Google announced an impressive achievement for its mobile OS today - the ten billionth app download in its Android Market.
While the milestone is impressive enough on its own, it is the rate of growth which is truly staggering - four billion of the downloads have taken place in the last six months alone. See the graphic below.
To celebrate the accomplishment, Google put a number of popular apps and games on sale in the market for only ten pennies, so if you are an Android OS user, go ahead and start shopping!

When Sony Ericsson explained how hard it is to release a major software update, we got the feeling that we're in for a pretty long wait. Yet, it seems that the company's developers are progressing faster than expected as they just released an alpha preview, which can be used by devs to start working on apps for Android Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) right now.
The preview ROM isn't suited for a day-to-day use - major features like telephony, Wi-Fi and Google apps aren't functional just yet. Also, only the Xperia arc S, Xperia neo V and Xperia ray are getting ICS preview ROMs. The rest of the phones will still get ICS when its finalized, of course, but if you want to check out the alpha you need to use one of those three.
If you're a developer, who wants to flash their compatible phone (again, this really isn't suited for daily usage), you need to be running software with build number 4.0.2.A.0.42 (that's the latest available).
Also, you need to unlock the bootloader, but keep in mind that if you do that, some issues may arise when the proper release of the Ice Cream Sandwich starts seeding to your phone.
Anyway, there's a good deal of things that are already up and running and here goes the complete list:
New “Roboto” font
New “Holo” theme is supported (you are able to test apps written to make use of the Holo theme)
Music player control from lock screen
Updated UI in the Settings menu
Updated UI in the web browser
Updated UI and interaction with the new messaging action bar
Updated UI for improved multitasking
Swipe to dismiss notifications, tasks and browser tabs in the Notification menu
You may want to check out the following video, showcasing these new things. Much like with the leaked Ice Cream Sandwich ROM for the Samsung Galaxy S II, the custom interface covers most of ICS but you get to see a glimpse of Android 4.0's cool new elements here and there.
If you like what you see and want to develop apps for ICS, you may want to follow this link to the Sony Ericsson's blog post for more info and download links.

Gametel Portable Games Controller for Android aims to bring greater feel to your mobile gaming [REVIEW]
We caught wind of Fructel’s Bluetooth games controller not long ago, designed to give any Android device a little more gaming freedom with its dedicated gaming controls.
Well, now we’ve actually had the chance to take the Gametel games controller for a spin so we can really tell you what it’s all about.
The controller itself is a mix of textured and smooth plastics with a few white graphics on the D-pad and four primary buttons. The whole thing is small enough to comfortably fit in your pocket when fully packed down and it’s light so you won’t notice it when you’re not using it.

The spring loaded clamp on the top allows you to drop in your droid of choice and you’re then ready to fire it up. The start button doubles as the on/off switch and once it’s powered up, the rest of the set up is droid-side, no rocket science here.
Fructel have already created a driver app on the Android Market, which not only allows you to choose your Gametel controller as the preferred input method for your device, an option you will have to switch to and from when you switch to something like your on-screen keyboard, but also shows a list of compatible titles (currently a shortlist of 50 and growing).
So we’ve mounted our device, connected it via Bluetooth using the Gametel app and installed a game that’s fit for purpose, now the fun can begin:
Asphalt 5 HD was our initial guinea pig and the Gametel certainly wowed with its responsiveness. There were no issues with latency or connectivity and it undoubtedly made for a more enjoyable experience than using on-screen controls. Trial Xtreme was the second title (demoed above) and again, the experience was smooth and seamless.
Being a Bluetooth peripheral, the Gametel doesn’t have to be attached to the device and in truth, the bracket won’t allow for much past perhaps a 4″ display anyway, but as such, range is safely useable up to around 10 meters, which is decent to say the least.
Depending on the game in play, you can even use four separate Gametels for local multiplayer gaming, which is a welcome feature and actually quite a powerful tool in the Gametel’s repertoire.
It won’t quite equal the likes of the Xperia PLAY in terms of usability, but it does make mobile gaming a viable option for a host more Android devices out there, that otherwise, probably wouldn’t be seeing much action past Angry Birds. Size and weight are minimal, battery life is an impressive 9 hours and it does its job well.
For those of you wanting to enhance your mobile gaming experience, without locking yourself into the Xperia PLAY or forking out the extra cash for a Nintendo 3DS or PS Vita, the Gametel offers a low cost alternative (it retails for £50 on Amazon UK) that might just be right for you, and if you get bored for the day, it’s not stuck on your device for good.
Check out this link for the Gametel’s official site including detailed specs and a link to their Amazon store page. Let us know your thoughts on the prospect of gaming with the Gametel or if you already own one, your experiences so far, in the comments below.

