GAMEPLAY
DEVELOPER'S NOTE: Nothing was more important to us this year than realism and authenticity. From major additions like Pro-Tak to minor improvements like new QB ratings, we focused our year on creating the most realistic and fun version of Madden NFL in its 21 year history. Hopefully the list below gives a glimpse into the large volume of work we spent on making this game truly different and new.
1. Pro-Tak Animation System (procedural animation steering, branching, & real-time manipulation):
o Up to 9 man gang tackles - Anywhere from 3 to 9 players can engage in a gang tackle on a ball carrier. Defenders can add on to the pile to take a ball carrier down, while offensive players can add on to drive the pile up field.
o Players are able to break out of the gang tackles. Users can attempt to break out by using Highlight Stick.
o How long the gang-tackle stays up is dependent on the abilities of the ball carrier. Strong, Trucker type ball carriers stay up longer.
o Players can run up and knock over a gang tackle in progress. Users are able to knock the pile over using Hit Stick.
o If the ball carrier's forward progress is stopped but he hasn't been taken down to the ground yet, the officials will blow the play dead just like they do in real life games.
2. Interactive "Fight for the Fumble" Pile-Ups:
o A loose ball underneath the pile is now live as players can fight for the fumble through a new rapid button press mini-game. Mash the button displayed on the meter to battle for possession of the ball.
o The difficulty is tied directly to the skill level so on All-Madden expect a furious battle and a pretty easy go at things on Rookie.
3. QB Pressure Alert - The controller will rumble when a defender gets near you while your QB is in the pocket.
4. Brand new AI playcalling system - New and improved AI logic makes playing the CPU a much more authentic experience. CPU teams mimic their real life counterparts, matching exact percentages run from the 2008 season.
5. New Ratings Philosophy - Huge spread of ratings across the board to make all players more accurately play like themselves.
6. Animation Makeover - Removal and replacement of nearly 1000 animations. So long super-leaping swats and repetitive facemask tackles.
7. Signature Animations -
o Nearly every starting QB has a custom stance and throwing style
o 30 kickers have a custom stance
8. Defensive ‘Lockdown' System - Assign the best defenders to cover the offense's best receivers regardless of where they line up in a formation.
9. Injury System -
o All new system to allow players to play hurt and allow you the gamer to make selections on when to keep players in or take them out. Players playing hurt are then susceptible to a much more serious injury.
o Trainers come on the field to help off players and the injury cart can even make an appearance to get hurt players off the field and into the locker room.
10. All New QB Ratings -
o Short/Medium/Deep Accuracy - splitting up of accuracy rating so as to more realistically the strengths and weaknesses of real life QB's .
o Throw on the Run - Make sure you are aware of your QB's Throw on the Run rating if you like to throw passes while scrambling. If you have a lower rating in this category, the more likely you will throw an inaccurate pass.
o Play Action - The ability to make the defense think it's a run can help your receivers get open on pass routes. The new Play Action rating will affect how long the defense bites on the play action.
11. All new blocking system & animations -
o More realistic pocket formation
o Special moves / block shedding all controlled by intuitive R-Stick control
12. All new WR/DB interaction -
o Good defensive backs will "jostle" and use their body for positioning on deep routes against wide receivers, ensuring it's no longer an uncontested footrace to the endzone.
o Usage of all new defensive cut moves ensures that defenders will now play man coverage realistically based on their ratings. Defensive players will react (or get faked out) and cut realistically
13. QB Avoidance - When your QB is in the pocket you can do evasive maneuvers (back, forward, left, or right) to shake off sack attempts.
14. Throw out of sacks - Layered blending system allows the QB to get rid of the ball even while being hit (often causing a wounded duck throw)
15. Accelerated Clock - Use the Accelerated Clock option to speed up your games. The Play Clock will wind down 15, 20 or 25 seconds after you call your play.
16. Off Target Shotgun Snaps - Shotgun snaps can now be low, high, to the right or left of the QB, reflecting the possible errors that occur with real Shotgun snaps.
17. Shotgun Handoff Animations - New shotgun handoffs for outside runs that actually have the running back running to the outside instead of going to the inside like Shotgun Draw plays. New Wildcat handoffs were also added out of the shotgun as well.
18. Receiver Sideline Recognition - Receivers will automatically slow down as they near the sideline to try and stay in bounds for the reception if the ball is thrown their way.
19. New Catch Animations - Full Extension Catches and Over the shoulder basket catches have been added.
20. New Defensive Hot Route Logic - Users can now make a player Hook Zone anywhere on the field they so desire. The Deep Zone Hot Route makes a player drop straight back.
21. Fatigue revamp - Fatigue has been retuned so players get subbed out more like real life. 8 varying levels of fatigue are also displayed in the play call screen (instead of just red, yellow, green)
22. FG Kicking Accuracy - Accuracy has been re-tuned to distinguish the elite kickers from the average ones, and has also been made to be more difficult for the users on higher difficulty levels.
23. QB Sneak - A new QB sneak animation has been added to better emulate what happens in real life on a QB sneak play.
24. Deep Zone Drop Tuning - The safeties will now take a new and more realistic angle on their zone drops to help them get into better position.
25. Defense Man Alignment - New man coverage alignment logic eliminates overlapping defenders
26. CPU Passing Logic - Passing logic has been improved to force the CPU to hold the ball longer and attempt deeper passes in the right situations.
27. CPU play calling - Major overhaul in order to get the CPU to match the type of plays used by their real-life counterparts.
