The Human Touch

Episode 060
June 08, 1999
Luke has had enough… Bron has been avoiding him and he needs to know where he stands in her life. Confronting her, Luke demands to know why she insists on messing with his emotions. Despite attempts to avoid the real issue, Bron is faced with an insistent Luke—he wants her to let him know what she wants, needs, expects from him. Bron takes that ultimatum with her on her paramedic shift.
Things soon become clearer when she and Ben attend a motor vehicle accident and find an old couple injured in their campervan. When Donald refuses to leave the woman he has loved all his adult life, Bron is shown the meaning of true love. The elderly couple dies together as they would have wanted, and Bron realises that true love still exists in this messed-up world. But does it exist for her?
Von is not happy with the arrival of her next-door neighbour on the ward. Hazel lives alone, is an alcohol abuser, and Von does her best to keep away from the situation as the rest of the staff debate the rights and wrongs of treating someone who is so obviously her own worst enemy. Mitch, however, is not about to give up on Hazel and puts pressure on Luke to help him ignore hospital policy and operate on the woman. Someone has to reach out and help this woman… is Luke the man to do it?
Jard is smitten—in the professional sense—by the arrival of an unidentified man who does not seem to have a friend in the world. But the patient’s arrival on the ward seems to coincide neatly with the outbreak of several minor fires, and Jared soon realises that his patient is a little too handy with a box of matches. Jared has to take the man with him to be constantly supervised while waiting for a psychiatric evaluation.
While everyone else is trying hard to reach out to their patients, Connor is doing his damnedest to shut his up. Ralph takes incessantly, about everything, but like so many people in the world is largely dismissed. Given everything else that is happening on the ward today, Connor is compelled to take some time to get to know Ralph and is surprised to find he has a lot to offer.
With: Michael Angus as John Aherne, Pat Bishop as Hazel Masterton, Peter Carmody as Ralph Manning, Julie Herbert as Beatrice Simpson, Brendan Higgins as Dr. Stafford, Celia Ireland as Regina Butcher, Josh Picker as Paul Mitchell, Colin Taylor as Donald Simpson
Disaster Plan

Episode 061
June 15, 1999
Once again, Ward 17 is being used as the hospital "garbage ward." An unidentified male patient who attempted suicide is sent up from Emergency. He is believed to have taken a non-lethal dose of a sleeping pill. What starts out to be a straightforward babysitting job turns nasty when the patient suddenly arrests and dies. Von and Steph are in the process of laying out his body when the pathology lab puts through an urgent call to Mitch. The blood tests indicate the patient has swallowed a highly reactive agricultural chemical which has reacted with the fluid in his stomach. The dead man’s body is consequently leaching toxic fumes. As a result, Ward 17 needs to be evacuated.
A disaster plan is put into action. When all the patients are removed from the ward, the staff themselves are shepherded outside and ordered to take blood from and examine each other. All are told to be on the lookout for possible side effects of exposure. Realising they are dealing very much with an unknown quantity, Steph worries that her fertility may be affected.
When Connor learns that his brother Greg has been admitted to All Saints, he is reticent about making contact. The pair has not seen each other for over a year and their relationship is far from rosy. Connor swallows his pride and arranges for his brother to come to Ward 17, hoping that this could be his chance to build bridges with his estranged sibling. But Greg’s antagonistic behaviour is not making things easy for either of them.
A newlywed couple begins to think they are never going to make the cruise they have booked for their honeymoon. The groom has been brought into All Saints on his wedding night following an asthma attack at the reception. Just when it looks like he is about to be discharged, he suffers another attack and Mitch has no option but to keep him under further observation. Then, when the evacuation happens, it really looks as if they will miss the boat.
Bron is disillusioned about her career in the ambulance service. She is frustrated that she is unable to use a lot of the skills she acquired during her years of nursing. But while she and Ben are transporting a patient from Ward 17 to St Angela’s, both her nursing and ambulance skills are required to help treat a fitting patient. This experience renews her commitment to the ambulance service and she decides to study for her Level 2 exams.
Sister Bernard again questions Terri about her commitment to All Saints and apparent lack of commitment to the Order’s community house. Terri is outraged to learn that Bernard has already taken the liberty of discussing the situation with the Superior General. To Bernard’s way of thinking, Terri needs to make a decision about what really is the priority in her life.
With: Celia Ireland as Regina Butcher, Betty Lucas as Sister Bernard, Gennie Nevinson as Mrs. Levine, John Noble as Dr. John Madsen, Terry Serio as Greg Costello, Grant Thompson as Matt Halliday, Gary Vincent as Trevor Johnson
Forget-Me-Knots

Episode 062
June 22, 1999
Bron nurses a patient who remembers her from an horrific car crash, but she has no memory of attending the accident. Connor tries to establish a relationship with his brother and can’t understand Greg’s rejection of him. Luke performs a simple tonsillectomy and then finds himself in a race against time to save his patient’s life. Terri meets with her Superior General and has to make major decisions about her future. Jared is concerned that he and Von may be developing symptoms of toxic gas poisoning.
Working on Ward 17 as an agency nurse, Bron is allocated a patient, Phil Oram, who has no memory of the accident in which he lost his wife and child. When he meets Bron he does remember something—Bron attended the accident as an ambulance officer. But while he remembers Bron, she has no memory of him, nor even of attending the scene.
Plagued with guilt that she could forget a patient, Bron is placed under greater pressure when she realises that every time Phil sees her, more memories are triggered. He reaches a point where he wants the memories to stop. He is tortured by the thought that his wife died while he was blaming her for the death of their son.
Unable to change patients, Bron is forced to help Phil come to terms with his memories. In the process, she starts to remember the accident and has to come to terms with the reason why she blocked that particular accident from her mind.
Terri meets with the Superior General of her Order. She expects support from her old friend, but instead is confronted with some unwelcome home truths. Terri is asked to consider living outside the community house for a while and is forced to make some major decisions about her future.
Luke performs a simple tonsillectomy on Zap McCafferty, a young singer and musician. Everything goes well in theatre but on his return to the ward Zap starts to display unusual symptoms. Luke is at a loss to understand what is wrong with his patient. He has to consider taking him back to theatre for an exploratory operation. Finally he uses all medical skills to diagnose a rare and life-threatening disease.
Jared is fearful that both he and Von may be starting to display ongoing symptoms as a result of being exposed to toxic chemical fumes. Mitch examines him, takes tests and is able to relieve him of his concerns. However, Von’s symptoms are not so easily explained.
Bron and Jared are not comfortable with Connor’s brother, Greg, staying in their house. Connor is trying desperately to rebuild his relationship with Greg and help him get his life back on track after the break-up of his marriage and the loss of his job. But Greg is being a less than gracious houseguest. When Jared comes home early from work he discovers why Greg’s life is on a downhill slide.
With: Raymond Donald as Geoff Mason, Celia Ireland as Regina Butcher, Peter Lamb as Neil Phillips, Jon Pollard as Zap McCafferty, Mary Regan as Superior General Trish Rawlins, Kellie Robertson as Ellie Oram, Terry Serio as Greg Costello
Shoot The Messenger

Episode 063
June 29, 1999
Teenaged twins Alan and Brett Cameron (originally seen in episode 39) suffer from cystic fibrosis and have been on a long waiting list for lung transplants. Their overall health has deteriorated recently with Alan bedridden at home with pseudomonas. Brett has the same condition but is not quite as acutely ill as his brother. Alan has been brought on to Ward 17 for treatment. The staff know Alan and his brother very well—they have been regular patients at All Saints all their lives, and they are extremely well-informed about their cystic fibrosis and its complications.
The twins are bonded in age, temperament and, most of all, their illness. Now, for the first time in their lives, they are going to be separated by something they never anticipated: good health. When a lung transplant becomes a possibility, one of them will have a ticket to health, leaving the other behind. This creates feelings of guilt, isolation and bitterness they never anticipated.
Meanwhile, Connor is having his own sibling problems. He has to decide what to do when Jared finally tells him he caught Connor’s brother Greg injecting heroin in the bathroom. Connor’s initial hope of helping his brother is shattered when he finds Greg stealing. But what can he do to help Greg when he won’t try to help himself?
Steph is nursing Seb Connelly, a sixteen-year-old Aboriginal kid from a small country town. Seb has relocated to Sydney on a football scholarship and contract and is in Ward 17 after an appendectomy. The chance discovery that he has only one kidney could have terrible repercussions for his career.
Terri’s excitement about living alone is counterbalanced by the potential hurdles in her new life away from the community. Fortunately Von is there to guide her.
Bron, who had apparently kicked the gambling demon, is in danger again. When Greg Costello steals her rent money she has to find a way to get some cash in a hurry.
With: Luke Carroll as Seb, Alexandra Fowler as Juliette McAllistair, Kevin Healy as Mr. Grattan, Celia Ireland as Regina Butcher, Kim Lewis as Megan Costello, Marshall Napier as Mick Mason, Terry Serio as Greg Costello
In With The New

Episode 064
July 06, 1999
Ben and Bron are called to a suburban house and soon realise that the occupant, although a fully grown man, is severely developmentally delayed. It takes the police’s arrival to gain entrance to the house, where the young man’s grandmother lies dead at the kitchen table. During the laying-out process, Thomas panics, runs from the house and is hit by a car. Although he is not badly injured, Bron feels responsible, and stays with him during his admission to Ward 17. Thomas clings to Bron as a familiar face and is comforted when she is back the following day as an agency nurse. He bonds with her but she just cannot manage to explain to him that his nanna is not coming back. Meanwhile, the hospital social worker assesses Thomas and decides to recommend to Community Services that Thomas should be institutionalised. Somehow Bron can’t bring herself to give up on the idea Thomas could have a brighter future than this.
Von is touched by the plight of one of her patients. Hilary is a middle-aged woman with terminal cancer who draws Von into her scheme to find a new companion for her husband, Owen. At first Von is helping with the ’interviews’ but it soon becomes clear to Hilary that Von could be the perfect candidate. And maybe Von is allowing herself to think the same way—it helps that she and Owen get on like a house on fire and have bonded over their memories of serving in Vietnam during the war.
Terri has moved from the community house into a very modest flat and invited her workmates around for a low-key celebration. But All Saints staff work hard and play hard and the ’few drinks’ look like turning into a full-on party—especially when Connor spikes the punch. And, after Mitch’s jokes about booking a stripper as a housewarming present, Terri is suspicious when he arrives with a police escort.
Jared is looking after a young diabetic man, Leo, who has gone on a bender. Mitch, although feeling sorry for the state the guy is in, has little time for people who refuse to take their treatment seriously. Jared suspects that something is amiss but then it is Mitch who finally gets the young man to tell the story of how he was raped.
With: Katrina Hobbs as Lily Vale, Celia Ireland as Regina Butcher, Peter Lamb as Neil Phillips, Kristian Schmid as Thomas
Second Chance