Samsung unveils ICS update schedule for Galaxy line
Samsung has already confirmed that certain models will be getting the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update, but now they've provided the full list along with some expected release dates.
The Samsung Galaxy S II and Samsung Galaxy Note will make the jump to ICS first, in the first quarter of 2012. The Google Nexus S by Samsung is already munching on Ice Cream Sandwich, but the Nexus line is a special case.
The other Galaxy phones that will receive the update are the Galaxy S II LTE and the Galaxy R. The new tablets will be getting it too - Tab 10.1, Tab 8.9, Tab 7.7 and Tab 7.0 Plus.
The update schedule for these models will be released later on. Samsung warns that the update might come at different times depending on your market and carrier.
The rest of the Galaxy line seems to be out of luck, at least as far as official means are concerned. You can always try a custom ROM though, we've already seen the Galaxy Ace run ICS.

Andy Rubin: 700,000 Android devices activated everyday
Back in May it was 400,000. In June it went up to 500,000 and in July it was 550,000. Now Andy Rubin, Senior Vice President of Mobile at Google, has posted on his Google+ profile that Android has reached 700,000 activations per day.
To clarify how they arrived at this figure, Rubin clarified that they only count each device once and if it connects to a wireless service provider. He didn't mention anything about devices that only connect through Wi-Fi or have been running on multiple custom ROMs.
Still, whichever way you look at it, it's still a big number and more importantly it's still growing. And although they did not managed to hit the 1 million mark that some predicted they would by October it seems it won't be long before they do.

Sony Ericsson reveals Xperia ICS update roadmap
Sony Ericsson's R&D center has obviously been making significant progress with the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Xperia lineup, as the company is now ready to talk specific dates.
A post on the company's blog has pledged a start of the updating process for the Xperia smartphones to the latest Android version at the end of March/early April 2012. The first batch of Sony Ericsson phones to get a taste of ICS includes Xperia arc S, Xperia neo V and Xperia ray.
The update rollout for the second wave will begin from the end April or the start of May 2012. At that point the other seven Xperia smartphones eligible for an update will start getting in - Xperia arc, Xperia PLAY, Xperia neo, Xperia mini and mini pro, Xperia pro, Xperia active. The only non-Xperia Sony Ericsson to get an ICS update, Live with Walkman will also join this second group.
And don't worry, Sony Ericsson will make sure that you will be properly notified when the time to update your phone comes.

Apple AppStore makes 6x more revenue than Android Market
t’s time for another research. It is about the most popular mobile application stores and is done by Distimo.
The first and more important thing is the Apple's App Store generates six times more revenue than the Android Market. The calculations are done over the 200 top grossing apps. The App Store on the iPhones is still earning four times more than the Android Market, while the one on the iPads is doing twice as good as the whole Market.
The in-app purchases are gaining lots of popularity too - half of the revenue from those 200 top grossing apps in the App Store comes from in-app purchases, while the Android Market's share is even bigger - up to 65%.
The Chinese App Store downloads have grown a lot bigger compared to January this year. Check the picture below, it compares the US and the Chinese downloads.
Finally, the Windows Phone Marketplace is now the fourth largest store - its total number of available games beats the one of Amazon's Appstore, the Ovi Store and the BlackBerry App World.
So, the Android's Market might be catching up with the App Store, but the Apple's platform is still the most profitable one for the developers.

