The victim Xiao Jinpeng lost conscience and collapsed when the mobile phone exploded all of a sudden. The reason behind the explosion was that it had apparently been exposed to high temperatures.
Though it’s known that the exploded phone was a Motorola one, it has not yet been confirmed if the battery was an original Motorola battery.
According to a Motorola spokes, it was “highly unlikely” that one of our products had been to blame; however, we are cooperating with the authorities to determine the exact cause of the accident. The joint local police and the Jinta County Public Security Bureau initial investigation report revealed that the blast was so severe that Xiao ended up with broken ribs and battery fragments pierced his heart, which finally resulted in his death.
Currently, police officials are in the process of studying whether the battery had some quality flaws.
In the meanwhile, Chinese officials issued advisory to mobile phone users to reduce phone calls and also use batteries only from reputable and trusted manufacturers.
Fake batteries are very widespread in poorer areas, where people use their handsets longer and have to replace their batteries more often. In fact over 10 million fake handset batteries may be produced each year in China, which is the world’s biggest mobile market by users, with about 15 percent exported, mostly to developing nations in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, said Yang Yuxing, an analyst at researcher BDA China Ltd.
