View Full Version : Thin Section of Minerals

Amphibolite - Cross polarized light - Godin Tepe - Iran
Amphibole Group
Sharred Properties:
Crystal system: Monoclinic
Twinning: simple, lamellar, common
Cleavage: two good at about 60 or 120o
Relief: moderate, moderate to high
Occurrence: metamorphic rocks
It is often more convenient in pottery thin-sections to group the amphibole group together. They can be identified collectively by the distinct cleavages and it is probably preferable in most cases to simply say whether the inclusion is pleochroic, and if so what is the nature of the pleochroism, or that it is not pleochroic at all. This is preferable to unreliable identifications, the most common being identifying a red pleochroic amphibole as the relatively rare oxyhornblende, when it is more likely to be an ordinary green-pleochric amphibole which has been altered in the firing.

Plagioclase - same as above - rotated to display areas of extinction
Plagioclase
Na[AlSi3O8] - Ca[Al2Si2O8]2
Crystal system: Triclinic
Refractive index: 1.527-1.590
Birefringence: 0.10-0.13
Cleavage: 1 perfect, 1 good intersecting at angle
Twinning: lamellar twinning
Colour in PPL: colourless
Pleochroism: -
Relief: low
Distinction: lamellar twinning distinctive, untwinned plagioclase is practically impossible to distinguish from untwinned potassic feldspars
Occurrence: most abundant mineral in basic and intermediate igneous rocks, widespread in metamorphic rocks
كسي واقعا عكس نداره بگذاره ؟
لاقل سئوال بپرسيد
Serpentine
Mg3[Si2O5](OH)4
Crystal system: Monoclinic
Refractive index: 1.532-1.574
Birefringence: 0.004-0.007 (antigorite), 0.006-0.008 (lizardite), 0.013-0.017 (chrysotile)
Cleavage: chrysotile fibrous, others one perfect
Twinning: occasional
Colour in PPL: colourless to pale green, often oxidizes to red in pottery
Pleochroism:
Relief: low
Distinction: lower birrefringence than micas, chlorite higher RI
Occurrence: altered ultrabasic rocks, especially from ophiolites

ميرمكيت بافتي است كه از رشد تداخلي كاني هايي مثل كوارتز و فلدسپار حاصل مي شود ولي برخلاف بافت گرافيكي اين بافت كرمي شكل است.

Thin section of rock brought back to earth by Apollo 12 mission
An idea of the mineralogy and texture of a lunar sample can be achieved by use of color microphotos. This thin section is Apollo 12 lunar sample number 12057.27, under polarized light. The lavender minerals are pyrexene; the black mineral is ilmenite; the white and brown, feldspar; and the remainder, olivine.

0X, cross polarized light
Notice the variable birefringence of the pyroxenes. In part this is caused by composition variations in the pyroxene.

A. A low-magnification photomicrograph of palagonitized hyaloclastite. The altered glass shards are not vesicular. Note zoning of palagonitic alteration in several shards. B. Another portion of the same hyaloclastite showing palagonite rims surrounding relict fresh brown basaltic glass. The glass contains almost no crystallites. C. Detail of zoning of palagonite of one altered glass shard seen in A, center left. D. Tiny and numerous plagioclase and clinopyroxene crystallites in a glass shard in the hyaloclastite that experienced incipient crystallization. E. A slightly more crystalline glass shard similar to D but with a pale-brown spherulitic overgrowth on many of the crystallites
