singleguy
10-01-2009, 19:34

Don't speak persion.

2-elementary
3-pre-intermediate

I'm on it but i was wondering if we could use another book instead of Interchange , Because I've been studying Interchang3 and i can say everything is as same as the old one ,except a little diffrent in Grammer and Vocab

we can focus on Vocabulary Organizer because it's so better than interchange for being good in Vocabulary.
but as you wish & i hope this group will be a place for Improving

One further , I've suggestion. Improve our listening by using part of movie and transcripting
so as you wish

Hi
unfortunately I couldn't join Mr clergyman's group so I'll start studying my main book(interchenge 2) tomorrow with some of my friends. We are going to discuss about the lessons that we study. sometimes I'll ask my questions and write some points and... in this topic and I want other friends to do it and I want others to tell me the wrong points.
Please don't speak Persian in this topic! JUST ENGLISH:27:

Let's start our discussion by this question: How should I read my Interchange book?
As you know this book includes these parts in each unite:
1-Snapshot
2-conversation
3-grammar focus
4-listening
5-speaking
6-word power
7-pronunciation
8-writing
9-reading
10-discussion
11-perspectives
I know the way of studying these parts taught in English classes but I want to know your idea and find better ways to study these parts.

In my opinion, at first you should make clear for your own that why you want to learn English?
You know, each person has a different aim for learning English, and I think Interchange book is not suitable for different aspects of English

I think English is not a matter of "want" , but a matter of "must" ... you most learn it no matter what ...at least, that's the case for those who are at the beginning of the road... you can think about your preferences at the later steps ... (which is not easly accessible for lots of people , hence the "must part!!")

When I was beginner, I read only Interchange 1, but it didn’t satisfy me. And I continued learning by the use of other materials, not by these kinds of books. I improved myself as a beginner to an intermediate in each aspect of English by the use of its specific materials. Anyway, that was just my personal opinion. And I respect others idea, if you enjoy studying Interchange and you feel satisfaction, so … DO IT.
Good Luck with you all.

I don' know what are you doing, but I think you'r just waste the time,I myself think free discusion is better than a book. I don't say they are not fit for learning but a book just for learning in the class. we need speaking rather than reading and so on, so I myself need to use my knowlage in Eglish and think all of us have a little knowlage of English and we just use it because English is volatile and there is no situation to use it.

maybe we can discuss about them. or discuss about the subjects of each unite. for examlpe the subject can be about food(intro, unite 9) or about "a time to remember" (interchange2, unite 1)

Comics And Comic Strips
A comic in the US means a comic strip or strip cartoon. Comic strips are a series of small drawings, called frames, with words that tell a story. Most US newspapers contain comic strips that are read by both adults and children. On weekdays they are usually four frames long, printed in black and white. On Sundays they are longer and in colour. Comic strips are also popular in British newspapers. Some can be found on the Internet.

Most comic strips make jokes about the characters in them and the things that happen to them. For instance, in the Peanuts strips (1950–2000) many of the jokes are about Charlie Brown, who has very bad luck, and his friend Lucy, who is unkind to him. In Calvin and Hobbes (1985–1995), the humour comes from the relationship between a boy and his imaginary friend, a toy tiger. Comic strips in British newspapers include Andy Capp and The Perishers. In the US, Dilbert is about life in the office while Doonesbury comments on political situations through its characters. Most newspapers also print single frames that comment humorously on politicians and other people in the news.

In Britain a comic is a picture magazine, usually for children. Comics contain short stories written as comic strips, and sometimes also competitions and articles. Some parents do not approve of comics, but others argue that they encourage children to read. Popular children’s comics include Beano, Dandy and 2000 AD, which features mainly science fiction stories. Comics for very young children are often based on popular television programmes, such as Thomas and Friends (which features Thomas the Tank Engine) and Bob the Builder. Adult comics, such as Viz, are usually very rude.

Some of the characters in Beano and Dandy have not changed much over the years and now look old-fashioned. Teachers, for instance, still wear mortarboards (= stiff black hats with a square top), though real teachers stopped wearing them long ago. Many of the most popular comics appear in the form of books, called annuals, around Christmas each year.

Comic booksare similar to comics. Each book has a set of characters who have adventures. Many of the characters, such as Spider-Man, Superman and Wonder Woman, have powers that ordinary people do not have.Pictures of the most famous characters from comic strips and comic books are used on a range of products. For instance, Gnasher and Snoopy, a character from the Peanuts strip, are printed on bed covers, T-shirts, lunch boxes and birthday cards.

Related to interchange 2, unite 1 , the second grammar focus
used to / be used to
Do not confuse used to do sth with be used to sth.
You use used to do sth to talk about something that happened regularly or was the case in the past, but is not now: I used to smoke, but I gave up a couple of years ago.
You use be used to sth / to doing sth to talk about something that you are familiar with so that it no longer seems new or strange to you: We’re used to the noise from the traffic now.I’m used to getting up early. You can also use get used to sth: Don’t worry — you’ll soon get used to his sense of humour.I didn’t think I could ever get used to living in a big city after living in the country.

used to
Except in negatives and questions, the correct form is used to
To form questions, use did: Did she use to have long hair? Note that the correct spelling is use to, not ‘used to’.
The negative form is usually didn’t use to, but in BrE this is quite informal and is not usually used in writing.
The negative form used not to (rather formal) and the question form used you to…? (old-fashioned and very formal) are only used in BrE, usually in writing.