Firefox for Android gets updated to version 9, focuses on improving the tablet experience
Firefox on Android may not have had the same success as its desktop counterpart but Mozilla has not given up hope and so right after Firefox 9 for the desktop computers came out they have released Firefox 9 for Android. The main focus of this update is improving the UI experience on Android tablets. The browser now shows all the open tabs on the left side of the screen after you drag it out as large thumbnails. To make efficient use of display space, the thumbnail view switches to a simple drop down list for tabs when you switch to portrait mode and the browser goes full-screen. There’s also something called an Action Bar, which is basically like the drop down menu in the top-left corner of the desktop version of Firefox, wherein it has all the additional options such as Add-ons, downloads and preferences.
Apart from the tablet optimizations, Mozilla has also added support for HTML5 input tag for camera access, so that developers can now include functions on their websites which can directly launch the camera from within the browser. They have also added support for HTML5 form validation.
You can check out the new Firefox 9 for Android browser in action in the video below. I’m sure Mozilla hopes that you will ignore the crippling lag as you marvel at all the amazing new features.

LG reveals Android Ice Cream Sandwich update schedule
LG promised us an upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich for their phones released this year and they plan to keep that promise. To assert this, they have just announced a release schedule for the Ice Cream Sandwich update.
The updates will start rolling out in two waves. The first wave will begin in Q2, 2012 and it will cover the following handsets: the LG Optimus LTE, Prada phone by LG 3.0, the LG Optimus 2X, the LG Optimus Sol, the LG my Touch Q and the LG Eclipse.
The second wave of updates will begin in Q3, 2012 and will cover the following handsets: the LG Optimus 3D, the LG Optimus Black, the LG Optimus Big, the LG Optimus Q2 and the LG Optimus EX.
This has to be by far the most comprehensive update schedule we have seen to date from any Android OEM. LG has been slow with the Android updates till now, choosing to launch their phones with an outdated version instead but like Sony Ericsson they have slowly learned the importance of timely updates and now seem to be doing an even better job compared to the likes of Samsung and HTC.

HTC confirms ICS update for 7 smartphones via Facebook
HTC's Turkish branch went just confirmed through its Facebook page that 7 of the company's smartphones will receive an Ice Cream Sandwich update this month and then took it down.
The devices in question are the Sensation, Sensation XE, Sensation XL, Amaze 4G, Rezound, EVO Design 4G and Vidid. There's also a word on the HTC Thunderbolt, which should receive the ICS update by the end of Q1 of 2012.
It's still uncertain which of the unconfirmed HTC droids will get the ICS treatment, but things are obviously developing quickly so we should know pretty soon.

