to live out their dreams of world domination, the truly ambitious gamers turned to another great title in the MicroProse catalog. Building on the success of Star Lords, SimTex's Master of Orion took the 4X style of gameplay (explore, expand, exploit, exterminate) to the stars, letting players build up a mighty galactic empire. Managing your empire's diplomacy, economy, technology and military was a big challenge but one that paid off with big rewards as you crushed you alien rivals. There have been other space empire games since, but none better.

    Platform: PC
    Developer: Infogrames
    Publisher: Interplay
    Year Released: 1992
Why it Made the Top 100 List: Inspiring and influencing a whole slew of games, from Resident Evil to Tomb Raider, Alone in the Dark was the first third-person, 3D action title and surely one of the scariest games anyone had seen at that time. Based loosely on the style and substance of the stories of H.P. Lovecraft, Alone in the Dark was very unsettling. The player took on the role of a paranormal investigator trying to escape from a manor haunted by a ghostly pirate, an animated suit of armor, a freakishly scary tree, and more zombies than you could shake a stick at. Though the graphics seem dated today, they were cutting edge at the time.

Why it Made the Top 100 List: Cloud and his boys have been around for eight years and they're still some of the most popular characters in gaming. Him, his giant sword, and his classic RPG heightened the profile of an entire genre of gaming. FFVII gave turn-based gameplay new meaning by gluing together plot points with some of the most cutting-edge CG cutscenes around. The end result was a compelling experience that rocked our world. It's undeniable that this one game pushed boundaries that were never even thought of in that time. Even today, FFVII still holds the imaginations of gamers all over the world.

    Year Released: 2000
Why it Made the Top 100 List: A first-person shooter where stealth is key, where being ignorant about your enemies and surroundings got you killed. Thief II surpassed the original with new abilities such as shooting buttons using arrows, invisibility, and setting and disarming traps. Practically anything you could do as a thief in a pen and paper RPG you could probably do in Thief II. Complimenting the game were its proto-Venetian setting where magic and technology co-exist and where dark, untamed forces threatened the fabric of reality. All this combined to make Thief II one of the best games of all time.

Why it Made the Top 100 List: When Squaresoft finally got a chance to design a Final Fantasy for PS2, it went all out. Everything from the jaw-dropping visuals to the epic storyline make Final Fantasy X one of the most memorable RPGs of the last decade. Amazing elements like groundbreaking CG sequences and innovative character designs took the franchise to another level. But what else would you expect from the people that gave us Cloud Strife, the spikey-haired blonde kid that took the gaming world by storm. There's really no doubt that Tidus and crew brought us one of the most amazing adventures on PS2, thus earning a coveted spot on our Top 100 List.

Why it Made the Top 100 List: There are many of you out there today that play modern platformers and have no recollection of the original Prince of Persia. But this single game influenced the platforming genre like nothing else, and if only by capturing every gamer's attention with amazing animations and lifelike acrobatics. Although everything was 2D, there was a profound amount of realism woven into what played out on screen. Great level design, exciting swordplay and a terrific story were all available in Jordan Mechner's Prince of Persia. If you get a hold of a copy, keep it.

Why it Made the Top 100 List: The Avatar is known throughout the PC gaming world as the most popular of all role-playing characters, but none of his adventures have been more trendsetting and groundbreaking than Ultima VII: The Black Gate. With the seventh Ultima, Richard "Lord British" Garriott and his team at the fabled Origin development house created a new breed of Americanized role-playing that would dictate the course of the genre and inspire other acclaimed developers such as Black Isle, BioWare and Obsidian to create their own award-winning works. The Black Gate utilized a new real-time combat system, advanced party management mechanics, a paper doll inventory screen, branching conversations, a reactive environment, and a totally navigable world in which the player could virtually do whatever he wanted. All in one game. Insanity.