Episode 065
July 13, 1999
Bron is going all-out to help mentally disabled patient Thomas with his assessment for placement by Community Services. She believes he is capable of living in a share household with minimum supervision and this would help him develop further—rather than being institutionalised. But there is a major setback when Thomas is distressed by a casual shift nurse and then refuses to practise any of the life skills (feeding and dressing himself) which Bron has been helping him learn. Terri points out that Bron will just have to start over again but time is running out as the second assessment is due later in the day.
Ben and John are the ambos called out to a house by Kerri Williams. When they arrive, Kerri’s husband, Gareth, is unconscious on the floor as a result of a domestic argument. When Ben sees Kerri about to shake her crying baby, he intervenes. As Ben grabs the baby, Kerri falls. She ends up in Ward 17, feeling very much the victim despite her behaviour. Steph is shocked when she hears Kerri say she has been assaulted by an ambulance officer. Unaware that the woman has embroidered her story and that the ambulance officer is Ben, Steph encourages Kerri to report the incident. This results in a huge rift between husband and wife, with Ben accusing Steph of not knowing him at all if she thinks him capable of such behaviour.
Steph is left out on a limb when she discovers that Kerri has a history of ill-treatment of her children and was very likely to have been lying to cover her own actions. The episode ends with Ben telling Steph that he thinks the marriage is over.
Daniel Parker is a man in his 50s, recently divorced and with a new young girlfriend in her mid-20s. He is very optimistic as he goes into surgery for cancer of the bowel, choosing not to believe the condition will result in any permanent damage. When he wakes to find he has had a colostomy, he does not trust his young partner Kate to stand by him. And, rather than giving her a chance, he sets out to drive her away. Daniel focuses his hope on his ex-wife Angela—not considering she may also have moved on with her life since she ended the marriage.
With: Celia Ireland as Regina Butcher, Kristian Schmid as Thomas
Endgame

Episode 066
July 20, 1999
Luke’s problems with Neil’s case are compounded by having to supervise middle- aged intern, Dr. Ashok Patel. Luke immediately sizes him up as a dithering pedant. Even patient, Russel Woods, wonders whether Ashok knows what he is doing. And Jared finds himself in the unenviable position of trying to keep Luke, Ashok and Russell all happy, while at the same time trying to quell his own doubts about Ashok’s methods. But Ashok refuses to dismiss Russell’s breathing problems as asthma.
Bron and Ben are called out to a near-drowning and bring in teenager Cathy Maxwell. Cathy is brought up to Ward 17 and is put under Mitch and Steph’s care. She is a bright and talented girl and it looks like she will be able to be discharged quickly into the care of her loving parents. So the shocking and unpredictable actions he takes when no-one is looking causes Mitch to completely re-evaluate his treatment of her and land Steph in trouble.
Mitch has noted that Steph is "off-the-air" all day—no one is aware that Ben has walked out on her. Terri does her best to find out what is behind Steph’s behaviour but she is not ready to talk. Neither is Ben—but he is stuck on the job with the ever inquisitive Bron and it is not long before she starts putting the pieces of the puzzles together.
And Ward 17 has another new ward clerk. Tony Hurst is young and competent, with just the sort of bubbly personality that keeps the ward upbeat. He is a secure gay guy and while it is not a problem for him, it does seem to make Connor uncomfortable—and that encourages Tony to stir just that little bit more and consequently Connor to be a little more uptight.
With: Jake Blundell as Tony Hurst, Lara Cox as Cathy Maxwell, Brendan Higgins as Dr. Jerry Stafford, Peter Lamb as Neil Phillips, Monroe Reimers as Dr. Ashok Patel, Peter Whitford as Russell Woods

Mitch knows Ryan and Eileen Sullivan from the "old days" and his concern suggests Terri may be in for a difficult evening. Terri reluctantly extends and invitation to Mitch but it proves to be a wise move. As the evening progresses, so does Ryan’s mood—from avuncular father to aggressive bully. The mood swing is connected to Ryan’s heavy drinking. But Mitch is called back to the hospital and Terri has to deal with the end of the evening solo.
Her father’s anger is aimed at her moves for independence and he accuses her of betraying her calling. When he turns his anger on his wife, Terri fakes an illness to give her mother a reason for staying the night. The next morning, Terri spots bruises on her mother’s arms and realises that Ryan’s drunken bullying may extend to physical abuse. Mitch suspects the same thing but when he tries to raise the subject with Terri, she shuns it. It is not something she wants to admit or face.
Ben has left Steph and is back living with his parents. He has told Bron but no-one else knows. Ben and Steph are keeping their miserable secret, ashamed to admit their marriage has fallen apart. Ben takes refuge in work but even this seems to only underline his disenchantment with the so-called virtues… love, fidelity and human decency. But his professionalism rises above his anger at a young criminal, and he saves a life.
Working night shift, Steph encounters two motor vehicle accident victims, rammed while making love in their car. She chooses to place her own interpretation on this relationship, especially when the first word the female utters is her husband’s name. Steph may have lost true love but at least it is real for these two. She is disillusioned when she discovers the couple are adulterers, cheating on their respective partners. Her enthusiasm swings to anger and she is prepared to let the truth come out. However, she is outvoted by the rest of the staff who attempt a coverup as the male victim’s wife arrives. Unfortunately, the wife discovers the truth. It is ironic that she lays her bitterness on Stephanie. By the end of the episode, Ben and Steph have the opportunity to talk, to communicate how they really feel. But the moment is lost.
Connor is looking forward to a quiet night shift in Ward 17 but it is not to be. A post-op hernia patient, Billy, proves to be a chronic snorer, keeping the rest of the patients awake. While amusing at first (unless you happen to be a patient or a member of the suffering staff), it becomes potentially tragic. Connor suspects the patient is suffering from Sleep Apnoea, and his insight saves Billy’s life.
Mitch is summoned back when head injury patient Jeff Huxley collapses after a minor stumble. Von worries that the blame may be laid at her door. But Mitch diagnoses a slow bleeding spleen caused by the accident that gave Jeff the head injury.
On top of all this, Von knows that there is something seriously wrong with her. She is counting on Mitch to come up with the answer, but he cannot give it to her yet.

Mitch is forced to call Terri in to help when Mary’s mother turns up and seems even more horrified that a man might think about touching her daughter. Terri and Mitch are forced to work very closely together to unravel the mystery. The situation is further complicated when it is discovered that, while she looks fourteen, Mary is twenty-one and has a blood pressure level a middle-aged man would be worried about. When it is discovered that she has been feeding her young daughter steroids to avert the start of menstruation, Terri has to walk away.Bron and Ben have their hands full with a sad young man, Vince, who is desperate to prove his love to a woman called Tina. When it is discovered that the women is dead, Ben uses his own feelings for Steph to talk Vince out of hurting himself.Steph, still trying to make sense of her life, is saddled with a family who cares just a little too much. While their mother recovers from surgery, the family gather in a bedside vigil, making Steph’s life hell.
Connor, trying to cope with his continued wariness over the new gay ward clerk and run off his feet on a particularly busy day, is accused of stealing money from a patient’s wallet. Despite his protestations to the contrary, Connor can’t be sure if the money was there in the first place.
Jared’s patient is unconscious, stable and has an unusually large penis. The news spreads like wildfire through the ward and everyone but Connor seems impressed. Finally, unable to deny his curiosity, Connor sneaks in to have a look… only to have the patient wake up and catch him.

A Whole Lot To Lose

Episode 069
August 10, 1999

When Ben and Bron turn up with a patient who is desperately ill but refuses to enter the hospital, they present Luke with an opportunity to think outside the square and to meet what develops into a very personal challenge. The patient turns out to be an Anglican priest who is absolutely phobic about hospitals. After initially rejecting the challenge of this patient, Luke uses every angle he can think of to win the confidence of the man, even examining him in the hospital’s chapel as a first step on what is to be a difficult journey.
Terri, meanwhile, is dealing with the usual complications of an overworked ward, including the arrival of Stan Ridgeway’s mother for care and observation. The fact that Luke has seconded Jared to deal with his ex-officia patient doesn’t help matters at all.
She goes down to the chapel, only to discover that Luke has determined the necessity of urgent surgery for the priest—he has a potentially fatal dissecting aortic aneurism. Terri becomes a part of Luke’s strategy and together they manage to encourage the priest up to Ward 17 and from there to the operating theatre.Luke’s unusual tactics win him brownie points on the ward and, boosted by his success, he invites Steph out to dinner. She accepts, herself on something of a high after recent academic success. But their date is doomed to failure because Steph still is not sure about her separation from Ben and also she is about to make a major professional mistake.
Tony Hurst, the ward clerk, is struggling to keep his head above water while he deals with equipment breakdowns and a busy schedule. Steph inadvertently leaves an exposed needle at the nurses’ station whilst she is responding to an emergency, and Tony suffers a needlestick injury.
It is the beginning of a turn for the worse for everybody. The needle in question has been used on another difficult patient—a young woman, Simone, who is apparently suffering from kidney stones. It turns out she is just scamming Mitch in order to get free pethidine shots and she is actually a recidivist junkie.
Steph goes out on her date with Luke, encouraged by him to try to cheer up. The date turns out badly. Steph would be even more miserable if she knew that Ben has heard about the date. Steph, unbeknownst to Ben, has realised, via the date, that her affection for him is far from dead. She tries to approach him and, without telling her that he knows about her seeing Luke, he rejects her in no uncertain terms. The only person who seems to be getting any good news on this particular day is Von, who finally learns that her illness is not, as she suspected, cancer but lupus. Her euphoria is a source of concern for Mitch, who would like her to take things a whole lot more seriously.
With: Jake Blundell as Tony Hurst, Marjorie Child as Betty Ridgeway, Pippa Grandison as Simone Carlisle, John McTernan as Rev Geoff Cavendish, Farren Visocchi as Waiter
Just Like A Woman