Could anybody explain more about the grammar?:31:

u know wot, it is a very simple but sorta intangible for learners

students usually confuse 'used to' with 'simple past'

let me give an example:
Used to:
I used to play a lot when I was a child

Simple Past:
I went to Shiraz when I was a child

Usage:
we use 'used to' when we talk about an action which we used to do regular n frequently. not an event which happend just a few times so we must use 'used to' so that the audiance can feel that was my habit to play a lot

n besides, we use simple past when we talk about an event, action or whatever which happened in its specific time

some other examples:
I used to go swiming but not anymore

I used to wake up late

I used to oversleep n miss the first hour of my class: this means that it was my habit n it didn't happen just once but more than one time...In such a situation if u arrived on time, that would be shocking for other students to see u on time since u were always late, ...

But in the below example that would be shocking for yr classmates when they see u r late, since u've been always on time

I overslept and missed the first hour of my class: this means that it happenend just once
--------
if there was still any more question dun hesitate n ask
a great job is bein done here
good luck:11:l

Hi Guys
Thanks to Brain for his great speech:20:
Now it's my turn. Please tell the mistakes in the passage.
I always try to eat foods containing less sugar, fat and oil although I love them and I do sport professionally.
I always try to eat food at home instead of eating at the restaurant or in fast foods.
My favorite food is Beryan. Do you know that? That’s one of the tradition foods made in Esfahan. That’s really delicious and I'm crazy about that. I can just make fry eggs and some other foods that I myself invented them…LOL…they are a little funny so it's better not to talk about them…LOL…. I'm not a good cook at all.
Dou you used to eat breakfast every morning? As you know it's very important to eat breakfast everyday because it gives you energy for your activities in the morning. I red an article about breakfast, it told if you don't eat breakfast every morning, you will get fatter.
What kind of food do you eat for breakfast? I usually eat nuts or honey, tea or milk, cheese and bread. What about you?
What's your idea about eating especial thing on especial days of a year? For example we eat watermelon on Yalda's night. Or most of Iranian families eat rice and fish on new years day.

n: if there was any goof, laugh
v: If I have goofed, laugh

I want to start discussing food

I want to start a discusion about food

Foods are variant.Foods are divided into two main groups :
plant or animal origin
it consists essential nutrient for our body like ,carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, or minerals
some of them are good for our health and some of them are bad for us
u shuldent eat very mcuh.i recommend regard equilibrium.
somtimes it make us grow and somtimes it make us fat.
foods make by many ways but i dont know how it maked.I only can make "nimroo" [ برای مشاهده لینک ، لطفا با نام کاربری خود وارد شوید یا ثبت نام کنید ] my mom is professional.

it make us grow and somtimes it make us fat

برای چاق شدن بهتره از این اصلاح استفاده کنی: put on weight/ get fat

it may cause us to put on weigth..it causes us to get fat

البته it makes us fat هم درسته ها:46:

----------
foods make by many ways

Food can be made in different ways

----------

ussually we served desserts after/before main food it consists of fruit, ice cream, or pastry and etc
the dessert that i like very much is jelly....mmm i like it very mcuh..I think everyone like it too
my mom creat it every week or somtimes everynight maybe we have one for tonight

we usually serve

my mom makes it every night

I told u guy, yr English is pretty well. very nice it was

always try to eat food at home
just a suggestion; u can use 'home cooking' rather than the 'food at home'...yr sentence is gramatically correct but I think it can be a lit bit better: I prefer home cooking rather than eating out
eat out: to have yr meal in a restuarant

Dou you used to eat breakfast every morning?

well, I told u about the usage of 'used to' n I mentioned that we use 'used to' when we talk about sth we used to do regulary in the past n we dun do it anymore

n besisdes, we have 'be used to sth/doing sth': You use be used to sth/to doing sth to talk about something that you are familiar with so that it no longer seems new or strange to you

so here u can use : are you used to eating breakfast everymorning?

Attention: be used to doing sth; the main verb comes with 'ing' after 'be used to'
happy studying:11:l

hi guys.
i have a problem in blue interchange (2) page108 exercise5
. can you explain more about

correct verbs that we use this nouns.

first off, do u know wot collocation is precisely?
Oxford definition: the fact of two or more words often being used together, in a way that happens more frequently than would happen by chance

in English(even in other languages) there are some words which have to come together to make sense;...as an example : I make lots of mistakes while speaking English...if u use: I have lots of mistakes while speaking English then it would be sorta strange to native English speakers....because, 'mistake' mostly comes with 'make'
some other collocations might be: do your best/ give it a try/ make a wish
n so many other nice collocations...
here you have to match the given verbs with appropriate nouns...for example we always have: 'tell lies'...we can never say: 'say lies/ express lies'...

by the way, for finding the collocation u should go thru English-English dictionary n by just having a look at the examples u can catch them all...
n there is also some specific dictionaries for that
feel free to ask if u had more questions

We can start the discussion about sport with some question that they can help us to discuss better.