It seems Google was tired of seeing all the ugly Android apps on their brand new Ice Cream Sandwich OS. And they ought to; Ice Cream Sandwich is a beautiful product on its own but when you launch a third-part app that does not follow the same design principles as the OS then it sticks out like a sore thumb and spoils the experience for the entire OS and not just the app.
So to set things straight, Google has now released an exhaustive list of UI guidelines for developers to follow so that their apps have the same consistent look and feel as the OS. This is the first time Google is doing something like this for Android. In comparison, both Apple and Microsoft have had UI guidelines in place for a long time now, which is why you see iOS or Windows Phone apps that look similar to the OS to the point where you can't tell a third party app from those built-in. With these new UI guidelines, Google aims to achieve a similar consistency.
Having said that, Google has only provided these as suggestions instead of making them mandatory, so you will still find lazy developers not choosing to change their UI to fit the new look of Android. Hopefully though, the large majority will see the light and make the necessary changes.
Another thing to note is that Ice Cream Sandwich itself is available only on [ برای مشاهده لینک ، با نام کاربری خود وارد شوید یا ثبت نام کنید ] of the devices out there, so developers currently have little motivation to modify their apps for ICS. It also remains to be seen how these modified apps will look on older versions of Android. Google needs to work hard to increase ICS usage on Android before they can expect the developers to create apps for it.
The newly released Android Style Guide is not only a great new tool for developers as well as a tool for Google in its fight against problems of inconsistent UI design in apps, but it actually says quite a lot about how Google has traditionally done things, how it is changing, and points to where Google still needs to keep working. Oddly, the way forward for Google has always been hidden in the Android logo itself. No brand logo has ever been remixed, altered and changed as much as the Android logo, and that parallels the platform itself. However, no matter how much the Android logo is remixed, it is always instantly recognizable as the Android logo, and that is the aim of Matias Duarte and the new Android Style Guide - to give the Android platform an underlying identity and consistency while still allowing the differentiation that has become the hallmark of the platform.
If you're looking to pick nits with Google and Android, the first thing you'll notice about the new style guide is that it is completely optional. There is nothing mandated, just suggestions on how to best make your app fit into the Android platform. Anyone who knows Android (and more importantly Google) know that this is nothing new, and it's nothing that is likely to change any time soon. Google has always preferred to lead by example rather than by rules, to use the carrot not the stick. As we've [ برای مشاهده لینک ، با نام کاربری خود وارد شوید یا ثبت نام کنید ] , asking Google to change this behavior is like asking for Google to be Apple, which simply isn't going to happen. There are fundamental personality differences between the two companies which are in opposition and will not allow Google to close in with too many rules nor allow Apple to open up with too many options. However, just because the two companies do create products in very different ways doesn't mean that they can't hold the same values, or at least that's what Matias Duarte believes.
Matias is on a crusade to stop design from being an afterthought at Google. He firmly believes that just because a platform is open doesn't mean that it has to look bad or have inconsistent UI. He is right, of course, but he is also a dreamer. The road is a difficult one, but Matias also seems to understand that changing the culture at Google needs some basic building blocks in place.
Building block #1: Explanations
The new Android Style Guide doesn't just show the problem Android has had with inconsistent UI in apps, it shows the problem that Google has had and continues to have with getting people to understand its products. Android has been on the market for just over 3 years and this is the first time that the company decided it was necessary to give developers a style guide. This is a fundamental problem with Google. Google just expects people to either understand its products, or be willing to take the time to figure out its products.
In a way, this is great, and it's a reason why so many people love Google products. There are a lot of people in the world who love to dig into things and learn how they work, find the hidden features, and the best ways to do things. Unfortunately, those people are the minority. Most people need guides, or manuals, or even just someone to teach them how to use a product. This extends from consumers picking up a new phone to experienced developers.
Apple understands this idea and has taken it to the extreme. Apple may not include manuals with its products, but that's because it works extremely hard to make its products as intuitive as possible, so people can just pick it up and use it without a manual. And, for those who still don't understand, Apple has employees waiting in each Apple store to teach you how to use any one of its products. Right from the start, Apple has given extensive guides (and rules) to developers on how to best design apps to fit into the iOS UI concepts. And, for those who don't follow the rules, Apple has a review process that has been known to reject apps for not looking right.
Google wouldn't go that far, but giving explanations of its design philosophies seems like it should be part of the "openness" that Google loves to talk about so much. Of course, before Matias Duarte showed up, one could argue that Google didn't really have design philosophies to explain. However, that doesn't forgive the fact that many people still find Android to be too complicated or not intuitive enough. Ice Cream Sandwich is a big step in the right direction though. Rather than hidden options like the recent apps menu mapped to the long-press of the home button, which casual users may never find without help, there is a dedicated button. Rather than things hidden in menus and submenus, Google added the Action Bar which changes contextually to give you the options you're likely to need.
Google has never been good at explaining its products to people, hence the untimely demise of many of its products, and that has even come through in some of its marketing campaigns, like the [ برای مشاهده لینک ، با نام کاربری خود وارد شوید یا ثبت نام کنید ] , which doesn't help anyone find or figure out Google+ at all. ICS is making Android more accessible, and the Style Guide will help make the UI across apps more consistent, which will help users, but building a proper Android guide would be a pretty big help as well. None of the changes and additions are going to help people who pick up an Android 2.x device and have trouble getting into it, nor will some of the new features help Android 4.0 users if developers don't implement the new option, but that's what brings us to the second building block in this process:
Building block #2: Consistency & Norms
This is the whole name of the game for Google these days. Google products across the web have gotten redesigns to make the UI more consistent. Android 4.0 got a complete UI overhaul to make it more consistent with the Roboto font, side-to-side swiping gestures throughout the system, the Action Bar, and multiple pane views; but, the biggest piece for consistency has been the There has been big news surrounding the Holo theme, and it has been relatively misunderstood.
Yes, Google has actually set down one mandate, which is that the Holo theme must exist on any device running Android 4.0, but that is all. Manufacturers are not required to use it in custom UIs, and app developers are not required to use it in apps either. However, just like the new Style Guide, app developers are encouraged to use it, and if they do, the requirement will mean that apps will look and behave consistently across devices.