August 17, 1999

Connor is stunned to find Alana, a female patient , is a pre-operative transgender. His resolve to cope is shattered when he subsequently learns that she used to be his football coach, and a mentor after Connor’s father died. Repulsed and betrayed, Connor wants nothing more to do with Alana. Nor can he understand how Alana’s son tom, also an old friend, can be so accepting of the situation. Alana is diagnosed with breast cancer as a result of the hormone therapy she is on. She refuses to have a mastectomy and will not stop taking the hormones, as it would mean returning to the body she felt trapped in all her life. Connor confronts her for being a coward. Surely any life is better than none at all? Tom helps Connor appreciate the significance and bravery of Alana’s transformation. Her distress over the injustice of her fate and insistence that she is still the person Connor admired, finally makes him accept not only the choice Alana has made, but Alana as a woman.
While Steph worries about her husband, Ben enjoys the freedom of being a separated man by flirting with a woman he is called to attend. However, innocent banter suddenly becomes serious when the woman offers her his phone number and then a lift home. Ben succumbs, ending up in bed, only to regret it.
Von refuses to heed Mitch’s constant nagging that she must adjust her lifestyle to accommodate her lupus. Her day is not made any easier by Colin, a flamboyant chef who refuses to change his long hours, copious drinking and rich diet despite his diagnosis as a diabetic. Von is finally forced to read the riot act tohim and can no longer ignore the relevance of the lecture to herself. Mitch drives the point home. If Von does not look after herself, she won’t be able to hold down her job—and her work is the only thing Von has in her life. She goes home to begin educating herself about coping with lupus.
Terri learns Mitch is seeing a female employee at All Saints. She becomes totally preoccupied with finding out the woman’s identity, finally discovering it is Juliette, a physiotherapist. Mitch’s refusal to divulge anything only frustrates her further. Not only is she cool towards Juliette, she is also snappy with her staff. Terri can’t believe she has become the victim of the green-eyed monster and resolves to pull herself together, offering Mitch her genuine blessings for his future with Juliette.

Episode 072
August 31, 1999
Luke falls into the trap of joining in laughter at Steph’s expense over the incident (in the previous episode) where she was responsible for a patient losing confidence in a doctor. This week, however, it is Luke’s turn. Olivia, a large diabetic woman, has a reaction to antibiotics and can’t breathe. Luke mucks up his attempt to intubate her. Swelling around her throat forces him to do a tracheostomy. After he cuts her neck open, he cannot find the windpipe in all the blood and gore. Stan Ridgeway, who is on the ward looking for Steph’s incident report, come to Luke’s rescue and the patient is saved. But Luke is completely humiliated.
Connor reckons Jared should stop sitting at home pining for Samantha and get out more. To this end, he hassles Jared into going to the gym with him. Jared is driving them both to the gym when he knocks over Roger, a very fit guy who trains for triathlons. Roger, who is a very full-on personality, leaps up and says he is fine. Jared wants the guy to have a check-up but Roger says he does not have time and cycles off. Jared sees Roger again at the gym and is amazed by his fanatical approach to training. At the gym, Jared also meets Mel, an attractive instructor. As Jared leaves for work he finds Roger collapsed on the side of the road. Jared calls the ambulance. At the hospital it takes a while for Mitch to diagnose Roger, who is going into body meltdown (rhabdomyolysis). Roger admits to Mitch he has used training as a way to avoid confronting his feelings about a broken relationship. This admission and a subsequent conversation with Mitch propels Jared back to the gym to ask Mel out on a date.
Connor is delighted to find Cougars star Darren Rigg admitted to Ward 17 and under his care. Darren is a fervent and very public anti-drugs campaigner. He is faced with the treatment decision of whether or not to use a steroid medication to make the football injury heal faster. If he does not take the steroids, he will not heal in time to take the field for the Grand Final. But, if he does take them, he feels it could compromise his anti-drugs position. Darren’s fiancee is none other than Simone Carlisle. She is a drug addict who has managed to clean herself up but has hepatitis C. She agrees to allow Mitch to perform a liver biopsy but does not want to tell Darren about her hep C or her past. Simone’s presence in the hospital is the talk of the ward, particularly as she may have inadvertently passed the hep C on to Tony via his needlestick injury.
Terri is forced to come to work out of uniform because both her uniforms were stolen from the clothesline, along with some of her underwear. The main suspect is Neil Phillips.
Ben and Steph’s romance heats up, with Ben sending flowers to the ward and Steph slipping a note under a windscreen wiper on the ambulance. The flowers are a source of confusion to Terri, who thinks they are from Luke as a means of apologising to Steph.
With: Jake Blundell as Tony Hurst, Betty Bobbit as Olivia MacReadie, Grant Bowler as Darren Rigg, Pippa Grandison as Simone Carlisle, Peter Lamb as Neil Phillips, Morgan O’Neil as Roger Fleming
Memories by Moonlight

Episode 073
September 07, 1999

Working a night shift, Von nurses Lillian Gehler, who has been in a car accident with her husband. Lillian is told her husband is in the Intensive Care Unit but she continues to ask why he does not come to visit. At first Von believes the woman’s disorientation and anxiety are the result of the anaesthetic but she soon realises Lillian has no short-term memory. Von and Luke learn the memory loss is a pre-existing condition and was caused by herpes simplex encephalitis, and Lillian’s husband was her primary carer. Von manages to calm her patient’s anxiety. When she learns that Lillian’s husband has died, Von has to break the sad news and share the woman’s grief. Then, unable to remember even her own grief, the patient calls for Von again and asks when her husband will be coming to visit.
Ben and Bron attend a party where a young girl has collapsed after taking a cocktail of drugs and alcohol. Her student ID card identifies her as Zoe Dell. When Ben and Bron try to get her to hospital, they are confronted by a gang of drunken youths. They call for police back-up. The girl’s condition worsens and they have to treat her while under siege. Steph believes the girl has been admitted with false ID and she clashes again with Dr. Preece, refusing to treat ’Zoe’ as prescribed. Steph discovers the girl is really Julie Bentham and she is allergic to penicillin. If she is given the antibiotic she could die. Julie’s life is saved twice in one night.
Terri’s mother, Eileen, asks her for help when her husband (Terri’s father), Ryan, bashes her. Eileen refuses to go to hospital and Terri asks Mitch to come to her flat to treat her. Mitch discovers Terri has never talked to her mother about the domestic violence. He urges her to persuade Eileen to leave Ryan. Terri tries, but all the years of pretence make it impossible for mother and daughter to be honest with each other. Terri thinks she can try again in the morning but when she gets up she finds that Eileen has gone home to Ryan.
Connor is rushed off his feet when one of his patients reacts badly to a new sedative and starts to sleepwalk. Connor chases him around the hospital all night and falls foul of the night Assistant Director of Nursing Brenda Blair.

True Love And The Blues

Episode 074
September 14, 1999
Ben and Bron arrive at a shooting to find the victim is a Family Court judge, well known for his strong views on family values. Fearing whoever shot the judge will return to finish the job off, police arrange for him to be under strict police guard as he is taken off to All Saints. The police presence on the ward puts extra pressure on the nursing staff; it is not only the hassle of showing ID every time they enter the judge’s room but the feeling that every person who walks on to the ward could be the one who shot him. The judge’s son waits dutifully for him to return from theatre. On first impressions they appear to have a strong relationship. It is not long, however, before the cracks start to show. As police begin to suspect the culprit may be a lot closer to home than first thought, Nicholas reveals to Terri it was he who shot his father—having caught him in the arms of a woman other than his mother. Bearing the weight of his confession, Terri attempts to resolve the family dilemma. She finds herself entangled in a situation which, emotionally, resembles her own family. Her sympathy with the boy’s feelings, if not actions, bring to the surface desires Terri had kept hidden in the deep cavities of her mind since childhood.
Luke and Bron spend their last morning together before Luke heads off to a so-called medical conference in Alaska. Bron, who thinks it is unfair doctors get to have all the fun, would do anything to join him. Out on the road with Ben, it is all Bron talks about. After transporting the judge to hospital, the pair is off to a backyard accident at a suburban house. Having injured herself while committing a mischievous act, 10-year-old Tess has hidden from her mother and is refusing to come out from under the house. Ben decides that, since Bron is the smaller of them, she should go under the house to drag the kid out. Bron does so and in the process receives a nasty cut (and, unbeknownst to her, a bite from a funnel web spider). When she returns to All Saints Bron goes for the regulation tetanus shot. Soon after she begins to feel woozy. Thinking it is her weak attempt at getting sick leave so she can go overseas with Luke, Ben teases her. It is not until she collapses that Ben starts to take her seriously. With Ben’s help, Mitch diagnoses her condition. It is a tense wait as the anti-venom kicks in and Bron begins to recover. Seeing the girl they love so vulnerable makes both Luke and Connor realise how important she is to them. It is Connor who finds himself on the backburner, again, when Luke tells Bron he loves her.
Everyone is a little surprised when Simone Carlisle is admitted to hospital with a threatened miscarriage, not least of all Tony. Any ill feelings he has towards her are pushed aside, however, when he learns she has lost the baby. Simone’s fiance, Darren, is keen to try for another child straightaway. Mitch warns Simone against this, advising that the management of her hepatitis C must take priority over becoming pregnant. Mitch says Darren needs to be aware of her condition, especially if he is to be her life partner, but Simone is afraid of revealing her past to Darren, and risking losing the man she loves. With Mitch’s support, she tells Darren about her hepatitis C status, and her history of IV drug abuse. Her worst fears are realised when Darren walks out. It is Tony who helps Simone find the strength to face life alone.
Von covers for Jared, who is suffering the effects of a strenuous gym routine.