The question :
1-What sports are popular in your country?
2-Do you like sports?
3-What sports do you play or watch?
4-Where do you play?
5-How often do you play or practice?
6-When do you play or practice?
7- How long do you spend exercising every day?
8-Do you play sports at all?
9-Are the sports useful for our health or not?
10-And there are many other questions that they can help you, just find them an use them in your disquisition.

Well done!

Sport:

The sports are variant. Let me to difinte it for you. It is an activity that you do for keep your health good and it make you feel better after do it and you will be pleasure after them. Your body needs physical effort or skill and it doesn’t like to stop. The sports make you get many energy for your activities in a day. You have to do them if you like your healthy. It’s very important in our life. If do them in young days when you get old you won’t be like other old men / old women.
let’s me to say to you what sports I like, I only like swimming and I only like go swimming. But I’m not pro in it and I’m going to learn it soon. I like it because it can help me to feel better, when I’m depressed just the swimming cans help me. I like water much more than everything. It’s really wonderful. Of curse I like other sports like, volleyball, tennis, bike riding, hiking. But I like swimming more than other sports.
Sometimes the sports that I watch in TV is football. I don’t like very much because it waste my time. We only watch it don’t learn anything so we waste our time (This is my personal opinion). My team that I like is Esteghlal just that’s why I like blue colour. I played football with my friends in alley when I was smaller. But I don’t like it very much. Now I don’t play any sports.
I can speak about this subject much more

I can speak about this subject much moreThe sports are variant:
the term 'sport' doesn't need any article...so u have to omit 'the'...
variant doesn't seem to be correct...it's better to use: there are different kinds of sports...

Let me to difinte it for you:
after 'let' we dun have 'to'...
definite: define
so: Let me define it for you

It is an activity that you do for keep your health:
do sth to...so here it should be: It is an activity that you do to keep yrself healthy

after do it:
after/befor doing sth: after doing it

you will be pleasure after them:
will be (p.p): will be pleased

The sports make you get many energy:
after make in such sentences it's much better to have an adjective to describe yr feeling or whatever n the adj of 'ejergy' is 'energetic' so u can say: Doing Execrises/ sports can make you energetic

if you like your healthy:
if you like to be healty

young days:
early ages/ when you are young

the swimming cans help me:
as u know when we talk about the third person we should add 's' to the main verbs, but for Modal verbs the story is different...when we have 'should/may/can/shall/n .. ' neither the modal verbs, nor the main verbs accept the 's'...: e.g: I can swim/ she can swim...I should study hard/ She should Study hard
so here: Swimming can help me

in TV:
on t.v

Hi folks
Thanks to Brain because of starting the new subject
I love sports and all the athletes and that’s why I do that regularly. Let me talk about my sport. I love fighting sports so I do my favorite fighting sport. I do Wushu That most of the people in the world know that by this name: Shoalin Kung fu.
I've fallen in love with this sport since I was a child and seen Jacky Chan and lee's films and I've done this sport since 3 years ago and I'm preparing myself for the competitions for next year. Wushu has many styles and my style is Shaolin Khong Quan . the master of this style is Mr. Hosseini and he is also my master. This sport divided into 2 parts: Sanshou(fighting) & Taolu(art work) That I mostly do the art work.
Let me to talk about this subject wider. I suggest all of you to do your favorite sport . because I experienced that sport is not good just for our physical health.
Try to do your favorite sport even you don't have enough ability to do that. Just try to release your extra energy. I know it's really hard at first because your muscles will become painful at first. But if you keep on trying and do that regularly you will used to doing that, like me. I'm addicted to my sport.
Let me to tell you the truth, the most important experience that I have when I was in 3rd grade in high school. (I started this sport when I was in 2nd grade in high school). One day I got a really bad mark in one of the most important lessons and I was so sad that I wanted to go somewhere and just cry. In that day, after the school I was on my way to the gym. I went gym and that day we exercised really hard. But after the exercise I didn't feel as sad as before doing sport and the way of my thinking about my mark completely changed.
So I thought that the mental effect of sport is really great. And I suggest you that if you feel unpleasant try to do sport instead of thinking over about your problem.
Let's talk about sport and child. Child that do sport don't know much things about sport and they just want to spend their time and maybe they will become uninterested in sport, so the most thing that they need is encouragement.
When I was a child, If somebody encouraged me, I didn't abandon my sport at all and I became a master of this sport. But nobody encouraged me and I abandoned this sport until 3 years a go. So try to encourage the chide who do sports.
Wow … I'm really sorry! I talked a lot.

related to interchange2, unite2
much / a lot of / lots of
Much is used only with uncountable nouns. It is used mainly in questions and negative sentences: Do you have much free time? How much experience have you had? I don’t have much free time.
In statements a lot of or lots of (informal) is much more common: ‘How much (money) does she earn? She earns a lot of money. You can also use plenty (of). These phrases can also be used in questions and negative sentences.
A lot of / lots of is still felt to be informal, especially in BrE, so in formal writing it is better to use much, a great deal of or a large amount of.
Very much and a lot can be used as adverbs: I miss my family very much. I miss my family a lot. Thanks a lot. In negative sentences you can use much: I didn’t enjoy the film (very) much.

Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
the best-known play (1962) by the US writer Edward Albee. It is about a college teacher and his wife who constantly argue and play cruel games with each other and a younger couple who visit them. In the film version (1966) the older couple were played by Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton3.

Virginia Woolf (1882–1941)
an English writer of novels. She is well known for the experimental style of many of her books. She was one of the first writers to use the ‘stream of consciousness’, a way of describing a person’s thoughts and feelings as a flow of ideas as the person would have experienced them, without using the usual methods of description. She was a member of the Bloomsbury Group and is considered an important early writer about feminism (= the idea that women should have the same rights and opportunities as men). Her best-known novels include Mrs Dalloway (1925), To the Lighthouse (1927) and Orlando (1928).

Tom Cruise (1962 )
a US actor. He won Golden Globe Awards for Born on the Fourth of July (1990), Jerry Maguire (1996) and Magnolia (2000). He is probably best known for playing a US Navy pilot in Top Gun (1986). His other films have included Mission Impossible (1996) and Eyes Wide Shut (1999) in which he appeared with Nicole Kidman, to whom he was married for ten years until they separated in 2001.

But if you keep on trying and do that regularly you will get used to doing that, like me.
I talked a lot.

thank you, sorry for this delay; I was sorta busy n was not in the mood of correcting the mistakes.
As before, it was pretty nice n with the least possible mistakes, just have a look at some of them n in case there was any question ask :10:
I've done this sport since 3 years ago
First off, after since we mostly have a complete sentence; e.g: sine I was three years old...or we mention an exact time: since 1998
then, when we talk about sth which we are still doing that it's better to use Present Perfect continous: I've been doing this sport since I was (age)

Let me to talk : 'let' doesn't acept any prep; e.g: let me know
so it should be: let me talk

I experienced that sport is not good just for our physical health:
I couldn't get you precisely here but if u meant: من با توجه به تجربیات متوجه شدم که ورش تنها برای سلامت جسمی نیست; you could write in this way:
According to my experince/ Since I've experinced doing some sports I've noticed that it is not only good for our physical health

Second grade in highschool: 2nd grade of high school

time and maybe they will become: u've used 'maybe' here so it eliminates the need of using 'will'---> maybe they become

Child: 1 child; 2 children

master of this sport: in this sport

happy studying, keep goin, that is an absolutely a great job

Hi buddy, thanks for joining the guys here

it like: when u r talking about the similarity of sth you have to use: it is like
like as a verb means: دوست داشتن
so it is like a real war

start play: after 'start' verbs come in infinitive or gerund form: I started to play/ I started playing

well, present perfect is used when we are talking about sth which we have done but the time doesn't matter; let me explain the examples:
Have you ever eaten Moroccan food?
Possible answers:
- Yes, I have. I have eaten Moroccan food---------> Have I mentioned the time? no
- Yes, I have, I ate it once in Paris-------> I've mentioned Paris here which means that I'm talking about past n a specific time in the past so it is answered with simple past.
- Yes, I have. I ate it some years ago in paris------> that is exatly like the above example
----------
when u use present perfect with 'since' that makes it sorta meaningless bcuz u r mentioning an action which u are still doing; so in such cases u have to use Present Perfect Continuous...so: I've been doing this sport since 2001/ I was a child....
n sometimes when u wanna emphasize on sth u should use 'present perfect continuous' as well: e.g: I''ve been waiting for you for about an ahour----> in such a case u wanna show that u r sorta angry bcuz of yr partner's delay

instead of this sentence can we say: It likes a real warI dun think so, because like as a verb doesn't refer to similarity

And whats you idea about that sentence in my post:

Is it wrong again?
Used to refers to the past: I used to wake up late

be used to doing(I am used to/ he is used to): refers to the present; I'm used to getting up early--> right now I have no difficulty with waking up early

get used to doing refers to sth which u r getting familiar with day by day; I'm getting used to waking up early---> I may still have some difficulties with waking up early but it's getting easier n easier each day'

-----------
By the way, present perfect is not tangable, there are so many English-learners who can never feel it, but let me tell u in both speaking n writing it is really common among native speakers

Please check my essay:20:

I'm one of the advocates of sport. From childhood, I was interested in fighting sports and used to do karate, I don’t know why I couldn’t tolerate some sort of mental sports such as chess, even I used to ridicule people who did it. I didn’t use to consider these kinds of sports as sport at all and thought that the sport was just physical, though I got the fact that the physical aspect of sport is supported by mental and has no value without that, Anyway, despite my interest in karate, I gave it up due to the so called more important affairs such as entrance exam, university, job and lab lab lab.

