VMware Workstation یک نرم افزار آزاد شبیه ساز است که امکان مجازی سازی و اجغFیگ؆رم افزارها را در یک سکوی سیستم عاملی بدون وابستگی به ملزومات نصب یا پیکربندی نرم افزار فراهم می کند.
VMWare یک ماشین مجازی را با استفاده از نسخه های VMWare Workstation ،GSX Server یا ESX روی یک سکوی سیستم عاملی مانند لینوکس پیاده سازی می کند که نسخه Workstation آن برای کامپیوترهای رومیزی مناسب است و قابلیت اجرا و پیاده سازی چندین سیستم عامل روی یک سخت افزار را دارد.
از دیگر ویژگی های این برنامه، کارایی فوق العاده و استفاده از ابزارهای بهینه سازی منابع سیستمی مانند حافظه است، چون سرویس بسیاری از نرم افزارها فقط برای ویندوز اکس پی ارائه شده است، برای اجرای آن در لینوکس یا دیگر سیستم عاملها مجبور به اجرای ویندوز اکس پی به صورت مجازی در لینوکس یا دیگر سیستم عاملها هستیم که برای این منظور از برنامه VMWare Player استفاده می کنیم.
