Is this what you are looking for? I hope it is beautiful enough for you!

Oh I see..

Well I'm not sure how people write addresses in Iran so I'm afraid I can't help you with this one..

Sorry..

graphmax
30-10-2007, 21:59
is this true for example:
across from the univercity,Green street,Blue Square
tanx

Kite102
30-10-2007, 22:32
Yes that is fine but it really depends on what people expect to find as an address in Iran. In Britain for example, we would always put the house number and Post code. But perhaps it is done differently in Iran? (Do you have post codes/PO box numbers there?). The line you gave is fine except you need 'opposite' instead of 'across'

Opposite the university ,Green street, Blue Square.

I hope this is useful

How to write a formal letter

With the advent of email, it is becoming less and less common to write letters, but the few letters that you will write will probably be very important ones, such as covering letters for job applications, covering letters for questionnaires or surveys which are part of your research, or letters of complaint to your bank manager.

It is very important, therefore, that your letters have the desired effect on the reader. In order to achieve this, they should be:

in the correct format
short and to the point
relevant
free of any grammatical or spelling mistakes
polite, even if you’re complaining
well presented

This guide will give some general advice on letter writing and includes some sample letters.

If you are replying to a letter it can be a good idea to note how that letter has been formatted and expressed.

Format

There are certain conventions that your reader will expect you to follow; if you don’t, you will create a bad impression.

Here is a letter in standard format. Refer to the notes afterwards for explanation.

1 Your address, but not your name, usually goes in the top right hand corner. You would not
usually include your telephone number or email address here, but this would be
permissible.

2 The name and address of the person you’re writing to goes below this, on the left. If
you don’t have a specific name, always at least try to put some sort of title. You
should always, however, address the letter to a particular person if at all possible.

3 The position of the date is more flexible. It can go on the left or the right, usually below
the addressee details. The format of the date is also flexible; it could be written
5 April 2003, 5th April 2003, 5/4/03 or 05/04/03. Avoid putting the day and month the
other way round.

4 The salutation at the beginning of the letter depends on whether or not you have the
name of the person.

If you do, write Dear Mr. Ochs, Dear Mrs. Baez, Dear Miss Perhacs, or, if you don’t know
the marital status of a woman, or if she has written this, Dear Ms. Bunyan. It is possible
to write Dear Robert Fripp or Dear Alison Statton, but many people consider this
awkward. If the person has a specific title, use this: Dear Dr. Hammill.

If you don’t know the name of the person, you would traditionally write Dear Sir. This
is clearly somewhat sexist, so many people prefer Dear Sir/Madam or Dear Sir or Madam.

The ending of the letter depends on how you have started: see below.

5 It is common now to put the subject of the letter directly below the salutation. This
would be in bold or underlined. The purpose is to give the reader an idea of what the
letter is about before reading it, and to be able to pass it on to a more appropriate
person if necessary.

If you are replying to a letter which had a reference (or ref.) on it, you should repeat this
on your letter, probably on the same line as the date, but on the other side of the page.
Write Your ref.: xxxx/xx

6 The content of your letter should be as short as possible, divided into short, clear
paragraphs.

7 It is common to end your letter with a phrase such as I look forward to hearing from
you. It’s OK to do this, but it’s a bit meaningless.

8 To end the letter, you would normally write Yours sincerely if you have started the
letter with the name of the person, or Yours faithfully if you have started with
something like Dear Sir.

9 Sign you name directly below this and then print it below the signature.

Be concise and relevant
The person you are writing to may be deluged with letters and if yours is 3 sides of dense text, then there is every possibility it will end up in the bin. Letters should take seconds rather than minutes to read.

As a result, get straight to the point and stick to it, don’t include any unnecessary or supplementary information, don’t use any flowery language or long words just for the sake of it, and don’t repeat too much information which may already be included in a CV, for example.

Check your grammar and spelling very carefully

Mistakes will create a very bad impression, will lessen the effect of what you’re saying and in the case of a job application letter, could well also consign it to the bin. So:-

use the spellchecker if you’re using a computer

check the spelling yourself, as the spellchecker won’t recognize incorrect use,
for example, of dose and does. Use a good dictionary.

check your grammar carefully. If it’s been pointed out to you that you make
mistakes, look especially for these kinds of errors. Get someone else to check it
for you if necessary.

check your sentences and punctuation. Are the sentences complete? Does the
punctuation help to make what you’re saying clearer?

Don’t rush the letter; many mistakes occur because of this. Allow plenty of time for checking, and if necessary, for rewriting. The letter may well help to decide your future.

Use the right tone of language

It’s important to use the right type of language, the right ‘register’. Most letters you write will need to be formal, but not overly so. In fact, you should use similar language to that which you use in your academic writing. This means you should:-

avoid everyday, colloquial language; slang or jargon

avoid contractions (I’m; it’// etc)

avoid emotive, subjective language (terrible, rubbish etc)

avoid vague words such as nice, good, get etc

You should always be polite and respectful, even if complaining. One way of doing this in English, which is common in formal letter writing, is to use ‘modal verbs’ such as would, could and should. Instead of simply writing Please send me, you could express this more formally as I would be grateful if you could send me ... Don’t overdo it though, and make your language too formal or maybe old fashioned; don’t look through a thesaurus and put in lots of unnecessarily long words.