Looking back at those days of sport, I can just be sorry and blame myself for abandoning my favorite sport. :37:

Racing
Horse racing has been popular as a spectator sport throughout the British Isles for hundreds of years. It was also the first sport organized in the American colonies. This was in 1664 on Long Island, New York. Four years later the first American sports trophy, a silver bowl, was presented there.
There are two main types of horse racing. In flat racing horses run against each other over a set distance. In National Hunt racing, also called steeplechasing, horses jump over fences and ditches round a course. The main flat races in Britain each year are the English Classics, five races for three-year-old horses. These are the Derby and the Oaks (both run at Epsom), the One Thousand Guineas and the Two Thousand Guineas (run at Newmarket) and the St Leger (run at Doncaster). The four-day Royal Ascot meeting is an important social occasion, attended by members of the royal family. The most famous steeplechase is the Grand National, which was first run in 1836 and which takes place each spring at Aintree. Many people who take no interest in horse racing have a bet on this race. Racing attracts people from all levels of British society but only the rich can afford to own and train a racehorse.
In the US flat racing is called thoroughbred racing or just racing; steeplechasing is not often seen. The most famous race is the Kentucky Derby, which began in 1875 and is run each year at Louisville, Kentucky. This is a big event on national television, and informal bets are made in offices and homes, even in states where gambling is illegal. Other important races are the Preakness at Baltimore, Maryland, and the Belmont Stakes at Elmont, New York. The three together are called the triple crown. Only 11 horses have won the Triple Crown since 1919, and none since 1978. The most famous was Citation.
Famous British and US jockeys have included Willie Carson, Pat Eddery, Lester Piggott, Peter Scudamore, Willie Shoemaker, Laffit Pincay, Angel Cordero and Steve Cauthen. Horses famous in Britain have included Arkle, Desert Orchid, Nijinsky, Red Rum and Shergar, and in the US Galant Fox, Secretariat, Affirmed, Man o’ War, Native Dancer and Cigar, which was chosen Horse of the Year in 1995 and 1996.
A type of race popular in America is harness racing, in which a horse pulls a small two-wheeled cart called a sulky with its driver. The most famous race is the Hambletonian, popularly called the ‘Hambo’, at the Meadowlands Racetrack in New Jersey. Harness racing’s triple crown is the Hambletonian, the Kentucky Futurity, and the Yonkers Trot.
Betting on the result of a race is for many British people an important part of the sport and contributes to the atmosphere of excitement and tension at a racecourse. Before a race starts bookmakers take bets, calculate the odds and say which horse is the favourite. People can also bet on a race on the Internet or at a bookmaker’s or betting shop. Betting shops show live television broadcasts of races.
Americans also like to play the ponies. People can bet beside the track or off-track. Telephone bets can be made in some states. Even though many Americans do not approve of betting, most have accepted horse racing as an exciting sport and a US tradition. This is reflected in popular culture. Camptown Races is one of Stephen Foster‘s most popular songs. Damon Runyon set many of his short stories at race tracks, the mystery novels of Dick Francis are set in the world of racing and Hollywood has produced popular films about racing such as National Velvet (1945) and The Black Stallion (1980). See also greyhound racing.

WOW… this passage is really hard for me...: D. actually I didn't read that completely. I just put it for some ones who like to know more about American races.
There is more information about the signed words in the passage. If you want to know the information about them, tell me to put them for you as soon as possible.

Privacy
The British value their privacy (= having a part of their life that is not known to other people) and believe that everyone has a right to a private life. Many British people like to ‘keep themselves to themselves’ and do not discuss their private affairs. Things people like to keep private vary but may include personal relationships, family problems, how much they earn, their health, their political opinions, and sometimes what they do in their free time. It is considered rude to ask somebody about their private life, even if you know them well.

In the US the Constitution protects people’s right to privacy. A police officer has no power to stop people and ask them what they are doing unless they have committed a crime. Information about people can be shown to others only under special circumstances, and usually only with their permission. When newspapers print details about the family life of a politician or film actor they are often criticized for invasion of privacy. On the other hand, actors and politicians tell the press about their family life for publicity reasons, and ordinary Americans appear on television talk shows where they discuss their bad marriages, health problems and how they cannot control their children. The apparent contradiction in attitudes may be explained by the fact that Americans believe strongly in the right to privacy, but as long as that right is respected, they are happy to give it up. They believe it is better to be open and honest than to have secrets. The British may be less willing than Americans to talk about their own lives but they have an equally strong desire to know about the private lives of famous people. There is a constant argument, for instance, about the extent to which the media should be allowed to report the private lives of members of the royal family.

Not all Americans tell the world everything about their lives. Money and --- are rarely discussed. Husbands and wives usually know how much each other earns, but other family members do not. People may say how much they paid for something, especially if the price was low, but asking somebody else how much they paid is acceptable only for small things, not a house or a car. In general people are happier offering information than being asked for it.
Being given advice can also disturb an American’s sense of privacy. If somebody gives them advice it suggests that that person can solve their problem better than they can themselves. When offering advice, people use indirect language, and instead of saying, ‘You should do this,’ they may say, ‘I tried doing this, and it worked for me’.

SYNONYMS
Afraid
frightened , scared , alarmed , paranoid , apprehensive
All these words describe feeling or showing fear.

If you are afraid / frightened / scared of sb/sth/doing sth or afraid / frightened / scared to do sth, you think you are in danger of being hurt or suffering in some way. paranoid (rather informal) afraid or suspicious of other people and believing that they are trying to harm you, in a way that is not reasonable: You're just being paranoid.