28. Weather Effects - Players slip and fall in bad weather - QB's setting up, receivers running routes, ball carriers trying to cut, etc.
29. Wrap Swats - As soon as a receiver gets his hands on the ball a defender with good coverage ratings will attempt to bat it out of his hands.
30. New Mid Air Collisions - All new (more realistic) mid air collisions have been added for defenders to pull the ball out as a receiver leaps to catch it.
31. Ball Carrier & Non-Ball Carrier momentum -
o New cut moves have added to give Ball Carrier and Non-Ball Carrier movement a much more realistic look and feel.
o New Jukes and Spins - New Juke and Spin animations have been added. Users can also do different Jukes and Spins depending on whether they are sprinting or not.
32. Pursuit - New pursuit logic has been added to improve the angles that the CPU defenders will take when chasing a ball carrier.
33. Adaptive AI - The CPU will now adapt to your playing style and make changes accordingly. If you are pounding them with an inside run, look for the defensive line to pinch inside and the linebackers to crash more. If you are hurting them with the pass or a certain route, the defense will adjust it's coverages to take that away.
34. New Sliders -
o Game Speed Slider- Play the game at the speed that feels most comfortable to you with the Game Speed Slider.
o Player Speed Slider- Decrease or widen the gap of players' speed by adjusting the Player Speed Slider
o Injury/Fatigue- Instead of on/off, now these values can be tuned by you the user
35. Defensive Move Assist - If you are having trouble getting into position to make a tackle, use the Defensive Move Assist (hold the A button on Xbox 360 / X on PS3) to put your user-controlled player in the best position to make a play.
36. Tipped balls at the line - More accurate physics on balls that are tipped at the line of scrimmage will give defenders a chance to make a play on the ball.
37. New penalties -
o Support for illegal forward passes and late hits out of bounds
o All new referee audio and better animations as well as crowd reactions to the penalties
38. Playbooks -
o The Wildcat is here and better than ever in Madden NFL 10. Select brand new formations and plays spread out through various team playbooks to give your opponent a different look on offense.
o Over 35 new formations and 1000 new plays based directly on real life NFL footage. Deepest and most authentic playbooks yet.

FRANCHISE MODE
DEVELOPER'S NOTE: Franchise Mode to us is our bread-and-butter. Over the past few years it had not received the amount of improvements we wanted, so our focus this year was really on fixing the foundation and ensuring that the mode a) made more user-friendly, b) had in depth logic that was bug free, and c) told a story of a journey through the season.
1. The Extra Point Highlight Show - An all-new new way to keep track of everything going on in your Franchise. Alex Flanagan and Fran Charles keep you up to date on big games, players of the week and the playoff picture in a weekly broadcast-style recap show.
2. The Franchise Hub - A new interface in Franchise Mode. Quickly sim or play each week by pressing Start, or check out the latest news on the right hand side of the screen. All of the week's information is at your fingertips...from the weather in the stadium to the opponent you are matching up against.
3. Variable & Dynamic In-Game Presentation - From the USAF Thunderbirds flying over the Super Bowl as the Star Spangled Banner plays, to the coach getting soaked by the water bucket when you clinch a playoff spot, all the big moments are accentuated in Madden NFL 10.
4. Custom Draft Classes - Over 8,000 hand created rookies for Draft classes make the draft more important than ever. This year you'll find busts drafted #1 overall and sleepers drafted at the end of the 7th round.
5. All New CPU Logic -
o Completely revamped NFL Draft logic makes the Draft the most realistic ever
o New, tougher trade logic ensures you can't pull a fast one over on the CPU-controlled coaches
o Hall of Fame logic now only elects the best of the best. No more Brad Johnsons in the Hall of Fame.
6. Free Agency Logic Revitalization - Free Agents now take into account multiple factors in the offseason such as the team's depth chart and the talent on the roster. Those factors have a significant impact on which team they'll sign with.
7. New scheduling logic - Fixes various issues (no more issues of 5 straight home games for a team in year two and beyond).
8. Elite Coach Boost - Elite coaches like Dick Lebeau (Pittsburgh Steelers D Coordinator) now give large boosts to their area of the team, in-game and while simulating. For example, the Steelers pass rush will be just as hard to stop in Franchise Mode as it is in real life.
9. New Rookie Scouting System - Allows you to unlock a player's potential and their key attributes. Combine those and use them to unearth the sleepers late in the draft.
10. Contract Revamp - Contracts have been changed to better reflect the deals players sign in the real NFL. Good players in the 80-89 overall range will require more money than they have in the past. Salary Cap logic (and cap room) has been tuned so that it's more of a challenge each year to stay under the cap.
11. Player Progression - Progression (and regression) have both been revitalized for franchise mode this year. Players now progress more when they are younger while older players start to wear down as their careers continue. A player's potential now helps dictate how good they'll become.
12. Injury Frequency - We increased the number of injuries each week in the simulation to match what teams deal with in the real NFL.
13. New Training Staff system - Allows you to hire a specialist that can boost one aspect of your team. Hire a staff that prevents injuries or go with the staff that can increase your QB's arm strength.
14. Statistical Perfection - Simulated statistics are more realistic than ever this year as they've undergone a complete overhaul.
15. Be an NFL Superstar - Become the best of the best as the ultimate NFL Superstar. We've streamlined NFL Superstar to allow you to focus on what really matters...playing each week's matchup and becoming an elite player. You're no longer required to practice 5 days a week or run the 40 yard dash over and over. Get on the field and become one of the top players in the NFL!
