    Animal Crossing - Wild World
    Asphalt Urban GT 2

    Castlevania - Portrait of Ruin
    Final Fantasy III
    Mario Kart DS
    New Super Mario Bros
    Super Mario 64 DS
    Tomb Raider - Legend
    Ultimate Spider-Man
    Yoshi's Island DS

    1.0 - Getting Up & Running
    ==========================
    1.1 Memory Card
    ---------------
I use a SanDisk II Ultra 1GB card. Others may work - but I have no experience of them. I also use the enclosed card reader - I've had no problems with this.
    1) Place card in card reader
    2) Plug into PC usb slot
    3) Format card
    Open My Computer
Right click on the new removable drive which appears (in my case e
Select Format... from the drop down menu
Select FAT from the File System drop down
Give it a nice name (eg My M3)
Click Start - and confirm it'll wipe everything on it.
You are now ready to start copying files to your memory card.

    1.2 DS Software
    ---------------
The best place to start is with the files from the CD. Most of it you do not need. Go to the system v x.xx folder - then into your language folder. (In my case this was d:\system v1.00\English) In this location you will see 2 files called _DS_MSHL.NDS and _DS_MENU.DAT and a folder called shell. Copy both these files and the folder to the root of your memory card. The main software has now been installed. You should however check here
    for any updates.
    1.3 Updating the Console Software
    ---------------------------------
Version 1.02 has just been released. Download the relevant language zip file and extract it to wherever you want. You will then need to copy across these files to your memory card - overwriting the existing ones. Updating your software is as simple as that.
    1.4 Skinning
    ------------
The look of your software can be changed via a new skin. This is really simply to do. Each skin is 4 bmp images, called logo, icons, bckgrd_1 and bckgrd_2. They are all 256*192 pixels. There is a great site to find them and download them
You can even upload your own.
Create a folder in the root of the card called _system_ and place these 4 bmp files in this folder. It's that easy.
    1.5 Putting Games/Apps/Music etc on
    -----------------------------------
We now need to put some content on the memory card. Rather than just chuck everything in the same place - I like to use a nice directory structure to keep things tidy. On my current card I have
Applications - For things like DS Browser, Beup etc
Games - For DS Roms and other games
Literature - For text and books
    Music - For MP3s
    Video - For compatible movies
Pictures - For any images I want
Below each of these I also like to keep each game or app in a separate folder. I chose to do this so the game save and game are in their own directory. I can then put text files relating to each game in this folder to include hints and tips or instructions etc. I find this method the best for organising. Eg for the game Mario Kart
<root>\Games\Mario Kart\ and in this folder I have the game file (or ROM) Mario Kart.nds, the save file it creates Mario Kart.sav and also some hints and tips I've included, Mario Kart Tips.txt
NB Some applications require folders or files in the root of your card. However there is a nice way of hiding these from the DS when viewing. Files and folders you do not wish to see when using the game launcher can be hidden from view using the file/folder attributes.
For example - we do not need to see the _system_ folder in the game launcher. It contains nothing we're interested in. So right click on the _system_ folder and go to Properties. Check Hidden and click OK - and allow to propagate through all sub-directories and files. This will now be hidden from the launcher and neaten the GUI up. I have also done this with the folder shell and the _DS* files too.
    1.6 First Launch
    ----------------
OK - so we now have the latest software on the memory card, along with a nice intuitive directory structure and have hidden system files/folders to save cluttering up the GUI. It's now time to boot the card for the first time and check it out. Safely eject the USB reader from the Windows taskbar and carefully remove the memory card. Carefully slot this memory card into the M3 Simply casing and then insert into your DS. Turn on DS! You should be taken immediately to the launch screen, via a quick "Loading..." screen. From here you can select Games, Media or GBA boot. NB if you have added a custom skin you will see that now!
    1.7 Launching Games/Apps
    ------------------------
    Select the Game menu option.
You will then see a list of your viewable folders. In my case
Applications, Games, Literature, Music, Pictures and Videos. (NB while you cannot use this menu to view pictures/video/text or play music, they are still shown. If you hide these too you can never use them in other apps!)
