Hi buddy

I hope this helps:

California heat kills 25,000 cattle: official

LOS ANGELES (AFP) - A heat wave baking California since mid July has killed 25,000 cattle and 700,000 fowl, prompting emergency measures and crippling the sector for months to come, analysts said.

Central California between Bakersfield and Redding is home to approximately 2.5 million cattle. Roughly 25,000 died because of the triple-digit temperatures since July 14, according to Andy Zylstra, president of the California Dairy Campaign.

"The timing is horrendous," he told AFP. "The price of milk is down 30 percent while feed, fuel, electricity prices are all up, and now we have these tremendous losses. It's just a kick in the head."

The losses amount to 1,500 to 2,500 dollars per head.

Milk production in central California is also down. Tulare-based Land O' Lakes Creamery normally produces 1.6 million gallons (6.0 million liters) of milk daily. The company has been reporting losses of 400,000 gallons (1.1 million liters) a day, according to Zylstra.

Disposal of the cattle creates another economic drain on strapped dairy farmers, and the sheer numbers of carcasses heading to the rendering plants has forced some counties to declare a state of emergency. Normally outlawed as a disposal method in California, many of the dead cattle are buried in landfills or composted on site.

"Composting is the best alternative method," said Zylstra. "Come six months, there's nothing left but the plastic ear tags -- not even any bones or teeth."

Disposal methods vary by county based on the water table, according to Zylstra.

Though not sustaining the losses of the dairy industry, poultry farmers are also disposing of millions of pounds of chickens and turkeys in landfills. Most central California poultry farms house their birds in ventilated, water-cooled barns that keep the temperature at 76 degrees F (24 degrees C), according to Bill Mattos, President of California Poultry Association.

"But when the temperatures reach over 100 degrees F (38 degrees C), it can be devastating to the smaller producer," Mattos told AFP. He estimates that 700,000 birds have been lost in the summer heat.

The heat also decreases the breeding success of the livestock. "Cows just don't get pregnant in the heat," said Zylstra. "Nine months down the road we'll be seeing the long-term effects. Just like people, cows just aren't as frisky in this kind of heat."

I love such kind of sentences :rolleye:

I spring in the spring with a spring in the spring

(the first spring means to jump- the second means stream, stream is a small river- the third is sth elastic that regains the original shape after being compressed - and the last spring is one of the seasons of the year) so here goes the meaning of your sentence:
I jump into the stream with a spring in the spring

As a guess work I could say the last CAN is something for opening a can but you know I checked the dictionary and there was no such a meaning for CAN
If the sentence was "Can you can a can in the can" then I could say the other meaning of can is prison or jail but "...with a can?" still I'm not sure

dear Alipacino can you tell me where could you find opener as the meaning of can?

Hi buddy

Sorry I didn't answer your questions on time as I was too much busy.

1. To practice your speaking, you can try different ways including Questioning-Answering, Repeating Sentences, Reading Texts Aloud, Murmuring, Descriptions, Sentence-Making, Substitutions, ...

Since I'm short of time, I can't elaborate these methods in detail, but God willing I will later.

2. No way! translating can just help you increase your vocabulary.that's all. Also it can help you get fluency in oral transaltion.

3. If you want to improve your reading skill, there are many sites on the internet which can offer you a lot of texts on different topics. You can easilly search and find them.

All the Best

Hi Reza

You know what they say: Practice what you preach. I think you'd better check your own grammar first before leaving a post as there are 2 grammatical and 1 spelling mistakes in your own post:

My please or I'm pleased? ;)

The word Please must either come at the begining or at the end of an imperative sentence like

please check your spelling ....

or

check your spelling ..... , please.

and finally

sentenceses or sentences? ;)

Everybody here is trying to practice their English and no one can claim to be perfect in English even me as the moderator of this forum.

No offense buddy!

Hi,

I haven't heard about 24-hours english schools in Tehran.

Why would you like to pay money to some institutes for doing sth that you can do it yourself?
For learnig english in the UK, you can apply to British universities directly. They have language courses and most of them have summer courses too which is intended for holiday makers in the UK and I think the duration is between 4 weeks and 3 months. you can chose between them.
One point that you should take into consideration is their tuition fee. It's very expensive to study in the UK even for a short period of time and the living costs are also so high.
But you have another chance too! you can apply to some british or international universities in other countries, some of them have much lower fees for their english courses.
If you can tolerate Indians, it can be one of your choises.