The question is whether or not all of these carrots that Google keeps dangling in front of manufacturers and developers will pay off. With its web products, there are no troubles, because Google controls the entire experience, but that's not possible with Android. It seems that Google's plan is to not just lead by example in this case, but create something akin to societal norms or market pressures within Android. Norms can be far more effective than rules in society. For example, there are no laws against acting like a jerk or being rude to people all the time, but most people are nice to each other because it makes society run better (of course this societal norm has yet to translate to Internet forums and comment sections...) The same theory could end up working with Android. One of the most interesting sections of the new Style Guide is the "Pure Android" section, which reminds developers that Android has a specific look to it, and UI should not copy that of other platforms. The section shows the difference between Android-styled buttons (as you can see on the right), text boxes, buttons and layout, and urges developers to not carry-over styles from other platforms.
There are no rules saying you can't copy the style of other platforms, that you must follow any of the the suggestions in the Style Guide, employ any of the built-in consistency features in Android, or that you have to use the Holo theme. But, if enough developers do employ those tools, it will make apps stick out when they don't follow the suit, and not in a good way. Imagine you were using a newspaper app with multiple sections, but instead of using the swipe gestures to navigate the different sections, that navigation was buried in a menu. Users wouldn't like that. Or, if apps all began to move the menu button to the top right of the screen, where Google would prefer it to be placed, users would be put off and slightly annoyed when an app didn't. Creating those norms eventually creates a self-propagating system of consistency. Matias himself is hopeful that this Style Guide will even help manufacturers to build better custom UI overlays that fit better in the Android ecosystem, but we'll have to wait and see how that works out.

Of course, Google itself needs to be more consistent before the rest of the ecosystem can follow. For example, the menu button that we just mentioned isn't even found in the same spot in all Google apps. Some, like Google Voice, Talk, Plus, and YouTube have it in the top right. Gmail and Maps have it on the Action Bar at the bottom. Goggles, Blogger, Music and Shopper have it next to the recent apps button (which actually means that it is still coded to be tied to a capacitive menu button from an Android 2.x device). And, oddest of all, the Google Docs app has it both in the top right and next to the recent apps button. In terms of leading by example, Google is not doing so well in this regard.
A big hurdle for creating this culture of consistency within Android is for Google to employ some big name developers to help take the lead. This is another place where Apple has a big lead. Any time there is an iOS announcement, Apple has a slew of developers from all different app categories to help show off the way Apple wants things done. This helps to reinforce the rules set out for consistency in the OS, but it also adds value to the ecosystem. There may be about an equal number of apps on iOS compared to Android, and the apps at the top level may be pretty much equal as far as design, but it's the lower levels where we find the biggest differences. Of course, Apple mandates consistency, but Google needs to have partners to help enforce its norms. Not to mention, having big name developers on board will make people more excited about any platform.
Building block #3: Advocacy & Identity
Having better and more public relationships with developers doesn't just add value by giving the platform better software, and reinforcing the platform norms, it gives Google more visibility in the market. Google is beginning to learn that it needs to have a face, and can't just be this monolithic company filled with anti-social engineers. Google+ has gone a long way to helping give a face to the company with people getting to know Vic Gundotra (SVP engineering) who has an odd love of pop music, Matt Cutts (head of web spam team), Bradley Horowitz (VP product management for G+), Natalie Villalobos (community manager G+), and many other Googlers.