Holidays

Hi my friends I want to speak about Holidays.Let me describe exactly this word for you.Holidays are a period of time when you have a lot free time and you don't have works to do , in fact you are unemployed. So everyone do some works for spending own free times, for example : going to the moives, going to the pool, going to the picnic, etc. We have several kind Holidays. I guess all of people like this Holiday especially students. Bank holidayis a public holiday for example the banks are closed in new year's day, etc. Busman's holiday is a holiday that is you sepnt doing the same thing that you do at work. Hmmm I think there are holiday camp in each city for people, like we have Alavi's park in our city and we went there each week at night for eating dinner at there and it was very funny and I like it very much because I play some sports at there, like football, tennis, etc. Let me speak about my works that I like to do in holidays. I like go to nature cuz I like plants, animals and landscapes I don't like human creations's nature. I also like go to the pool if we had sea in our city I went there everyday cuz the seas are beautiful. I like many things to do in holidays. but I don't have time to speak about all of them. I think it's enaugh for now. I want to know that what you do in holidays. Maybe I'll do them in my holidays. Oh sorry I speak a lot

just a suggestion:46: n let me add, those who dun mind to have their writings corrected can mention it at the end of their writing so that my friends n I may feel free to correct the mistakes of yrs

everyone do some works for spending own free times: everyone does some work to spend their own free times
- after everyone/everybody/someone/somebody we should use singular verbs: everybody does/everyone eats
- we use 'for' when we r talking about the usage of sth n we use 'to' when we talk about purposes

We have several kind Holidays: several kinds of holidays

thats why it often events to celebrate or particualr events: some holidays are for/because of some special events

at night for eating dinner at there: at nights to eat dinner there
there is no need to use 'at' for 'there'

sports at there: sports there

in holidays: on holidays/ during holidays

I like go to nature: I like to go to nature/ I like going to nature
after 'like' you have to choice, you can either use infinitive or gerund; it depends on what u wanna say; when u use infinitive it means that you fancy doing the action at the moment;
e.g: I like to swim---> it means that you like two swim right now

and sometimes you can have gerund which u r talking abou sth generally.
e.g: I like swimming---> it means 'swimming' is one of the sports which I like

thank u
No !
I think idea is false here , too.
Actually " Very " is the problem , because it's meaning in Persian is the same As Much and Many , but "very" is for describing
But , Much and Many are for showing the size and value... i hope you Got it :31:

Hi my fiend
welcome there
nice to join us:11:

Thanks my friends for warm welcome
Before I start my essay, can I ask everyone one question? Please show me if u know: Whats difference between vacation and holiday

HOLIDAY

:20:I like holidays and doing nothing
Holiday means: stop your job and relax, go out for travelling etc…That sounds wonderfull. I like beaches with waves, gulls, brigh sunny, fresh air and especially :31:beautfull girls in bikinis
I remember when I was a boy, I used to sneak out of my house to swim, play football and take the sun with my friends…now, it seem to be memorable…
I have a german friend. He is here(Viet Nam) for his working. I asked him: Wht will u do on Tet holiday (in Viet Nam) or on furlough? He said: im going to visit ThaiLan, Singapore and some other contries…and u? I said: I’m going to come back my hometown to visit my familly, my friends and my teachers who are always in my mind! He was very surprised. Do u know why? For Viet Namese, familly is the most important. We try to work, earn a lot of money because of our familly. On Tet holiday or furlough, we usually come back home to visit our parents, relationships…especially on Tet holiday. That’s our traditional!
:31:Any way, I like nice beaches and beautifull girls in bikinis
Thanks for your attention
How about u, my friends

I found something in Oxford Advaned Dictionary for you:
BRITISH / AMERICAN
holiday / vacation
You use holiday (or holidays) in BrE and vacation in NAmE to describe the regular periods of time when you are not at work or school, or time that you spend travelling or resting away from home: I get four weeks’ holiday / vacation a year. He’s on holiday / vacation this week.I like to take my holiday / vacation in the winter.the summer holidays / vacation.
In NAmE a holiday (or a public holiday) is a single day when government offices, schools, banks and businesses are closed: The school will be closed Monday because it’s a holiday. This is called a bank holiday in BrE.
The holidays is used in NAmE to refer to the time in late December and early January that includes Christmas, Hanukkah and the New Year.
Vacation in BrE is used mainly to mean one of the periods when universities are officially closed for the students.

as you know BrE: British English
NAmE:North American English

well, they are somehow the same
Holiday is more common in British English n Vacation is used in American English

but consider that 'holiday' can be used as a verb which means to go on a vacation

the first idea:
we can study one of the units in the interchange book once in week and then come here and speak about everything we learned. with collocation . replay : with collocation . and teaching together to level up together and same .
it is very important : teaching together
whats your opinion?

Oops, no
have a look at it(Advanced Oxford):
Holiday: 1- [U] (also holidays [pl.]) (both BrE) (AmE vacation) a period of time when you are not at work or school
2 - [C] (BrE) (AmE vacation) a period of time spent travelling or resting away from home
3 - [C] a day when most people do not go to work or school, especially because of a religious or national celebration
4 - (holidays) [pl.] (AmE) the time in December and early January that includes Christmas, Hanukkah and New Year
and as you can see in the picture below u see that Holiday and Vacation are somehow the same:

Ya, u r somehow right; but why dun u try to come up with a book which is somehow suitable for all of you?
it can be a short story even, u can all go thru a short story beside the main book u study...then u can have a discussion about the short story; or u can even study these practical books like Grammar/Vocabulary in use; or whatever which u find useful
and u can also do sth for yr listening; someone can share a listening track of even Interchange books and give others time to write them, then after a few days u can share the transcript as well(that is wot we did for a while in Listening Workshop):