Knowing Me, Knowing You

Episode 075
September 21, 1999
Terri is taking personal time and Steph is looking forward to running the ward for the morning. Although she and Ben are still living separately, she is enjoying the romance of courtship all over again. The day is looking good but there are speedbumps on the highway to happiness, and her nose is soon out of joint when she finds Terri has made time to organise the ward before returning to her flat to wait for the plumber.
Denise Baumann is being treated for a broken shoulder, the result of a fall. She is in her 50s and her husband, Errol, is in his 70s. The situation becomes more serious when Mitch realises there is more to Denise’s condition than broken bones. He diagnoses dementia. Steph, deeply sympathetic asks Errol if here is anyone she can call. Errol admits they have a daughter, but have not seen her some time, and Steph deduces there has been a rift in the family.
When Rachel, a successful business executive arrives, her antagonism towards her father only strengthens Steph’s sympathy for the parents. But is dangerous to jump to conclusions. Steph discovers Errol did know of his wife’s condition but kept it a secret. Rachel accuses her father of selfishness. Errol admits he deliberately hid the truth from his daughter but only because he feared she would put Denise in a home. And he is right. Now that she is aware of the circumstances it is the only option that seems to make sense to Rachel. Her father is too old and she is too busy to provide appropriate home care. Is this selfishness or common sense?
The tragedy of Denise’s condition is that while she is aware she has a husband and daughter, she no longer recognises them. Errol is a stranger to her and she mistakes Steph for Rachel.
Steph realises assigning good guy/bad guy labels to this situation is meaningless. The most important thing is to reconcile father and daughter so they can both be there for the mother. She almost manages, but Rachel is cheated of a reconciliation when Errol quietly passes away from heart failure while sitting by his wife’s bedside.
Now Rachel goes to pieces. She has lost her father and she will always be a stranger to her mother. Steph counsels her against throwing her life away out of guilt. It is too easy for the carer to become a victim too. Rachel decides on a compromise—she will put her career on hold to care for her mother. The time will come when only the right nursing home can provide that care but, for now, Rachel intends to love and care for her mother while there is till time left.
Steph takes this to heart. How much time does anyone have left? The one you love could be taken away from you tomorrow. She takes the plunge and commits herself to Ben, reaffirming her love for him.
Ben and Bron attend an MVA. The victim, a pedestrian, is Mehmet, a Turkish man with little English. He is disoriented, and confused, and seems to have an obsession with his parked car, a nondescript four-wheel drive vehicle. Ben is put off by the man’s vomiting and (apparently) violent attitude. He tosses the man’s keys to a bystander, who locks the car without checking the interior.
Mehmet is transferred to the hospital and is moved to Ward 17 prior to surgery. But he can’t be operated on until he understands what is happening and can give permission. A translator is hard to find. Connor finds himself stuck with a difficult patient, displaying the same kind of agitation and violence which put Ben off. Like Ben, Connor finds the man’s inability to communicate an alienating factor. When pethidine is prescribed for the pain the doctor is too lazy to include the anti-nausea medication. Mehmet is throwing up all over the place. Relations between Mehmet and Connor are at rock bottom.
Connor is able to put his antipathy aside and makes a genuine effort to understand what Mehmet has been trying to tell them. He realises there may be a diabetic child still inside Mehmet’s car. Connor puts Ben and Bron on the case. It is a race against time, since the car has by now been towed away.
The car is located and the child rescued. Meanwhile, although it is not accepted procedure, Connor enlists the help of a Turkish patient to interpret, and meaningful communication between nurse and patient is restored. Connor bonds with Mehmet and restores his son to him.
Another domestic first for Terri, as she prepares to deal with her first tradesman. A card under the door, presumably from the estate agent, has informed her there is a plumbing problem. But when the plumber arrives it proves to be Neil Phillips. Neil, a former patient of Ward 17, suffers from Munchausen’s syndrome. He and Terri did not part on the best terms, and Terri has no idea what his medical condition is now. Terri feels extremely uncomfortable in having to deal with him… but her sense of fair play won’t let her express this, After all, he seems to be a bona fide plumber. Neil’s presence is ambiguous. No proof that he has sinister intentions—but later, while working, he hurts his hand badly. As Terri dresses it, he voices what she is wondering… did he hurt himself deliberately? When he leaves, there is no doubt he will be seeing Terri again. Later Terri checks up on him. When she discovers that (a) he is a qualified plumber and (b) he was sent by the estate agent, common sense tells her to stop being paranoid. Despite this, she is still worried.
Mitch is monitoring Von’s SLE (Lupus) condition, and advising her on the lifestyle changes she must make in order to manage it. Von, fearing public ridicule, resists the advice to take exercise. But she agrees to power-walk at lunchtime if Mitch will do it too. Mitch reluctantly agrees.
Because Von’s condition is confidential and Mitch is treating her discreetly, Connor is intrigued by what he perceives to be an inexplicably close personal relationship between her and Mitch. Inevitably, Connor jumps to the wrong conclusion.
With: Jake Blundell as Tony Hurst, Simon Elrahi as Mehmet Shammiraz, Michelle Fawdon as Denise Baumann, Tony Helou as Mr. Saad, Rebecca Hobbs as Rachel Baumann, Peter Knowles as Dr. Daley, Peter Lamb as Neil Phillips, Peter Sumner as Errol Baumann
When Duty Calls

Episode 076
September 28, 1999
Bron is thrilled to hear her new partner is none other than Peter Maroney. Pete has a reputation as a hero in his country hometown for his rescue of two children from a collapsing and burning building. Bron is even more thrilled to learn that, unlike Ben, he does not hold much stock in rules and regulations and allows her to perform procedures Ben would never allow. But her pleasure is short-lived when it becomes obvious something is very wrong with Pete. He is not allowing her to undertake procedures because he thinks she is capable but, rather, because he knows he is incapable of performing them himself. When the situation is finally revealed to her, Bron finds herself being held captive by a man who can see his whole career going down the drain.
Judith, a new mother, is admitted suffering flu-like symptoms. Her 12-week-old baby rooms with her, causing a bit of clucky behaviour from the staff. But when Judith collapses, putting both herself and her child at risk, Mitch starts to suspect they are dealing with something far more sinister than the flu. It turns out Judith is suffering from polio, contracted from her daughter, who has recently been immunised against the disease. Von is forced to admit to Terri her SLE (lupus) status so as to be taken off the case. It falls to Jared to se the woman through the frightening and painful disease.
Ward 17 is pleased to see Brian again after so long, but not so pleased to hear his wife Marjorie has died and he has seemingly lost his will to live. Obviously neglecting his health and welfare, Brian is finally forced to admit he is not harbouring a death wish at all but, rather, feels tremendous guilt over the fact he wants to live despite having lost the love of his life.
The Cougars have finally taken out a Grand Final and Connor’s celebrations have lasted a few days, during which both he and Tony have been missing in action. Connor can’t remember most of what went on over those days. So when a local newspaper carries a front page spread on the post-match celebrations, featuring Connor and Tony in a warm embrace, Connor starts to wonder just what he got up to. Tony strings him along, having fun at Connor’s expense. The fun stops when Mitch tells Tony his test results are back.
With: Michael Angus as John Aherne, Jake Blundell as Tony Hurst, Simon Chilvers as Brian Toomey, Annie Davis-McCubbin as Judith Dawson, Andrew Hunter as Construction Foreman, Silvio Ofria as Roscoe, Joy Smithers as Rose Carelton
The Ties That Bind

Episode 077
October 05, 1999
Connor enters the ward to confront a tense exchange between a mild-mannered young man, Scott, and a middle-aged woman, Margaret, demanding to be allowed to see her dying son—alone.
Connor’s sympathy for Margaret is secured when he witnesses a tearful bedside reunion with her emaciated son. But there is more to this than meets the eye: Scott is the dying man’s lover of 10 years, during which time Margaret has utterly rejected her son. She would not even know Mike was dying if Scott had not phoned her.
The scales fall from Connor’s eyes once Margaret reveals her true colours—she is a bitter woman desperate to regain some control over her son’s life, even if that means hijacking his final hours. Connor does what he can to help Scott spend time with Mike, which only serves to enrage Margaret further. When Scott magnanimously invites her back into the room for Mike’s dying moments, she rewards the gesture with the crushing announcement that she—as Mike’s mother and next of kin—is claiming her right to dispose of her son’s body and possessions, denying Scott any participation in the funeral arrangements. Helpless in the face of the law, all that Connor can do is invite Scott to help lay out his dead boyfriend’s body.
Steph is nursing a teenage girl suffering from cystic fibrosis. Deb has recently been removed from the lung transplant list for non-compliance with the strict medical regime required. This non-compliance has also led to the staphylococcus infection for which, in part, Deb has been hospitalised. The misery of this, combined with the news that a close friend has just died from the disease, initiates a dark spiral of depression from which not even Deb’s devoted boyfriend Tim can lift her. When Steph finds the two entwined asleep on Deb’s bed she does not at first suspect the awful truth: that they have entered a suicide pact and injected themselves with insulin. Once the pact has been discovered, only a cool, efficient response from our team ensures that the two silly kids survive. It’s then compassionate counselling from Terri and intervention from Mitch that secures Deb’s place back on the transplant list and gives her renewed hope for the future.
A lively 60-year-old jazz drummer succumbs to heart block as she tangos around the ward with the young man everyone has assumed to be her grandson. There is universal surprise and a small measure of comic revulsion at the revelation the young man is, in fact, her husband.
Bron plans a lavish homecoming for Luke, meeting him off his plane from Alaska with a limo and champagne. The sexual heat generated transfers to their afternoon shift—backfiring badly when, finding nowhere to satisfy their ardour they take refuge in Terri’s office and Von walks in on them.
With: Aaron Blabey as Scott, Jake Blundell as Tony Hurst, Tina Bursill as Margaret Evans, Ritchie Gudgeon as Tim, Jill McKay as Kitty Conway, Emily Perry as Deb Taylor
Lost and Found