As far as Android design advocacy, quite naturally it seems that job is squarely on Matias Duarte, as he is the head of Android design. At least, the job falls to Matias as far as getting the word out to media outlets that Google is putting these suggestions and tools in place, but Google still needs to leverage whatever relationships it has with developers to actually see the the tools and guidelines put into regular use.
To that point, it seems like it would have been better for Google to have had this Style Guide ready to be part of the Ice Cream Sandwich unveiling Matias Duarte even said in the recent interview about the new Style Guide with The Verge that he didn't consider the OS to be complete until the Style Guide was out, and that even now the guide isn't really complete with all of the information that designers would like. But, this goes beyond just creating guidelines, because while this is explaining the framework for the Android style and how to easily implement UI choices so your app will better adapt to the variety of screen sizes, resolutions and aspect ratios, this also pushes towards creating a more complete Android identity.
Until now, Google hasn't had a design or style identity, and neither has Android. Because of that, UI has been haphazard and inconsistent. The company is finally making a concerted effort to change that, but it still needs to get the word out to the community that this is what Google expects Android to look like, and more importantly, the community has to buy into that design.
In a way, it's almost better that Google waited until now to put out a Style Guide for Android, because a guide for earlier versions of Android may have helped developers to format apps better, but it wouldn't have really held much as far as style and identity. Android has always been something of a blank slate upon which manufacturers put custom UIs, and users put launcher alternatives and themes. Ice Cream Sandwich is the first time Android has felt cohesive. It's the first time the platform has felt like it has an identity of its own that also connects to the Google mothership. Matias has said that he believes designers adamantly want this Style Guide, and we hope that's true, because a more cohesive and consistent Android experience can only be a good thing for users.
Conclusion
Ultimately, this push by Google is about not accepting the norm. For a number of reasons, the norm for Android had been to ignore design, style and consistency in favor of functionality and options. The biggest trouble in this is that when you start to accept somethng as a norm, you may stop seeing how to make it better. It had become commonplace for users and developers to just take it as the status quo that Android apps didn't really have an underlying consistency. Many chalked it up to the uniqueness of the platform, but really, although we don't agree with the semantics, the lack of a Style Guide was one of the biggest causes of "fragmentation" on the platform. Apps can exist on multiple platforms and be true to their brands while still feeling like an integrated piece of each platform. As our Androidified version of Matias as the article image - and the Android logo in general - shows, brand identity doesn't have to preclude uniqueness. If nothing else, Windows Phone has proven that, because it has a unique visual style, and has many multiplatform apps that look unique while still retaining the brand identity.
It will be nice to see if the the Android ecosystem can finally achieve that brand identity. We're not sure how successful brand identity can be when the lockscreen and homescreen for each manufacturer's device looks different, but if Matias has his way, this Style Guide will influence even those custom manufacturer UIs. It's a pretty dream that Matias has of differentiated Android devices, which still retain an essential Android brand identity, but it remains to be seen whether manufacturers share that vision. It is in the best interest of manufacturers to adjust their custom UIs to fit Matias's vision, because an Android identity would mean that consumers can learn what to expect when handling an Android device, making each device easier to pick up and use regardless of the manufacturer skin. Who knows, maybe it'll lead to the day when a relatively non-tech savvy consumer can walk into a store and not have Android described to them as "like an iPhone."
"The Woz" says Android better than iOS in some ways
Steve Wozniak, [ برای مشاهده لینک ، با نام کاربری خود وارد شوید یا ثبت نام کنید ] and long-time guru for all things Mac, expressed admiration and even envy over some parts of Android he thinks are better than the iOS experience on Apple’s iPhone. Speaking to the Daily Beast, Woz indicated that the iPhone was [ برای مشاهده لینک ، با نام کاربری خود وارد شوید یا ثبت نام کنید ] , because he “loves the beauty of it”, but that he wishes it could do many of the things that his Android phone does.
Woz made headlines in late 2011 by picking up a Galaxy Nexus [ برای مشاهده لینک ، با نام کاربری خود وارد شوید یا ثبت نام کنید ] , but apparently has settled on the Droid RAZR as his Android handset of choice. For staunch fans of all things Apple it may sound like blasphemy coming from Woz, but he says that along side Android’s extra complexity comes a lot of superior implementations.
Some items may come as no surprise to long-time readers of PA; for example Woz prefers the turn by turn navigation that Google has implemented on Android. He also cited the recent battery problems that many have complained about on the iPhone 4S as a negative. But one of his biggest gripes may surprise you: Woz doesn’t like
He says he was a big fan of the predecessor app when it was separately available in the App Store. But ever since Apple bought it out and integrated it into the iPhone 4S, he says the results are significantly worse. According to Woz:
“I used to ask Siri, ‘What are the five biggest lakes in California?’ and it would come back with the answer. Now it just misses. It gives me real estate listings. I used to ask, ‘What are the prime numbers greater than 87?’ and it would answer. Now instead of getting prime numbers, I get listings for prime rib, or prime real estate.”
He also dislikes it being connected to Apple’s backend servers. He says he frequently finds that Siri can’t connect, robbing him of simple voice controls like asking the phone to dial his wife. He says the voice controls on Android never have this problem, since they control the phone without having to contract a server. He also indicated that voice search on Android now returns better results than Siri does, saying “that really bothers me.”
The Woz wasn’t endorsing Android as superior to iOS – he says in particular that people who want an intuitive device, or dislike computers in general, should choose the iPhone, which he still feels is the best all-around smartphone on the market. But the respect Wozniak has for Android and Andy Rubin’s team is an excellent reminder that right now there isn’t a mobile OS that is head and shoulders above all the others, what it comes down to is what you want to get out of your phone.

