A wireless nic can be quite beneficial for both the performers and technical crew. To put it simply, using wireless microphones allows you to do the following:
1. Freedom to move about for the artist or speaker. It's really quite inconvenient for talents to drag around long wires when they're out performing on stage. Going wireless allows them to roam around and do antics and things that might help their overall performance.
2. Minimizes wire and cable problems common in wired microphones.
The first wireless nic came out in the market way back in 1962. This first model was called "transistophone" and was invented by Hung C. Lin. The quality of the sound of the microphones has changed over the years owing to the developments in audio technology.
Wireless microphones work by converting sound and transmitting them as radio frequencies or signals through either an internal or external antenna. Usually these transmitters are located at the bottom of the mic. In the case of external antennas, you can see them as small protruding rods at the bottom of the microphone and needs to kept straight to avoid degrading the signal.
When the conditions and the environment are right, wireless mics are able to transmit signals in a 300-meter radius area. However, if obstructions like metal structures or objects are present, the distance is greatly reduced to only 75 meters or less. Standard frequencies and forms of signal transmissions in wireless microphones include:
1. UHF
2. VHF
3. FM
4. AM
5. Infrared light
Wireless nic can be subdivided into two categories, the self-contained unit and the two-piece unit. A self-contained unit means that all the parts of the mic, which includes the transmitter, battery, and antenna, is part of the microphone housing. Meanwhile, a two-piece unit has the mic and the transmitter separated allowing the user to attach the transmitter unit practically anywhere comfortable.
When you buy your wireless nic it would be best to think well and consider the situations where you will be using your microphone:
1. For outdoor use, it would be best to rely on a more rugged and reliable model. You need a model that can handle outdoor live performance and travel.
2. You should also consider if the microphone is comfortable and easy to hold for performers and speakers.
3. Ask your store assistants about the microphone's good resistance to feedback.
4. Another thing to consider is if the microphone can handle high sound pressure levels or SPL.