Good luck

Hi Masoud :)

I didn't get your point right. Could you elaborate your request? What exactly are you looking for? A book in advanced level on translation?

A book on the theory of translation or a practical book?

Yours

Reza

Hi

I want to send an email to my instructor and ask him a question but I don't know how to begin the letter.

The main problem is about greetings. What should I say??

Would you place some letter templates here?
I'm looking forward to hearing from you.
Best regards

Hi Amir

It all depends on his title. And also you didn't say if you have any problems with the other parts of your letter. Anyway, you can start your letter with the following expressions:

Dear Mr/Mrs./Ms ..... ,
or
Dear Dr. ...... ,
or
Dear Professor ......,

Dear Reza,
Hi,
Thank you for your response. But what should I write after "Dear Dr. ..."? This is my problem. For example, instead of "how are you" or ... what should I write in formal letters? (Not completely formal, with intimacy which exists between a student and an instructor).

Hi dear Amir,

It depends on what you are going to say in your letter. I mean is this letter just for greeting or are you going to say something special?
Normaly in formal letters - as you already know- we do not say "how are you" or such things, instead you go straight to the main part of your letter and the first sentence should briefly explain what is the purpose of your letter.
This is the usual frame of a formal letter, however, it can be changed as the writter wishes. It depends how close you are to the addressee.

I hope this helps.

Good luck

Hi,
Thank you for your worthwhile attention. As I said before, I want to write some kind of salutation and then ask my question.
I don't want to write a "Finglish(!)" letter and like other persian letters, I don't want to go straight to the main point.
One example is "hope you are doing well". What are other sentences like this?
Best Regards

love-to-learn
27-09-2006, 14:48
Good afternoon,

I do know you are not going to write a "Finglish" letter, otherwise you wouldn't have posted this new topic.

As I said, in Formal letters, they usually don't write grteetings, just a salutation like: Dear sir/madam, etc. will do. This is the standard for formal letters.
FYI (however I'm sure you well know) we write a formal letter to Managers, Headmasters or somebody who is so high in rank. You see.
As you have already noted, in Persian formal letters we don't say greetings either as this is the standard frame.

Now, if you feel this intimate to greet your addressee, then your letter would be more "neutral" than formal I can say.

Have a nice day

Resumes for the 50+ Job Hunter

Resumes for the 50+ Job Hunter (Vgm Professional Resumes)
by VGM Career Horizons
Publisher: VGM Career Books
Publication Date: 1995-04
Pages: 150
ISBN: 0844243892

This book presents a rather small and general guide and workbook for writing resumes, for people of ALL ages and ALL walks of life. There is no mention at all, NONE, in the text, of older job seekers and no specific information provided that could be considered pertinent to this topic. In fact, mention IS made of recent graduates! Nevertheless, most of the book consists of various sample resumes and sample cover letters. The only thing that remotely makes this topical is that many of the sample resumes show work histories dating back to the 1970s and even as far back as the 1950s. Typical is a current position that shows dates of "1973 to present", or similar or earlier time period, and the resumes appear to be samples of some rather old resumes, rather than samples of resumes of older people. Any money spent on this book is a waste, unless you are just looking for a general resume writing guide, and there are many such publications available that are not only far better than this, but which are accurately titled!

DIDO : Life For Rent
I know you think that I shouldn't still love you
Or tell you that
But if I didn't say it
Well, I'd still have felt it
Where's the sense in that?

I promise I'm not trying to make your life harder
Or return to where we were

Well I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be

I know I left too much mess
And destruction to come back again
And I caused nothing but trouble
I understand if you can't talk to me again
And if you live by the rules of "It's over"
Then I'm sure that that makes sense

Well I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be

And when we meet
As I'm sure we will
Oh what was there
Will be there still
I'll let it pass
And hold my tongue
And you will think
That I've moved on