    # 083 // Contra

    Platform: NES
    Developer: Konami
    Publisher: Konami
    Year Released: 1988
Why it Made the Top 100 List:Though released first in arcades, it was the NES conversion of Contra that most of us remember with fondness. Contra's simple gameplay pioneered new standards for the side-scrolling shooter genre, with eight-way directional shooting that allowed more freedom than the typical '80s shooter. Two-player cooperative play is also a huge part of why we loved (and continue to love) the game, as we still remember the co-op tactics of our youth: player one takes the spread gun, player two grabs the laser, and no one stops shooting. European gamers may share less adoration for the game (released there as Probotector with robots in place of humans) but we'll never forget the game that forced us to memorize the Konami code.

Why it Made the Top 100 List:Side-scrolling shooters were a dime a dozen in the 16-bit days, but Treasure's frantic Gunstar Heroes managed to stand out, and for good reason. The game's controls are deceptively simple but allow for unique twists to the genre, such as crazy mine cart antics and enemy tossing, which separate Gunstar Heroes from the rest of the crowded genre. The unique level design and boss fights--which include a brief stint on the top of a flying helicopter with a boss enemy swinging on the chopper blades--remain a showcase of the time and clearly demonstrate the creative genius of developer Treasure.

Why it Made the Top 100 List:Fun. It's a word we might often forget when sifting through the endless waves of gore-ridden shooters and painfully generic ---- 'n slash titles that have saturated our market in recent years, but it's certainly not an idea Irrational has ever lost sight of. Those Bostonian and Australian wonder developers took fun to a whole new colorful level when they made Freedom Force. The terrific strategy-RPG took a combat system inspired by Baldur's Gate and delivered it with an amazingly intuitive interface. Irrational then infused the whole package with honest to goodness life. Freedom Force features a lighthearted storyline, excellent character development tools, and a spark -- a spark that makes us happy.

    Year Released: 1990
Why it Made the Top 100 List: Sometimes, kicking someone's ass is the solution to all of your problems. In the case of River City Ransom, it was kicking several hundred people's asses that solved Ryan's problems. The wonderful art style of thick headed toughies (also found in Technos' excellent Super Dodge Ball) makes beating the crap out of your enemies and stealing their money in order to buy upgrades to beat them up more efficiently so much fun! Fighting street gangs to get your girl back was pretty popular back in the early days of gaming, but River City Ransom brought style and light RPG elements into the mix to create one of the ultimate banger experiences.

Why it Made the Top 100 List: Best known for being the first game to introduce full-range movement in a first-person perspective, Ultima Underworld helped usher a new era in digital entertainment. Apart from the revolutionary viewpoint, it offered a slew of innovative ideas that changed the action-RPG genre for the better. To start, you could manually change the speed and power of attacks. You could also engage in truly engrossing puzzle solving in a 3D arena. Plus, the game just plain offered a richly detailed game world for you to tear through. Blend this with solid action, cool items and spells (not to mention weapons) and you've got a recipe for gaming greatness.

    # 098 // BattleToads

    Platform: NES
    Developer: Rare
    Publisher: TradeWest
    Year Released: 1991
Why it Made the Top 100 List: One of the best-looking titles for the NES, Battletoads borrowed heavily from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles property. It took a trio of harmless amphibians and mutated them into a band of green-skinned, ass-kicking super heroes. What made the game so unique, apart from the admittedly rad hero and enemy design, was the varied gameplay. Battletoads splits between various play styles such as racing and climbing stages, all of which sported insane obstacles. And by insane, you should understand these challengers were wildly difficult. Battletoads was near impossible to complete. While theoretically possible to complete, few gamers could profess to beating the game without having to totally lie about it. Still, it's one of the best games that came out of the 8-bit era.

Why it Made the Top 100 List: While it could be argued that the newer GameCube update or even the Japan-only F-Zero X Construction Kit (N64) are the best of the franchise, the original was the one that jumpstarted the genre. It capitalized on SNES's 3D-esque Mode 7 visuals to bring futuristic racing, an incredible sense of speed, and addictive drift physics to eager gamers. In the 16-bit era it provided something unexpected and truly dazzling for the home console. It was a rare gem in its time, perfectly combining presentation and functionality to create a completely new gaming experience. Even today it is respected as one of the all-time top racers.