The analysts from Nielsen just published their report on the US smartphone market in the last quarter of 2011 and the numbers that it contains are hardly shocking. 2011 :Nielsen sums up Q4: iOS leaps forward, but Android still leads
The iPhone 4S launch helped iOS gain a lot of ground and close the gap on Android. The two leading platforms were neck and neck in December, when most of the sales were generated. Windows Phone was the only other platform to improve its market position, but the Microsoft OS is still far from becoming a major factor in the US smartphone race.
Android accounted for 51.7% of all smartphone purchases in Q4, but its share in November and December dropped to 48.7% and 46.9%, due to the strong iPhone sales. The Apple platform had a market share of 44.5% in December, which is nearly double what it had in October (25.1%). The overall iOS share for the quarter stood at 37%.

The Nielsen Q4 report
Meanwhile, RIM continues its struggles and only managed a market share of 6% in the final quarter of the year. The Canadians had a share of 7.7% in October, but looking at the stats - it's all downhill from there.
Windows Phone powered 1.4% of the smartphones sold in the Holiday quarter, which is an improvement compared to the 1.3% overall market share that it has.
Another trend that Nielsen noticed is that more and more US citizens are switching to smartphones. While just 46% of all users have a smartphone, 60% of those that got a new phone in Q4 opted for one with a proper OS.