Episode 078
October 12, 1999
Gabrielle Flanagan is admitted onto Ward 17 to donate bone marrow for a 16-year-old girl with leukaemia. On hearing her name, Von and Steph both wonder if it is ’the Gabrielle Flanagan’—a woman whose baby daughter was stolen from her 14 years ago. Connor’s curiosity is aroused. He is dying to ask Gabrielle—who is his patient—if she’s the one. He does not have to wonder for long as Gabrielle, being highly strung and paranoid after so much time in the media spotlight, informs him that it is indeed her. Although they have got off to a bad start, Connor’s sympathy grows as Gabrielle tells him about the never-ending quest to find her daughter, whom she believes may still be alive. Gabrielle shows Connor an image projection of what her daughter would look like now at age 16. Connor thinks it is uncanny that the picture looks very similar to the 16-year-old patient Alex, who is also in the Ward, to receive Gabrielle’s bone marrow. Jared tells Connor that Alex is adopted and they start to wonder if she could be Gabrielle’s daughter—right age, exact bone marrow match, the likeness in the image projection picture. Gabrielle encounters Alex in the hospital grounds and is amazed at the resemblance to what her daughter should look like. She pesters Connor for details and when he can’t tell her anything she manages to sneak a look at Alex’s file. When she learns it is Alex who will be receiving her bone marrow she is convinced she is about to be reunited with her long lost baby girl.
Meanwhile, Alex Richards is devastated to learn from her parents she is adopted. She cannot understand why her parents kept it a secret from her—obviously they must be ashamed of her. Terri manages to convince the girl to listen to her parents’ explanation of why they chose to lie to her.
Kevin Simms is admitted to the Ward suffering advanced emphysema. He is in a bad way and Mitch has to tell him he only has a short while to live. But Kevin is desperate to make it one extra week. He has put in for a marriage certificate so he can marry Liz, the woman he loves. Making her his wife is the only thing that will allow Kev to rest in peace—he wants to will his house to her but he is sure that his nasty sister is going to contest it. However, if Liz is his wife, his sister Maisie won’t have a leg to stand on. Prejudices come to the fore when the staff of Ward 17 discover they will be looking after a smuggler who is to be admitted with a bellyful of cocaine-filled condoms. The ’bloke’ turns out to be a slip of a girl, who was once a junkie. The tragedy of her tale unfolds as she is monitored and guarded; she is desperately in love with her new husband, who is the only good thing to ever happen to her, and she wanted to help him realise his dream of a place in the country by smuggling coke—just this once. Her husband, Paul, has no intention of letting his wife go to jail, and puts a gun to Steph’s head, he’s getting his wife out of here! But Lisa needs surgery urgently. Paul will not let his wife out of his sight and when Luke points out that is not possible, Paul, at gunpoint, insists it is and that Luke must perform the surgery. Steph is roped in, and, Mitch volunteers himself as anaesthetist, rather then putting some other sucker at risk. The team heads off to surgery leaving Terri almost paralysed with fear. The last time there was a gun on the ward, two people died, and she eventually lost a man she cared deeply about. Von is the only one who realises what she is going through, and helps Terri cope as the ward is besieged with patients from the wing the theatre is in, evacuations have been necessary in case the gun goes off, exploding oxygen tanks.
In theatre, surgery goes ahead at gunpoint; Luke and Steph working on the patient as Mitch works hard to win Paul’s trust and hopefully to get him to put away the gun. Just as it looks as if he has made a breakthrough, Luke nicks one of the condoms causing the cocaine to leak out and arrests lisa. The teams work to avert the crisis and once it seems clear Lisa will be all right, Paul insists they hand over the cocaine. There is shock for a moment as Mitch, Steph and Luke think this ’act of love’ has in fact been about retrieving the drugs; but Paul slashes the condoms, tipping out the poison that has ruined his and Lisa’s lives. He says a tearful goodbye to Lisa, hands Mitch the gun and walks out to face his fate. Leaving the surgical team to finish with Lisa and return to the arms of their waiting partners. As Steph and Ben embrace and Luke and Bron do likewise, Terri gives Mitch a stern lecture about the stupidity of putting his life at risk. Then Rose arrives and whisks Mitch away, leaving Terri alone.

Charlie and her trainer Jimmy are itching to get out of All Saints and back in the ring—she is not too keen on hanging around for a CT scan—even though Luke fears she may have a cerebral bleed. But Steph suspects there may be other factors behind Charlie’s symptoms, and a urine test confirms she is pregnant. Terrified a pregnancy will mean the end of her boxing career, Charlie demands an abortion. There’s only one hitch, Luke refuses to write a referral, claiming there is no medical reason for a termination.
While nursing Charlie, Steph realises the young boxers’s views on pregnancy are not as clear cut as she initially made out—especially when Steph points out motherhood need not mean the end of her promising career. But even if Charlie is cleared of brain injuries, she still faces a terrible decision: abort the pregnancy or lose her big chance to crack the US professional circuit.

When his condition worsens and Mitch eventually diagnoses advanced cancer, Regina decides it is time to bring some happiness into the unlucky man’s life.
Ben faces a reunion of a different sort when his ambulance is hijacked by Jason Richards—a mixed up young man whose obsession with becoming an ambulance officer has developed into full-blown psychosis. Episode 082
November 09, 1999
It’s Sunday on the ward. The atmosphere is more relaxed than it is on a weekday—less staff, fewer interruptions, radios are playing, no one is in a hurry to do anything. Steph is running the ward, glad of the opportunity to be in charge without Terri looking over her shoulder. There is an air of everyone pitching in, covering for each other as there are no administrative minders; nurses do their own housekeeping, take phone calls, write bed tags and collect x-rays.
Eddie Furlong is brought in suffering from hypothermia, having been fished out of the river following a late night boating accident. Eddie obsessed by the whereabouts of his two crewmates, especially his young brother Marty, whom he learns has been declared brain dead following a serious head injury. Seemingly depressed by his brother’s death, Eddie attempts suicide via a paracetamol overdose. But the true reasons behind his suicide attempt—guilt and remorse—are revealed when the other member of the party, Rob, who has just been discharged from St Angela’s arrives on the ward to accuse Eddie of cowardice and murder. He claims Eddie was so obsessed with saving his own skin, he left his companions for dead. Despite prompt action from the Ward 17 staff, Eddie’s overdose looks set to cause major liver damage and probably death. His only chance of leading a healthy life, or indeed surviving the overdose, is to have a liver transplant. And his brother’s liver is the obvious candidate. But Eddie has misgivings about accepting an organ from the brother he neglected to save.
Ben and Mick’s day begins innocuously when they revive a wealthy yuppie who has taken a narcotics overdose. The ungrateful patient gives a false name and refuses to accompany them to hospital, leaving a bad taste in Ben and Mick’s mouths. Later, Ben and Mick spot the man’s sports car in the doctors’ car park at All Saints. Ben and Steph are certain the person who has OD’d is in fact Tom Snowdon—an up and coming anaesthetics registrar and mate of Luke’s. Luke initially dismisses the allegations against his colleague, but a mixture of self-interest and ethics finally force him to confront Tom about the overdose. In doing so, Luke realises there is more to being a successful doctor than having a huge trust account and a privileged background—Tom’s background.
Terri is excited to be hosting brunch for her parents’ 35th wedding anniversary. But things quickly sour when Ryan slaps Eileen for some alleged past indiscretion. When Ryan attempts to do so again, Terri steps in to save her mother and causes her father to fall and break his hip. Caught between feelings of guilt over her actions and disgust over her father’s, Terri arranges for her father to be admitted to Ward 17. Luke advises he will need a pin and plate inserted in his femur. Meanwhile, acting on a hunch, Mitch has secretively arranged a CT scan which reveals Ryan has life threatening cancer. Terri’s abused mother rushes immediately to her husband’s side, and Terri realises there is now no chance of her mother freeing herself from Ryan’s controlling influence.
Meanwhile, Jared has a challenging day dealing with an erratic drunk suffering from Korsakoff’s syndrome. And Mitch psyches up for his big dinner date with Rose’s parents.

This woman, Belinda is Steph's patient and Steph finds herself siding with her patient when Belinda decides to lay a formal complaint against Luke. Mitch reassures Luke the incident was unfortunate but understandable, and that CEO Stan Ridgeway will be most sympathetic. However, Luke is unprepared for Tom's vindictive ambush.
Even Bron is finding Luke's paranoia wearisome, but if she thought Ben would lend her a sympathetic ear she is about to be proven wrong. The friction between the two ambos soon takes a back seat to a full-scale emergency. A "client" assaults Ben and leaves him floating face down in a deserted river. Bron risks her own safety to rescue Ben and perform lifesaving resuscitation, which, essential though it may have been at the time, does not exactly make Ben's day. Later Bron receives word she is being slated for a bravery commendation, which just about sends her over the moon. It is only when she tries to convey the good news to a self-absorbed Luke that she is brought back to earth with thud.
Kylie and Jared find their work cut out for them trying to prepare a retired pensioner, Clive Murray, for some routine heart studies. The patient appears to have a never-ending stream of female family visitors which makes doing check ups increasingly difficult. In a last-ditch attempt to complete their preparation duties they catch him in the act of having --- with one of the so-called daughters. Not only do they solve the riddle of the constant stream of visitors, they learn Clive's heart problems have been exacerbated by his passionate commitment to prostitutes and Viagra.