Using the +pad scroll to Games - then press A or touch the directory button on the bottom screen. You will then see all your game folders. Scroll to the game you want - and then press A or the touch screen. You then scroll to the .nds file and again press A or hit the touch screen. If you need to go up a directory just scroll to the .. and press A or touch screen.
Basically all you're doing is navigating your directory structure to find .nds files which you can run. When you decide to launch one, if it's the first time you've run it, it will say, "Can't find SAV for this file, do you want to create it?". Every game or app you run can create a SAV file. This is where you DS saves your progress to - so pretty important. Select OK and this creates the relevant file - in the same location as the .nds file. (you can now see why I like my directory structure) When you run this game/app again, since this .sav file exists, it will not ask this question.
The game/app will then load for a second or two then launches. Perfect.
1.8 Other Bits on the Game Menu
    -------------------------------
In the top left of the screen is sun icon. Press this or use L shoulder button to adjust the brightness.
In the top right these is a red button. Press this or use R shoulder button to toggle in game reset. If this is green, this allows you to press L+R+A+B+X+Y simultaneously within a game to return to the main M3 Simply Menu. This may or may not work with all games, hence the ability to toggle on and off. Personally I leave it off, and when I finish a game switch off with the switch.
    1.9 Viewing Pics/Video/Text and MP3
    -----------------------------------
This time instead of select the Game option from the main M3 Screen, select Multimedia. (ie the middle button). This launches Moonshell - a well known multimedia app. (NB an error screen flashes up when you launch this, this is a well known issue, and just ignore it. It works fine). You will then see the same directories you had before, however this time you can use the launcher to guide your way to any media files you want. (NB to select use A)
I will not go into how Moonshell works, or how to skin it, or many controls. It's all fairly intuitive. To exit any file just click the x in the top right hand corner etc.
When you're done you have to turn off. There is no "back to main menu" option.
    1.10 Booting the GBA slot
    -------------------------
As I have no GBA games I've not tried it. But I belive it boots whatever is in the GBA slot if you select this. I have the browser RAM pack in mine and if I chose it, the screen goes white and freezes!
    1.11 Nintendo DS Browser
    ------------------------
This will only work if you have the original browser RAM pack in the GBA slot, or if you have a supercard with RAM in, or M3 with RAM in which plug into your GBA slot. There is no other way. I use the original RAM pack, and it works fine. If you are using other flash carts with memory, you need to use the patched version of the browser rom, which can be found in the usual places. I have not tried this method as I do not own a suitable flash cart.
    1.12 Quick conclusion
    ---------------------
OK there we have it. Dead easy isn't it. The main thing is, you can play about with locations and directories however you want, if it all goes wrong then just start again. This above will get you up and running. Below are how to convert videos, trim roms, how to patch homebrew and instructions for each bit of software I use and have running.
    ====================
    2 - Bundled Software
    ====================
    2.1 ROM Trimming
    ----------------
I never do this as I really don't see the point. However, it is a way of saving space on your memory card, by removing all the blank space in the .nds file. On the CD look in the M3DS Simply Rom Trimmer Tool for instructions.
    2.2 Converting video
    --------------------
To play video on the DS you need to convert them to .dpg files (usually they'll be .mpg, or .avi files) The CD provides a simle and effective way to do this. Open the moonshell-x.xx folder, and go into the dpgtools folder. Launch dpgenc.exe, and set the Language. You can play with the options to get the best looking video, but basically all you do is drag the video you want to convert into the white box and wait until it says done! The DPG will appear wherever you have asked it to place it. This can be changed using the Change button. It may create other files in this location as it converts - don't worry, just wait until it says complete and creates a .dpg file.
There are other tutorials on converting video - using other packages, and people are getting very good results. Check here for some good guides

    ============
    3 - Homebrew
    ============
    3.1 Overview
    ------------
Put simply homebrew is the name for all non official (be is DS/PSP/XBOX) programs which people write in the spare time and distribute round the web for people to use. Many people have written some great homebrew apps and games in the past, and it's a thriving scene. The DS homebrew scene is great and there are loads of new apps and games being developed.
