Hi i got some trouble too, with the september and the october version too
so the best thing to do is :
- create a shortcut for UDK with Editor -log
- delete the udkGame/content/refshadercachePC-D3D-SM3.upk
-launch the shortcut you have just created.
the log window show you the compiling process for all Engine shaders, and the Editor shaders.
after that all compiled files are compressed to generate the UPK file, but the news file who is creating
get a different name 'localShadercache-PCD3D-SM3.UPK'
the compilation and compression procces is a long task. On my old laptop this have taken 80 minutes to be done(without the copression step).
I have let my computer during all the night,andthe compression hasn't finish.
but for me the editor has begins to start, that the good thing
well the localshadercache pc-d3D-SM3.udk file has not been created
i was try many thing like updating my nivdia 8600M GT with the lastest driver, without any good issue
i reinstalling and update the framework 3.5 SP1, without any issue too
try the refshadercache file from the August verions, but in vaine.
I noticed two stuff
shaders system has been updated in the september version
refshader cache SM2 upk has disappear since the september release
I have try this, but the log window, seems to be blocked too...

Shader Model 3