Episode 097
Tuesday, April 25, 2000
Terri is facing two crises on different fronts. She has been charged with the murder of Neil Phillips and is presently out on bail, continuing to work at All Saints. The police are challenging her claim that when she stabbed Neil she was defending herself against indecent assault and intended rape. To make matters even worse, her colleagues at the hospital, including most of those in Ward 17 will either be witnesses for the defence or are listed to give evidence for the prosecution. The practical situation is pressure enough. But Terri, being who she is, is haunted and appalled she caused the death of another human being, whatever the circumstances.
Terri's identity has been suppressed in media reports of the incident. So, her parents are ignorant of her involvement. Terri has told them nothing. Her reasoning is she is keeping this from them in deference to what they are already going through with Ryan's (her father) cancer. The real reason is the sub-level of shame and her unwillingness to face them with it.
But now Ryan is admitted to Ward 17. Dehydrated from his chemotherapy and radiation treatment, he has also been diagnosed as having suffered a "silent" heart attack. On the surface, and Eileen would say this, Ryan's illness has brought the couple back together again. It is not true. Ryan feels betrayed and resentful his "power" has been stripped from him. Eileen, who now has the power, could be forgiven for thinking what goes around, comes around, and that Ryan has earned his suffering, even if it is God's will. Eileen would never admit this, not even to herself. But the subtext of resentment between husband and wife is always there.
Which is one of the reasons that, once he is in hospital, Ryan excludes Eileen and turns to Terri. But it is not the main reason. Ryan can't handle the pain generated by his cancer. He thinks God has double-crossed him. He has had enough and he wants Terri to help him die. With the issue of euthanasia thrust on her by her own father, Terri is close to cracking. It takes Mitch's help and empathy to offer Ryan another option, that of pain management.
The police, in the shape of Detective Debbie Bloom, are interviewing hospital staff including Terri's Ward 17 colleagues. It turns out Jared knew Debbie at school—she was the older sister of a friend—and had a huge crush on her. It also seems Debbie thinks Terri is guilty and will use any methods to get the information needed to convict Terri. When Debbie learns Terri's parents are at the hospital, Terri has no choice, she tells her mother about Neil Phillips and the police investigation, but (as she secretly feared) instead of comfort and sympathy, she gets criticism and implied condemnation.
Ben and Steph are having a wonderful time trying to fall pregnant, and Rose and Mitch are having a wonderful time playing house. But things go wrong when Rose loses her precious engagement ring, She is scared of Mitch's reaction—will he be angry with her? He is not. In fact, he has found the ring, and lovingly slips it back on her finger.
Ben and Bron attend a call, which seems at first to be merely an act of spite by a wife against Doug, her husband, who is drunk and passed out. But then Ben and Bron spot the tyre mark across the man's shirt. He has been run over and for all they know, the wife Evie did it. But when Doug is in Steph's care in Ward 17 a different story emerges. Doug has not been able to handle the death of his mother. Husband and wife have been unable to communicate, and their marriage is at risk. Steph helps them repair the damage.
Von covers up for a tardy security guard, a long-term member of staff, when she discovers he has health problems, which must be dealt with immediately. The guard is pathetically grateful they have saved his job; he is hanging out for an offer of a redundancy package. Von has been given an uncomfortable preview of how health can produce a use-by date.
With: Joy Smithers as Rose Carlton, Celia Ireland as Regina Butcher, Martin Vaughan as Ryan Sullivan, Melissa Jaffer as Eileen Sullivan, Marta Dusseldorp as Debbie Bloom, Gael Ballantyne as Evie Mollock, Chris Burke as Doug Mollock, Rob Baxter as Rod "Rocket" Sturgess.
Rush To Judgement

Episode 098
Tuesday, May 02, 2000
Nursing Unit Manager Cynthia Murdoch has devoted the past 25 years of her life to the Sacred Heart Rehabilitation Unit attached to All Saints. But, despite her superhuman efforts, the place is rundown, understaffed, last on the queue for funds and generally under continual pressure from the administration. Rose is not enjoying her brief work rotation there. When Mitch drops her off to work, he runs into his former patient Ruby Nolan. Ruby begs him to please get her out of the Unit: she does not want to die "like all the others". Mitch puts her paranoia down to dementia; he is sure she is being well looked after.
Meanwhile, Kylie pages him urgently to examine Dave Harris, a brain-damaged Rehab Unit patient who was admitted with a mild chest infection, but whose condition has suddenly deteriorated sharply. Mitch cannot identify what is causing the infection and Dave is not responding to treatment. Despite everyone's best efforts, he dies. Frustrated by his inability to uncover Dave's cause of death, Mitch starts examining patient records from the Rehab Unit. A pattern of chest infections is emerging and Mitch decides Ruby might be dying after all. In spite of Cynthia's protests, Mitch brings Ruby up to Ward 17, where the final piece of the puzzle falls into place. There is a lethal fungus lurking somewhere in the Rehab Unit and it is up to Mitch to locate it.
Bron and Ben treat a delusional young woman dancing half-naked in a park. Bianca also has a potentially serious heart condition, as well as her paranoia and disorientation. Getting ready to bring her in, Ben discovers her young baby, Jack. Bron tries to feed him some chocolate cookies from Bianca's picnic spread and when he is not interested she samples them herself.
Bianca is admitted to Ward 17, where Steph is more than happy to look after the baby. But her opinion of Bianca changes radically when it is revealed she has overdosed on hash cookies. The prospect of an overnight stay in hospital means Steph must find accommodation for baby Jack. But that is more complicated than at first glance.
Bron, who is now stoned from the hash cookies, gatecrashes Luke's important work lunch with Mr Madsen. Her stoned behaviour infuriates Luke who assumes Madsen will judge him harshly for his girlfriend's behaviour. However, Luke soon finds out his mentor is more worldly-wise than he gave him credit for.
Wayne Calder can't help picking the surgical wound from a knee reconstruction he had last month. As a result, he has developed a severe case of cellulitis and risks serious complications. All of Jared and Kylie's warnings fall on deaf ears, until Kylie realises she needs to customise her warning message. The threat of amputation finally forces Wayne to take notice.
With: John Batchelor as Wayne Calder, Connie Hobbs as Ruby Nolan, John Noble as Dr. John Madsen, Joy Smithers as Rose Carlton, Ling Hsueh Tang as Dr. Kylie Preece
Judge Not…

Episode 099
Tuesday, May 09, 2000
Terri's trial begins. Prosecution barrister Marion Lord tells the Jury Terri murdered Neil Phillips to keep their love affair secret. Terri is horrified Lord should believe she is a cold-blooded killer. Her barrister Steve Coulter assures her all that matters is what the Jury believe at the end of the trial.
Jared is in court to support Terri and watches as Debbie Bloom presents the police evidence against her. Debbie presents items of Terri's clothing found in Neil's flat and a diary containing intimate details of their affair. Coulter cross-examines Debbie establishing the clothing may have been stolen; there is no other physical evidence to prove Terri ever visited Neil Phillips and he may have made up the diary.
Under oath, Luke is forced to say; as Neil was dying he accused Terri of stabbing him. Terri has said she stabbed Neil once in self-defence but the Prosecution force Luke to confirm he saw two stab wounds. In cross-examination, Coulter gets Luke to establish only one of the stab wounds was fatal and there is nothing to prove Terri caused this fatal wound.
Under pressure in the witness box, Von has to admit Terri did not mention the stabbing until police were present. While she ridicules the idea Terri had an affair with Neil, saying Terri's religious vows are the centre of her life, she is pressured into admitting Terri never told her of her fears she was being stalked and she left her community house after she met Neil.
Meanwhile, Mitch, desperately worried about Terri and unable to help her, takes his frustration out on Kylie and other members of the staff

…Lest Ye Be Judged

Episode 100
Tuesday, May 16, 2000
The final day of Terri's trial begins. She is horrified as Prosecution barrister Marion Lord continues to paint her as some fallen woman. The nosy neighbour Gilda gives the Jury the impression Terri was not only having an affair with Neil Phillips but also had another lover, namely Mitch.
Von tries to calm a nervous Mitch, who believes his testimony could make all the difference to the trial. When called to the witness box, Mitch performs admirably under the guidance of Terri's barrister but when it comes to the enemy…
Under cross-examination, Mitch's confidence is rocked when the Crown starts to focus on his past relationship with Terri and he is completely thrown by the question of whether or not he is still in love with her. Under oath Mitch has no choice but to say he is! The Crown uses this to put the idea into the Jury members' heads that Mitch might be prepared to lie to protect Terri.
Terri' s nerves almost get the better of her but Coulter talks her into testifying. Leading her gently through the horror of the attack, Terri almost believes she can get through this. But an emotionally exhausted Terri, under cross-examination starts to falter, finally cracking under the pressure and admitting she was angry, not scared when she stabbed Neil Phillips.
Meanwhile, Val Hale is admitted to Ward 17, having suffered an asthma attack. There seems to be nothing Kylie can do to help her but Jared suspects there is something the woman is not telling them. Kylie finally gains Val's confidence and learns that in addition to the asthma, Val is suffering from severe vaginal discomfort, which manifests every time she has unprotected --- with her husband. Jared jokingly suggests she might be allergic to him and is horrified to learn he is right. Between them, Kylie and Jared counsel Val about treatment, persuading her to have hope for the future, and manage in the process to fuel Bron's suspicions about their feelings towards each other.

It is the patient herself who finally encourages him to join his peers in the industrial action… it is the right thing to do and patients such as Judith will ultimately benefit from the work the nurses put in now.
Terri, still stinging from her court case, is horrified to learn woman whose daughter was murdered regards her as a hero. The woman's congratulations on the action she took against Neil Phillips cements for Terri her feelings that what she did was wrong. Out Of Nowhere

Episode 103
Tuesday, June 06, 2000
Linda Davies, ex-Ward 12 and now agency nurse arrives to help out on Ward 17. Connor who had tried to make her intimate acquaintance at the All Saints' Ball takes her under his wing and trusts her with some of his patient medications. Unbeknownst to him, Linda is a pethidine addict who absconds with the patients' doses. Only when he catches her in the act does Connor realise the extent of her habit. Faced with the dilemma of dobbing on a colleague, Connor dallies despite Von's contrary advice. Only when confronted with the results of Linda's lies does he finally inform Terri. In the meantime, Brett Addison, a spinal accident victim is prepared for an op by Luke and anaesthetist Tom Snowden. The ward is amazed that the anaesthetist—an ex-pethidine addict who has now allegedly given up the habit and is undergoing counselling—is attending pre-op debriefings with patients. The consensus is Tom must have turned over a new leaf and be genuinely rehabilitated. Jared is the one who thinks otherwise; in his social circle it is well known Snowden is still out having a high time. Despite his feelings to the contrary, Luke tries to bury the hatchet and make a friendly approach to Tom only to receive a slap in the face. Tom blames Luke for all his ills and when Madsen refuses to work with Snowden, Snowden is convinced Luke has been saying things behind his back. Snowden facing a career halt and still in the throes of the major drug habit makes a desperate decision.
One of the illegal aliens who had sought Mitch's help recently comes back to him with her sick child. Mitch keeps the mother's secret intact by treating the boy without officially admitting him to the Ward. The boy is showing signs of pneumonia but things get more complicated—the eventual diagnosis is epilepsy.
Kylie and Mitch disagree on various options of treatment, the inference of parental abuse and on whether or not to admit and identify the child thereby bringing in the authorities. Mitch wins the day on all grounds much to Kylie's chagrin. She begins to have doubts about her competence, which Jared picks up on. His offer to discuss her situation leads to a night out together. Terri, meanwhile, admires Mitch's professional passion and his commitment to his patients; she senses somewhere along the way in the last few months she has lost her focus and surety in the same.