Having said this, British people tend to be fairly informal, even in business and academic circles, so it is normal to start using first names at an early stage.

Make sure the letter is well presented

First impressions are important, so use good quality paper, centre the letter on the page, don’t leave coffee stains on it, make sure you’ve spelt the person’s name correctly and don’t forget to sign it!

Mr G. Sands
Fitness First

LT1 5MX

Dear Mr Sands

Re: Fitness Instructor FF/32

I am writing to apply for the job of Fitness Instructor, as advertised in Thursday's Courant. This is an ideal job for me given my enthusiasm for sport, my related experience and qualifications.
Sport and fitness training have always been important to me, which is why I chose to take a BTEC Diploma in Sports Science. I obtained distinctions in the Sports Anatomy & Physiology and Sports Injuries modules last year and am confident that I will get similar marks in Exercise Physiology, Mechanics of Sport and Sports Supervision & Management this year. I am a confident user of Microsoft Office 2000 and have worked extensively with Fitness Publisher, a program for analysing fitness.
As you can see from my CV, I've taken the opportunity to gain extra qualifications that were on offer at college, which has helped me get part-time work as a pool attendant. I'm called on to provide cover during busy times so am used to working irregular hours at short notice. I've also run a lunchtime aerobics class at college since the start of this year.
I finish college in six weeks and am keen to find a job rather than carry on with further full-time study. I could start any part time work or training sooner as many of my classes are finishing and most of my assignments are done. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely

Dear Sir

I understand from my colleague, Professor William Jones, who visited your Loughton plant last month, that you sometimes allow groups of students to tour the factory and see for themselves how Japanese production techniques operate in a European environment. Professor Jones himself was most impressed by his own visit, and recommended that I write to you.

Would it be possible for a group of 20 Business Studies students - male and female, aged between 18 and 22 - from Whitcomb Polytechnic to visit you before the end of this term, which is on the 21 December? I realise that you must receive many requests for such visits, and that the time available may already be booked up. If it is not, and you are able to see us, I should be most grateful if you could suggest a date and let me know of any normal conditions you lay down for visits of this kind.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully

یه زبان تخصصی هم هست که بایستی اونو امتحان داد.

حالا تو دفترچه ثبت نام بایستی زبان انتخابی رو چی زد ، فرانسه یا انگلیش؟

منظورم اینه که زبان تخصصی رو میتونه انگلیش انتخاب کنه و بعدش توی دفترچه دوم که برای انتخاب رشته هستش زبان فرانسه رو انتخاب کنه برای تحصیل؟

Why do u think narsis is good?
of course their database is good but u can find a lot of program with this database ( i have it for babylon) and their programmer werent very good they couldn’t make their program alone
They stole some dll files of Babylon software and sometimes their program doesnt work
i have to say i installed oxford dic too but i didnt like it .it has some promblems for search when i wanted to search some words it closed suddenly
(i mean is their sofware not oxford )
my friend its better u switch to babylon for english to english or english to persian
and u can install many dic on it
for example i have 180 database it's great isnt it?
if u have other question i'll be glad to help u
take care

LeBron

well I think the best one is Babylon cuz u can look up the words either in english 2 english or english 2 farsi
It can also connect to Wikipedia Meriam Webster and Oxfrd sites in order to get u extra info about the word ur trying to look up.

Last night I was watching a movie called Little Fish (2005) starring Cate Blanchett ,Sam Neill and Hugo Weaving and I knew that it was an Australian movie and The accent is therefore is Australian but it was very similar to British Accent ...can someone tell me what's difference between this two accent? ..L

A r c h i
11-01-2008, 13:21
welll,British accent is British accent with all those nice pronunciation:31:, but as far as I know the difference is the speed, Australians talk much more faster than British people. So a bit hard to understand what are they talking about. That's the difference

Any other idea?l

peyman1987
11-01-2008, 20:22
In Australian accent they pronounc 'a' like 'ai'.
For example they pronounce 'late' like 'lait'

It means they pronounce it
لایت

That's the most important difference I've seen.

Hi all

The Australian accent has had a very strong cockney influence because in 1788 the British found a penal colony in New South Wales and cockneys of London and other large English cities were sent there as convicts but later they joined the settlers of the region and influenced the language definitely.

(The most obvious difference is the vowels pronunciation, I can say, and also some spellings.)

Good luck :11:

pronunciations of "504 word.." book is american or british?

A r c h i

Well, I think American accent is much easier than the British one, and if you learn that, you'll learn British too. By the way there's no difference in pronunciations, accents are different, so 504 is just the right pronunciation.

دوستان عزیز،توجه کنید که فارسی نوشتن در بخش زبان ممنوعه!!!!!!!!!!!

