Newborn baby alive after 40 hours in sewer (25th June, 2013)

A newborn baby boy is alive after spending 40 hours in a sewer in an apartment building in Alicante, Spain. Firefighters rescued the baby from under a manhole cover. The child was wrapped in a plastic bag with a hole in it so he could breathe. A man from the apartment building called the police after he heard a sound coming from the sewer. He told reporters his story of what happened, saying: "I thought it was a cat that was trapped and that the baby's crying was its meowing. The noise went on for ages so I called the police. One of the firefighters saw one of his tiny feet and realised it wasn't a cat but a child." The baby boy, who weighs 2.1kg, is now safe in hospital. He has a broken arm and a few other injuries.
Spanish police arrested the 26-year-old mother of the baby soon after he was found. She is being charged with attempted murder for trying to kill her son. Police have not yet named the woman. Police officers said she went to a local hospital after she gave birth and told nurses she had suffered a miscarriage. She then told the police that she pushed her baby down a drain because she was too poor to pay for an abortion. Police are now trying to find out if she acted alone or if someone helped her. Last month, emergency workers in eastern China had to rescue a newborn baby after it became stuck in a sewer pipe. Its mother tried to give birth in secret and said the baby slipped down the toilet.

U.S. President Barack Obama has hailed Nelson Mandela as a personal inspiration while on a visit to South Africa. Mr Obama declined to visit Mr Mandela due to the former South African president's poor health. A White House statement explained: "Out of deference to Nelson Mandela's peace and comfort and the family's wishes, [the Obamas] will not be visiting the hospital." Obama made it clear to reporters on Air Force One that he had no intention of putting Mr Mandela's health any further at risk, saying: "I don't need a photo op….The last thing I want to do is to be in any way obtrusive at a time when the family is concerned about Nelson Mandela's condition."
President Obama called Mandela a "personal hero" and that Mandela's sacrifices to achieve equal rights helped inspire his own political career. While flying to South Africa, Obama told reporters: "The main message we'll want to deliver…is simply a profound gratitude for his leadership all these years, and that the thoughts and prayers of the American people are with him and his family and his country." Obama later told university students in Pretoria to learn lessons from Mandela's strength while he was in prison for 27 years. He said: "Think about the hardships and the struggles and being away from family and friends. There were dark moments that tested his faith in humanity, but he refused to give up."

پيش فرض World's largest building opens in China (3rd July, 2013)

China is building up a large collection of the biggest things in the world. The latest addition is the world's largest building. It is called the New Century Global Center and it opened this week in Chengdu, Sichuan province, in China's southwest. It is 500 meters long, 400 meters wide and 100 meters high. The area inside covers an amazing 1.76 million square meters. The building is so big that 20 Sydney Opera Houses could fit inside. It is almost three times the size of the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. It took thousands of workers just three years to build the enormous structure. The center is an important part of plans to make Chengdu a 21st-century city. It fits with the city's slogan, "Chengdu – Can Do".
The inside of the center is almost like a small city in itself. There are around 400,000 square meters of shopping space, a 15-screen IMAX movie theatre complex and an ice rink big enough to hold international competitions. There are also offices, hotels, a replica Mediterranean village and a water park. The building's owners hope it will attract business and tourists from across China and the world. It is all part of a wider plan to put Chengdu on the global map. Around 14 million people currently live in the city, but that is set to increase. The city is also a magnet for investment and is one of China's most important industrial regions. The area is also home to the world's largest giant panda nature reserve.