However, upon hearing noises from the bathroom they meet up with a relatively older and distraught woman. Eventually, the two ambulance officers are surprised to discover the prostitute is in fact the dead man and the older woman is the client. Admitted with swollen glands and fatigue, a woman's blood tests reveal she is not suffering from leukaemia as feared, but treatable toxoplasmosis. The down side is the comparative blood tests of her husband and young son reveal the little boy cannot possibly be her husband's child. When Mitch tactfully broaches the subject with the woman he is baffled by her insistence that her husband is the only man she has slept with since their wedding and he must be the father. The solution to the mystery is provided by the little boy's fond retelling of his own birth story and the revelation that he and his mum were separated for some time in his first few days of life while she was sick. The only conclusion that can be drawn is that two baby boys were somehow mistakenly swapped. Given a choice, Pam and Allan decide against legal action and to keep the little boy they have loved as their own but Mitch is uneasy: he knows one day the Millers will want to meet their real son.
Von's patience is tried by a rude and demanding blind man whose ex-girlfriend's preference for circumcised penises has persuaded him to have the chop himself. Twentieth Century Blues

Episode 108
Tuesday, July 11, 2000
Mitch's dedication to a patient, whose medical condition has left her cut off from the world, causes a rift in his relationship with Rose, threatening their marriage plans. At the same time, Terri is still on Retreat and meets a nun questioning her future within the Church.
When Ben and Bron answer a cry for help they find a woman, Lynette Newman, living in a sealed flat, under rigidly sterile conditions. A fall has given Lynette head injuries and she is transferred to All Saints and ultimately to Ward 17. She displays a paranoid fear of being there, and what appears to be a obsessive/compulsive/ disorder. Connor, currently acting NUM, wants Lynette transferred to the Psych unit. Mitch suspects there is more to it and insists Lynette remain in Room 1.
He sets out to solve the mystery of Lynette, made all the difficult by the fact she distrusts all doctors. She gets Connor and the rest of the staff offside with demands for special sterile conditions for anyone and anything in contact with her. Mitch overcomes her distrust and Lynette confesses she has chronic allergic reactions to a wide range of substances. Other doctors through it was a psychological, rather than a clinical problem, and Lynette gave up on the medical profession, sealing herself away from all the things which could harm her. Mitch sets out to define her condition. He is shocked when he realises Lynette has Twentieth Century Syndrome—that her capacity for allergic reaction is virtually unlimited, leaving her immune system in constant overload. It is a condition, which cannot be treated. But it can be managed and Lynette can be helped.
Rose and Mitch's wedding is approaching and Rose has pre-wedding jitters. However, these are only symptomatic of deeper concerns that Rose has about married life with Mitch. When she is confronted with Mitch's passionate commitment to his patients, her concerns reach crisis point. Von becomes her unwilling confidant, as Rose spells out her fears Mitch's professional dedication will always leave her in second place. Rose can't handle that and calls off the wedding. Mitch, who needs to be needed as much as Rose is needy, calls her bluff, offering to give up his medical career if that is what she wants. Rose gives in. She would never ask him to do that. But his gesture reconciles them and the wedding is back on.
Connor is determined to do a good job as acting NUM but things go from bad to worse. He is inundated with the bureaucratic aspects of the job—he is at odds with Mitch over Lynette, and Von and Jared seem to be giving him no respect whatsoever. On top of all that, he is sorely tempted by Amanda, an agency nurse filling in for the day. This is complicated by the fact Luke seeks to have a vendetta against her. By day's end, Connor has done a good job, has the respect of his staff (with a little help from ward clerk Tony) and has resolved the Luke/Amanda dispute.
On Retreat, Terri is joined by, Maria, a nun with her own problems. A dedicated social worker, Maria is at odds with the Church over the issue of safe injecting rooms. Maria is feisty, honest and direct and Terri finds herself swapping confidences with her new friend. In doing so, Terri is forced to evaluate her own past as a chronic runaway from unpleasant situations.

While Bron struggles to find a way to help Sister Frances, an Aboriginal patient arrives from Emergency. An arrogant new Medical Resident, Dr. Wilkes, believes eighteen-year-old Ajay is suffering from the effects of sniffing the propellant in aerosol paint cans. Bron becomes concerned Ajay's heartbeat is irregular. She wants Dr. Wilkes to examine his patient again but Dr. Wilkes refuses. He believes all Ajay needs is to sleep it off. Bron becomes convinced her patient is not a solvent abuser, but a diabetic. When Ajay's condition worsens, Bron takes her patient to the Emergency Ward to insist Dr. Wilkes examines him. This brings her into conflict with Emergency staff and Brenda Blair, the night ADON. Bron's instincts are proved right when Ajay goes into a diabetic coma.
Bron's night is further complicated when Ben turns up on the Ward, drunk. She hides him in the tearoom while she attends to Sister Frances. When Bron has to replace the old woman's catheter, Sister Frances tells her she believes this is a punishment from God. Bron seeks advice from Von and learns Sister Frances was one of the women in the Order who regretted the decision in the late 60s to adopt a more modern form of dress. Bron hears the old woman say she fears she can't go to God dressed as she is now, Bron enlists Von's help to make Sister Frances a makeshift wimple. Sister Frances at last manages to sleep.
Meanwhile, Mitch is enjoying his buck's night. When his friend Norman makes a speech about Mitch and Rose, Luke can only think of Steph. Luke is very drunk and he urges Mitch not to marry Rose. While Mitch is struggling to help his patient and make it to the Church on time, Terri is saying her farewells to the women at the Order's community house. She makes yet another difficult decision and goes to the Church to see Mitch and Rose.
Von's attitude to her seemingly vain patient, in for a cosmetic procedure, does little to diminish Luke's enthusiasm for sitting in on the liposuction procedure. Luke, believing cosmetic surgery is a huge money spinner, and Von, believing the bed could be better used for someone in "real" need, will both have cause to re-examine their attitudes when the woman suffers post-operative complications and we learn the true reason for her wanting the operation.
Kylie's diagnostic skills, as well as her patience, are tested when the infamous psychiatrist Dr. Jerry Stafford is admitted with symptoms mirroring the condition Bell's Palsy. But Kylie is convinced there is more this than meets the eye. Determined to find the cause of the symptoms without Mitch's help, Kylie enlists Jared to unravel the mystery. Jerry is not the most co-operative patient in the world but they persist.

The Cost Of Living

Episode 113
Tuesday, August 08, 2000
Bron is worried about Ben. He has slumped into a depression since Steph's death and she is concerned he is not taking adequate care of himself. So concerned, in fact she has temporarily moved into his flat to keep an eye on him. Which is where Ben drops his bombshell; he has decided to transfer from active paramedic duties to a desk job at HQ. Bron is aghast. She knows this is an ill-considered decision borne of his depression, but Ben won't hear reason. He is quitting just as soon as he finishes the paperwork.
When Ben and Bron attend a woman injured in a jet ski accident, Ben is on autopilot. He fulfils all the medical requirements to splint Jody's broken arm but he remains emotionally distant from Jody and her yuppie husband Phil. Nothing Bron says or does can shake Ben from his rut. It is not until Jody's condition deteriorates and Ben discovers her injuries are life threatening, that he gets the spark back in his eyes. It takes all of Ben's knowledge, experience and empathy to get Jody to safety and reassure her by-now hysterical husband. In doing so, Ben rekindles his passion for ambulance work, and comes to a deeper understanding of his grief for Stephanie. He rips up the transfer papers. After weeks of self-destructive grief, it looks like Ben is turning the corner.
On the ward, Jared is in a bad mood. Connor assumes it is because he has been staying at his mother's house recently. Tony is not so sure… could it be because Jared has been partnered with obnoxious student nurse Brittany yet again? Jared's mood deteriorates when he nurses a greedy amateur investor, Michael, who is more concerned with making money via on-line share trading than following doctor's orders. While leafing through a patient's newspaper, Tony uncovers what is really bugging Jared—his business executive father has absconded after being caught extorting millions of dollars from his clients. Jared and his family are now bankrupt. To rub salt in the wound, Michael returns from surgery, for a life-threatening aneurism, to discover his shares have skyrocketed in his absence. This foolhardy speculator has made a fortune, while conservative Jared is now broke.
It is Mitch's first day back from his honeymoon and Terri is tying herself up in knows over one simple task: to tell him she has left the Order. To make things more difficult, she and Mitch are working together today. Their patient Tanya has severe septicaemia, the cause of which leaves even Mitch gaping in horror.
Terri is pre-occupied with the Mitch issue all day. Even the problems with the new NurseCare computer system seem insignificant alongside the crippling indecision. Matters come to a head when Mitch notices her "wedding" ring is missing. Terri is trapped—she must reveal her decision. It only takes a moment, and Mitch greets the news with polite equanimity. But if it is all so straightforward, why does Terri feel such mixed emotions?

One For The Road

Episode 114
Tuesday, August 15, 2000
Brittany, under Jared's wing, has a "coming of age" working experience when Ian, an alcoholic lecturer with liver damage, and Lee, a car accident victim with a drinking habit are brought together in Room Four. Brittany develops a crush on Lee and goes so far as to kiss him. Jared spies them both and educates her on the need to separate her work from play. Brittany takes no heed until Jared forces her to do her normal nursing duties and help Lee with his toiletry. The lesson is a sorry one for romance and earns Jared Brittany's resentment. As a result of her feelings for Lee, Brittany is talked into keeping silent about the fact Lee's mates have brought him in a six pack of beer to drink on the Ward. This has a snowball effect when she later finds Ian drinking from one of the cans. He talks her into maintaining her silence, reminding her everyone will be in trouble if this is discovered. However, the beer causes Ian to suffer a hypoglycaemic attack. Knowing she has played a part in making Ian sicker, Brittany is guilt-stricken and starts to doubt her career choice. However, after a day of locking heads with Jared, he proves to be supportive, and his efforts to help to restore Brittany's faith in herself. Lee, meanwhile, gets a vivid picture of where irresponsible drinking ultimately leads.
A Greek woman who can't speak English, Mary Serdaris, is brought in with a bowel obstruction. Her young son Jimmy, in his efforts to protect his mother, gets in the way of Von, Terri and Luke. Luke is frustrated by not having an interpreter—it makes treating Mary extremely difficult, as no-one can explain to her what needs to be done. As a result, Mary is terrified. A delay in getting an Operating Theatre increases Luke's frustration, and in order to hurry things along, he "enhances" the situation somewhat by telling Theatre Mary will die if she does not get in there immediately. Unbeknownst to the staff, Jimmy overhears and tells his mother she is going to die. So Mary, in an attempt to save her son witnessing the death of a second parent, escapes from her room. A search party eventually finds her and she is taken through Emergency for her operation, When brought back to Ward 17, asleep and under medication, Jimmy still believes she is dead. It is only when Luke physically demonstrates to him that his mother is fine that Jimmy finally gets some good news.
Ben and Bron have an interesting day out. An emergency call for a dying baby proves to be for a cat named "Baby"—it has a furball lodged in its throat. All goes well until Bron reverses out of the driveway and straight over the just revived Baby. The elderly owner, upon seeing her Baby wrapped in a blanket and presuming the worst, is shaken badly. Ben and Bron deliver them individually to a vet's clinic and a hospital—both survive unharmed.
Terri, after criticism from Claudia, decides to give her Nursecare program a thorough test before making any final decisions.
We discover Luke has had a personal liaison with Claudia. It leads him to make a decision about his relationship with Bron.
With: Yanna Black as Mary Sendaris, Jake Blundell as Tony Hurst, Max Gillies as Ian Benson, Rachel Gordon as Claudia McKenzie, Marcia Neal as Lorna Mullins, Teague Rook as Lee Walton, Chris Sadrinna as David
Another Place, Another Time