However - each flashcart, be it M3 Simply, SuperCard Lite etc all use different ways of accessing the memory card, and as such, if the homebrew software needs to access the memory card to save info etc, if must be tailored for your specific card or device. Without getting too technical (if you want to know more let ask, I make a living as a programmer) lots of homebrew authors are now using Chishm's DLDI interface. This means is the homebrew supports this, we can pacth the .nds file with the appropriate DLDI library and get it working for our cart. Great news is, the best homebrew apps are already using it, so lets get onto to how we can patch and get these up and running.
Most homebrew comes with a gba file and an nds file - for use with appropriate flash cart. All the M3 Simply is interested in is the .nds file. You can forget the other one.
    3.2 Patching
    ------------
First off we need the patcher, and the correct library. These can be found here
You need the DLDI for the M3 Simply, and you also need the correct dlditool for your OS. I use the command line Win32 tool - but there is a nice GUI version of this now if you want to use this.
Whatever you use, the process is the same. The patcher simply takes the .nds file and uses the dldi file to patch it with the correct IO commands for that particular device.
When it's done - you can simply chuck the newly patches .nds file on the memory card and run it!
    3.3 WiFi
    --------
I will not go into the whys and wherefores of networking here, if you are interested there any many many resources on the web. However, many pieces of homebrew software require internet access through the Nintendo Wifi. Before you can run any of this, you will need to have configured your internet access through a WiFI enabled game (eg Tetris, Wild World etc). If you have access through these games then all should be OK. The only other thing to point out - is that some of these apps apparently do not work with DHCP. To this end, you might want to consider setting your DS to use a static IP. I've no issues running any of the software in the next section using static IP. I've not tested with DHCP, you may want to try and play. I also use a normal WiFi access point in my house - rather than the Nintendo USB stick.
    ==========================
    4 - Specific Homebrew Apps
    ==========================
While finding homebrew apps and messing about with them, I've found documentation to be at best sketchy, and I can't blame the authors. I hate writing documentation! However, I thought I'd share my experiences in the hope it might assist you.
    -----------------------------------
    4.1 Beup 0.3 - MSN Messenger Client
    -----------------------------------
This is a small MSN style app which will allow you to chat to friends on your DS. This can be found here
    4.1.1 - Installation
    --------------------
This app is not coded with the DLDI interface however, so as such you cannot get it to store your log in credentials or use avatars etc. However it does work and you can chat fine, you just have to type in your email address and password each time you wish to use it. Hopefully in the future it will incorporate the DLDI interface.
When you unzip/unrar the folder, all you need to find the directory called No-Fat, in here is a file called Beup Live 0.3.nds. This is the only file you need.
Copy this into onto you memory card in any appropriate place. I use <root>\Applications\MSN Messenger\
    4.1.2 - Usage
    -------------
Assuming you have set up WiFi correctly, when it launches, it will auto find your network setup and display it on the top screen.
If your display is blurry, then the bottom check box helps fix this. The other check boxes however are irrelevant as this version without the correct IO routines patched in, will not save your settings.
Enter your username/password using the touchpad, and then select your status. Then click connect. It will then try and connect, and give you info of its status on the top screen. It is worth pointing out, occasionally for no reason it seems to fail right at the end with "SSL connect failed" - just retry a few times and I'll connect. If you get to this point, everything is set up OK, it's not you!
Once connected it will display your contacts in the bottom screen, who is online and offline and then just get chatting! It's all self explanatory.
    ---------------------------------------------------
4.2 DSLiveWeather (Vesper) - Live weather reporting
    ---------------------------------------------------
This nice app will provide you with weather information and forecasts. You can set up several locations at once and it will store the info for you so if you're not in WiFi locations you can still view previously saved data. Perfect for weekends away. It can be found here
    4.2.1 Installation
    ------------------
This app is supported by DLDI so first off unzip and patch the DSLiveWeather.nds file, as previously described. You can now transfer the patched .nds file to your memory stick, in your desired location. Again I use my Application directory, and have a folder called Weather which is sits in.
You will also need to create a new folder in the root of your card called DSLiveWeather. It is a good idea to hide this folder, so it doesn't show up in the game launcher. All it will store are your location profiles and the stored forecasts, which will be unreadable anyway.
    4.2.2 Usage
    -----------
On first usage it should launch, and you'll get some info on the top screen.