Well I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be

Well I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be

I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door

Happy New Year dear payanm
if u really wanna learn English in just 6 month u should try hard and I think dear silentcloud’s ways were good & R very helpful for u but I think it’s not enough I’m going to add some more ways that my best teachers told me and I do them till now :
listen if u wanna learn English completely u should work hard on ur English,I mean u should try different ways…now I’m going to tell u:1-listening to the news and write it down it helps u to improve ur listening and help u learn many vocabulary…I suggest u to listen to the voa or bbc if u wanna listen to voa news u can start from voa special English (it’s a bit easier).2-speaking English (try to speak English ,about everything that u wanna say in Persian according to one of my teachers try to forget Persian .u know I think u should have someone to correct ur mistake and if u don’t have u can ask ur question from us (here in this forum).3-using grammar in use and vocabulary in use for ur grammar and vocabulary in my opinion watching movie is a very good way to learn up to date expression not anything else…so u need to know grammar and a lot of words for solving this problem I suggest u these books :grammar in use & vocabulary in use.
And accept my apologize because I’ve forgotten a way for memorizing vocabulary but I’ll tell u if u had the same problem as me and what should to do with big problem???...
Dear friend try hard and ask ur question from us
And one more thing why did u asked can I learn English in 6 month???ur answer is quite clear and that depend on u if u ‘ve learn sth and wanna continue I think u can but u should do everything for ur learning .
And don’t forget that when there is a will there is a way…l
Good luck and have a good year…

Hi :)........... A poems for ur teacher:l

Teachers teach what they will never know,
However thoroughly they may prepare.
After all the books and lesson plans,
No test can touch the things that make us care.
Knowledge is not the choicest seed they sow.

Your devotion is a pair of hands
Offering a sculpture fierce and rare,
Unveiling a place where I must go

Some impressive sentences:l

* You are the bestest Teacher in this world. Wherever I may go in my life, I will always remember that I had an excellent guide in the form of a teacher, You.

* I found guidance, friendship, discipline and love, everything, in one person. And that person is you (name of your teacher)

* Without you, we would have been lost. Thank you teacher for guiding us, inspiring us and making us what we are today.

* We will always be thankful to you for all the hard work and efforts you have put in, for educating us.

* You are not only our teacher. Rather, you are friend, philosopher and guide, all molded into one person.
We will always be grateful to you for your support

* I may not say it always. But, I mean it whenever I say it. Thank You Teacher for all the things you have done for us.

Thank you for being such wonderful teachers, exemplary role models, and caring people.
Thank you for knowing your subjects and sharing your knowledge. Thank you for not being
afraid to treat students like real people. Thank you for showing acceptance, approval,
and appreciation. These are all gifts that your students will always remember,
just as they will also remember you.

Words of encouragement a little respect, and simple gestures of kindness from a
teacher promote the perfect climate for students to study, learn, and grow. Your
attitude translates into a spirit of friendliness and good will toward others in a sometimes unfriendly world.
Progress is easier in an atmosphere of creative freedom, joy,
and ease, and you foster this feeling in your classroom.

I salute the good work you've done. I appreciate the people you are, and I thank you
for your positive influence. You have passed on invaluable instruction and wisdom and
created pleasurable moments associated with learning that will always be sweet memories.

Thank you for answering the call to be teachers. Thank you for the enduring impression
you've made in the lives you have touched. Every community needs people like you.
Your contributions are immeasurable. Your lessons are permanent. You improve our world.
You are so important.

Just try to search the phrase "Thank you Messages for Teachers"........ Then U'll have so many sentences listed right in front of u :happy:l

Good Luck :happy:l

Dear Friend

Very informal, sometimes offensive, language that is used especially by people who belong to a particular group, such as young people or criminals is called slang.

On the other hand, a group of words that has a special meaning that is different from the ordinary meaning of each separate word is called idiom. For example, 'under the weather' is an idiom meaning 'ill'.

Hope you find this info useful.

Dear Hezaro Yekshab
Curved handwriting is nowadays no more used by educated people. You’d better devote your time to improving your other learning skills like listening or speaking.

Hi

Would you first let us know what subject you are interested in? and in which level you would like it to be?l

There are hundreds of english magazines. Here are just a few suggestions:

If you want it for elementry to intermediate levels VIVA magazine is not bad and also TEENAGER.
If you want something more advanced READERS DIGEST could be a good choice.

Good luck:11:l

Institution: location -- Trinity College: Hartford, CT
Degree, Major (and concentration if appropriate), date -- Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, Expected May 2003
Cumulative GPA/GPA in major (optional) - list if 3.0 or higher with academic honors and awards
Optional: relevant coursework, foreign study programs.