Thanks for explaining about Holiday and Vocation. I think I got it
I agree with Brain and Sepid12ir
I think E 4room is a good place to practise E. U can write, read, correct, learn etc. Ofcourse ur E can be better very fast. But how to maintain an E 4room? I think it’s a difficult ques. Last year, I took part in an E club, there were a lot of idea to maintain an E club. One of them is chose. They also did like us, one topic for one week. But there r some differences between our topic and their topic.
For example: with the topic Holiday, I think they will change to: Which do u prefer beautifull beaches or hight moutains? Of course they also write a essay which like Brain did.
I mean: we should give opposite points of view. And members hold opposite opinions. So I think we can discuss very ebulliently. And in that discussing, we can use all of knowledges which we studied in books, learnt on E class or from the internet etc, for example: new words, new structures, some grammar rules etc. So I think E4room will become a good place for u to practise E and help u to remember everythings which u studied

For example: one of topics
TOMATO OR WATERMELON
Dont be too hurry. I really dont want to ask you: Which do ur like Tomato or watermelon.
Which i would like to know today is that: What kind of person do you want to become:"Tomato" or "Watermelon".
As ur know that Tomato has a same red colour both in its skin and its inside while Watermelon has a green skin but red inside
If tomato is used to show those pesons who are frank or straighforward like "red skin, red inside". Then Watermelon is used to show those who always know how to make the others feel comfortable and happy by telling something which isnt as its fact
Someone said that Being Tomato is very easy. You live as you are so you needn't think how to conduct and whether you've talked something wrong or not because you always tell everything truly as you think. In brief you are quite comfortable because you're yourself.
But the others said Being Watermelon is better. Sometime you make someone hurt just because you are too frank. Why you dont try to make everybody feel happier and more comfortable.
You think which is better? please share us your ideas

Thats my idea! Hw about u

Let's face it
I read old posts of this topic
Signleguy wanted to study Interchang books with a group
Sombodies came and say their oponions and then went
Sombodies accepted and then went
and ....
Now look on the bright side : he is studing Interchange ALONE and all of them that accepted have gone
What a good group
Anyway,
so I decided to continue this way
Before u read it plz notice : it's not important that u r bad or good in english, just try to do this activities as much as u can and we help u and learn from u some points
That way is :
We will do some activities in days of a week

Saturday
Sunday
Monday
Tusday
Wednesday
Thursday
Friday

for example

Speaking > Speak togother in Yahoo with VOICE CHAT
Listening > Put an English audio and then write its script
Reading > Read a short story and then put new words, idioms, grammer points
Writing > write an essay abt a subject
--------------------------------------------------
and signleguy put his informations abt intechange 2

plz tell ur actvites u like and then we put them in days of week
this is my idea

Such a good topic because we are somehow approaching the New Year holidays so let me tell you about me and my family's plan for this holidays.

We are about to have a trip to north of Iran firstly, due to its good weather. I love the sea and nothing in world for me is more interesting than watching it in sunset or when it is stormy and waves are pushing one another to reach the seaside to hit the craft or sands. I love watching people swimming, playing, and chatting ……..

The second city would be Shiraz, the historic town that owns lots of monuments and tombs and is wielded by hospitable people. I love this city because not only it is my ancestor's city, but also reminds me unforgettable memories.

Holidays give people a chance to be relax, to have good time with their family and friends, to do their retard works and so on:20:

Hi buddies,

I have a suggestion, isn’t it better to present the more limited subjects. For example: how was your last holiday, what are you going to do in holidays and something like this……

I don’t know about you but it is hard for me to write generally:41:

I guess no body study interchange books here and the information about interchange that I put in this topic is not really important and useful for anybody. Maybe we continue studying from other books.
For example, as sepid12ir told, we can choose some reading books (like Oxford fact files) and then talk (write) about the subject, about grammar points about idioms about new words and synonyms, etc. And as Brain said we can chat with each other in a chat room about them. Or for improving our listening ability we can do something else that Sepid12ir told.
Sepid12ir and Brain have really good ideas to improve and discipline this topic by scheduling a perfect timetable.
But I worry about Mohammad Clergyman’s class. He’s class hasn’t started yet. But it will be started in near future.
We will finish our plans about improving the topic at least until Wednesday! And I will change my first post to “table of contents and the topic’s studying schedule”, if you help me. In this way new members will know what we are doing in this topic. Some thing that is happening in this topic is very far from that post that I put in the first post. So it must be changed as soon as possible.
Brain invited his friend from another country and I invited one of my friends from china to this topic and that’s really good because it can help us to know more about other people’s culture. If we don’t discipline our topic we will learn many things from them but they think that Iranians can’t manage even a simple topic:31:.
I want all of the members to help each other to do that, especially the members who told that they want to join us and then they threw their hands in and merged into the background.
Sorry I talked a lot.
Could somebody correct my mistakes in the essay? (kidding)

me:27:, actually I've finished that
All the books have their own pros n cons...True To Life books were good but sorta boring; It is hard recalling any interesting topic since most of the topics were poor
Interchange is also good, but the biggest problem is the similarity of all the units which make it boring for students; all the units follow the same functions and that is one of the problems of the book which I can mention

yr last sentence is grammatically correct, but it would be much better if u had used Present Perfcet: Has anybody studied this book?