Dear friends.
I should warn you that writing persian is forbidden in this room, I'm so sorry to tell you that this topic will be closed soon.
In my opinion if you want to learn English basically and very well, you have to attend Daily English classes or at least hire a private English tutor to teach you English. You should be in the place that people speak English so that you'll learn it much better. Watching movies carefully. writing all your notes and diaries in English will be a great help.
And about grammar , I should say that without grammar you can't learn anything. It's right that they don't have grammar tests in Toefl or Ielts, but you have to know grammar in order to write and speak correctly.

Participating in the topic of this room and write and read at least 2 sentences in English will be a great help to improve your English.

you should expand your vocabularies by reading and listening all the time.

Wish you luck:11:l

Toefl PBT is rarely taken , so we generally talk about IBT, and if you have read his sentences completely, he had mentioned that he didn't need grammar, so from this sentence you can understand that he meant IBT version

Thanks

:46:Hi dear, actually writing in Farsi is forbidden so I write in English first then I translate it to Farsi
For entrance exam(God damn Konkoor:19:). Beside some lousy books like Dino Zendegi, Arbic and some others which are familiar with I suggest you to study "504 essential words". a very useful book which will be helpful, sth fierce:46:. I also recommand Grammar in use(Advance or Upper intermediate):5:By the way I forgot, yr own schools books are also good but they're not enough.:41:l
But the most important thing is that you have to be good at English, otherwise you'll face some problems at university, bcuz at university they never teach you English, they teach you Translation or Litretaure or instruction( According to yr major):46:l
And ome more thing, if you are good at English, there is no need to study different kinda English books. Bcuz the English tests of Konkoor is easy for the students who are good at it:20:l
:11:Good lcuk

Upper Intermediate.

That's okay, Well about the numbers of questions beats me:41: But as far as I remember 10 or 15 quetions for grammar not more than 15 and maybe 25:31: but no 25 no HAMOON 15:31:l.
By the way let me tell you, last summer I took part in English entrance exam and I hadn't studied any thing:31:and bcuz of that my percentage in Persian, arabic and Dino Zendegi was awful but my English was about 85 percent( For state univ) so I couldn't get accepted in State Uni and the only part which was hard for me was Comprehension, there were two or three readings which had so many difficult words and that was really hard for me and bcuz of that I sadi 504 is really useful but as I remember Grammar and other parts were peace of cake, I think your English is good enough so dun worry for the Grammar quetions just improve yr vocabulary and whatever you think you are not good at.
And about Azad Entranc exam, I should say it was duck soup, even the Persian and Dino zendegi questions were easy so if you have no problem with Azad uni I should say there is no need to study:27: but for state university specially if you want to be accepted in Tehran universities you have to make yrself ready:46:.l

HI every one. I opened up this topic to help the other friend who are facing this problem(inculing me) so I hope other friends help me up: I lilst some major problem which we have during some native ones speak:
1- they speak very fast: it sounds a very big problem at first you want to start in English. I suggest you go around and find some native speakers in English and aske them to speak slowly with you or you can reduce down the English movies to listen who the spell up the word and don't forget more practice earns more experience.
we firs will disucss about the first problem and then I will go ahead one by one to resolve the others. so I am waitting for your respond.

Hello my friends

Can you explain what different between (Bundle) and (Bunch) words, and show me your describe with example. I confused for use in sentence.
A Bundle of Newspaper or A Bunch of Newspaper?
A Bunch of Flowers or A Bundle of Flowers?
Or Both of them No different?
Thankful

Dear Friend

Bundle is usually wrapped or rolled.

Bunch is a general word of this definition and can be used for any purpose.

But for flowers we usually use bouquet of flowers

I give you some examples

A bunch of my friends made a birthday party for me
I bought a bouquet of flowers for her -you can say " a bunch of flower" too, because "bunch" can be used instead of any the other synonyms
I packed all papers then I wrapped them with a beautiful ribbon and made a bundle

Good luck and Happy Studying

سلام
امروز رفتم یه دیکشنری Advanced American Dictionary LONG MANگرفتم منتها علایم تلفظاش یه خورده فرق داره
یه سی دی دیکشنری LONG MAN Dictionary Of Contemporary English هم دارم مثلا تلفظ لغت Contemporary رو توی اولی به شکل
kənˈtɛmpəˌrɛri
و توی دومی هم به شکلی نوشته که نتونستم اینجا کپی کنم مثلا به جای ɛ نوشته e
حالا کدومش درسته؟

unartig

ببین این مربعها شاید مشکل فونتی باشه اما دیکشنریهای آنلاینی هم هست که تلفظ هم داره

Feron
05-08-2008, 22:17

Dear my friends
I am preparing for IELTS exam and for boosting my vocab up I have chosen English vocab in use(advanced) by Maccarthy
but after studying 25 units I doubted that if it is really need to know all of this formal and unusual words.
so experts of IELTS please tell me if it is necessary to study this book or studying the books like 504, build your vocab or essential word for the TOEFL is enough ( I read them all) nevertheless I should get 7.5 in IELTS
Sincerely yours
M.R.B

Your vocab is not your problem
in order to get 7.5 you should improve your skills, not your vocab

as I told you before first play try IELTS 4 and tell me your score
then I will teach you how to improve your skills

good luck