CAREER OBJECTIVE:If you have a cover letter, you generally do not need an objective. If you decide you want one anyway, it should be a concise and meaningful statement describing your career goals. Be as specific as possible without being too restrictive.

EXPERIENCE:List experiences as follows: Job title, employer, location (city, state) and the dates. The order of the job title and the employer depends on how you want to present yourself. De-emphasize dates, months may or may not be relevant.
Tailor this section for the type of position you are applying - Teaching Experience, Research Experience, Financial Experience, etc.
You may choose to put either the job title or employer name first. You should decide which is more important - where you worked or what you did.May include full-time, part-time, related volunteer work or relevant campus activities, and internships. Remember, not all paid positions reflect your skills.

Appropriate divisions for this category may include research experience, teaching experience, technical experience, etc.

HONORS & AWARDS:List academic, leadership and athletic honors. If you only have academic awards you can list them under your GPA in the Education section.

ACTIVITIES/SPECIAL INTERESTS:Include leadership positions, such as offices held and responsibilities. You do not need to include everything you have done, be selective in your listing.

REFERENCES AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST:You should only use this if you need to fill space. Refer to the Letters of Recommendation CSO guide.
RESUME WRITING TIPS
1. Limit to one page. You do not have to state everything you have done on a resume, but everything you state must be true. 2. Determine the type of layout that works best for your experience. You may use bolding to emphasize key skills and accomplishments. 3. Tailor your resume to the type of position to which you are applying. Decide what you want your resume to convey about your abilities. 4. Maintain a consistent writing style. a. Do Not use "I" or "my." b. You may use complete or fragmented sentences as long as the meaning is clear and style is consistent. c. Start each description with an action word. Use present tense verbs when referring to current activities. Use past tense verbs when referring to past activities. d. Especially if you are interested in the financial industry use numbers, where appropriate, to quantify the scope of involvement. e. Include a brief explanation of an organization in your description if its name is obscure. Remember, the reader is not necessarily familiar with Trinity. 5. Emphasize outcome, accomplishments and breadth of responsibility. Examples: Streamlined invoice procedures reducing staff processing time. Organized publicity campaign leading to 25% increase in volunteers. 6. Be concise and clear in your descriptions. Do not try to impress employers with the use of complicated or confusing words.
7. Make sure there are no typing, spelling or grammar errors.
8. Do not use contractions and make sure you define abbreviations or acronyms.
9. Be consistent. For example, if your headings are in bold type, all headings should be in bold. Each entry should follow a uniform format.
10. Spell check, but remember that spell check does not catch everything. Have someone proofread your resume.
11. Choose a font that is easy to read: Palatino or Times, no larger than 14 point and no smaller than 10 point.
12. In most cases a cover letter should be attached to your resume. Refer tothe How to Write a Cover Letter CSO Guide.
13. Print final copies of your resume on quality paper. Use the same color and type of paper for resume, cover letter and envelope. Make sure the paper photocopies well.
14. Seek advice from the Career Services Office for suggested improvements in wording, layout and style.

There are no rules or grammatical points because there are some fields that you should fill out with info.
for example:
expriences :
ex:from 1997 till present - X(name of company) Company as a X(job title)
or Skills,
Copmputer (Microsoft Office [ excellent] , Auto Cad [good] ,..... )

Languages : English (Excellent), French (Good ) ,...

there are some pre-prepared CVs written in word or excel. you can search for them in internet or I can send u if u want

Hi,
I suggest that you listen to VOA Special English which is provided by VOA for English learners. You can download MP3 files from the address below with the related text, then you can listen to it and take a look at the text simultaneously. Notice that VOA Special English is for intermediate English learners. After a while, if you feel that Special English is not enough for you, you can listen to BBC or CNN.
Good luck buddy!

Lexical Terms

آشنایی با معنی کلمات

آشنایی با معنی اصطلاحات و Idioms

گروه دوم:

Fluency Terms

آشنایی با تلفظ درست کلمات

آشنایی با لحن ها

آشنایی با Intonation ( موسیقی و ریتم کلام)

گروه سوم

Accuracy Terms

Hi
I confirm p3yman's way, but you can try to write your recorded news on the piece of a paper for further help. I've tried it myself and it really works, believe me. even one sentence that you right will help you to understand the news. and try to complete your passage gradually. after finishing it you'll understand how easy was the news! listening to VOA Special English is useful also