Episode 115
Tuesday, August 22, 2000
Von's past is highlighted when a patient, Will Harrington, she nursed in a London pediatric unit is admitted to Ward 17. His memories of Von result in a lot of stirring from the rest of the staff and consequently a furious Von confronts Will, telling him she is not the person he thinks she is. Will comes to realise she may be right - he doesn't recognise this new Von at all. Besides, he does not need handholding any more - he is an adult. But, on learning he has cancer, all Will's childhood fears re-surface and Von is forced to re-enact the magic that got him through his childhood illness to help get him through this one.
Meanwhile, Bron discovers Connor's new job is not all it is cracked up to be. When she and Ben attend an accident, they discover the male involved has just been discharged from Connor's new ward at All Saints. When the victim insists on being taken back to it the same hospital, Bron drops in on Connor to tell him. There, she witnesses the rebellion of staff against Connor and while he is strong in his combating of the situation it is obvious he is not really happy in his new position. The trouble is, he does not have a clue how to get himself out of the situation without sacrificing what little dignity he has left. Ultimately, Connor bites the bullet and asks Terri to get him back onto Ward 17.
Luke, having completed knee surgery on Heather O'Neill, is all set to discharge her when Rose points out she has a hearing deficit and peripheral vision problems. Luke is happy to refer the patient on to Mitch who soon realises something is seriously amiss here. Heather is diagnosed with a meningioma, which should have been picked up a decade ago and now runs the risk of paralysing and even killing her. Luke takes the opportunity to get back in Madsen's good books by effectively taking credit for the diagnosis as he schedules emergency surgery.
Terri, still struggling to run an understaffed ward, still run off her feet picking up the staffing shortfall and still struggling to give the Nursecare system a fair go, finds herself on the wrong side of Rose. An innocent comment, reminder Rose of her obligation as a physio to Heather and her family, is completely misread by Rose, who believes Terri did it deliberately to stay in favour with Mitch. Rose pulls no punches when she warns Terri never to undermine her in front of her husband Mitch, again. The unspoken "or else" is heard loud and clear by Terri.
Luke is unimpressed to discover Bron is still gambling and has been throughout their now defunct relationship. He realises his loans to her were in fact payrolling her addiction and he demands she repay him every cent.
With: Jake Blundell as Tony Hurst, Tanya Bulmer as Heather O'Neill, Peter Carmody as Douglas Warren, Kathryn Hartman as Kristina Warren, Jai Koutrae as Jack, Simon Lyndon as Will Harrington, Pia Miranda as Brittany Finlay, Joy Smithers as Rose Stevens, Ling Hsueh Tang as Dr. Kylie Preece, Nicole Winkler as Claire Hamilton
Bosom of the Family

Episode 116
Tuesday, August 29, 2000
Terri settles a dazed Robyn Michalandos on Ward 17 but is immediately suspicious. Robyn insists her head injuries are from a fall down the stairs at home but all the signs point towards domestic violence. When her husband, Steve, arrives and immediately threatens his teenage stepson, the fears of the staff are seemingly confirmed. The stage is set for a tense day on the Ward.
Connor, back from his unhappy stint as NUM on Ward 8, finds himself welcomed back into an understaffed and badly stretched team. He is feeling insecure but quickly forgets his troubles as he nurses Val Hale. She is back in hospital suffering from another asthma attack caused by her allergy to her husband's sperm. Kylie and Connor stabilise Val and reassure her husband. Val settles down to recover from her fright.
Brittany is angry at the confidentiality rules, which stop the hospital reporting the domestic violence they all suspect. She takes an interest in Robyn's son Declan, who is sullen and anxious for his mother. Declan is not interested in discussing his problems or his family. Brittany persists however and Declan becomes increasingly distressed and suddenly turns on her. He attacks her in the foyer and has to be subdued by his father and the staff.
Meanwhile, Luke, Ben and Bron form an unlikely triangle during a road accident emergency. Ben and Bron pull Ellie from a burning car wreck to save her life. But she will lose her badly burned leg unless Ben can take quick action with a scalpel. It is up to Luke to talk Bron and Ben through the fasciotomy procedure over the phone.
Back on the ward, the Michalandos family troubles unravel. Terri learns Declan is responsible for Robyn's injuries. She and her husband have not been able to control his increasingly erratic and violent behaviour, though they have been determined to keep the problem to themselves. Luke is able to intervene with some frightening news: Declan's problems are not due to unruly adolescent behaviour - he has a brain tumour. Robyn realises her inaction has actually been hurting her son's health. But now surgery offers some hope for the family.
Val Hale dies in her sleep, undetected between observations. Connor and Kylie are deeply affected by her death and Kylie must face an irate and unforgiving husband. Mitch rages against the administrative decisions, which left Val without the close attention she needed. And, in frustration, Terri junks the NurseCare computer system, which has blighted their lives. She is set on a collision course with the hospital powers.
With: Jake Blundell as Tony Hurst, Marcel Bracks as Stella, Chris Foy as Declan O'Brien, Kathy Gaffney as Robyn Michaelandos, Pia Miranda as Brittany Finlay, Joe Petruzzi as Steve Michaelandos, Ling Hsueh Tang as Dr. Kylie Preece

Terri and Mitch need to somehow work out a plan before Ellen's health further suffers. But they discover Ellen's bond with her husband is stronger than their advice.
Bron and Ben rescue Patti from a snap freezer. The woman had gone in to save her friend Jill, who appears to have wanted to commit suicide, and in so doing Patti ended up bound to her friend's hand. Unable to separate Patti from her dead friend, Ben and Bron have to wait until the shelf to which Jill is attached, is cut away. Then, Patti (still attached to the corpse) is able to be taken to All Saints. It is up to Luke, with Kylie now as his observer, has to separate the two women surgically. Tender Loving Care

Episode 118
Tuesday, September 12, 2000
Mitch discovers Rose has been keeping a huge secret from him. She suffers from Bipolar, a manic depressive condition. She has been managing the condition with a Lithium dosage. However since discovering her pregnancy, she has discontinued the medication, leaving herself vulnerable to manic mood swings. The fact Rose kept this from Mitch underlines her insecurity in the relationship. Even Mitch does not realise how much this insecurity is focussed on his friendship with Terri. Rose's condition is a blow to Mitch, but he rises to the challenge in sterling fashion, enlisting psychiatrists to provide help for Rose and an alternative therapy to the Lithium dosage. Ironically, Mitch thinks this is all bringing him and Rose closer together. But Mitch is not to know that Rose is starting to fixate on Terri as the enemy. Behind Mitch's back, Rose does her best to make trouble for Terri with Hospital Administrator Claudia McKenzie. Claudia is an old student chum of Rose's—something else Mitch does not know. By the end of the episode, not only is Rose turning her back on the therapy Mitch has so carefully arranged, we are beginning to wonder if Rose's malice towards Terri is not about to take an alarming turn for the worse.
Bucking the system, Mitch, with Terri's help, directly admits a patient from Emergency into Ward 17. The patient, Arthur Constantine, is loud-mouthed and obnoxious. Apparently, he is a drunk who is here because he passed out in a taxi. The complication is that he has his young son Theo with him. This has influenced Mitch, the father-to-be, in his desire to find what is wrong with Arthur. For the same reason, Jared, nursing Arthur, is alienated by the man's apparent irresponsibility towards his son.
Claudia discovers (via Rose) Mitch and Terri have bent the rules by admitting Arthur to the Ward and they are in trouble. The trouble escalates when they learn Arthur has been lying to them. He has effectively kidnapped his son from his ex-wife and is on the run. Arthur's explanation for his actions is that he knows he is dying and he wanted to spend his last days with his son.
Terri knows she should inform Arthur's ex-wife immediately but Mitch convinces her to delay a couple of hours until they can get to the bottom of Arthur's condition. With Jared's help, Mitch succeeds. Arthur is no drunk. He is suffering from Polycythemia, a blood disorder, which affects the liver and can be managed. Arthur is not going to die after all. However, an explanation of Arthur's condition carries no weight with his vengeful ex-wife. She takes Theo, with threats of charges to follow. Mitch, with half a mind on his own domestic problem, manages to convince Arthur that while there is life there is hope.
Ben is called to a nursing home, where an old lady has fallen out of bed. Ben is less than impressed by the apparent level of care at the home. The old lady is admitted to Ward 17, and disturbing things are discovered. The nursing home is mistreating its inmates and covering up its mistakes. Ben later appeals to a nurse working at the home to make a formal complaint about the conditions. But by this time the old lady has bequeathed a plague of scabies to Ward 17.
Bron is trying to deal with the hurt of splitting up with Luke. Since he dumped her, his behaviour has been unpleasant and he is pressuring her about the $10,000 she owes him. The pain and humiliation are doubled when Bron learns that even before he dumped her, Luke was (and is) having an affair with Claudia McKenzie.
When Bron befriends Patrick, a retarded patient in for an appendectomy, he gives her his two tickets to the Olympic opening ceremony. Bron sees a way out of debt—sell the tickets and pay off Luke. But in the end, she will decide to take Patrick to the Olympics instead. And she even manages a moment of sweet revenge on Luke and Claudia.
