Samsung's eight-core processor will ship in 30 percent of Galaxy S4 handsets
Chip falls victim to performance issues
KOREAN PHONE MAKER Samsung's Exynos 5 Octa eight-core processor will ship on just 30 percent of Galaxy S4 handsets.Samsung has been keen to talk up the fact that its flagship Samsung Galaxy S4 handset, due to be released on 26 April, will be the first octo-core smartphone on the market thanks to the inclusion of its Exynos 5 Octa eight-core chip. However, Korean news outlet ETNews is reporting that just 30 percent of Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphones will ship with the eight-core chip, while 70 percent will ship with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 quad-core 1.9GHz chip instead.Samsung's LSI division, responsible for the eight-core CPU, is supposedly to blame. If certain industry sources are to be believed, the division has failed to fix performance issues in the Exynos 5 chip, which has also fallen victim to unspecified "design errors". Apparently because of these problems, 70 percent of the first 10 million Galaxy S4s sold will ship without the it.ETNews added that Samsung is working on resolving the issues but it's unclear when this will be finished. It's also unclear whether these problems will lead to Galaxy S4 delays in certain parts of the world, but Samsung has yet to confirm this.Of course, this isn't terrible news for Galaxy S4 buyers here in the UK, as Samsung has already revealed that we'll be getting the quad-core version anyway, due to the Exynos 5 Octa chip's lack of support for 4G connectivity. However it's bad news for other Galaxy S4 buyers around the globe who wanted to boast that they had the world's first eight-core smartphone - although, in reality, most won't notice much difference in processing power. We've contacted Samsung for comment, but have not heard back at the time of publication. µ
