With 3ds Max and Maya under the same roof, it’s been impossible not to speculate about future developments. But based on the evidence of the current state of the upgrade art, the two packages are continuing to head in previously set directions. Not only is there minimal integration between them, but there’s also no bundle pricing, so you’ll have to pay full price for both.
This unadventurous upgrade offers some speed improvements, streamlining and a small selection of extra features. But generally you won’t be using this release wondering at the new effects, so much as learning to work faster with tools you already know.
Most obviously, mental ray has been given a once-over. The lighting options have been simplified – now you just pick a quality preset from a drop-down menu. Also included is an updated daylight lighting model to match date and time of day. This might seem gimmicky, but it’s easier to work with and to keyframe than the previous more arbitrary system.
Two new shaders have improved output quality. A car paint shader offers metallic paint effects, but you could have put this together yourself using shader combinations in previous versions. It’s useful to have in your shader list, though, and it looks good. Essentially it’s a special effect more or less limited to cars and animated figures. More useful is the new architectural shader, which adds features such as rounded corners and accurate reflections. The rounded corners effect may not sound impressive, but it produces models without the traditional sharp-edged feel of digital renders.
The Hair tool has also had a makeover, ensuring it’s easier to create digital transformations. And having been integrated into the rest of 3ds Max, there’s no longer any need to launch the Hair Editor as a separate application. It’s easier and faster to work with, and makes hair follow the same physics rules as other elements within a scene.
The mesh modeller has been enhanced with a new tool called ProBooleans. This can add, subtract, merge and intersect meshes with intelligent optimisation. ProCutter is a related tool, which makes it simple to shatter and reassemble mesh geometry for explosion effects.
The remaining features are a grab-bag of fairly minor changes. Possibly the most important is that 64-bit support has arrived, so you can now run under Win X64 on PCs to increase the memory limit above the usual 2GB. There’s currently no word on Vista compatibility.
Code-twiddlers will appreciate the enhancements to the SDK, and the closer relationship between MAXScript and .NET controls. And anyone who has ever wanted to run 3ds Max from the command line will welcome the fact that this is now possible, making batch processing and rendering easier than ever.
3ds Max 8 and earlier plug-ins will need to be recompiled to work with v9, which will disappoint those with large plug-in collections.