Why it Made the Top 100 List:Illusion Softworks really pulled out the stops with their organized crime epic in 2002. It took the free roaming style of city-based gameplay that had become popularized in the Grand Theft Auto series, but created a much more detailed world set in the classic gangster ridden '30s. This heavy third-person action game not only provided some incredible missions both in challenge and variety. The developers managed to make all of the pieces fit together perfectly with a superb story telling the tale of one gangster's rise and fall from glory. Just make sure to pick this one up on the PC as the console versions ruin a fantastic game.

    Platform: Sega Genesis
    Developer: Technosoft
    Publisher: Technosoft
    Year Released: 1990
Why it Made the Top 100 List: Whether or not you dispute its position as the industry's first real-time strategy game, Herzog Zwei was surely a revelation when it was released in 1990. Players each took charge of a giant, transformable robot and battled for control of a number of bases, creating and deploying units as needed to fend off your enemy. As the name implies, Herzog Zwei was built as a two-player game and it remained one of the most enjoyable two-player games to be found on the Genesis. It wasn't the most successful game on the system but it was easily one of the most fun and most important.

    Year Released: 1998
Why it Made the Top 100 List: In 1998, all the Tangos in the world couldn't stand against John Clark and his band of lethal enforcers, The Rainbow Six. Realism was a word that died upon the lips of many ostentatious developers, yet seemingly out of the blue, Red Storm Entertainment swooped in from the sidelines and wowed the gaming public with a formula consisting of ruthless realism, nail-biting suspense, and carefully crafted action. Whether you were spending hours upon hours devising an iron-clad mission plan or enduring countless days without sleep conquering foes in online deathmatch, Rainbow Six had a seemingly endless amount of replay value. To this day the series remains one of the most innovative and technically refined action franchises available on the market.

    Publisher: Activision
    Year Released: 1997
Why it Made the Top 100 List: It's too bad there isn't more room on this list for multiplayer PC shooters. While the original was a fine game, it had a little problem of only looking nice on those expensive 3Dfx video cards. Quake 2, meanwhile, was much more forgiving, and many of us took into our hardcore hearts and fragged each other into delightful oblivion until the wee hours of the morning. It offered a streamlined and fluid brutality that's still satisfyingly memorable all these years later. It was also quite friendly to amateur creators, granting the community a treasure chest of maps, character models, character skins, game modes, and more.

    Platform: NES
    Developer: Enix
    Publisher: Nintendo
    Year Released: 1989
Why it Made the Top 100 List: Dragon Warrior (Dragon Quest in Japan) launched one of the most successful RPG franchises of all time. Enix created an addicting experience by asking players to level up their character and save up gold to buy new equipment before moving on to the next dungeon. Nintendo was so sure about the game's universal appeal that they even gave away a copy for free with a subscription to Nintendo Power. Simple by today's standards, it laid out many of the foundations that today's turn-based RPGs live by.

    Developer: SEGA
    Publisher: SEGA
    Year Released: 2000
Why it Made the Top 100 List:Highly addictive, incredibly simple, and visually impressive, Virtua Tennis might be described as the best version of pong ever created. Showing the same brilliance that was displayed in Crazy Taxi, SEGA was able to include a series of mini-games that had players doing everything imaginable with a tennis ball. These diversions combined with the instant party of doubles matches are more than enough to keep a Dreamcast handy. Until you pick up a controller it can be difficult to understand just how much fun SEGA was able to make tennis.

    NextGen for FIFA 09

The year is ending soon, but we have the first official information of FIFA 09. In a games 2008 preview the German games magazine GameStar (02/2008) has written a small text about the new EA Sports games:

In 2008 there will be new versions of the big EA-Sports series again, that means NBA Live 09, Madden NFL 09, FIFA 09 & Co. There aren't available lots of details up to now, but the developpers have announced that the PC versions will get the technic of the much more beautiful console versions - finally! The original licences of the leagues will be included again, too.

With other words: FIFA 09 will use the NextGen technic on the PC, too! Great news, I think!

Copper Innovations Group

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

Shaak Ti – Master Kota – Maris Brood – Juno Eclipse – Proxy
