is to be believed then we expect it to release three unannounced phones in Q2 2012, the LT22i Nypon, MT27i Pepper and ST25i Kumquat. We would therefore expect these three phones to be formally announced by Sony (Ericsson) at

next month. Sony has not hid the fact that its Iconic Identity design trait will be seen in more than just the Xperia S. The leaked picture of the LT22i Nypon suggested its design would follow in the same footsteps We’ve now come across the first picture of what is believed to be the ST25i ‘Kumquat’. As you can tell it also carries the Iconic Identity design, with the transparent notification strip at the bottom of the phone.
It looks so similar in fact that it took us a long time to convince ourselves we were looking at a different phone. The main clue was the screen resolution of the handset. Compare the picture below to that of the

and you’ll notice the three icons on the top right of the handset (time, battery and network icons) are taking up more room compared to the Sony Ericsson logo on the top of the handset. The LT22i Nypon is rumoured to come with qHD resolution (540 x 960) versus FWGA resolution (480 x 854) of the ST25i Kumquat. The handset also looks narrower than the previous leaks, reminding us of the 3.3-inch Xperia ray.

to have a 3.5-inch display, 1GHz dual-core processor and 5MP camera.
Sony announces new 8 and 13MP sensors with HDR video support
Today, Sony announced that it's working on a couple of new image sensors for use in smartphones and other portable devices.
The sensors use a new RGBW matrix, which adds a white pixel to the usual RGB layout, aiming to improve light sensitivity and, in turn, low-light performance. Sony says that while the addition of white pixel normally has a degrading effect on image quality, here they have found a workaround with their new processing algorithms.

The new Sony sensors enable the creation of movies with High Dynamic Range (HDR). That would allow you to capture higher quality footage in high contrast situations, as demonstrated in the following video.
Sony plans to release three mobile sensors, utilizing this new technology this year. An 8 megapixel one, measuring 1/4" in diagonal is planned to start sampling in March, but that one won't have the HDR movie support.
The first proper RGBW Sony sensor should measure 1/3.06" and should come in June. Its effective resolution will be 13 megapixels.
Finally, an 8 megapixel 1/4" sensor
with the HDR movie support will be developed by August this year.
So, we probably won't see actual smartphones with the new sensors by the end of the year, but here's hoping that the waiting will be worth it.

Sony Ericsson confirms GLONASS navigation support for new Xperia range

The Sony Ericsson developer team has confirmed that both the Xperia S and Xperia ion handsets will support the GLONASS navigational system. In fact, it appears that some of the
2011 Xperia range
(Xperia arc, Xperia arc S, Xperia ray, Xperia neo, Xperia pro, Xperia PLAY, Xperia active and Live with Walkman) also have GLONASS support with the latest software update. So what is GLONASS exactly? Think of it as the Russian version of the US-controlled Global Positioning System (GPS). If a handset supports both GPS and GLONASS receivers then it has access to a greater number of satellites it can latch onto, improving tracking accuracy in the process.
The Global Positioning System currently has 31 active satellites transmitting signals, whilst GLONASS has 24 active satellites. Therefore, having access to both systems gives you access to 55 satellites overall. This should in theory give you greater accuracy, with both systems complementing each other. From Sony Ericsson’s own research, they found that position accuracy increased by 50% when using GLONASS in addition to GPS.
This all sounds great, but we imagine it would have an obvious hit on battery life as you are activating two receivers instead of one. To combat this, SE says that the GLONASS receiver is only activated in challenging environments such as urban environments with high rise buildings. It’s great to know that the older 2011 Xperia handsets also have GLONASS support, as well as the newly announced handsets.

Find out what’s new and what’s next!” is the strap line so it’s pretty much a given that we will some new Xperia handsets being launched.

For those who like to try different custom ROMs, having a recovery in place is essential. The whole process has been made much easier for the 2011 Xperia line-up thanks to a ClockworkMod Recovery auto-installer that was created by xda-developer members pvyParts & nobodyAtall. The great thing about this solution is that CWM will install onto the system partition which means you can even use it with a locked bootloader. pvyParts says that the app should work with the 2011 Xperia line-up but also explicitly lists supported phones as the Xperia arc, arc S, mini, mini pro, active, neo and PLAY (mixed reports of this working on the PLAY). The guys at Phones 4u have published a humorous camera shootout between the upcoming Sony Xperia S and three major competitors including the Apple iPhone 4S, Samsung Galaxy S II and Nokia Lumia 800. This is not a comparison in the traditional sense i.e. you won’t find camera samples to pore over in detail. Sony officially completes full acquisition of Sony Ericsson
