(Pluggedin, not charginfg)

Hi. I'll get straight to it.
I've had my Studio XPS 1640 since April, 2009. Since then, I've had FOUR adapters for it, the original, one in July, December, and one just day before yesterday. I'm a layman at this, so I'll try to explain
to my best. The first time, I think it fused or something, because it overheated. The second, third and fourth, both stopped working randomly. What actually happens is, my Power Options show that it is
'Plugged in, Not Charging'. Of course, I followed the basic steps to try and get it fixed- Updated BIOS, checked my battery, used an alternate charger, and so on. Yesterday, I finally found out what the
problem is- the adapter's flimsy center pin, the one that I connect to the laptop's port, snaps off if I'm not 100% cautious about it. I just got my 4th charger day before yesterday, and last night, the fourth
pin snapped off.
I could very well call Dell Support, and get my adapter changed AGAIN under warranty, but I'm looking for a more permanent solution to this. If there is one, please enlighten me. I hope someone out
there can help.
Not-so-many Cheers,
A VERY dissatisfied Studio XPS user
-------------------------------
I've only had my new XPS 1640 for a couple weeks and the other day when I booted up I got the message "AC Adapter not recognized...." and the battery will no longer charge. The power monitor in
the bottom right toolbar says "plugged in, not charging".
Laptop runs fine off of AC but battery isn't charging and is slowly depleting.
Any ideas??????
I've read some posts about this happening to some older Inspiron systems that are a couple years old, but nothing about new systems.
I've already been sent a new AC adapter and that wasn't the problem......still says the same message.
--------------------------------
This is *sort of* similar to what happened to me, on my 1530~!
The battery wouldn't hold a charge...I called XPS support. They had me check the adapter from the wall outlet > to the brick > to the adapter > to the socket in the lappy. The brick stayed *positive*.
Then they had me check the battery itself. Not working...It just would not hold a charge. The adapter was a bit loose inside the socket!! another !!
So, Dell sent the on-site techn. to my house and they replaced my Motherboard, along with bringing me a new brick and adapter.
(I had figured that the internal *socket* was loose and needed some soldering & the technician also agreed) But the easiest way was to just replace the Motherboard.
So, now things are working just fine...And I'm wondering if this could be happening to your 1530???? Not sure, as you stated: that the *adapter pin on the laptop motherboard is working fine*
Just my thoughts, and my own opinion
------------------------------
I worked for Dell Tech Support in the past and the resolution steps are as this...
•First check the recall list [
•Reseat all of the power connectors, battery and ac adapter.
•Flash Update your BIOS or "Reflash" if it is the current version
•Check status after flash in Windows, if no result, check with a bootable CD running Linux, if still the same, call Tech Support for a replacement battery that is faulty.
•Run the Dell Diagnostics CD or partition to see if it detects a motherboard failure.
•They may also have other steps... Document your steps, say you "reseated ac adapater and battery, updated the bios, checked in Windows, ran the diags(provide error codes), and still no result" then
the rep should ask you for the PPID of your battery and send a replacement if the manufacture date is less than a year old.
•If you know the PPID cypher, there's no point in lying about the manufacture date because there is a LOT number and a Manufacturer warehouse ID as well. If they don't match, chances are your
replacement could get cancelled after your call when a manager that approves dispatch parts checks the PPID validity.
It's happened, I've had to call customers back because they lied about the PPID and their parts dispatch was cancelled because the PPID was invalid, sometimes the customer read a number/letter wrong
and it was fixed.

That should help you resolve if the Windows ACPI doesn't fix. Basically... you need to identify if it's a Software failure or hardware failure.... If it's in Windows and not on Linux, linux shows it boot up
fine... it's a Windows issue. It gets easier to find out what is wrong the more you probe into your troubleshooting.

Dell :: Plugged In, Not Charging

When connected to mains, my M1530 shows “plugged in, not charging” on the battery in the taskbar. I have tried two different chargers, tried with laptop switched off, and i have tried updating the BIOS.
The laptop runs perfectly, however the battery stays at a constant level and does not charge at all.
I remembered seeing a post on here about this issue some time ago, but I have looked and can’t find any solutions...
So, did anyone actually get to the bottom of this? Any information would be a great help!
I am running Vista Ultimate x64, and BIOS A12.
---------------------------
I recently got the dreaded "Plugged in, not charging" message in vista of my Dell XPS 1530.My laptop is out of warranty .I tried all the methods suggested and flashed the bios to A09 from A12.I also
checked the BIOS and it says
Battery Charge = 6%
Charger = 90W
Also when I connect the charger the charging light would flash for 5 sec. and then go off.Due to this the battery charge has moved from 6% to 7%.
I cannot buy a new mbd worth $500 . Any other cure for this ????
---------------------------
i was having this wierd behavior of my laptop where battery woudnt charge above 6%, ive tried most of the "solutions" on the web, but none of them worked.
-Desinstalling Microsoft's ACPI-Compliant control method battery
-Doing a vista clean install
-Restarting/Removing/Plugging the battery from the laptop with the system running and shut down, and all sorts of combinations between.
-Trying different AC (from dell, some of my friends have got some dell systems, i tried a m1330 AC)
-Tried to find a battery calibrator, but was unsuccesful, and even tried to downgrade my BIOS, but couldnt because my battery wasnt charged above 10% (thats a requisite to flash the BIOS)
NONE OF THOSE WORKED.
So i called dell, they told me to go to the BIOS, tech guys told me that the problem could be figured out there by 2 ways, it'd either:
-Recognize the AC adapter (in due case, it was a battery problem)
-Or it wouldnt recognize it (in which case, it would be a MoBo or a AC adapter problem.
Turned out it recognized the AC adapter, so next step was to send me a new battery, since i had a 6 cell battery (which the dell guy confirmed after i gave him the serial number of the battery) i expected
to receive a 6 cell battery replacement, but no, lucky me i received a 9 CELL BATTERY INSTEAD, free within warranty period (system is only 7 months old) so yeah, im happy, and my battery is charging
again.
Everything is fine, so i thought i would share this info for you guys.
One thing to get in consideration: The embedded battery health indicator might not indicate that the battery is healthy, since my faulty battery had 5/5 green lights when i tried to check the health but was
still faulty (my new one has 5/5 health lights and works wonderful)
-------------------------------------
i installed the Bios A12 for XPS M1530, my battery has been giving me the "plugged in, not charging" message. I've read in other threads that going back to Bios A09 fixed the problem for some people. I want to try that myself, but the problem is i can't install Bios A09 because my available battery left is only 4%. And the only way i would be able to install the Bios A09 is if i have at east 10% battery available. Since my battery can't charge,
-------------------------------------
ya, same situation here
Plugged in, not charging
If you are using a laptop, don’t worry
usually this thing only appear when your battery was under 12%
The system need time to balance the battery
so you might shut down your computer for like 5 mins with your AC plugged
then turn it on again, everything will be fine @@