When I was seven years old , my father bought a Nintedo(nes) (it said Micro too in Iran) console for me. Well I remember that I were happy so much . The firs game I played on the Nes was Super Mario . The StoryLine of said game was about a man that searching for his princess and in himself path he see many problem among fighting with the final boss of the levels. Genre of that game was platformer ... And now meke a nostalgic sense to me when I remember that events .
I love the FPS , action adventure and Survival horror genre in all genre and if I wanna say some my favorite games in said genre I have to say : Resident Evil series , Silent Hill series ,COD series , POP Trilogy , DMC4 , HL series , etc.
The best game in my life was/is/will be Mafia and then Fahrenheit. Every gamers knows that Mafia hase been what wonderful game ! the mafia' genre was action adventure and TPS(third persion shooter) . The mafia' story is about a guy that for his (bad&good) luck join to the gangster group and then he will be to one of the bosses group. Graphically and soundly , Mafia was a best game in itself age .
If I wanna say about myself, I must say "I am a game addict" !!! I play about three & four hours or more in day. Right now there are twelve games on my computer among : COD4 , COD5 , Fallout3 , L4D , POP , GH3(legend of rock) , GH:Aerosmith , Mirror's Edge , GTA IV and etc that I playing them parallel !
My strength love to the computer games causes I join to critic's group games and now I write for a game magazine .

1-What Game Set do you like much more?
Racing&
Adventure Games

2-Why do you like Computers Games?

Honestly speaking, I don’t like them, at times; I do them just to fill my pastimes, despite knowing that there are a lot to do in the off times but I don’t know may be I do them just to have a record. It improves my self-confidence

3-What can it help you?

In my opinion they don't have any merit

4-Are they harmful or useful? Why?

They are harmful for eyes and they have bad effects on mind too if you consider the children who are interested in fighting games you can spot the affections easily

5-Can you tell us some Game's name that you like?

Sorry, I don’t know their name in English

6-What was your first computer game that you play?

As I remember, it was combad, I used to do it right after my school time till mid night. Since it weakened my lessons my dad deprived me of doing these games, I cried a lot:41:

Is there anybody to take my mistakes?

Computer Games
Let me talk about my child days.
When I was 4 years old, my mom bought A Nintedo exactly like Legend-Of-Zelda for me and my brothers. I played a lot in those days.I only liked : Super mario. Ramboo and ...
After 4 years We bought a Sega. I played with it a lot too and my best game was Tiny-Toon.
Again after 7 years we bought a Computer and I entered to the World Of Computer Games. I liked it very much and I played more than 4 houres each days. I could do better works but I really addicted to it
.And days passed untill I decided to leave Computer Games.
I broked my CDs Games it was hard for me but I made up my mind and now I don't play any Computer Games forever.
Anyway let me to answer the questions. My best game set was Role-Playing cuz of I can speak to other forign people in around world and it improve my English,
anyway I liked other game set like Action Adventure, Fatastic Games and...
I have a lot of souvenirs of them. First game that I played in computer was Max Payne1 and IGI I liked them a lot. I play a lot of computer games, maybe 80% of them. Yeah I was crazy.
My favorite games were The Neverhood,Hitman, WoW , and ....
I think Computer Games didn't any help to us cuz of they waste our time and everybody can do better works instead of it.
Those games only improve a little my english and not other thing.
I recommend to you didn't play Computer Games I know you will relent
:31:
My writing is weak I have to improve it but I don't know HOW .. can somebody help me and us

Anyway let me to answer the questionsI think it doesn't need "to" ... it's better to Omit it

My best game set was Role-Playing cuz of I can speak to other forign people in around world and it improve my English,Yes ... i was playing Tribalwars ... it's a browser based game set in the middle ages and it's so fun ... you join a foreign tribe and then you have to be active and speak to others in english ... that was great ... but it needs a lot time to be successful in it ... :31:

The NeverhoodYEAH!
everyone who has played this thinks it's the best game of the world ! :31:
Me and my brother ( keiyvanfrog) finished it 5-6 times ... that was very great ... i remember ttimes that we cried for it ... when Wili and the Robot was dead ... :45:
but in the end of the game ... when they were alive again that was the best award for finishing the game :31:

2-Why do you like Computers Games?

who say(S) this ?
I dont llike but for entertainment i spesify a few time for thisspecify...well, it doesn't make sense here! u should have used: devote

wow! Professional! do u really write for game magazine?...great job
my father buy a Nintedo: my father bought...
u are talking about past(when u were a child so u should use past tense)

it said: it is named
it said: آن گفت!!!
it is named: نام گزاری شده/ اسمش هست

He see many problem: he faces many problems
1. when u are describing a game or whatever u should use Present tenses
2. for "Movajeh shodan ba moshkelat" u should use "face a problme"
3. u have used 'many' here so it mean more than one problem so u should make it plural

was/is/will be Mafia: Mafia is my best game (for)ever
that is the most common answer

a best: the best
best always come with "the"

good luck n happy studying:10:l
