Samsung's eight-core processor will ship in 30 percent of Galaxy S4 handsets
Chip falls victim to performance issues
KOREAN PHONE MAKER Samsung's Exynos 5 Octa eight-core processor will ship on just 30 percent of Galaxy S4 handsets.Samsung has been keen to talk up the fact that its flagship Samsung Galaxy S4 handset, due to be released on 26 April, will be the first octo-core smartphone on the market thanks to the inclusion of its Exynos 5 Octa eight-core chip. However, Korean news outlet ETNews is reporting that just 30 percent of Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphones will ship with the eight-core chip, while 70 percent will ship with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 quad-core 1.9GHz chip instead.Samsung's LSI division, responsible for the eight-core CPU, is supposedly to blame. If certain industry sources are to be believed, the division has failed to fix performance issues in the Exynos 5 chip, which has also fallen victim to unspecified "design errors". Apparently because of these problems, 70 percent of the first 10 million Galaxy S4s sold will ship without the it.ETNews added that Samsung is working on resolving the issues but it's unclear when this will be finished. It's also unclear whether these problems will lead to Galaxy S4 delays in certain parts of the world, but Samsung has yet to confirm this.Of course, this isn't terrible news for Galaxy S4 buyers here in the UK, as Samsung has already revealed that we'll be getting the quad-core version anyway, due to the Exynos 5 Octa chip's lack of support for 4G connectivity. However it's bad news for other Galaxy S4 buyers around the globe who wanted to boast that they had the world's first eight-core smartphone - although, in reality, most won't notice much difference in processing power. We've contacted Samsung for comment, but have not heard back at the time of publication. µ

Samsung Galaxy S4: Up to 70 percent will use Snapdragon 600 processor 70 percent of Samsung Galaxy S4s will use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chipset, while Exynos 5 devices are reserved for Africa, Asia and Europe
Around 70 percent of Samsung’s initial run of Galaxy S4 handsets will carry Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 600 processor, following alleged production issues with the company’s 8-core Exynos 5 Octa setup. The Galaxy S4 will be shipping in two varieties: one carrying Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 600, the other Samsung’s 8-core Exynos 5 Octa. Reports suggest Qualcomm’s chipset is more cost-effective and better equipped for LTE.Regions with limited LTE like Asia, Africa, and parts of Europe will receive the 8-core Exynos 5 version of the handset once it gets released in April, according to sources inside Korea. The UK is believed to be getting both the Snapdragon 600 and Exynos 5 Octa versions at some point, although Samsung has only confirmed the former so far.The Exynos 5 Octa chipset will enter mass production in Q2 this year, according to Samsung, meaning it’s likely to become more prevalent and widely available during Q3 2013.And if you’re worried about performance disparities between the two versions, you really shouldn’t be. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 600 chipset has already been shown to be one of the fastest most power-efficient setups around. The Exynos 5 Octa has more cores than Qualcomm’s setup but that’s not what matters – it’s ARM’s big.LITTLE technology that will apparently set Samsung’s Exynos 5 apart from the crowd. The Exynos 5 Octa, thanks to ARM’s new architecture, is expected to be more power efficient than standard mobile processors. We’ve yet to put these claims to the test, but look forward to finding out how it performs soon.Interested in chips? he Samsung Galaxy S4 was set to become the first smartphone with an eight-core processor in the UK but now it looks like most of the world will be getting a quad-core offeringOnly 30 per cent of Samsung Galaxy S4 smartphones on launch will feature the new Exynos 5 Octa eight-core processor that Samsung hailed as being their most powerful mobile chip yet.Apparently the company has been unable to produce enough of the next-generation chips in time for the launch of the S4 and any delays in release would risk them losing ground to the HTC One and even Apple when they launch the next iPhone later this year.Instead the majority of handsets will be getting a still powerful 1.9GHz quad-core Snapdragon processor which had already been slated for the US market. While on a performance level it could be difficult to notice a real difference between the two, one of the main advantages with the new Exynos 5 Octa chip is its power-management abilities which will reportedly improve battery life. With Apple now looking to take even more market share with the iPhone 6, Samsung will no doubt be aiming to release an improved version of the S4 featuring the eight-core processor later in the year.

Samsung Exynos 5 Octa does support LTE, so why isn't it in our Galaxy S4?Chip shortages to blame?
Western variants of the S4 will 'only' pack a quad-core processorAt its Galaxy S4 launch event a couple of weeks back, Samsung somewhat glossed over the new handset's octo-core processor, despite it being a world-first for a smartphone. We would soon find out why.In the aftermath of the Broadway extravaganza, the company revealed that the US and UK, would miss out on the Exynos 5 Octa S4 and would have to settle for quad-core - albeit much improved quad-core.Most observers had assumed it was to ensure Brits and Yanks, among others, had a faster phone, but also access to the faster internet too, as the LTE version of the device runs a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip. However, in a post on its @SamsungExynos Twitter feed late on Thursday, the company confirmed that the new Exynos 5 does support LTE on all frequencies. The tweet reads: "Update: The Exynos 5 Octa supports LTE and all 20 bands." So what gives, Samsung?Supply shortage?Confirmation that LTE support is not a factor seems to suggest that its a supply issue preventing the Exynos 5 Octa going global on the S4 handset. This remains unconfirmed but would represent somewhat of a failure on Samsung's part to get all their ducks in row before the Galaxy S4 goes on sale on April 26.It does mean that an eight-core Galaxy S4 variant could potentially be rolled out once Samsung amps-up production of the processor, but the company is staying mum on that too.The perceived benefits of the Octa 5 processor are efficiency rather than speed. The tech is built on ARM's big.LITTLE framework, meaning there are four cores for handling the power-sapping activities and four for handling the phone's mundane tasks, which will result in smoother performance and better battery life.Octo-core? Quad-core? Does it matter to you? Let us know in the comments below.Via GSMArena

Samsung confirms LTE support on the Exynos 5 Octa processor
Through its Twitter account, Samsung confirmed that the Exynos 5 Octa processor is indeed fully capable of connecting to an LTE network. The Korean giant's latest silicon supports all LTE bands.
This announcement essentially confirms that LTE connectivity was not a factor in Samsung's decision to offer the its Galaxy S4 flasghip with Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 and Exynos 5 Octa processor options. Instead, it is the latter's short supply, which leads to the current arrangement. The LTE capability of the Samsung Exynos 5 Octa doesn't guarantee that every Samsung Galaxy S4 sporting the chipset will be capable of 4G connectivity. Samsung is yet to comment further on this matter.Source | Via