    WiFi ready!
    LibFat ready!
    And then 3 errors.
These errors occur since you've not set up any profiles, or had any forecasts yet, and as such the files do not exist. Don't worry, we'll create them now, so you won't get these in future.
First things first you need to find your location code. As I live in London, we'll use this as an example. Goto
In the search box, type in your closest city, in my case London and click GO. It then brings up some suggestions - I'm London UK, so I click this link. This gives me a weather report and forecast, which is what you'll get on the DS eventually. However what we need is the location code. Look to the address bar and it should end something like
    ler/local/UKXX0085?from=search_city
This 8 character code is what we need. UKXX0085 means London, UK. Each location has a unique identifier, and that's what we want.
Armed with this code, lets go back to the DS. Enter a profile name, I'll call this London. (normal keyboard, when done click the green tick) The Location ID is then UKXX0085. The other two fields are OK. If you press left and right on the +pad, you can add more profiles. Once your profile data is types in - press the start button. In the top screen you should now get the message "Profiles saved".
Let's now get some weather! Use the L R shoulder buttons, or the touchpad to navigate the tabs at the top, (Settings/Currently/Forecast). Go to Currently. In the top right - just below the sun icon, will be a grey smiley. He's grey as you're not connected. Give him a press, and you'll start to connect. Watch the top screen for info, "Conecting to AP.... Success" - he then turns happy and you get a green tick. You're now on the internet. Press the green tick to get the current weather info. It will then connect to the weather server, download the report and save it.
Change to the forecast page and press the green tick, and you'll download the forecast for that area. You can scroll left and right on the +pad to change profile and download that information too. Once done, click the smiley face to disconnect.
Turn your DS off, and back on again, and launch the application again. Those error messages now disappear and load the information you've just saved.
NB the small sun icon in the top right is the DS Lite brightness controller.
    -----------------------------------
4.3 DSOranize - Small Organiser App
    -----------------------------------
    To quote from the author
" DSOrganize is meant as a homebrew organizer application for the Nintendo DS that should have come built in in the first place. It is by no means comparible to a full-fledged organizer such as a palm, and it is not planned to become an operating system, video player, or anything similar."
    It can be found here
    4.3.1 Installation
    ------------------
The latest version 2.45b supports DLDI, so runs fine on the M3 Simply, as long as it's patched. Download the .zip file and unzip it. Again we need to patch the .nds file, so use the DSOrganize.nds file and patch away. This can then be transferred to your desired location on the memory card. <root>\Applications\Organiser (Yes, I'm English, and I'll use and s not a z!)
You also then need to copy the DSOrganize folder to the root of your memory card too. (I suggest not changing the name of this one, as the program looks in this exact location!) I have also removed all the irrelevant folders from this, (todo, lang) and also the Espanola language file in the help. It's also a good idea to hide this folder in the Windows file system, so it won't appear in your game loader menu.
In this folder there is also a config.ini file. Open this up in notepad and have a look. It basically controls how the program works, which screen it displays first etc, and also your IRC connection strings. It's well commented, play about with it and see what it all does.
It is then ready to go.
    4.3.2 Usage
    -----------
I'm not going to go into any detail here - because I don’t really use it. Not because it's rubbish but because I use my phone for many of the functions. However it is very useful for the calculator, IRC and the browser. From the browser you can also look at pictures, read text, and even play MP3s. Things just work with this app, and although it's a bit redundant if you use your phone to sync with Outlook etc, every DS should have this app! There is also a great FAQ on the website above.
    -----------------------------------------
4.4 NDSMail v0.54b - Email and RSS reader
    -----------------------------------------
Although still in development, it does what it says on the tin! Check your email accounts, and get RSS feeds delivered to your DS over WiFi - perfect for keeping up to date while on the move.
    It can be found here

The latest experimental version (0.54 Beta seems to work well)
    4.4.1 Installation
    ------------------
Download and unzip. You'll need to patch the ndsmail_fb.nds, and then you can transfer is to you memory card, and put it where you like.
Also in the zip file is a file called NDSMAIL.XML - and it's worth having a look at before we transfer it. Open it up using notepad or similar text editor. It's a bog standard simple XML file which strores your email account info and RSS feed info. You can find out what these values should be by looking at your existing mail programs or by information given to you by your ISP etc. It's not within the scope to tell you these values. However, SSL is NOT working in this version so forget using googlemail. You can also just put links to your RSS feeds in the correct section.

    4.4.2 Usage
    -----------
First off the program will search for an access point, and once found, prompt you with a box asking if you'd like to use FAT or not. I've never had a problem so select yes. If you select no, the program will still work, however it will not read from the XML file, and you'll have to type in the info on the DS, and nor will it save this info, or save the feeds or your mail.
It will then say it could not find files for Inbox Outbox and Feeds. Just click OK each time. You're now in the main program. Inbox is displayed and you can look at the Feeds tab or Outbox tab by the touch screen.
Let's try and connect to get mail. On the mail screen click Transmit. It will then use the setting in your XML file to retrieve your mail. It will then ask to store your inbox, your outbox and your feeds. Click yes each time. Any mail will appear in your inbox if successful. Click on the feeds tab and click transmit and you'll download your RSS feeds. Again it will ask you to store your inbox/outbox/feeds. I'm guessing this is still in development. You can then read your new downloaded feeds. Click New to create a new mail, and the rest is self explanatory!
Now, to neaten the complete installation, put the momery card back on the computer and look at the new files NDSMail has created in the root of your card. INBOX, OUTBOX and FEEDS. These are the files it keeps your inbox/outbox and RSS feed data in. It's now a good idea to use Windows and set these files to hidden - again to stop them showing up in your DS apps. Not necessary but makes things neater I think.
    --------------------------
    4.5 DSFTP 2.4 – FTP Server
    --------------------------
For me - this is one of the best pieces of homebrew written. It allows your DS to run as an FTP server on your WiFi network, allowing you to browse your memory card while it's still in the M3 card in your DS. It's perfect for tweaking config files, and greating files and folders etc for use with other homebrew apps. While the data rate is slow, it's very affective with smaller files. Copying large roms I'd suggest the card reader! You can download it here

    4.5.1 Installation
    ------------------
NB this program has everything you need to incorporate an FTP server in your own homebrew. However for the purposes of this document, we're looking at using it as a standalone FTP server.
There are installation instructions on the site, however I found there were not always clear. So I'll include my setup, and what I did. This should get you working at least and you can then play with some settings if you wish to.
Download, unzip, patch and copy to your memory stick in your chosen location.
Create a folder in the root of your card called data. In data, create 2 folder called settings and logs. In logs create a text file, and rename it to In the settings file create a new text file, and open it up.
This file will contain all the connection and setting information. There is a handy guide to what each function does on the website, so check this out first. However, below is my config file to help you get started.
    logfile /data/logs/ftp.log
    loglevel 4
    timeout 300
    portrangestart 9000
    portrangeend 9999
    screensaver 60
    wakeonlog true
    user dslite
    pass dslite
    root /
    home /
    write true
    boot true
    end user
save the text file, and rename it to
So on your memory card you will have
<root>\data\settings\ftp.conf - which is a text file containing the above
<root>\data\logs\ftp.log - which is a blank file ready to receive your logs.
NB the username and password in the above configuration file. These are what you will be using to connect in a minute.
    4.5.2 Usage
    -----------
Fire up the application, and it should display a screen in the top window. The server runs on port 21 by default, and shows you the other config file settings you've chosen. It will then search for your WiFi settings and connect you if they are all set up OK, and more imposrtantly show you the IP address on the bottom if successful. This is the IP address of your DS which is sitting on your network.
Next fire up your FTP client. I use FlashFXP and have only tested it with this. However I don’t see why other will not work. (However in my experience of FlashFXP they must support PASV-passive mode)
Fire up a session to the DS IP address as the host name, using the username and password set in the config file, in this example dslite/dslite. Set the system to use PASV if you can. In FlashFXP this is done on the advanced tab checking on the alternative methods for connection for both uploading and downloading.
It seems to take a couple of goes to connect - but then it does - and works perfectly. As mentioned the upload and download speeds are not great - I experience ~30KB/s but it's more than enough for on the fly changes to your homebrew config files!
